AGM Report

Our AGM on Tuesday last brought a successful year to a close. Both the Report of the Rúnaí and the address of the Cathaoirleach applauded the work of players, officials and club members. The success of the senior team in winning the Division 2 League, the winning of the Minor Championship and the winning of the under 16 League were the football highlights. However, the overall level activity, in and around the Park throughout the year is a delight to behold. The club fields 15 teams between men’s, ladies and boys in football and hurling. Then there is the cultural side of the club with Scór and Scór na nÓg. Yes, participation in the games and pastimes of Ireland is alive and well. Gura fada buan é i gCeann na Bó. There was good news too on the financial front with progress being made on reducing the debt. Massive efforts have been made and will continue to be needed over the next few years to eliminate the debt. However, the excellent facilities we have justify the effort and they would never be there if we waited to collect the money first.

The attendance was the lowest since 2007, with just 45 in attendance. However, the beauty of having our website is that you can look back on the years since it started and the attendance varies greatly from year to year. However, a smaller attendance is disappointing when it happens, but you never know why.

Report of an Rúnaí

If you were not at the AGM, it would be worth your while getting a copy of the Annual Report. It highlights the importance of the GAA in the community and the place of the club in dealing with the trials of the modern era. It is excellently put together and shows the range of club activity during the year. It would be a pity if only the 45 who came to the meeting bother to read it. Text Patsy Connaughton at 087 6846578 or e-mail at secretary.ballinamoreseanoheslins.leitrim@gaa.ie for a copy.

Cycle to Castlebar? Cad a cheapann tú?

For the last two years our sponsored Cycle has been to the Connacht Championship games in Roscommon and Sligo. Both years the event has been a great financial and social success. Next year Leitrim’s first game in Ireland will be against Mayo in Castlebar about the last weekend of June, that is if Leitrim beat London. The distance from Ballinamore to Castlebar is 115km (72m). It would be a great new challenge. We would like to know at this stage if all or most of last year’s cyclists would be in favour of planning to cycle to Castlebar. The target again would be for each cyclist to raise €200. Please e-mail your comments to seanoheslinsgaa@eircom.net

Juniors beat Kiltubrid in Division 5

Our Junior B team added a couple of more points to their tally in Division 5 with a win over Kiltubrid on Saturday. The hero of the first half was Daryl McFarland who scored two goals when were struggling and this kept us ahead by 2-1 to 0-6 at half-time. In the second half Adrian Murphy got a point and Stephen McTague got three from frees and we won by 2-5 to 0-8. Good to see Conor McTague coming back from injury and coming on in the second half.

Foireann: Cormac Ó Súilleabháin, David Earley, Freddie Walsh, John Fanning, Jack Cullen, Kevin Prior, Kevin Banks, Jason Kellett, Joe Murphy, Michael Costello, Adrian Murphy (0-1), Alan Prior, Daryl McFarland (2-0), Stephen McTague (0-4), Seán McCartin. Sub; Conor McTague for S McCartin, S McCartin for D McFarland.

Under 16s out of  Football Championship

Our Under 16s championship run ended on Friday when they lost to Carrigallen by 4-12 to 3-13. This was a big disappointment as the same team had won the Under 16 fifteen-a-side league earlier this year. In the championship they have played four games to date but lost three of them, to Mohill, Saint Francis and Carrigallen. The defeats to the latter two were surprising. In the league they beat Carrigallen by eight points but lost by two on Friday. They play Dromahair in Dromahair on this Friday at 5.30.

Under 12 games

There are a series of under 12 finals in the Park on Saturday at 11.00, which include Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins.

Wicklow Ladies – Ballinamore connection

Wicklow ladies won the Junior All Ireland last Sunday week and their captain was Caitríona McKeon who played at centre half back. Caitríona is a niece of Seán McKeon of High St, Ballinamore. Caitríona had previously played with London in an All Ireland Ladies final and lost, so her success was all the more deserved.

Football in Los Angeles – Wild Geese

Karl Sharpley was home on holidays last week and he tells us that he plays football with a club called the Wild Geese in Los Angeles. Karl played football and hurling with Seán O’Heslins and won many underage titles.

Under 16 Hurlers unlucky in Final

Our under 16 hurlers were terribly unlucky to lose by a point to Cluainín in the under 16 final. A goal from a penalty in the later stages, plus a 65 that came with time up were the deciding factors. Report next week.

Under 16 Football Championship

Under 16 were beaten by St Francis 4-6 to 1-11 last Friday. They play Carrigallen on this Friday at 5.45 in Carrigallen, a game they must win to remain in the Championship.  They were unlucky last week to concede four goals and, like our Minors, they are preparing to do it all the hard way, something they are very capable of.

Camogie

Anyone for Camogie? A number of years ago we had a schools Camogie team in Ballinamore. The good news is that there is a Camogie Development Officer for Connacht who is available to develop Camogie in Leitrim. Initially it is hoped to have indoor camogie and the Coach will be available to get it started. Many of our ladies team would most likely be interested in trying it out. Give Paddy O’Connor a ring and he will give you details.

Good Wishes

A speedy recovery to Eilish O’Dowd who was in hospital recently. Fortunately she had already helped the under 16s to win the Championship.

Kildare Senior Championship Connection

Last Sunday Athy won the Kildare Senior Football Championship for the first time in 24 years. Cian Reynolds scored six of their points and two crucial ones hear the finish. Cian os son of Colm Reynolds of Edentenny. Maith thú, Cian

Senior Hurlers Lose Semi final narrowly

For the second year in a row our senior hurlers have lost by the narrowest of margins to Gortletteragh in the Senior Hurling Championship semi-final. A year ago the sides were level at the finish and we lost in extra time. On Saturday last Gortletteragh got the winning point with just a couple of minutes to go. Overall we had many chances to win it. In the first half, there were several times the sliothar went inches wide. In a low scoring first half it ended 0-3 to 0-2 for Gortletteragh with Morgan Quinn scoring our two points. The game was level on no fewer than three occasions in the second half with our scores coming from Kevin O’Connor (three) and one each from Shane Moran and Vincent Mulvey. Overall it was a close call but our hurling is over for another year. There was drama in the first game as Cluainín ended St Mary’s dreams of a thirteen-in-a-row. This year will see a County Senior final without St Mary’s for the first time since 1987, all of 24 years ago. Ironically that was the year the title came to Ballinamore when we beat St Mary’s in the semi-final and Gortletteragh in the final.

Foireann: Ruairí Sullivan, Paul Earley, Paddy McManus, Joe Earley, Liam Ferguson, Seán McWeeney, Kevin O’Connor (0-3), Shane Moran (0-1), Morgan Quinn (0-2), Keith Boyle, Brendan Mulvey (0-1), Shane Murphy, Shane Creamer, Adrian Smith, Éamon Walsh. Subs: Tommy McCormack for Shane Creamer, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin for T McCormack, Dan O’Brien for Éamon Walsh.

Great victory for Girls Under 16s in Championship Final

Another trophy came to the town on Sunday when the under 16 Girls won the 11 a side Championship Final beating Drumkeerin by 4-8 to 2.10. This was a great effort from the girls who struggled in the first half and were behind by two points at half time. A goal before half time from Eilish O’Dowd helped matters and brought us back into the game. Shortly after half time a goal from Leighanne Flynn set us on the high road but the result was in doubt until the very end. There were great celebrations as the Captain, Aoibhean Flynn, received the cup and, for the second week in a row, the bonfires blazed at Edentenny. Congratulation to the entire team and to their mentors: Séamus Flynn and Carol Wrynn.

Foireann: Laura Creaven, Bláithín Sharpley, Niamh Flynn (0-1), Lisa Maguire, Ellen Wrynn, Aoibheann Flynn (Capt), Laura O’Dowd (0-5), Maebh Gleeson (1-0), Leighanne Flynn (2-1), Róisín McHugh (0-1), Eilish O’Dowd (1-0). Subs: Cáit Connaughton, Rachel Creamer, Sara Beth Reilly, Niamh Toolan, Leah Mullaney, Kate Reynolds, Katie Cullen, Frances Farry, Aoife Murphy.

Under 16 Hurlers in Final Tonight

Our under 16 hurlers beat Gortletteragh last week and they play the final against Cluainín tonight in Páirc Mhuire at 5.45

Under 12 Football

We played our 4th and 5th rounds in the league winning both games by narrow margins. On last Monday evening 26th September we beat Annaduff by a single point in the Park on a scoreline of 1-13 to 4-3. On the following Thursday we travelled to the Bee Park in Manorhamilton to take on the home team and won 5-7 to 2-11. We also got the points from our final game so we ended the league on top with 12 points from 6 games and have qualified for the final. Our opponents and the venue for the final have not been decided yet.

Under 16 Championship

Scéalta na Seachtaine- 26 Mean Fomhair 2011

Minor Champions for first time since 1985

On Sunday last our Minor Footballers achieved one of the most significant successes that have come our way in recent years. Minor football champions – on our own – for the first time since 1985. What makes this success so welcome and unexpected is that two years ago, as under 16s, this team was playing in what was effectively the B division, the 13 a side championship. They did reach the final but were devoured by Allen Gaels, on a most forgettable day in Aughnasheelin by 13 points. (One of our best players then was Abdul Ahmed). On Sunday last they were worthy winners and put in an outstanding performance.

They played great for the first twenty minutes of the first half against the wind and with three points from Luke Murphy, one free and two from play a free from Mark McGrory and one from play by Jack Cullen, they were 0-5 to 0-4 up, and really should have been more ahead. Then Glencar/Manorhamilton got going and by half time there was room for worry as Manor got five points in a row and only for a great save from Cian McCaffrey and indeed had the crossbar been six inches higher two balls would have gone under it. At half time it was 0-9 to 0-5 for Glencar/Manor. The second half was a revelation; The North Leitrim lads got just one point in the whole half. Mark McGrory finished a half chance for a goal. Dean McGovern got a point and then Luke Murphy finished Manorhamilton’s chances with a great goal and then a point.

Every one of the seventeen who played gave it everything but the contribution of Luke Murphy was a major factor in the destination of this Championship. Is not often that a 15 year old has such a bearing on the result of a minor match and, not surprisingly, he got the Man-of-the-Match award at the end of the game. Yes it was a memorable day as the 19th title came to Seán O’Heslins plus three more to Oughteragh Gaels. The trophy was presented amid great excitement to Captaen, Stiofán Mac Taidhg. Particular credit must go to bainisteoirí: Patrick “Beezer” McKiernan, and Tom Burns and assistants: Patsy Connaughton, Joe Feely and Ollie Honeyman. Lá iontach do chlub Sheáin Uí Eislin.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Kevin Banks, Eoin McHugh, Cyril Smith, Keelan McHugh, Jack Cullen (0-1), David McLoughlin, Brian Beirne, Stephen McTague, Dean McGovern (0-1), John Fanning, Conor Moran, Mark McGrory (1-1), Andrew Burns, Luke Murphy (1-4). Anthony Maguire for Eoin McHugh, Brian Leyden for Conor Moran: Other subs: Patrick Connaughton, Cian Reynolds, Conor Maxwell, Brian Banks, Fergal Curran.

Yellow River Gaels Success

Gaeil an Abhann Buí is certainly a new concept that many will not be familiar with. At any rate the final of this new under 13 regional competition was played on Saturday last in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin. Five clubs make up the Yellow River Gaels: Sean O’Heslins, Carrigallen, Aughavas, Aughnasheelin, and Aughawillan. O’Heslins were represented by Darren Maxwell, Damien Creaven, Adam Goldrick, Niall McGovern, Kevin Mullen, Dara Murphy, James Hamill, Daragh Reynolds and Jamie Sweeney. They had an easy victory over Sheemore Gaels.

Seniors are Division 2 Champions

Our seniors rounded off the year with a very welcome victory over Kiltubrid in the final of the Gallogly Catering All County League Division 2 on Saturday. This was the first senior silverware to come to the club since winning what was then the Senior B Championship in 2003. That same year we won the Division 2 League but at that time there were 20 teams in the Division 1 League and our second team won the Division 2 League. There was great relief on Saturday as promotion to Division 1 without winning the league would have been a damp squib.  This was a hard won game and at half time the teams were level at 1-4 to 0-7. We had got the tonic of a great goal from Wayne McKeon early in the game and a great point from Shane McWeeney near half time. Early in the second half Shane Moran picked up a fortunate loose ball and banged it into the net and that really set us into a lead we never lost. It ended 2-9 to 0-10. Our Captain, David Duignan was presented with the Cup by Cathaoirleach Seosamh O Floinn.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Mathew Murphy, David Duignan, Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Wayne McKeon (1-1), Shane Moran (1-1), Shane Murphy (0-1), Johnny McWeeney, Sean Murray, Shane McWeeney  (0-2,1f), Adrian Smith, James McWeeney (0-2, 1f). Subs used: Brian Cafferty for John McWeeney, Paul Prior (0-1) for S Murray, Kevin O’Connor for Shane McWeeney.

Joey Honeyman – Manager and player

It was a fairly unique event on Saturday in Cloone to see Joe Honeyman as manager of Kiltubrid in the Senior final against his old club Seán O’Heslins but in the very next game Joey was lining out at full-back for O’Heslin’s in the Junior B Championship quarter final. A great indication of Joey’s commitment to O’Heslins to see him lining out for the Juniors despite losing the Senior game.

Juniors Lose in Quarter Final

Like Dublin in the All Ireland Final, our second junior team look dead and buried in the second half of their quarter final against Aughavas when they were nine points down with ten minutes to go but a dramatic recovery brought them within a point of Aughavas in the end. At half time it was 0-7 to 0-4 for Aughavas with three of our points coming from Anton Arandelovic who had a great game at centre field plus one from Daryl McFarland. Shortly after half time Aughavas got a goal and a point, Anton got us another point and then three points from Aughavas left it 1-11 to 0-5 with ten minutes remaining. Then the resurrection started. Anton got another point, Adrian Murphy pointed and then Cormac Ó Suilleabháin got a goal to reduce it to five points difference. Darren McGrory, who had come in as a substitute, got a point and then a goal and all of a sudden there was only one in it. Aughavas got one back but Anton Arandelovic pointed a free and it was back to one but time ran out and it ended 1-13 to 2-9 for Aughavas.  Overall it was a good performance to get so close when all seemed lost and it must be remembered this team were playing in a higher division than last year.  And so our last team in the 2011 adult championship made their exit.

Foireann:  Ruairí Sullivan, David Earley, Joe Honeyman, Gavin Brennan, Naoise Hayden, Kevin Prior, Shane Creamer, Anton Arandelovic (0-6, 3f), Jason Kellett, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (1-0), Adrian Murphy (0-1), Michael Costello, Daryl McFarland (Capt) (0-1), Adrian Gallogly, Seán McCartin. Subs: Séamus Donnelly for G Brennan, Alan Prior for M Costello, Daren McGrory (1-1) for S McCartin.

Great Win for Minors in Semi-Final

Our minors had a great win over St Manachan’s in what was a game of great drama on Wednesday last in Kiltubrid. This was an absolute see-saw of a game, we got a great start with a goal and a point from Conor Moran. Mohill followed with a goal and then we had a stroke of fortune with a goal from a sideline kick from Brian Beirne. The second half was equally dramatic with great goals from Conor Moran again and another from Mark McGrory. Jack Cullen got a significant point and with the game level in the final minutes, Conor Moran and Andrew Burns got the scores to put us over the line to win by 4-7 to 3-8. This victory puts Seán O’Heslins into the Minor Championship Final for the first time since 1995. Since then, as Oughteragh Gaels, in combination with Aughnasheelin, we have been in three finals and won two, but the significance of making the final on our own is a major breakthrough.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Kevin Banks, Eoin McHugh, Cyril Smith, Keelan McHugh, Jack Cullen, David McLoughlin, Brian Beirne, Andrew Burns, Conor Moran, John Fanning, Dean McGovern, Mark McGrory, Stephen McTague, Luke Murphy.

Flags Out

It would be good to see houses, shops, schools etc displaying the club’s colours before the Minor Final on Sunday. Also to see everyone from the town there to support the lads.

Under 16 Championship

Our under 16s lost to St Manachan’s by 2-13 to 1-11 last week. Due to the Minor Final they have no game this week.

Dublin Player with Leitrim top

Dublin players did an unusual thing on Sunday when they worn tops over their jerseys while meeting the Uachtarán, Mary McAleese and in the pre-match parade around the pitch. They wore a variety of Dublin tops but the odd man out was Diarmuid Connolly who wore a Leitrim top with the Leitrim crest. One wonders is there a Leitrim connection.

U-12 Footballers win Plunkett Cup

We played our second round in the league in the Park on Thursday last against Allen Gaels and had a good win. We also played our third game on Mon evening in Aughawillan against Garadice Gaels which also doubled up as the annual Plunkett Cup. It was a game played in very difficult conditions and both sets of players gave a great exhibition on a very wet evening. Garadice Gaels were on top in the 1st half and we dominated the 2nd half to win on a scoreline of 3-7 to 3-1. Congratulations to the panel which was as follows: Jack Gallogly, Dylan Beirne, Conor McGrath, Cathal McHugh, Edvinus Mattadus, Mark Maguire, Stephen Flynn, Christopher Maguire, Barry McGovern, John Conway, Emma McGovern (C), Tom Prior, Sean Christie Daire Gleeson, Nathan McCartin, Thomas Darcy, Keelan Creamer, Danny Smith, Eoin Curran. Our next game is on Mon eve 26th at 6.30pm in the Park v Annaduff.

Best wishes

All involved with the Seán O’Heslin’s club send their best wishes to Maeve McGivern, who is recovering in hospital in London at the moment. We all wish Maeve a speedy recovery and safe return to Ballinamore.

Scéalta na Seachtaine- 12 Mean Fomhair 2011

Cluichí don Deireadh seachtaine

At time of writing it is likely that weekend fixtures will be as follows: Junior B Championship Quarter Final in Cloone on Friday night. Division 2 league final on Saturday at 4pm

Juniors Lose Semi-Final by Two Points.

It was a weekend of hard luck stories with our Ladies losing the Intermediate Final by three points when they should have won and out Juniors losing the Junior Championship Final by two points when they could have won. This was a thrilling game all through and there were some excellent performances especially from Kevin O’Connor who took to his new role in attack getting four points from play. For the past few years we have been desperately close in the concluding stages of the Junior Championship and this was no exception. Overall a great performance and hard luck in the final minutes when shots from both Rory O’Rourke and Shane Creamer both just went over the crossbar when, with a bit of luck, they could have been under. See match report in Observer.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Kevin Prior, Paddy McLoughlin, Gordon Hughes, Eoin McHugh, Kevin O’Connor (0-4), John Fanning, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Brian Beirne (0-4, 2f), Neil Hughes (0-1), Stephen McTague, Éamon Walsh, Mark McGrory, Diarmuid Keegan, Tommy McCormack (0-3f). Rory O’Rourke (0-2), for Denis Dolan, Shane Creamer (0-2) for E Walsh, Sean McCartin for S McTague, Jason Kellett for D Keegan, Andrew Burns for M McGrory.

Ladies Cruel Luck in  Intermediate Final

It was heartbreak for our Ladies team in the intermediate Final in Cloone on Sunday. Talk about kicking a game away!!. This really was a disaster. It has to be said every player on the team gave it their all but the scores just would not go up on the board. It was also a very windy day which made scoring difficult but it was cruel luck to hit 19 wides, ten in the first half and nine in the second, while St Mary’s had five in the whole hour. O’Heslins were far the better team over the hour but St Mary’s were brilliant at taking long range points from the few chances they got. While the girls were behind for most of the game it only looked a matter of time before they would get the scores, such was their dominance. Even in the final minute it took a brilliant save from the St Mary’s goalie to deny Sarah McLoughlin the equalizer. It ended 3-8 to 3-5 for St Mary’s See full match report in the Observer. We wish a speedy recovery to Niamh Smith who injured her ankle in training and missed the final.

Foireann: Carol O’Connor, Claire Fanning, Linda Harte, Aine Martin, Emma O’Dell, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan, Sarah McLoughlin (1-3), Ciara O’ Dowd, Laura O’ Dowd (1-1), Orla McWeeney, Michelle Fanning, Gillian Leyden, Deborah Gilheany (1-1), Aoibheann Flynn Sub: Méabh Gleason, for Gillian Leyden (Picture of team under Pictures/Ladies )

Seniors Beat Aughnasheelin in Final League game

Our seniors beat Aughnasheelin on Sunday morning by 0-10 to 0-8. Thus we ended on top of the table winning eight of the nine games and drawing with Eslin.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Mathew Murphy, David Duignan, Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy, Wayne McKeon, Liam Ferguson, Adrian Smith, Shane Moran, Shane Murphy, Johnny McWeeney, Brian Cafferty, Shane McWeeney, Sean Murray, James McWeeney. Subs used: Kevin O’Connor and John Fanning.

Stephen McTague, who was absent due to illness on the previous Wednesday, was a big addition on Wednesday last.

Seniors Lose in Championship Semi-Final

A Senior Championship is as far away as ever after we were comprehensively beaten by Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday last. We were beaten by 2-14 to 1-4 and it really was as the score suggests. Glencar/Manor were up 1-5 before Shane Moran got our first and only point in the first half after 24 minutes. By half time it was 1-9 to 0-1 and while we had the wind behind us for the second half, it would have taken Hurricane Irene at her best to make any difference. Nobody could have expected this and it probably boils down to being beaten by a far better team. The league is left and hopefully a win in the Final will help matters, promotion on its own is not enough.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Mathew Murphy, David Duignan (0-1f), Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson (1-0), Wayne McKeon, Shane Moran (0-4), Shane Murphy, Johnny McWeeney, Seán Murray, Shane McWeeney (0-1f), Adrian Smith, Paul Prior (0-1). Subs used: Brian Cafferty, James McWeeney, Paul McLoughlin, Tommy McCormack, Kevin O’Connor.

Ladies qualify for Intermediate Final

Our Ladies qualified for the Intermediate Final with a decisive win over Ballinaglera in the semi-final last Saturday by 3-15 to 0-6. The game however, was much closer than the scoreline suggests. This has been amazing progress for the team that won the Junior Championship last year. They now play St Mary’s in the Final in Cloone on Sunday next at 4.00pm

Foireann: Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Linda Harte, Aine Martin, Emma O’Dell, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan, Sarah McLoughlin, Ciara O’ Dowd (1-4), Laura O’ Dowd (0-6), Orla McWeeney (0-1), Michelle Fanning, Gillian Leyden, Deborah Gilheany (2-3), Méabh Gleason, Subs: Aoibheann Flynn (0-1), Aoibheann Curran, Celine Charles.

Juniors Beat St Caillin’s in B Championship

Our second junior team qualified for the quarter finals of the championship with a 2-10 to 1-5 win over St Caillins on Sunday. They led by 1-5 to 0-2 at half-time with Seán McCartin’s goal giving them a good cushion. In the second half Ciaran Murray’s goal was decisive along with points from substitutes Michael Costello (two) and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin. Andrew Burns also got a couple of good points. The half back line of Jack Cullen, Kevin Prior and Kevin Banks was our strongest line throughout and kept Fenagh at bay.

Foireann: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, David Earley, Joe Honeyman, Shane Creamer, Jack Cullen, Kevin Prior, Kevin Banks, Jason Kellett, David Leyden, Andrew Burns, Ciaran Murray, Adrian Murphy, Daryl McFarland, Adrian Gallogly, Seán McCartin. Subs: Michael Costello and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin

Minor Championship

Our Minors lost to Drumkeerin on Wednesday last, a result which has opened up the whole competition. As a result there is now a three-way play-off to see who meets Glencar/Manorhamilton in the final. The draw has paired us against Drumkeerin again on this Wednesday at 7.00 in Kiltubrid. The first half against Drumkeerin was a very changeable affair. Drumkeerin started well and had 1-1 up in minutes. Then we took over and had a pointed free from Luke Murphy, then three pointed frees from Brian Beirne and a goal finished by John Fanning. It was 1-4 to 1-1 and we were coasting. However we didn’t get another score in the half and Drumkeerin got 1-6 to lead by 2-7 to 1-4 at half time. The second half was much closer and two great goals from Mark McGrory kept us in it until the end but we couldn’t get closer than the final score of 3-12 to 3-7.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Kevin Banks, Anthony Maguire, Cyril Smith, Conor Moran, Jack Cullen, Keelan McHugh, Brian Beirne, Andrew Burns, David McLoughlin, John Fanning, Dean McGovern, Mark McGrory, Eoin McHugh, Luke Murphy. Sub: Brian Leyden for Anthony Maguire.

Seniors in Championship Semi-Final on Saturday

Saturday is another big occasion for our seniors who are in the Senior Championship semi-final for the first time since 1998. They play Glencar/Manorhamilton in Páirc Seán on Saturday at 6.30. Hoping to see big support there for the team. Our Junior B team play St Caillins on this Sunday.

Ladies in Intermediate Semi-Final

Ladies play in the Intermediate Championship semi-final on Sunday at 12.00 in Drumshanbo against Ballinaglera. Under 16s play Dromahair tonight at 7.00 in Dromahair.

Correction re Aughawillan Games

Last week we mentioned that Ballinamore hadn’t met Aughawillan in the Senior Championship since 1994 and hadn’t beaten them since 1991. However, one observant club member has pointed out to us that the story isn’t that bad. We met and beat Aughawillan in 2001 by1-10 to 1-9. Ciaran Murray got a late goal in that game.

Juniors in Junior A Championship Semi Final

Our Junior A team had a hard-fought victory over Allen Gaels on Friday night in Cloone. They led at half time by 0-6 to 0-5 and despite being down to 14 men they still managed to win by 0-10 to 0-7. This is turning out to be a great year for our adult teams with seniors and juniors both in the respective semi-finals. See report in sports pages

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Gordon Hughes, Patrick McLoughlin, Kevin prior, Eoin McHugh, Kevin O’Connor, John Fanning, Brian Beirne, Paul McLoughlin, Stephen McTague, Brian Cafferty, Anthony McTague, Mark McGrory, Ryan Gavin, Tommy McCormack: Subs used: Diarmuid Keegan, Shane Creamer, Éamon Walsh.

Harvest Jamboree – A big success

Our Harvest Jamboree on Saturday was a great success with over 400 people present.  There was eating and drinking and then entertainment directed by Tommy Moran and John O’Connell and no better men to get the crowd going. There was a big raffle for prizes sponsored by Gay D’Arcy, The Clarion Hotel, Sligo, Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, Slieve Russell Hotel and Ciaran and Cathy Smyth. Many thanks to all of those sponsors. The whole event was organised by club Cathaoirleach Peter Reynolds and his team of helpers. Míle buíochas to all of them.

Minor Championship

Our Minors beat St Mary’s in the championship on Wednesday last by 2-16 to 2-13, to keep their chances alive.  They play Drumkeerin tonight in the final game in Ballinamore.

Under 14 Final

Our under 14s put up a brave display against St Manachan’s on Sunday last in the Under 14 Championship Final and but for a number of missed chances they could have been much closer in the end. Overall the 3-11 to 2-2 scoreline did not do justice to their efforts. See full report in sports pages.

Seniors in Championship Semi-Final

For the first time since 1998 our seniors have reached the Semi-Final of the Championship. Last Saturday’s win over Aughawillan was a significant breakthrough in more ways than one. Some of our current seniors weren’t born when we last beat Aughawillan in the Senior Championship. Yes, it is all of 20 years ago since we beat Aughawillan on our way to the 1991 Final. The last meeting between the teams was in 1994 when Aughawillan won. Ironically our paths havn’t crossed in senior Championship since then. Saturday’s win was a great boost to the team, especially to get to a semi-final and the performance was as good as the final score suggests. From the time Wayne McKeon scored our first point to the final whistle, we were never behind, but Aughawillan certainly fought all of the way and brought it to level pegging at 0-3 each at one stage of the first half. . Midway through the second half Aughawillan came within a point at 0-8 to 0-7 but five points in a row from Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney (free), Shane Murphy again, Sean Murphy and James McWeeney (free) gave us the six point lead that left it safe. It ended 0-13 to 0-8. Overall it was a very pleasing display and sets us up for a crack at Glencar/Manorhamilton in the semi-final.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Duignan, Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Wayne McKeon (0-2), Shane Moran (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-2), Johnny McWeeney, Seán Murray (0-1), Paul Prior (0-1f), Adrian Smith, Shane McWeeney (0-4,3f). Subs: Brian Cafferty for A Smith, James McWeeney (0-1f) for P Prior, Tommy McCormack for S Murphy.

Cluichí don Deireadh Seachtaine

Our eagerly awaited Senior Championship quarter final against Aughawillan is taking place on Saturday evening in Cloone starting at 6.45. There will be an Under 21 B All Ireland Semi-final in the Park on Saturday between Donegal and Westmeath at 2.00pm. Stewards required.

Harvest Jamboree – Are you booked in?

The Harvest Jamboree is now just a week away, on Saturday 27 August and there is still room for more tables.  This was the “social event of the year” this time last year and it promises to be the same this year. After the Festival, it is the remaining big event for the town and countryside around Ballinamore until next Christmas. It will again be held in the exciting marquee location and there will be bar facilities and great music for the night. Anyone who would like to take a table for ten people, or if you wish to attend the event as an individual or couple please contact Celia 087 9272412 or Helena at 087 2378514.  The contribution is €15 per person and the event is a major fundraiser for the club.

Juniors in Junior A Championship Semi-Final

Our Juniors had a good win over Carrigallen in their second game and their victory by 1-9 to 1-8 means that they top their group, like our seniors, and are now in the Junior A Championship quarter final where they will face Allen Gaels. They struggled to get on top of Carrigallen but good scores from Stephen McTague and Tommy McCormack, in particular, pulled them through.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Gordon Hughes, Patrick McLoughlin, Neil Hughes, John Fanning, Kevin O’Connor, Eoin McHugh, Brian Beirne, Paul McLoughlin, Stephen McTague, Brian Cafferty, Anthony McTague, Tommy McCormack, Diarmuid Keegan, Mark McGrory. Subs: Kevin Prior for Neil Hughes, Rory O’Rourke for Diarmuid Keegan.

Juniors beat St Osnat’s in Junior B Championship

Andrew Burns was the hero of this game and his three goals were the difference between the teams. Andrew hit the net three times, once in the first half and twice in the second and each in turn, put paid to St Osnat’s chances. It was a good start to our adventure at a higher level for this team. They won the C Championship last year, but they had never beaten St Osnatts in the Championship before. Sean McCartin was our chief scorer in the first half with two pointed frees and one from play and Adrian Gallogly got two good points also. Adrian Murphy got a point also but Andrew Burns’ goal gave us the 1-6 to 0-5 cushion at half time. Adrian Murphy was first on the score sheet in the second half before Andrew Burns pointed and he quickly followed with his second goal. We were looking comfortable at 2-8 to 0-6 but then St Osnat’s got a goal. Adrian Murphy got another point but Osnat’s got two. However Sean McCartin pointed a free and Andrew Burns got his third goal when he deflected into the net and that left it 3-10 to 1-8 which is a very healthy start in a group where we now meet Glencar/Manorhamilton’s third team and Fenagh St Caillin’s second.

Foireann: Peter Reynolds, Gavin Brennan, Joe Honeyman, Shane Creamer, Jack Cullen, Freddie Walsh, Kevin Banks, Jason Kellett, Kevin Prior, Andrew Burns (3-1), Ciaran Murray, Adrian Murphy (0-3), Daryl McFarland, Adrian Gallogly (0-2), Sean McCartin (0-4). Sub used: David Earley for Daryl McFarland.

Army Band to perform at opening of Reading Groups Project

The Sean O’Heslins Readers Group Project will be launched in the marquee on Friday night of next week, 26 August. This event is open to the public and the club is very keen to see a big crowd there to. There will be a brief formal launch of the project but the highlight of the night will be a musical performance by the Army Band of the Western Brigade. The club would like to thank the Leitrim GAA Club of New York annual golf classic for the continued support of the event. Special thanks to Pat Murray, formerly of Killaneen, who initiated the New York Leitrim GAA Club’s support.

Christy Gallogly under 16 Tournament.

After a series of games, Sean O’Heslins and Castleknock from Dublin qualified for the finals. The Dublin team were by far the stronger and ran out deserving winners of the Final. After the final, Tommy Moran paid tribute to the late great Christy Gallogly and outlined all of the work he did in his time for Seán O’Heslins. The new trophy was presented to the winning Captain by Christy’s son Brian Gallogly and the medals were presented by his daughter, Olive. .

Greetings from Singapore

News from Brendan Wisely in Singapore “Greetings from Singapore. It’s that time of year again, where all of Asia is getting ready for the upcoming Asian Gaelic Games (October 14th -16th). This year the event is being held in Seoul, Korea. To be exact in the suburb, called Suwon. Suwon is the only remaining completely walled city in South Korea. One interesting fact is that the games will be held  at the grounds of the World Cup Stadium, another is that Park Ji-Sung, the Manchester Footballer, was born and grew up in this area. So here’s hoping to see the legendary Hugh Gough make his annual pilgrimage and if the Gods are really shining that Pat Travers is still out in Seoul, since the last world cup. Who knows we may have another Ballinamore man, line out for Singapore GFC.” Míle buíochas A Bhreandáin.

Seniors Lose but through to Quarter-finals.

Our seniors played out their final Championship group match in Páirc Seán on Saturday evening against Annaduff. There were three changes from the team that started against Drumreilly in Cloone due to injuries, Jim McTague, Joe Murphy & Ronan O’Rourke all sitting this one out. We struggled in the first half, scores were hard to come by, Shane McWeeney and Paul Prior both pointing from frees. Were it not for an excellent goal from Sean Murray after a nice passing movement, we would have been out of the picture at half time. Annaduff led by 0-8 to 1-3 at the break.

The second half was much closer, and while we enjoyed a lot of possession, we struggled to get into the scoring zone for long periods. Brian Cafferty got our only score from play in the second half, while Shane McWeeney was on target scoring three points all from frees. Our best performances came from Philip & Matthew Murphy, Wayne McKeon & Shane McWeeney. Overall a very exciting game in slippy conditions with both teams securing a place in the quarter finals and crucially, another year of senior championship football in 2012.

Team and Scorers: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, Paddy McLoughlin, David Duignan, Philip Murphy, Liam Ferguson, Anthony McTague, Wayne McKeon, Shane Moran, Shane Murphy, Johnny McWeeney, Paul Prior (0-1 free) Sean Murray (1-1), Adrian Smith, Shane McWeeney (0-4, 4f).  Subs used James McWeeney for Shane Murphy, Brian Cafferty (0-1) for Paul Prior, Paul McLoughlin for Adrian Smith.

Army Band to perform at opening of Reading Groups Project

Sean O’Heslins GAA club has been instrumental in initiating a number of cross border and cross-community projects which has broadened the work of the club and has been the subject of much favourable comment at different levels. Last year the club was instrumental in organising a cross-border sporting event which drew underage teams clubs from Cavan, Fermanagh and Leitrim together from a range of sports. This year the focus is reading groups and, in conjunction with Leitrim County Library, cross-community readers groups from Leitrim, Cavan, Fermanagh and Tyrone will be brought together over the next two years culminating in a major event in Ballinamore each year. The launch of this project will take place in the Sean O’Heslins marquee on the Friday 26 August. The Army Band of the Western Command will give a musical performance at the launch. Admission is free to this event and the public are invited to attend.

American Tea Party

The highlight of the Harvest Jamboree Weekend is the American Tea Party on the Saturday night. This year’s event promises to surpass last year and already the quota of tables is nearly full. We advise you to book your table or your place at one of the hosts’ tables as soon as possible.  Please ring Helena D’Arcy or Celia Donohoe without delay. There will be bar facilities and great music for the night.

Monster Bingo on Sunday 28

This event is being sponsored by the Leitrim GAA Club of New York annual golf classic and the Sean O’Heslins club would like to express their thanks for the continued support of the event. Christy Gallogly under 16 Tournament.

Christy Gallogly was one of the legendary figures behind the Seán O’Heslins club. His name will forever be linked with the great Senior and underage teams of the 1960s and 1970s in particular. He was also behind many of the great successes of the Vocational Schools and St Felim’s teams during the same era. Christy was club Cathaoirleach from 1971 to 1974 and was Rúnaí from 1957-1970 for all but one year. This year the club is organising an under 16 tournament which will be named after him. The inaugural Christy Gallogly Memorial Tournament starts this Thursday at 7:30pm with U16 boys teams from Leitrim, Roscommon, Cavan, Fermanagh, Longford and Dublin. On  Thursday Ballinamore play Lisnaskea and Templeport play Boyle, both matches at 7.30. Friday Enniskillen Gaels play Skerries at 5.30 and Castleknock play Longford Slashers at 7.30pm. On Monday we were surprised by St Francis in a game we looked to be winning with minutes to go. The score in this one was the same only the other way around: St Frances 1-10 Sean O’Heslins 1-9. However all is not lost

Great start for Juniors in Junior A Championship

Our Junior A team made a great start to the Championship with a deserved win over Annaduff on Sunday last. If one were to dwell on league form we would have had little chance in this encounter. Annaduff have played seven league games and only lost one. We have played seven and won none. However, last year we had a team which won the Junior C Championship and they were bottom of the relevant league also. At any rate our juniors gave a superb performance on Sunday in Cloone. In the first half we got great points from Anthony McTague, Brian Cafferty and Tommy McCormack as well as Diarmuid Keegan who replaced the injured Ryan Gavin. At half time we led by 0-7 to 0-4. It was a very keenly contested game and experience has shown us that Annaduff never give up easily and neither did they. Paul McLoughlin started our second half with two great points and eventually we got four clear 0-11 to 0-5.  Then came a brilliant passing movement between Brian Cafferty and Anthony McTague which ended with Diarmuid Keegan and he finished brilliantly to the net. It was as good as you would see anywhere. However Annaduff weren’t finished and they got it back to 1-11 to 0-8. Then a disastrous long free into our square was misjudged by goalkeeper and backs and it ended up in the net. However, the lads got it back on track and Éamon Walsh got a good point, Tommy McCormack pointed a free and Brian Beirne got the last and it finished 1-14 to 1-9. Tosnú maith!

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Neil Hughes, Patrick McLoughlin, Gordon Hughes, Eoin McHugh, Kevin O’Connor, John Fanning, Brian Beirne (0-1), Paul McLoughlin (0-2), Stephen McTague, Brian Cafferty (0-2), Anthony McTague (0-3), Éamon Walsh (0-1), Ryan Gavin, Tommy McCormack (0-4). Subs: Diarmuid Keegan (1-1) for R Gavin, Rory O’Rourke for Éamon Walsh, Jason Kellett for Patrick McLoughlin.

Under 14 Hurlers win Championship

Our under 14 hurlers put in a great performance to win the under 14 Championship Final last Saturday against Manorhamilton. They had earlier lost to Manorhamilton in the ordinary round. The final was played at 13 a side and was keenly contested all through. Manorhamilton had the better start and were a goal up after 20 minutes.  They got another before half time and the second half battle really went down to the wire.  There were outstanding performances by everyone on the panel. Pearse Dolan was outstanding in the first half and Kevin Mullen, Donal Feely, Aaron McLoughlin and Conor Cullen in the second half ensured a fantastic victory. The final score was: Ballinamore 3-7 Cluainín 2-6. Congratulations to the whole team and their great team of mentors: Paddy O’Connor, Dan O’Brien, Kevin O’Connor and Conor Harte. Ballinamore last won the under 14 championship in 2008 and this is the sixth time the under 14 championship has come to Ballinamore since it started in 1966

Foireann: Barry McGovern, Kevin Mullen, Michael Prior, James Hamill, Pearse Dolan, Aaron McLoughlin, Donal Feely, Conor Cullen, Oisín McCaffrey, Niall McGovern, Caillin O’Rourke, Peter Reynolds, Alan Dooner. Seniors Over First Hurdle

Our seniors had a very satisfying first outing in the Senior Championship on Saturday in Cloone. Despite falling three points behind before Shane McWeeney got our first point, we finished strongly to lead at half-time by 0-6 to 0-5. There were some great scores in this half from both sides, with Paul Prior in excellent form, pointing three difficult frees in a row. John McWeeney and Shane Moran also pointed. The question was could we do better in the second half and we certainly did. Shane McWeeney, Wayne McKeon, David Duignan, Sean Murray, James McWeeney and Philip Murphy all got on the score sheet. As the half went on the more we advanced and it ended 0-15 to 0-8. There were great performances all through the field, with Shane Moran and Shane McWeeney really outstanding. Our scoring rate was good too, with just eight wides through the hour to Drumreilly’s nine. Once again we seem to up our performance for the championship and supporters were very pleased with the opening day in Cloone.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Duignan (0-1), Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy (0-1), Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson, Shane Moran (0-1), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Shane Murphy, Johnny McWeeney (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, Paul Prior (0-5), Adrian Smith, Shane McWeeney (0-2). Scéalta na Seachtaine- 18 Iuil 2011

Cluichí don Deireadh Seachtaine

Senior Championship time is here again and on Saturday next we take on Drumreilly the first round in Cloone at 6.00pm. We would urge all our supporters to be there and we especially ask parents to bring the underage boys and girls to introduce them to the club senior scene. Junior A championship is on Sunday, 31 July  in Cloone  against Annaduff at 1.30pm.

Seniors in Division 2 Final

Our seniors clinched a place in the Gallogly Catering Division 2 League Final and also won promotion to Division 1 for next year, all the result of their victory over Cloone by 1-12 to 0-5 on Saturday. Fortunately our Seniors stay in Division 2 has not been as long as the last time they were playing there. Just twelve months ago they were relegated to Division 2 after two seasons in Division 1. Before that we had seven barren years in Division 2. It has been a good run this year, with one game left against Aughnasheelin, the team has won seven and drawn one, which puts them in top place. On Saturday they were on top throughout the game. They led by 0-8 to 0-2 at half time and a goal from Johnny McWeeney early in the second half really finished it. It ended 1-13 to 0-5.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Philip Murphy, David Duignan, Joe Murphy, Matthew Murphy, Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Shane Moran, Wayne McKeon, Shane Murphy (0-1), Johnny McWeeney (1-2), Rory O’Rourke (0-2), Paul Prior (0-1), Adrian Smith (0-2), Shane McWeeney (0-2). Subs: Anthony McTague for Jim McTague, Brian Cafferty for Paul Prior, James McWeeney(0-2) for John McWeeney, Ryan Gavin for Adrian Smith.

Dramatic win for Under 16s in League Final

Sean O’Heslin’s under 16s defied the odds to beat Mohill last Monday in what was one of the best victories for Ballinamore at any age level in recent years. Coming into the game Mohill were firm favourites and had beaten Seán O’Heslins in both the Under 14 and Minor League Finals this year. The Ballinamore lads were determined not to lose another final and indeed most of them would have figured on either the Minor or under 14 teams. It really was a hard won game that could have gone either way up to the final whistle. Early on Mohill got a lucky goal that went in over Cian McCaffrey’s hands, but Cian turned out to be the hero in the closing ten minutes with a brilliant save at the other end. At one stage the Ballinamore lads were 1-5 to 0-3 behind but they fought back wonderfully to be ahead by 1-7 to 1-5 at half time. There were some excellent scores in this half: Three great ones from Kevin Mullen, two from Luke Murphy and one each from Peter Reynolds and Paddy Connaughton. but the goal by Luke Murphy was a wonderful piece of individual brilliance.  We had the advantage of the wind in the second half and Paddy Connaughton got the first point but then Mohill came back strongly and with four points in a row, they were one ahead. Peter Reynolds really dominated for the next while and brought Ballinamore back in the lead with three points in a row, two from frees. Then Keelan McHugh scored the best score of the game with a huge individual effort when he soloed half of the field and finished with a point. At that stage we were three up again but Mohill got two back and we were hanging on for dear life for ages by a single point and then a lucky break finally decided it. If Mohill’s first goal was lucky, so too was our second. As the ball was heading wide Peter Reynolds somehow diverted it and Paddy Connaughton was in like a shot to put it into the net. It was the winning goal in the end and it finished 2-12 to 1-12.

This was Ballinamore’s second time to win the Under 16 Division 1 league since it started in1985. The only other time was in 2005 and indeed this was only our third time to contest the final. After the game, the cup was presented to the winning captain Anthony Maguire by Coiste na nÓg Cathaoirleach, Terence Boyle. Anthony was also captain when we won the Under 14 League two years ago. Great credit goes to team mentors Ollie Honeyman, Raymond McHugh and Patsy Connaughton. There were scenes of great excitement both in Páirc Seán and on the return to Ballinamore and at last an underage title came our way this year. (See full report of match in Leitrim Observer)

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Niall McGovern, Conor Moran, Brian Banks, Brian Leyden, Keelan McHugh, James Hamill, Dean McGovern, Anthony Maguire, Donal Feely, Luke Murphy, Kevin Mullan, Patrick Connaughton, Peter Reynolds, Oisín McCaffrey. Subs used: Conor Maxwell. Other panel members: Fergal Curran, Conor Maxwell. Mark O`Reilly, Daire Murphy, Darren Maxwell and Billy Williams.

Juniors lose to Annaduff in Division 2

Our juniors lost heavily to Annaduff on Sunday despite the fact that we had more than half of our senior team on board. Annaduff probably had a lot of their seniors playing as well but the had to contend with the fact that they were a man down from early in the game, but still won handsomely and led all through. At half time it was Annaduff 2-7 to 0-5. The second half was more even but it ended Annaduff winning by 2-11 to 0-7.

Foireann: Rory O’Rourke, Gordon Hughes, Kevin Prior, Matthew Murphy, Eoin McHugh, Philip Murphy, Neil Hughes, Adrian Smith, Brian Cafferty (0-2), Anthony McTague, James McWeeney (0-3), Paul Prior, Tommy McCormack, Brian Beirne (0-2), Sean McCartin. Subs used: Joe Murphy, Shane McWeeney, Shane Murphy, Ryan Gavin

Comhbhrón

The club extends sympathy to one of our former players, Martin McDermott, whose wife, Maura, died last week. Martin was from Ballaghdereen, Co Mayo. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sí.

Harvest Jamboree Weekend

There are now seven weeks to go to the Harvest Jamboree Weekend. This year there will be a whole weekend of activity, starting on the Friday night. On the Saturday the American Tea Party will take place. Last year’s was a memorable event as close on 500 people packed the marquee for eating, drinking, music and entertainment. This year’s promises to be even bigger and better. On the Sunday, there will be a “Take-me-out” event. Now what exactly is that, you may ask? In days past we often heard of “taking a fellow out” on the football field, and there was nothing romantic about that. However we are told this is a more romantic event but we will have details about in the weeks ahead. If you would like to organise a table for the American Tea Party, or just join in on a table, please contact Celia Donohoe or Helena D’Arcy.

Junior win in Division 5

Juniors win first game in Division 5. There was a great turn-out for the Division 5 game against Gortletteragh on Sunday and it also turned out to be our first win in the division. In the first half the forwards were in scoring form with Tommy McCormack getting four points, Sean McCartin three, Éamon Walsh two, Adrian Murphy two and one each from Brian Beirne, Stephen McTague and Jack Cullen. With the half time score at 0-14 to 0-3 it was all over. It ended 1-25 to 1-7. This lifts us one place from the bottom, just above Gortletteragh.

Leitrim Girls win in Connacht

Leitrim Ladies won their first round All Ireland Intermediate Championship against Roscommon on Saturday. Their next game is in Ballinamore on Saturday next against Antrim in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin at 4.30

Under 14 Girls great Performance at Féile

Our Cailíní faoi 14 put up a great performance at Féile in Cork last weekend. They were based in Youghal and the beat the home club in the first round. They beat Ballypheane in the second game and lost their third round to Newmarket. However they qualified for the semi-final of Division 4 through score difference. In the semi-final they gave a great performance and lost by just five points 4-4 to 3-2 to Bandon. The girls had a great time and were accommodated by the host club, Youghal. Míle buíochas to all of the parents who accommodated the girls. Congratulations to the team’s mentors: Sarah McLoughlin, Kirby Gilgunn and Carol O’Connor. Twelve families also travelled with the group and they enjoyed their stay also. Glencar/Manorhamilton gave us a walk-over in the Division 2 league on Sunday. It keeps us on top of the Division 2 League but a game would have been better.

Our Division 3 team were well beaten by Ballinaglera on Sunday. The put up a good performance for the first twenty minutes when there was just a point in it at 0-6 to 0-5. However, by half-time it was 1-11 to 0-6 and it ended 1-19 to 1-12.

James Gallogly

Sympathy is extended to the Gallogly family on the death of James Gallogly which occurred in Birr, Co Offaly last week. James was a native of Drumraine, but worked in Birr for a long number of years. James played in goals for Sean O’Heslins for a long number of years and was on the teams that won the senior championship in 1964 and 1967. He continued to have a great interest in the progress of his home club throughout the years. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

50 Years ago – Connacht Senior Championship in Ballinamore

Fifty years ago this weekend, the one and only Connacht Senior Championship game ever played in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin took place there. This was the meeting of Galway and Leitrim in the Connacht Senior Championship semi-final. A large crowd turned up on a very wet day and the match was even more memorable as it was broadcast live from the venue by Micheál Ó Hehir. There was great anticipation as the teams took the field and Paddy Dolan got the first point. This was followed by points from Patsy Guckian, Mick Kelly and Cathal Flynn. Galway got a goal from Sean Purcell but Guckian got a Leitrim goal and Packy McGarty and Paddy Dolan got further points. At this stage Leitrim led by 1-6 to 1-0. However, by half-time Galway had got two goals and led by a point, 3-2 to 1-7. Leitrim didn’t do as well in the second half and lost by 4-11 to 2-9.   Good and all as the facilities are in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin now, it is hard to imagine a Connacht Senior Championship being played there now. This year, despite the recession, there were crowds of 7,000 in Sligo and 13,000 in Páirc Seán, making it impossible to stage such games in places like Ballinamore. It is hard to tell how many were in Ballinamore on that far-off day in 1961, but there were probably between 5,000 to 6,000 present. There was no stand and no toilets but there was a lorry to allow Michael O’Hehir get a good view of the game.  There was also an old railway carriage for a dressing room and a makeshift score board on the roof of it.

Apart from the legendary Seán Purcell and Jack Mahon, the Galway team contained many of the players who would subsequently figure on the great All Ireland three-in-a-row winning teams of 1964-1966: Sean Meade, John Donnellan, Martin Newell, Mattie McDonagh, Mick Garrett, Cyril Dunne, Pat Donnellan and John Keenan.

The Leitrim team in 1961 contained some of the legendary players from the great era in the 1950s. The Leitrim team on that historic occasion 50 years ago was: Paudge McGowan (Melvin Gaels), Brian Cotter (Carrick), Jack Reynolds (Aughavas), Tony Hayden (Bornacoola), Josie Murray (Carrick), Jack Faughnan (Annaduff), Tom Colreavy (Gortletteragh), Packy McGarty (London), Seamus Brogan (Ballinamore), Mick Kelly (Melvin Gaels), Jimmy O’Donnell (Manorhamilton), P Ward (Carrick), Patsy Guckian (Carrick), Paddy Dolan (Ballinamore), Cathal Flynn (Sean McDermott’s, Dublin). Subs who came on were: M Collins and O Murray.

Seniors lose to Mohill in Shield

Our seniors were short a number of regulars for their shield game against Mohill on Saturday. It was a good test for those who played and they did well enough in the first half, just 1-7 to 1-3 behind. Two points from Paul Prior and one from Adrian Smith brought us within a score of Mohill but then a snap goal put Mohill in charge again. It ended 3-8 to 1-8 for Mohill.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin, Philip Murphy, John McWeeney, Kevin O’Connor, Ronan O’Rourke, Jim McTague, Shane Murphy, Adrian Smith, Shane Moran, Brian Beirne, James McWeeney, Shane McWeeney, Tommy McCormack, Sean Murray, Paul Prior.

First Point for Juniors in Division 5

This was the sixth match we played in Division 5 this year and the best result we got so far. Indeed we had enough possession to have won the game but it was good to see the effort put in and it was a close enjoyable game throughout. We were three points behind when Daryl McFarland finished for a good goal. Diarmuid Keegan and Brian Beirne got points and we were 0-6 to 1-2 behind at half time. In the second half Brian Beirne pointed a 50 and Sean McCartin pointed a free but we were three points down when Diarmuid Keegan levelled with a great shot for a goal. Manorhamilton went ahead a couple of times but Ryan Gavin brought it back to one and Sean McCartin pointed from a free to level it with time near up. Again it was good to be able to field a full team even if we had no subs. Notably, this was Jack Cullen’s first adult game and his fitness was evident in a few runs he made up the field. Good also to see Cillian Cronin who hasn’t played for the club in a good few years. We must also pay tribute to Glencar/Manorhamilton as this is their fourth team and they did well to have a team to travel the 35 miles to Ballinamore.

Foireann: Peter Reynolds, Jack Cullen, Gavin Brennan, Eoin McHugh, Éamon Walsh, Joe Murphy, Neil Hughes, Brian Beirne (0-2), Ciarán Murray, Adrian Smith, Diarmuid Keegan (1-1), Sean McCartin (0-2), Daryl McFarland (1-0), Ryan Gavin (0-1), Cillian Cronin.

Seniors overcome Fenagh St Caillin’s

Our seniors maintained their place at the top of Division 2 with a good win over Fenagh on Saturday. It was close enough in the first half until Tommy McCormack pounced on a loose ball near the square and finished to the net. Fenagh got the last two points before half-time but we led by 1-8 to 0-6. We really had the better of the second half but scores were hard to come by for both sides. However two good points from Wayne McKeon and one from Liam Ferguson, who frequently slips up from half back to score, as well as a pointed free from Paul Prior left us safe at 1-12 to 0-7. Overall the scoring rate was good with few wides and all six forwards contributed which is unusual.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Duignan, Joseph Murphy, Philip Murphy, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Anthony McTague, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Adrian Smith, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Paul Prior (0-2), Ronan O’Rourke (0-2), Tommy McCormack (1-1), Shane Moran (0-1), James McWeeney (0-2). Subs used: Shane McWeeney, Brian Beirne and Shane Murphy.

Harvest Jamboree  – Big events planned for August

Remember the 21 August last year in the Park? A memorable night as about 500 people enjoyed the Harvest Jamboree in the Marquee in the Park. Well the good news is that it will be going ahead this year again on Friday 27 August, in the marquee in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin. At this stage it would be advisable to keep that night free as it will undoubtedly be a night not to be missed with entertainment and dancing for all ages. We will be asking people to organise tables as was done last year and if you have any queries at this stage please contact Celia Donohoe. There will be a whole programme of activities and entertainment in the marquee that weekend, on the Friday and Sunday also and more details will emerge over the next few weeks. The event was a major fundraiser for the club last year and we would ask your support again as great efforts are being made to clear the debt on the Park.

Juniors well beaten by Aughavas

The Aughavas club have done wonderful work on their pitch and facilities and it is now one of the finest and certainly best maintained venues in the County. On Sunday afternoon it was looking immaculate and a pleasure to play on. We had the strongest team on duty for some time in the Division 3 game on Sunday but strangely they were never in the hunt against Aughavas. At half time we were behind by 0-11 to 0-3 having played against a very strong breeze. It was presumed that we would pull back that lead in the second half but it never happened. In the end it finished 1-16 to 0-7 and we were lucky to be even that close. The only one to impress was Shane McWeeney who got some great points, but Aughavas missed several goal chances.

Foireann: Eoin McHugh, Matthew Murphy, Philip Murphy, Éamon Walsh, Shane Murphy, Joe Murphy, Anthony McTague, Adrian Smith, Brian Beirne, Shane McWeeney (0-4), Paul Prior (0-1), Brian Cafferty  (0-1), James McWeeney (0-1), Ryan Gavin, Tommy McCormack. Subs used: Diarmuid Keegan, Rory O’Rourke, Sean McCartin.

Under 16s beat Glencar/Manorhamilton

Our Under 16 won a very tight game with Glencar/Manorhamilton on Friday last. At half time they led by 0-3 to 0-2 with two points from Luke Murphy and one from Peter Reynolds. The Manorhamilton lads went ahead by 0-4 to 0-2 but from then on the Ballinamore lads got their noses in front and points from Keelan McHugh from play and from frees by Luke Murphy and two from Peter Reynolds left it 0-7 to 0-4 at the end. Foireann. : Fergal Curran, Brian Banks, Conor Moran, James Hamill, Brian Leyden, Keelan McHugh (0-1), Niall McGovern, Dean McGovern, Anthony Maguire, Donal Feely, Peter Reynolds (0-3), Billy Williams, Kevin Mullen, Luke Murphy (0-3), Cian McCaffrey, Sub used: Paddy Connaughton

Some bicycles have not been collected yet from their point of delivery in Ballinamore. Under 14 Hurling

On Saturday last the under 14 team had a good win over Gortletteragh in our Park in the first game in this year’s competition.  With a very strong wind, we built up a good lead at half time and in the second half, hard as Gortletteragh tried, they couldn’t get the goal they craved to set them on their way.

Hurling Helmets

A number of the club helmets are missing Any club member who has a Club Helmet at home please leave them back to the club rooms in the next few days.

Ladies Fixtures

Ladies received a walk-over from Ballinaglera on Sunday in the 9 a side. Please check fixtures for possible fixture this Sunday.

Death of James Dooner

James Dooner, one of the great Scór performers with Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins, passed away in Cavan Hospital last Tuesday at the relatively young age of 62.  James was an all-round talented individual who could sing, dance, recite or act and he did all to perfection. He was very involved in Scór, especially in the early years, and he was one of only two Leitrim people to win County Scór Sinsear titles in four different disciplines.

In 1973 James won the Figure Dance in Leitrim when it was a solo event. Two years later, along with Kay McAllister and Seán Creamer he won in Ballad Group.  A year later, in 1975, came his greatest Scór achievement when he reached the All Ireland Finals in Amhránaíocht Aonair. Eleven years later James was part of a Rince Seit that won the County title. James also took part in plays and musicals and always gave sterling performances.

James’ son Ross has continued in his father’s footsteps and he shares a similar record as he is one of just two people from Leitrim who have won All Ireland titles in both Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsear, both in Nuachleas. Sympathy is extended to James’ wife T I and to his son Ross and family relations. Go ndéana Dia grásta air.

Sponsored Cycle to Sligo – Míle buíochas

At 7.00am on Sunday morning last many an anxious cyclists pulled the curtains and didn’t like what they saw. The weather certainly tested the courage of our cyclists, but all forty-one togged out and headed for town and faced the road to Sligo. It was a tough run with heavy showers all the way and, worst of all, strong wind coming from the west. Many a weary body was glad to see the Sligo Park Hotel and a good dinner. It turned out a great day for Leitrim with a great result and Wayne McKeon picking up the “Man of the Match” award. Well done Wayne. Overall it was a great success and Míle buíochas to everyone.

Our Cycling Team

Forty-one cyclists started and forty-one finished the trip to Sligo:  Brian Cafferty, Patsy Connaughton, Damien Crossan, John Darcy,  Joseph, John, Mark and David Dolan, Joe Feely, Cara & Joe Gilheaney, Lynda Harte, Olly & Joey Honeyman, Diarmaid Keegan, Gerry Logan, Daryl McFarland, Raymond, Philip and Desmond McHugh, Kevin McIntyre, Patrick Beezer McKiernan, P J & Paul McLoughlin, Francis Milton, Garrett Moran, John O’Connell, Ronan O’Rourke, Sean & Brid Ó Suilleabhain, Linda O’Brien, Jennifer O’Reilly, Colm O’Reilly, Michael & John Quinn, Peter & Gerard Reynolds, Ciaran Smyth, Brendan & Dermot Sweeney, Michael Duignan. Our back up team included Marie, Carl & Paddy O Connor, Padraig O’Brien, Andrew O’Rourke, Cyril Smith, Thomas Farry, Ann Shanley and all the families who helped with transportation of the cyclists home. Thanks also to Tomas McWeeney and Drino Drinks, Ber Hamill and all the staff in the Sligo Park Hotel for the facilities made available to us on the day, we thank you all very much. Shannonside Radio, our parish newsletter and Leitrim Observer were very good to us with publicity, all the people who contributed to the collection in Sligo and all who sponsored the cyclists. Finally, getting all the pledged sponsorship in is the last part of the jigsaw and the Cycle Organiser, Brid Sullivan, will be delighted to hear from all who took part in due course. Minors narrowly beaten in Minor League Final

The favourites, St Manachan’s, won, but not without a serious battle with our minors who gave an outstanding performance, that never lacked effort and skill all through. Within minutes it looked as if we could be in trouble, but Eoin McHugh made a great save from a penalty and that settled the team. We got the first score from Stephen McTiernan and when the Manachan’s lads got a fortunate enough goal, we came back with a great finish for a goal by Mark McGrory. Good points from Andrew Burns and Brian Beirne put us two up, but Manachan’s levelled by half time at 1-4 each. When we went six points behind at 2-7 to 1-4 it looked bad but points from Brian Beirne and Stephen McTague and then another goal, fisted by Mark McGrory brought us right back to a point behind. However Manachan’s got the last two points and it ended 2-9 to 2-6. However, the performance was a great credit to the team and mentors: Patrick McKiernan, Tom Burns, Joe Feely and Patsy Connaughton. (See full report in Observer)

Foireann: Eoin McHugh, Cyril Smith, Anthony Maguire, Keelan McHugh, Conor Moran, Kevin Banks, Jack Cullen, Brian Beirne (0-2), John Fanning, David McLoughlin, Andrew Burns ()-2), Dean McGovern, Luke Murphy, Stephan McTague (0-2), Mark McGrory (2-0). Junior lose in Division 5

Our Junior got a good start when Rory O’Rourke goaled from a penalty in the first minute, and kept well in the game in the first half. Drumreilly also scored from a penalty and it was 1–5 to 1-1 at half-time. In the second half they were well beaten by a much fitter Drumreilly side. Final score was 1-12 to 1-2.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin, Adrian Murphy, Gavin Brennan, Peter Reynolds, Darren McGrory, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Neil Hughes (0-1), Joe Murphy, Éamon Walsh, Tommy McCormack, Rory O’Rourke (1-0), Sean McCartin (0-1), Daryl McFarland, Joe Honeyman, Alan Prior.

Under 16s beat Annaduff

The under 16s played Annaduff in the first League game at home on Friday last. Ballinamore made the best of the strong wind in the first half, leaving the half-time score Ballinamore 3-6 to Annaduff 0-1. The wind died and Annaduff failed to get to grips with the game despite some good runs. The final score was Ballinamore 7-9 Annaduff 0-5.

Minor League –  Draw with Drumkeerin puts Minors in final

Sean O’Heslins and Drumkeerin played a very exciting draw in the final league game on Monday. As it turned out a draw was enough to put us in the final against Mohill. A draw was a fair result to what was a very good game with some excellent scores, the best of them from Brian Beirne who was at his accurate best from long range. Ballinamore had the wind in the first half and while they got great points they were pulled back on two occasions by Drumkeerin goals which came against the run of play. However it could have been worst only for a couple of good saves from Cian McCaffrey in goals. At half time Ballinamore led by 0-13 to 2-5 but would it be enough with the wind behind Drumkeerin for the second half? David McLoughlin got a good point straight away after the restart and Andrew Burns scored a great goal and when John Fanning pointed to put us seven points up, 1-15 to 2-5, it looked good. Drumkeerin got a point and then a goal to put on the pressure. Then Stephen McTague pointed a free and Luke Murphy got a point to put us five up again. From there to the finish it was constant pressure and only for great defending by the backs it could have been all over. Drumkeerin got five points in a row to level it. We had a few chances at the end but it finished 1-17 to 3-11.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Cyril Smith, Anthony Maguire, Caillin McHugh, Jack Cullen, Kevin Banks, Conor Moran, Brian Beirne (0-5), John Fanning (0-1), David McLoughlin (0-2), Andrew Burns (1-0), Dean McGovern (0-1), Luke Murphy (0-3), Stephen McTague (0-5), Mark McGrory. Sub: Eoin McHugh for Cian McCaffrey.

Under 14s lose League Final

Our under 14s were comprehensively beaten by firm favourites Mohill in the Division 1 League final on Sunday last. The game was over at half-time as Mohill led by 4-7 to 0-2. Our lads didn’t give up the fight and scored better in the second half with Peter Reynolds getting two goals and points from Barry McGovern and Cathal McHugh. It ended Mohill 7-12 Sean O’Heslins 2-5. While it was disappointing for the boys it must be remembered that in the corresponding final last year we beat Mohill by 5-13 to 1-7, which shows that strengths vary from year to year.

Foireann: Darren Maxwell, Damien Creaven, James Hamill, Daragh Reynolds, Adam Goldrick, Niall McGovern, Mark O’Reilly, Donal Feely (Capt), Peter Reynolds (2-1), Oisín McCaffrey, Daire Murphy, Cathal McHugh (0-1), Barry McGovern (0-3), Kevin Mullen, Jamie Sweeney. Subs: Christy Maguire, Cillian Dooner, Stephen Flynn, John Conway, Dara Gleeson.

Juniors Lose in Division 3 to St Mary’s.

Our Division three team have been narrow losers in all of their four games to date and their loss by four points to St Mary’s was the biggest margin in those four games. Two of the previous loses were by two points and one by three, so despite suffering defeats they are not that far off any of their opponents. Final score on Sunday was 1-13 to 1-9 to St Mary’s.

Foireann: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Fred Walsh, Kevin Prior, Neil Hughes, Matthew Murphy, Philip Murphy, Éamon Walsh, Adrian Smith, Ryan Gavin, Shane McWeeney, James McWeeney, Anthony McTague, Tommy McCormack, Paul Prior, Brian Beirne. Sub used: Seán McCartin.

Juniors lose Division 5 to St Mary’s

Our Junior B team also lost to St Mary’s on Sunday morning. There wasn’t much in this game either but St Mary’s had the edge all through.

Foireann: Brian Beirne, Alan Prior, Ruairí Sullivan, Enda Quinn, Neil Hughes, Éamon Walsh, Fred Walsh, Ryan Gavin, Kevin Prior, Tommy McCormack, Ciaran Murray, David Earley, Seán McCartin, Joe Honeyman, Daryl McFarland: Subs used: John Fanning, Peter Reynolds, Philip Quinn, Eoin McHugh, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin

Junior games – good turn out

Our two junior teams lost their games on Sunday but it was a success in other ways because the turn out was very good with twenty-seven players available between the two teams. It was great to see players responding on what was a difficult weekend with a crucial minor game on the Monday.  Compliments to all of the players who fielded and there were a number who had indicated they would be unavoidably absent. On a beautiful Sunday morning we can be sure all enjoyed the games and hopefully we will have good turnouts for all of the remaining games.

 Junior Ladies

After four victories in their first four games the Ladies team played Mohill on Sunday and lost 3-12 to 2-05.  Their next game is this Sunday against Manorhamilton in Bee Park, Manorhamilton at 11.30am.  Training this Wednesday at 7pm and Friday, time yet to be confirmed.

Cycle to Sligo – Anyone for a cycle on a tandem?

It is getting closer and closer. Just three weeks to go to our trip to Sligo. We ask all of our cyclists to keep working on the sponsorship and keep training. Anyone care to cycle on a tandem to Sligo? Two tandems available. Let Brid know.

Seniors good win over Gortletteragh

Our seniors had their best win to date when they got the better of Gortletteragh by 1-12 to 2-2 on Sunday last. This game was easily their best performance to date and it came after a dreadful start. Two soft goals to Gortletteragh within the first five minutes put the heart crossways in our supporters. However, the resurrection started straight away and points from Brian Cafferty, a free from Ronan O’Rourke and then a great individual effort by James McWeeney and he finished to the net. James got two more points, one from a free, and at half time it was Gortletteragh 2-2 to 1-4, just a point in it. The second half was the finest played by a Ballinamore senior team in a while. Hard to believe that Gortletteragh never got a score in the second half. James McWeeney pointed a free to level it, Ronan O’Rourke put us ahead with another and then we got five of the most amazing points you would ever see, all in a row. Enough to break any team. Five different players got them: Wayne McKeon, James McWeeney, Shane McWeeney, from a difficult free, Liam Ferguson and Jim McTague. You just couldn’t believe five points could go over from such distances and such angles, but over they flew.  Shane McWeeney pointed another free to leave us clear winners.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin, Johnny McWeeney, David Duignan, Joseph Murphy, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Jim McTague (0-1), Philip Murphy, Wayne McKeon (0-1), Adrian Smith, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Sean Murray, Ronan O’Rourke (0-2), Anthony McTague, Shane Moran, James McWeeney (1-4). Subs: Matthew Murphy for John McWeeney, Shane McWeeney (0-2) for Brian Cafferty, Tommy McCormack for Sean Murray, Brian Beirne for A Smith, Éamon Walsh for R O’Rourke.

Executive meeting and General Club meeting

There will be an Executive meeting of the club in the Clubrooms tomorrow Thursday at 7.30 followed at 9.00pm by a general club meeting open to all members. Full club meetings are only held a few times per year so we would ask all members, players and supporters to attend this meeting as it gives everyone an opportunity to keep up to date with the running of the club.

Minor League – Win over Carrigallen

Our minors overcame Carrigallen on Good Friday evening in the Minor League by 3-14 to 3-8. This keeps us in line for a final place and it will all depend on next Monday’s final game against Drumkeerin in the Park

New York Minor Football – Ballinamore connection

Last Saturday New York minor footballers played Roscommon in the Connacht Minor Championship. The right-half forward on the New York team was Rory Redican, son of Assumpta Reynolds, who hails from Edentenny. It is great to see a new generation of New York-born youngsters playing Gaelic games and great to see Ballinamore and Leitrim natives passing on the Gaelic Games to their sons and daughters.

Just four weeks ago and many of our cyclists can be seen out practicing on the roads. Collecting sponsorship is also in full swing. Yes, the build up is underway and the excitement will culminate on the morning of 22 May when all will assemble at the Church to head out the old railway track past the Golf Club, to Drumshanbo, Keadue, Ballyfarnan and ending up in Markievicz Park in time to see Leitrim face Sligo.

Seniors Draw with Eslin

Last Sunday morning our seniors played Eslin in what was a historic first league encounter between the clubs’ first teams in a very long time, certainly the first in at least 60 years. This was a thrilling game from start to finish that neither would have deserved to lose. We could have won it and we could have lost it. Early on we were streets ahead and got great points from Paul Prior, Ronan O’Rourke, Shane Moran, Anthony McTague, Sean Murray and James McWeeney. Then Seán Murray tore through to score a great goal and we were 1-10 to 0-6 ahead. It looked like we would win well. Then Eslin took over and got equally good points and had the gap down to 1-10 to 0-9 by half-time. Strangely we didn’t get a score in the rest of the half after Seán Murray’s goal, but we didn’t miss much either. In fact we had only one wide in whole the first half. Eslin were on top for a lot of the second half and led by three points at one stage. We were very lucky at this stage when Philip Farrelly brought off a great save when Conor Beirne was straight through. Our lads came back and Paul Prior levelled it from a free. When Wayne McKeon scored a brilliant point to put us ahead and with very little time to go it looked as if we would get a win, but Eslin came back to level. We did miss a few chances in the second half and dropped a few balls in to the goalie but 1-16 apiece was a very high score with great points from both sides. Overall it was as good a game as we saw in the Park in a while and we have won games when we didn’t play half as well.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Johnny McWeeney, David Duignan, Joseph Murphy, Liam Ferguson, Jim McTague, Anthony McTague (0-3), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Adrian Smith, James McWeeney (0-1), Sean Murray (1-2), Ronan O’Rourke (0-2), Paul Prior (0-4), Shane Moran (0-3), Tommy McCormack. Subs: Ryan Gavin for James McWeeney, Philip Murphy for T McCormack.

Junior lose in Division 3

Our Junior A team lost to Allen Gaels by 1-12 to 1-10 on Sunday morning in a game that they could have won. We were down by 0-10 to 0-5 at half time and indeed were seven points behind at one stage. The team fought much better in the second half and when James McWeeney scored a great goal after good work by Anthony McTague we were really in with a chance of our first victory in this division. Unfortunately Allen Gaels got a lucky goal and minutes later James McWeeney made another great run through but was inches wide from close range and those were the deciding factors. Shane McWeeney scored two good late points but we just ran out of time.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin, Freddie Walsh, Kevin Prior, Kevin O’Connor, Éamon Walsh (0-1), Philip Murphy, Matthew Murphy, Paul Prior (0-1), Joe Murphy, Shane McWeeney (0-2), James McWeeney (1-10, Anthony McTague (0-3), John Fanning, Tommy McCormack, Seán McCartin (0-1). Sub: Rory O’Rourke (0-1) for T McCormack.

Scór All Ireland Finals

Our Novelty Act team didn’t get the verdict in Killarney on Saturday but they gave of their best and the act went down as well as any of the other three. The cast were happy that they had performed to their very best but the title went to Carnew Emmets from Wicklow. It was a great night for Leitrim with two wins to bring Leitrim’s total to 23 titles. Congratulations to Aisling Sammon from Aughnasheelin who won the Amhránaíocht and Glencar/Manorhamilton who won the Rince Foirne for the third time. Both were very deserving winners and the Green Room in the Gleneagle was full of Leitrim singers and performers until the early hours of Sunday morning. Once again Ailbhe McGill had this room reserved from early in the evening and it was buzzing with entertainment for hours. It was again a wonderful occasion for Leitrim and of course we had another Ballinamore connection with Tommy Moran as Fear a’ Tí.

Seniors Lose in Shield

In a very close game on Saturday Glencar/Manorhamilton edged us out by 1-12 to 1-11. It was close all through and there was just a point in it at half-time 1-6 to 1-5, with our scores coming from Paul Prior (two), Shane Moran, Seán Murray and Liam Ferguson and Tommy McCormack got the goal. In the second half Brian Cafferty was our best man to get scores, he got three good points with Tommy McCormack, Brian Beirne and Shane Moran getting the others.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin, Joe Murphy, David Duignan, John McWeeney, Anthony McTague, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke, Jim McTague, Adrian Smith, Brian Cafferty (0-3), Sean Murray (0-1), James McWeeney, Paul Prior (0-2), Shane Moran (0-2), Tommy McCormack (1-1), Subs: Brian Beirne (0-1), Shane McWeeney and Éamon Walsh.

Juniors – Great improvement in turnout

Our Juniors lost on Sunday morning to Fenagh but the match was less important than the turnout. After two weekends of walkovers it was great to see a panel of 23 players available. It certainly shows that we have the players and we sincerely hope that we have turned the corner and will a full panel out for the remaining eight games between now and the end of June. Fenagh had much the better of the first half and led by 1-11 to 0-3 at half-time. It seemed a hopeless cause facing an eleven points deficit but amazingly within 15 minutes it was down to three after points from Neil Hughes, Rory O’Rourke, then we got a lucky goal when a Fenagh back deflected the ball into his own net. Rory O’Rourke pointed a free and then Stephen McTague got two glorious points to leave it 1-11 to 1-8. However we ran out of steam after that and Fenagh got four points to our one from Kevin Prior. It ended 1-15 to 1-9.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin, Seamus Donnelly, Freddie Walsh, Cyril Smith, Darren McGrory, Neil Hughes, Éamon Walsh, Kevin Prior (0-1), Stephen McTague (0-1), Mark McGrory, Diarmuid Keegan (0-1), Michael Costello (0-1), Rory O’Rourke (0-2), Adrian Gallogly, Sean McCartin. Subs used: Ruairí Ó Súilleabháin, Philip Quinn, Peter Reynolds, Joe Honeyman, David Earley. Other subs available: Daryl McFarland, Joe Murphy and Tommy McCormack

Sympathy is extended to the Murphy Family on the death of Patsy Murphy who died at the weekend. Patsy spent over 40 years working in New York and returned some years ago to live in Ballinamore. While he was away he never missed the Ballinamore Festival every year. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air . His brother James is one of our great Lotto patrons, and Monday last, the evening of Patsy’s removal, was the first time James missed a Lotto night since it started over 10 years ago.

Junior Players – Let us down again

For the second weekend in a row the club was badly let down by our Junior B players. On Saturday last Michael Quinn had confirmation from about 20 players that they would be travelling to St Osnatts on Sunday morning for the Division 5 game. On Sunday morning six players turned up at the Square. This is an absolute shame and an embarrassment, not to mention the €100 per game fine that we quite properly have incurred. We offer our apologies to St Osnatts who were left without a game on a fine Sunday morning. Where were our players, that is what our hard-working club members would like to know and are entitled to know? The people who are working hard in different aspect of the clubs affairs: those who run our teams, those who sell Lotto tickets, the club officers who spend hours on a daily basis working for the club, those who developed our club facilities, will feel badly demoralised to think that out of a panel of over thirty players only six turned up on a fine Sunday morning. To date 15 games have been played in Division 5 this year and two walk-overs. Both walk-overs conceded by which club? By Sean O’Heslins. The very team that won the Junior C Championship last year, with a panel of over thirty players. It is a disgrace to the proud name of Sean O’Heslins.  The players on this panel who didn’t turn up last Sunday morning and the Saturday before should apologise to their team manager Michael Quinn and they should feel a responsibility to collectively pay the €200 fine that the club has incurred as a result of their non appearance. Players should have that much loyalty at least to the club.

Juniors lose in Division 3

Our Junior A team lost to Gortletteragh on Saturday evening by 0-14 to 1-9.  They had a bad first half and were down by 0-9 to 0-5 at half time. They came back a bit in the second half and when Paul Prior scored a penalty there was only two points in it. However that was as close as we got.

Foireann: Eoin McHugh, Kevin O’Connor, Kevin prior, Gordon Hughes, Anthony McTague, Johnny McWeeney, Éamon Walsh, Adrian smith, Joseph Murphy, Shane McWeeney (0-1), Paul Prior (1-5), Brian Cafferty (0-1), Tommy McCormack, James McWeeney, Shane Murphy (0-2). Subs: Neil Hughes, Stephen McTague, Gavin Brennan, Diarmuid Keegan, Fred Walsh.

Sponsored Cycle to Sligo

Already quite a number of people have confirmed that they will be cycling to Sligo on 22 May, for our sponsored “Cycle to the Match”. Former players like Ollie Honeyman, Patrick “Beezer” McKiernan, Gerry Logan, Damien Crossan, Gary Smith and Colm Reilly as well as current players like Brian Cafferty and Ronan O’Rourke will be cycling. This is an exciting fun event and was enjoyed by all last year when the cycle was to Roscommon. Brid Sullivan is anxious to hear from more people who would be willing to take part in an exciting adventure and also help the club in what is now a major fund-raising event. Brid is hoping to get at least 50 people to cycle. The target is to raise an average of €200 each. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Please ring Brid at 087 9173185.

Under 14 League game on Saturday against Melvin Gaels in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin at 11.00. Leitrim Hurlers play Fermanagh in the Park on Sunday at 2.30

Junior Players – Please turn out

Last Saturday the mentors in charge of our Division 5 team had to face the embarrassment of giving a walk-over to Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher. This was a serious matter because it was the third year running where we conceded to Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher. To make matters worse, Glenfarne/Kilty  had facilitated us by agreeing to a Saturday evening game instead of having to travel to Glenfarne for an 11.00 start on Sunday.  The reality is there are at least 30 players eligible for Junior Division 5, including a number of those now over 17 this year. This grade is seriously important as a starting point into adult football for our minors as well as many players who will not get regular starts in Division 3. Last year we won the Junior C Championship with have a dozen subs available. There are 8 more players eligible for the league. It is imperative that all players respond to Michael Quinn early this week and be available if at all possible. Division 5 is the lifeblood of the GAA, it is about playing football and giving the maximum amount of games to the maximum amount of players. Please do not let the club down again by having to concede any more games.

We would ask all club members and players to think about using a piece of Gaeilge on any occasion possible this week and next. As individuals if you are sending e-mails or text messages to your friends, family etc, why not put in some phrases such as “Dia duit”, “Mise anseo”. Forget about the “Hi” for this week. It means nothing anyway. You could finish with “Slán” or “Go raibh maith agat” or “Beidh mé ag caint leat”.  Maybe team mentors could use a few words before matches. It our language, lets be proud of it, lets use it.

An Luan seo chugainn an oíche dheireanach den Chiorcal Comhrá sa Leabharlann. Beidh amhráin agus ceol ar an oíche sin. Beidh fáilte roimh gach duine.

Bua ag ár bhfoireann Sinsear

Our seniors got a great start to their Gallogly Catering Division 2 campaign with a dramatic last minute win over Kiltubrid on Saturday. For all but the last minute we were behind Kiltubrid but when all seemed lost, David Duignan, who was playing full back, turned up on the edge of the square and as the ball dropped between a couple of Kiltubrid defenders he got possession and finished to the net. David was the outstanding Sean O’Heslins player all day and it was appropriate that he should get the match winner. It was reminiscent of the day when he beat Annaduff with late points to win the Senior B Championship in 2003.  Overall it was a strange performance. We dominated possession for a lot of the game but shot fifteen wides to Kiltubrid’s five. We were behind 0-5 to 0-3 at half time with points coming from Tommy McCormack, Ryan Gavin and Ronan O’Rourke. We had slipped four points behind when Sean Murray was pushed in the square and the goal from the penalty by Paul Prior gave us a lifeline we were not expecting. Tommy McCormack levelled and it was looking good as Kiltubrid also had a player sent off for a second yellow. However, Kiltubrid didn’t give up and got the next two points and it looked to be going Kiltubrid’s way. Then Paul Prior pointed a free and then came David Duignan’s goal well into extra time. We left for home greatly relieved and so, I am sure, did our new management team of Brendan Burns and Seamus Mullen. Bhí an bua againn ar an scór 2-6 in aghaidh 0-10. Our thanks to Miranda Burke from Kiltubrid who gave medical assistance to Ronan O’Rourke after the sustained an injury..

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Philip Murphy, David Duignan (1-0), Liam Ferguson, Joe Murphy, Jim McTague, Ronan O’Rourke (0-1), Wayne McKeon, Ryan Gavin (0-1), Shane Moran, Seán Murray, Shane Murphy, Paul Prior (1-2), Adrian Smith, Tommy McCormack (0-2). Subs: Brian Cafferty for Shane Murphy, Shane Ferguson for Ronan O’Rourke, Brian Beirne for Ryan Gavin.

Scór – Bua arís sa Nuachleas

Sean O’Heslins won the Nuachleas once again at the Co Scór finals in Ballinamore last Saturday. This is the 18th time in all that the club has qualified for the Connacht Finals in Nuachleas. Comhghairdeas to Michael Fanning, Sean McKeon, Seán Ó Suilleabháin, Rowena O’Rourke, Brid Sullivan, Philip McHugh and Raymond McHugh and Cyril Smith who replaced Brendan Brennan who was unavailable on the night. . In the other events: Rince Foirne, Amhranaíocht, Aithriseoireacht and Tráth na gCeist all of our performers were well in with a chance giving great performances. The standard was very high throughout. The Connacht Finals are in Elphin on Saturday starting at 6.00pm. Tá súil againn go mbeidh an club ar an mbóthar go Cill Airne arís.

Ar na Rothair go Sligeach

In ten weeks time Leitrim will be heading for Sligo for the first round of the Connacht Senior Championship. Last year over thirty people headed on their bicycles for Roscommon. It is hoped that all of the same people and, hopefully more, will take the road to Sligo on 22 May. Now is the time to start cycling a bit as the evenings grow longer. The cycle is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year and it is important that as many people as possible join in.

Underage meeting – Coiste na nÓg

Underage committee meeting on Tuesday 15th March at 9pm in the clubhouse. All parents and team mentors boys and girls invited to attend.

GAA Social Initiative

The Ballinamore Sean O’Heslins will be holding an information meeting on this Thursday night in the Clubrooms in relation to the GAA Social Initiative which arose as a result of President Mary McAleese and her husband, Martin, noticing an absence of older men in attendance at official functions during their many visits to local communities over the years. She came to the conclusion that many men, because of the changing patterns of life, were falling through cracks in the system and either risking or already experiencing isolation and loneliness. The President referred to those “who have lost the threads of regular and meaningful social contact and who would welcome the chance to revive their social lives again in ways they would enjoy”. Arising from her concern, the President established a Forum in 2007 consisting of selected older men – leading academics, health and social care professionals, service providers and local and national representatives – to explore the problem. Subsequently, the President invited the GAA to implement some of these ideas arising from the Forum resulting in the ‘GAA Social Initiative’, launched in 2009. The Initiative began with four county-based projects in Mayo, Fermanagh, Kerry and Wexford. These projects co-ordinated, respectively, by Dr Mick Loftus, Tom Boyle, John Pierse and Tony Dempsey provided vital experience and information to develop the concept and, arising from the lessons learned in that first phase, the final form of the Initiative has been agreed. It is now being re-launched as a club-based, island-wide project, utilising the GAA club network as a vehicle to achieve the greatest reach into all our communities. The President’s commitment is clearly illustrated by her willingness to serve as Patron to the Initiative. In addition, Dr Martin McAleese will serve as a Director of the Trust established to implement the Initiative. Any club members or indeed anybody with an interest in the above is invited to a meeting in the clubhouse this Thursday night at 8pm where we will discuss how to support this worthy project.

Record Crowd at AGM

The AGM may have been later than usual but it was a highly successful and positive one with the biggest attendance ever at a Seán O’Heslin’s AGM. About 75 people attended.  It is a long time since we have seen so many trophies on display at an AGM with pride of place going to the Ladies Junior Championship trophy, won for the first time ever, the Boys under 14 Championship won for the first time since 1978 and the Junior C Championship won in dramatic fashion. Financially, it was a welcome relief to see some dent into the enormous debt on the pitch development. It cost about €90,000 to run the club last year and in addition our debt was reduced by about €30,000. Great credit is due to all of our fundraisers and these were all acknowledged in both Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports. The reinstatement of the two main officers: Cathaoirleach and Rúnaí, only a week earlier, also lifted the cloud that was sprung on us by an ill-advised objection to our Féile win last summer.

Officers for 2011

Officers elected for 2011 were: Uachtarán: Hugh McTague Snr. Leas-Uachtaráin: P.J. Dolan, An tAthair S Ó Dubhthaigh, John Harte, George Price, Joe Gormley, Andy Duffy, Paddy Dolan, Sean Kavanagh, Tommy Moran, Gerry Mahon. Cathaoirleach: Peter Reynolds. Leas-Chathaoirleach: Michael Quinn.  Rúnaí: Patsy Connaughton. Rúnaí Cúnta, Alan Banks, Cisteoir: John D’Arcy. Cisteoir Cúnta: Ann Shanley. Registration Day

All players, adult, ladies and underage as well as general club members are advised that there will be a Club registration day on Saturday next. To facilitate the immediate paying of registration, everyone is asked to come to the Park on Saturday next between 5.00 and 7.30pm. If you cannot get there, please ring Tommy Dolan at 087 8171587 and arrange to pay membership

 Club AGM

Our AGM takes place on this Saturday 22 January at 7.00pm in the Clubrooms. A lot has happened over the past year, both on and off the pitch. We ask everyone with an interest in the club, young and old, men and women, involved or on the fringes, don’t miss this meeting.

That’s the name decided on for the comedy group that will hit the stage in Ballinamore Community Centre on Friday11th, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th February. Scór na nÓg

We had no winners at the County Scór na nÓg Finals in Manorhamilton on Sunday last. We were represented in Rince Foirne, Rince Seit, Nuachleas and Trath na gCeist.

Many thanks to all our competitors and to those who prepared our teams. It is interesting to note that this is the first year since 1987 that we came away from a County Scór na nÓg Finals without winning anything. On the otherhand, we had the highest number of entries this year of any Leitrim club, so it wasn’t for lack of participation. Many of our competitors this year were very young and in Scór for the first time.

New Year Draw

Our New Year’s draw was a wonderful success with sales up 20% on last year. This is a huge boost to the club in these difficult financial times for club and country. Prior’s was also packed as usual for the draw and it was really the final event in town for the Christmas season. A small number of people made a really special effort to boost sales and the main sellers again were: P J McLoughlin, Brid Sullivan, Philip Farrelly, and Raymond McHugh. However, one must also thank sincerely the many others who contributed greatly to the sale of tickets. The club is indebted to all of them. The main co-ordinator of the draw was Brid Sullivan, who also put a huge effort into making it a success. Thanks also to everyone who bought a ticket. Míle buíochas also to Gay Prior who sponsored the €1,000 second prize. The level of debt is sometimes daunting and maybe some people do not fully realise the effort that is, and will be, required to clear the debt. However, nights like Sunday last give all great hope.

Christmas visitors

There were a lot of visitors around over the Christmas. Ronan Sharpley was very pleased with his fund-raising functions on the Tuesday when he set to raise funds for projects he is involved in El Salvador. His brother Finnian was also home from Australia. Finnian plays football with the St Finbarr’s club in Perth. Another man who was home was Brendan Wisley. Brendan was in Prior’s at the draw on Sunday night and headed for the airport straight from Prior’s on route to Singapore. Indeed he may well be the first person to read these notes as he usually sees them before anyone in Ireland due to the time difference.
