Under 16 medals presented to Boys in Tyrone

In a very unique event our under 16 boys traveled to Dunamannagh in Tyrone on Saturday last to the Clann na Gael club, the home club of Stephen O’Neill. Stephen met the boys just outside Omagh and brought them to his home club. On their arrival there were refreshments waiting for them. After this the lads were presented with their medals and the “Sam” was on display. They also got a group photo and individual photos with Stephen. They then played a challenge game against Clann na Gael under 16s, playing some great football and winning the game. They then had a coaching session. After this it was back to the Fir Tree Hotel in Strabane for a well-deserved meal. The boys and their mentors would like to thank Club Chairman, Conor Harte and Secretary, Paddy O’Connor and the club Bord na nÓg chairman, Padraig Leyden and the parents for coming to see the boys being presented with their medals. Bhí lá iontach maith ag gach duine.

In addition, Singapore has since been confirmed as the venue for the Vodafone GAA All Stars tour next January. The All Star hurlers of 2004 and 2005 will fly to Asia on Wednesday, January 18th and will return a week later. The highlight of the visit will be an exhibition game between the two selections to be played at the Singapore Polo Grounds on Saturday, January 21st. The visit is being hosted by the local GAA club, the Singapore Gaelic Lions, of which Brendan Wisley from Kiltymooden is the current club secretary. With a multi-national membership, the Club enjoys an excellent profile in Singapore and works closely with other local and Irish Community groups.

Club AGM

The club AGM took place on Sunday last. There were about 45 in attendance and with no changes in officer positions and a fairly successful season just ended there were no fireworks or heated discussions. The outgoing Cathaoirleach went through the year’s activities both on and off the field. The opening of the newly laid pitch was one of the highlights of the season; indeed it is the envy of many clubs. On the pitch, the Seniors reached the quarter final of the championship and nearly made it against Kiltubrid. Their big achievement was to retain senior status. The under 16s did a magnificent double in League and championship. The under 14 hurlers won championship and Féile. The ladies reached three finals and, at the end of the season, Oughteragh Gaels won the under 21 championship. In Scór it was a quiet year at adult level but in Scór na nÓg the figure dancers reached the All Ireland Finals.

Cúrsaí Airgeadais

There were great fundraising efforts throughout the year from the Finance Committee, headed by Tommy Moran and the Lotto sellers organized by Mona Creamer. Major fundraisers were the Park Development Fundraiser, the Christmas Draw, Golf Classic. Race Night and sponsorship. Apart from the development work in progress on the Park, it cost in the region of €70,000 to run the club during the year.

Great Victory for Under 21s

Oughteragh Gaels took the under 21 title in dramatic style on Saturday last. For much of the game, especially the second half it looked like going beyond their reach, but they battled away and stole it in the final three or four minutes.

In the early stages Oughteragh Gaels were doing great. They led by 0-4 to 0-2 and were sailing. Then, as often happens, Drumlea got a snap goal out of the blue and the whole picture changed. At half time it was 1-4 to 0-4for Drumlea. In the early part of the second half, Oughteragh Gaels had the upperhand again and came within one point of Drumlea. Then Drumlea had a dominant spell but hit a lot of wides. With ordinary time already up and Gaels still a point behind, a couple of moments of magic from Anton Arandelovic changed it all. First he hit a great point from the right to level it and then he won a throw in and held the ball until he released it to Cathal Egan. Cathal hit a great point with very little room to maneuver and that was it. It was a sweet victory and made up for a dramatic defeat by Drumlea in the 2002 final when we seemed to have it won but then lost in extra time.

This was a hard earned victory but there were a couple of outstanding displays. Gavin McWeeney kept Oughteragh Gaels in it almost single-handedly. He pointed every free they got when Drumlea were missing from play and placed balls. The man of the match was undoubtedly Liam Ferguson who came to the rescue on many occasions in the second half especially. In the last minutes it was the brilliance of Anton Arandelovic and Cathal Egan who sealed it. Final score Oughteragh Gaels 0-9 Drumlea 1-5. Well done to the team mentors Brian Breen and Brendan Sammon who steered this team to victory.

Foireann: Shane Ferguson (B), Wayne Gilgunn (A), Patrick McLoughlin (B), Brian Murray (A), Fergal McManus (A), Liam Ferguson (B), Naoise Hayden (B), Gavin McWeeney (A) (0-6), Anton Arandelovic (B) (0-2), David Duignan (B), Barry McWeeney (A), Gavin Sammon (A), James McWeeney (B), Ronan Sharpley (B), Cathal Egan (A) (0-1). Sub: Finnian Sharpley (B).

Under 21s in Co Final

Oughteragh Gaels qualified for the under 21 Final by beating Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday last. On a sunny November evening on the excellent Drumshanbo pitch this was a closely fought game and the Gaels just about deserved to win. Early in the first half it looked as if the Ballinamore/Aughnasheelin combination were going to run away with it. Points by Roan Sharpley and James McWeeney opened the scoring before Manor got a goal. However, when Cathal Egan crashed to the net it led to a take over by the Gaels. Three pointed frees from Gavin McWeeney left it 1-5 to 1-1. Then Manor took over and got the next five points without reply to lead by 1-6 to 1-5 at half-time.

Manorhamilton missed a good few chances early in the second half while they were on top. David Duignan, Gavin and Barry McWeeney got points each. Then the Gaels took over with an excellent point from Cathal Egan, followed by two more good ones from Gavin Sammon. An opportunist goal from Gavin Sammon seemed to have been the final nail as it gave Oughteragh Gaels a six-point lead. However Manor got the next three points but that is where it ended, 2-11 to 1-11. Next weekend it is Drumlea in the final and that should be interesting.

Foireann: Richard McManus (A), Wayne Gilgunn (A), Patrick McLoughlin (B), Brian Murray (A), Fergal McManus (A), Liam Ferguson (B), Naoise Hayden (B), Gavin McWeeney (A) (0-4), Anton Arandelovic (B), David Duignan (B) (0-1), Barry McWeeney (A) (0-1), Gavin Sammon (A) (1-2), James McWeeney (B) (0-1), Ronan Sharpley (B) (0-1), Cathal Egan (A) (1-1).

Ladies Football

Our Minor Girls played St.Josephs in the county final in Fenagh on Sunday last. This was a tough encounter for the girls who never really got going in the game. Despite their never-say-die attitude, they left themselves with too much to do in the second half, but fought bravely to the end. They can now look forward to a well-deserved break for a while. The team & subs were: Carol O’Connor, Roweena O’Rourke (capt), Clare Fanning, Kate McTague, Orla McWeeney, Deborah Gillheaney, Lauren McGrory, Katie Duignan, Catherine Smith, Erin Gillheaney, Aisling Duignan, Caroline McGrory, Emma Reynolds, Aisling Maxwell. We would like to thank everyone who helped or supported us all year especially to Veronica Smith & Aisling Flaherty who put in a massive effort. Seniors Lose in Final Game of the Year.

Tá Deireadh na bliana tagtha. Our final league game, which was effectively a battle for promotion, took place in Aughawillan on Saturday. It was a tough close game that resembled well the traditional Ballinamore-Aughawillan encounters of the 80s and 90s. with Aughawillan shading it on this occasion. We got a great boost very early on. A lucky break in the square was finished to the net by Paul Prior. However, if it was a lucky one it only compensated for a lot of missed chances in the second half. We got two other points in the first half from Liam Ferguson and Finnian Sharpley. At half time Aughawillan led by 0-8 to 1-2, which was a fair indication of the run of play.

We had the wind in the second half and a strong wind it was too. We dominated possession for the entire second half but just could not get scores. Our two second half points came from frees by Anton Arandelovic and Paul Prior but twice as many frees were missed and although we got within one point at one stage, Aughawillan got the final two to put it beyond our reach. Even in the last minute Thomas McLoughlin made a great attempt at goal but it went narrowly wide. It finished 0-10 to 1-4. There is no doubt about it we tried hard and it wasn’t from want of effort that we failed.

However, it could all be for luck. Next spring we will be in division two of the league but in senior championship. It seems a long way off but it will come. It has been a good year overall and our thanks to Séamus McKeon, Alan Banks and Paddy Prior and all of the panel who put a great effort into it.

Foireann: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Patrick McLoughlin, Joe Honeyman, David Duignan, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Johnny McWeeney, Anton Arandelovic, Thomas McLoughlin, Anthony McTague, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Finnian Sharpley (0-1), Paul Prior (1-2), Sean Murray. Sub; Ronan Sharpley.

Ladies Football

Sean O’Heslins under 12 girls took home their first ever title by winning the
shield final beating Augnasheelin. Our girls went out and gave an outstanding display of football in what turned out to be a very wet and winding Saturday morning in Augnasheelin, but they didn’t seem to mind as they got off to a flying start, with some great scores from our two forwards Megan O’ Connor and Dawn Flynn which was followed by some great score taking from our two midfielders Ciara and Laura O’ Dowd. We had great defending in the back line from Niamh Donnelly and Ciara McTague, we also had some great saves from Louise Farry in goals.

The girls played their best football to-date and it was great to watch
the girls play with great team spirit. The second half turned out to be
very entertaining football from both sides with Augnasheelin getting more
into the game and getting some great scores. But our girls held on well
and were just that bit stronger. We then made some changes by putting our
sub’s on in the last remaining minutes of the game. Our sub’s were Niamh
Flynn, Aoibheann Flynn, Aoibheann Boyle, Aoibheann Curran and Phillippa
O’Reilly, they also played great football and had some great scores. We
also had some players missing on the day and they were Caroline Bourke,
Rachel Gilheaney and Laura Creaven. The game ended Augnasheelin 4:8 Sean O’Heslins 10:12. The girls then headed back to town with their captain
Ciara O Dowd to celebrate their victory. The team panel on the day were
Louise Farry, Niamh Donnelly, Ciara McTague, Ciara O’ Dowd (Capt) Laura O’ Dowd, Megan O’ Connor, Dawn Flynn, Niamh Flynn, Aoibheann Flynn, Aoibheann Curran, Aoibheann Boyle, Phillippa O’Reilly.

That was the last game of the season for our under 12 girls and we hope to see you all back next year for under 12 and under 14. Thanks to all the girls for turning out to training through the season and to their parents for encouraging them throughout
the season also. Thanks to all the parents for driving to some of the away games.

Our Minor Girls play St.Josephs in the county final on Sunday at 11.45am in Fenagh. Your support would be appreciated.

Gaelic Telecom

Gerry McLoughlin came to last Friday’s well-attended club meeting to talk about the benefits of joining Gaelic Telecom. By all accounts a lot of people are changing their phone bill for private houses and for business premises to Gaelic Telecom, for two reasons. Firstly it is cheaper and secondly your nominated GAA club gets 15% of what you pay. The Sean O’Heslins club are anxious to see as many people as possible joining because it will be a significant fundraiser for the club in the coming year. If you want to join ring 1890 929 422.

It is part of the GAA Rules to support Irish industry but it is seldom we hear people talking now about “Buy Irish”.  It has come to our notice recently that few people in Ballinamore seem to realize that of all the varieties of toothpaste on the shelves, there is only one that is Irish-made and that is the “Fiacla” brand. For that reason you would expect that people would buy nothing else but Fiacla. However, it seems one outlet in Ballinamore stopped stocking it because it wasn’t being sold. It is back on the shelves now and we would urge everybody to but Irish in this case. The price and quality is the same. So next time you are in the supermarket look for Fiacla

Seniors Good Win

Our seniors kept up their quest for league promotion with a hard-earned win over Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday last. In the first half we got points from Anton Arandelovic, Seán Murray, two from Finnian Sharpley and the best score of the half was a pointed free from the sideline by Paul Prior. It was level at half-time, 0-5 to us and 1-2 to Manorhamilton. We played great football in the second half that was matched all the way by the North Leitrim boys. Paul Prior pointed two good frees and it was level with minutes to go at 0-7 to 1-4. Then Naoise Hayden got a wonderful point from the end line, which gave us the lead. In the last minute Anthony McTague managed to get it over the bar when he didn’t seem to have much of a chance to give us a lead of two and that was the way it ended, 0-9 to 1-4. A win we deserved on the run of play and one that keeps us in the running for promotion.

Foireann agus scóir: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Liam Ferguson, Joe Honeyman, David Duignan, Naoise Hayden (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, Johnny McWeeney, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Anthony McTague (0-1), Ronan Sharpley, Brian Cafferty, Seán Murray (0-1), Paul Prior (0-3), Finnian Sharpley (0-2). Subs: Patrick McLoughlin.

Ladies Juniors lose in Junior B League Final

On Saturday last Sean O’Heslins played Glencar/Manorhamilton in the Junior B League Final in Kiltubrid. Once again Manor proved too strong for the O’Heslins girls. It was the first half performance by the Manorhamilton girls that proved too much for Ballinamore, although the girls came out with a much better second-half performance and never gave up until the final whistle. This was the last junior game for the girls this year but they can look back with pride on reaching the league and championship finals. We would like to thank them for the effort they put in at training and on the field of play.

Foireann: Carol O’Connor, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Rowena O’Rourke, Kirby Gilgunn, Caroline McGrory, Michelle Fanning, Orla McWeeney, Deborah Gilheaney, Carmel McCartin, Erin Gilheany, Kate McTague, Catherine Smith. Gaeil an Chontae Just fail

It looked unusual on the scoreboard in Páirc Seán on Saturday and novel it surely was, a team drawn from Ballinamore, Manorhamilton and the Gortletteragh/Mohill and Bornacoola  areas; called Gaeil an Chontae, facing St Mary’s in the County Senior Hurling Final. It certainly produced a much-improved county final but the result was the same, a seventh victory on the trot for St Mary’s. Gaeil an Chontae had the better of the opening few minutes but could only get one point. St Mary’s got on top and a lucky goal gave them a flattering 1-6 to 0-2 lead at the interval.

Na Gaeil had the better of much of the second half. Points from the two marksmen: Gary Hickey and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and then a great goal from Phily McGuinness brought Na Gaeil within three points. Then a strange thing happened. Dominic Kelly got what appeared to be a point from the right wing. The umpire on that wing waved it wide. Players protested and the umpire on the right signaled a point. Then he consulted the first umpire and they seemed to agree it was over. However the referee never went in to consult but instead booked a Gaeil player for protesting. Almost from the puck out St Mary’s got a goal from a goalmouth scramble and that was the end of it. The experiment worked in that it gave a very competitive county final. The result shows St Mary’s great superiority at the moment and the reason why we will probably see more of Gaeil an Chontae, for another year at least. It finished St Mary’s 2-10, Gaeil an Chontae 1-8.

Foireann: (“B” for Ballinamore, “M” for Manorhamilton, “G” for former Gortletteragh club). Bás Pat Mallon

One of the town’s best-loved characters, Pat Mallon, was buried last Friday. Pat, who came from Dublin sixty-six years ago to work and live in D’Arcy’s, High St, was known by all and sundry in Ballinamore and surrounds. Pat was passionately interested in football, in the fortunes of his native Dublin, Sean O’Heslins and Leitrim. In the early 1940s when the Ballinamore club was suspended, a parish league kept activity going and Pat played for the town team. In later years Pat Mallon was a Vice President of the club and club members participated in the guard of honour at his removal. Pat was a deeply religious man and great tributes were paid to him at his funeral mass by Fr Heery and by Gay D’Arcy. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air.

Seniors Big Win Over Drumkeerin

Our seniors had an easy win over Drumkeerin on Sunday. We had the game sewn up by half-time and nothing went right for Drumkeerin in the second half. However it has to be said this was a devastating performance by O’Heslins. Hurt by the defeat by Mohill the previous week, there was going to be no slippage this time. There were some very well-worked scores, particularly significant early on when the eventual outcome was still wide open. Leading by 1-9 to 0-3 at half-time, it ended 6-14 to 0-6.

Foireann agus scóir: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Johnny McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, David Duignan, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Liam Ferguson, Thomas McLoughlin (1-0), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Anthony McTague (1-2), Paul McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty, Seán Murray (0-2), Paul Prior (2-4), Finnian Sharpley (1-4). Three titles in a week

Under 16 Footballers Win Championship

Friday was a famous evening for the club when the under 16 footballers took the under 16 championship title for the second year in a row and also completed the League and Championship double for 2005. It was one-way traffic for most of the first half with Wayne McKeon and Shane Murphy in great scoring form. Wayne got five points, Shane got three and Jim McTague got one. At half time we led by 0-9 to 0-1. Carrigallen were coming more into the game before half time and the second
half had a surprise in store for us. Carrigallen got four points in succession and it was down to just four between us. At this stage Philip Farrelly brought off a great save and Carrigallen ran out of steam after that. Jim McTague got a point to start us off and then the “Wayne and Shane Show” started again. The points flowed, Wayne got three, Shane got two, Jim McTague got his second of the half and Shane Moran also got his name on the score sheet. Although Carrigallen got a late goal it was all long over by then and it finished 0-17 to 1-5.

In reality, O’Heslins won this championship when they beat St Mary’s a week earlier. Carrigallen tried their best but were no match for what is a wonderful team of footballers, the best this club has seen at this level for quarter of a century, yes since 1980. True, they won the championship last year, but there was an element of luck on that occasion. There was no need for luck this year, they are the best team in the county and they have some of the best footballers the club has seen in a long while. Congratulations to the whole panel and to Managers: Padraig McKeon, Sean Reynolds and Ronan O’Rourke. The trophy was presented to the winning captain, Wayne McKeon by Bord na nÓg Leas-Chathaoirleach, Dan Gallogly after the game. There then followed the traditional tour of the town and a feed for the deserving team and mentors.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Paul Darcy, David Leyden, Matthew Murphy, Neil Hughes, Michael Costello, Enda Quinn, Wayne McKeon (0-8), Jim McTague (0-3), John Christie, Shane Murphy (0-5), Darren Reynolds, Shane McWeeney, Stephen Beirne, Shane Moran (0-1). Subs used: Ian Flynn and Keith McKiernan. Other subs: Éamon Walsh, Séamus Donnelly, Conor McTague, James Boyle, Barry Flynn, Mark Sweeney, Stephen Rymer Thompson.

Videos of the Game

The game was videod with commentary and videos (or DVDs) of the game can be ordered from Padraig McKeon at 9645093. Please order copies by this weekend so that they can be ordered in block. It is wonderful to have a record of theses games to look at in the long winter nights and recall a famous Ballinamore victory.

Senior Footballers Lose to Mohill

Our senior footballers lost their first outing in the second tier of the league on Sunday. It was a close game all through and it was only in the last five minutes that Mohill pulled away. An early goal from Rory O’Rourke and  points from Seán Murray and Anton Arandelovic meant we were up four points at one stage. However, Mohill got a goal and two points without reply from us and they led by 1-3 t 1-2 at half-time. We were unlucky in that three shots hit the upright in the first half and were cleared. In a low scoring second half we missed a good few chances and relied entirely on Finnian Sharpley who scored our three second half points. Mohill got five and won by 1-8 to 1-5.

Foireann: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Johnny McWeeney, Joe Honeyman, Liam Ferguson, Anton Arandelovic(0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Paul McLoughlin, Rory O’Rourke (1-0), Ronan Sharpley, Sean Murray (0-1), Paul Prior, Finnian Sharpley (0-3). Subs: Brian Cafferty, Anthony McTague.

Hurlers Lose B Final

Our hurlers lost the B Final to  Manorhamilton on Saturday. We were a bit under strength and never really got going. In the first half we held our own and an Adrian Gallogly goal brought us back into the game. At half time Manorhamilton led by 1-6 to 1-2. We were back to within three points of Manorhamilton but when they got another goal we were unable to get back into it. It finished 3-8 to 1-5.

Foireann: Conor Harte, Mark Egan, Cathal McCrann, Ciaran Maxwell, Mike Horgan, Kevin O’Connor, David McGovern, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-3), Thomas McLoughlin, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (0-1), Adrian Smith, Ronan Sharpley, Trevor Martin (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (1-0), Éamon Moran. Subs: James McWeeney, Sean McCartin.

Senior Hurling Final

The senior Championship final is on Saturday next and this time it is an amalgamation of Ballinamore, Manorhamilton and players from the Gortletteragh area against St Mary’s. This combination will be known as Gaeil an Chontae. After suffering bad defeats to St Mary’s over the past few years it was agreed that instead of the B winners taking on St Mary’s, it would be a combined team. This should certainly ensure a competitive Co Final.

Under 14 Hurlers win Co Championship.

Our under 14 hurlers won the championship for the first time since 1999 when they comprehensively beat Mohill on Tuesday last. From the word go we were totally in control and by half-time were leading by 2-4 to 0-0. We dominated similarly in the second half and ran out easy winners. In the first half goals from Éamon Walsh and Dean Creaven and points from Morgan Quinn and Paddy McManus put us ahead. The second half started with a Dean Creaven goal. Morgan Quinn got a couple more points. Joe McGirl, Shane Moran and Sean McWeeney got goals and there were points also from Shane McWeeney and Keith Boyle. This is undoubtedly the best under 14 team we have had for a long time with a lot of fine hurlers. Morgan Quinn and Sean McWeeney, in particular, are two of the most skilled under 14s we have seen in a while. The trophy was presented to the Captain, Morgan Quinn, by Mickie Dorrigan after the match.

Foireann: Joe Earley, Barry Flynn, Sean McWeeney (1-1), Shane Moran (1-0), James Gallagher, Matthew Murphy, Kevin Quinn, Morgan Quinn (0-6), Paddy McManus (0-1), Séamus Donnelly, Keith Boyle (0-1), Éamon Walsh (1-0), Colm McGirl (1-0), Shane McWeeney (0-1), Dean Creaven (2-0). Subs: Devon Quinn, Finbar Quinn, Sean Fox, Conal McManus, Mark McGrory.

INTO Mini Sevens

Ballinamore Boys NS won the INTO mini sevens when they beat Leitrim NS by 2-4 to 1-5 on Friday last. This was a very hard-fought game with the goalkeeper, Kevin Banks and the two defenders Cyril Smith and Jack Cullen being outstanding. Stephen McTague and Mark McGrory got great scores although both were recovering from injury. David O’Connell and David McLoughlin were also in great form. This was Ballinamore’s second year in a row to win this competition. The trophy was presented to the winning captain, Stephen McTague after the game by Séamus Tiernan on behalf of Cumann na mBunscoileanna.

Foireann agus ionadaí: Kevin Banks, Cyril Smith, Jack Cullen, Stephen McTague (Capt) (0-3), David O’Connell, Mark McGrory (1-1), David McLoughlin. Subs: Andrew Burns, Cian Reynolds, Colm O’Reilly (1-0)

Ballinamore – Mayo connections in Football and Hurling

Forty years ago a Ballinamore man played in the Mayo County Final. This year’s Mayo finals programme recalled the 1965 Mayo senior Final where Claremorris had a comprehensive win over Castlebar. Ballinamore man, Dermot Gannon, playing for Castlebar, according to the programme, posed the only serious threat in the Castlebar forwards. Also playing for Castlebar were Paddy Dolan, Aughnasheelin and Frank Reynolds, Aughavas. Another connection with this year’s Mayo Finals was that former Sean O’Heslin’s player, Martin McDermott, was part of the Ballyhanus management team which retained the Mayo senior hurling title at the weekend

Under 16s Footballers in Co Final

Our under 16s are still on course for the double, having qualified for the Co Final. On Friday last the beat St Mary’s in a thriller by 1-10 to 1-5. This was the crucial game of the championship, and it was no easy game with St Mary’s keen to avenge their league Final defeat. St Mary’s had already lost to Carrigallen so we needed a draw at least to ensure a final place. St Mary’s led at half-time by 1-3 to 0-5 but we had missed a number of good chances and at least two goal chances. However, it certainly put it up to our lads to be down by a point and facing into the wind. Wayne McKeon had got three of our first half points, the last one being exceptional, from forty yards out on the sideline. John Christie and Shane Murphy got the other points. Our second half performance was excellent. Shane Murphy got three great points, Wayne McKeon pointed a free, but the score that really clinched it was a brilliant goal from Wayne McKeon with only five minutes left. John Christie got another point to leave it comfortable. There were some outstanding displays from David Leyden, Matthew Murphy and Michael Costello in defence, Wayne McKeon and Jim McTague in midfield and Shane Murphy in attack.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Leyden, Niall Hughes, Paul Darcy, Michael Costello, Enda Quinn, Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon (1-4), John Christie (0-2), Shane Murphy (0-4), Darren Reynolds, Shane Moran, Stephen Beirne, Shane McWeeney. Sub: Ian Flynn,

On Monday the under 16s lost to Carrigallen. However, both teams are now in the final and this may be played this Saturday.

Under 14 Hurlers in Final

The under 14s beat Manorhamilton by 3-1 to 0-1 to qualify for the Co Final which is on Tuesday of this week. In a well-contested game with lots of hurling skill, they just got the better of Manorhamilton. Manorhamilton dominated until Sean McWeeney moved to full back and then in a ten-minute spell at the end of the first half they got the crucial scores, goals from Dean Creaven, Colm McGirl and Éamon Walsh. The second half was very close with just a point to each side, ours coming from Paddy McManus.

Foireann: Joe Earley, Barry Flynn, Paddy McManus, Shane Moran, Kevin Quinn, Matthew Murphy, James Gallagher, Morgan Quinn, Shane McWeeney, Séamus Donnelly, Keith Boyle, Éamon Walsh, Colm McGirl, Sean McWeeney, Dean Creaven.

No 23 Jersey Missing

Has anyone the No 23 jersey from the new, navy, hurling set of jerseys? It could be missing from any of the senior, junior or intermediate games, or indeed underage.

Ballinamore Footballer Plays for Jamaica.

On Saturday last Kingston Gaels from Jamaica played Cayman Gaels from the Cayman Islands in what you probably could call the Caribbean County Final. Last week Des Cahill talked on RTE radio to Ballinamore’s Dermot Cribben about this game. Dermot, who played underage football with Sean O’Heslins, was playing with Kingston Gaels on Saturday. The game was played in the Cayman Rugby Club grounds and drew an attendance of 150 people. The game ended in a draw and the replay will be in Kingston, Jamaica.

The team trains every Tuesday and line out in the Jamaican colours, black, green and gold. They had of course to fly to the Cayman Islands, which is a 45-minute flight away. Just imagine having to travel to London to your nearest club game. That is what it is all about. Another Leitrim man lining out for Kingston Gaels was Padraig McBride from Manorhamilton.

It is indeed a delight to hear of Gaelic football being played in these far away places. Great also to see Leitrim men bringing this great game with them and not forgetting their Irishness. Comhghairdeas libh.

O’Heslins man in Asian Gaelic Games in Shanghai

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, and this is truly an international Gaelic weekend with Ballinamore connections. While Dermot Cribben from Main St Ballinamore was playing Gaelic Football for Kingston Gaels in Jamaica, Brendan Wisley from Kiltymooden, Ballinamore was playing for Singapore in the Asian Gaelic Games in Shanghai in China. The tenth Asian Gaelic Games Sevens Tournament took place last weekend in Shanghai. About 34 team, men’s and ladies, and 400 players took part, with teams from Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo and many other places. The parade at the finals on Sunday were led by a band form the People’s Liberation Army, who played the Irish and Chinese National Anthems.

There were in fact two Ballinamore connections at the games last weekend. Gareth O’Brien, from Cavan, a nephew of Mae McDevitt, High Street and Brendan Wisley Jnr, of Kiltymooden, the current secretary of the Singapore Gaelic Club, a post incidentally he took over for Gareth, participated in the Games, in Shanghai.  Brendan Wisley Church Supplies is an official sponsor of the Singapore Lions Club.

Brendan tells me that for the hurling final over 50 turned up at one of the club members house in the wee hours of Monday Morning to watch the game on a computer screen with the sound of RTE, radio again via the net in the background. Brendan informs me that, he has had many a good crowd, listen to the radio, and watch the games, in his own house, via broadband during the summer.

For the people who coached many a schools and underage team in Ballinamore it is a thrill to hear of Ballinamore men being involved in developing Gaelic games across the globe. Well done to Dermot and Brendan, Ballinamore men in two distant lands.

Scealta na Seachtaine – 19 Mean Fomhair 2005

Senior Hurling

Senior Hurling is around the corner, with a game likely on the weekend after next. There is a new development in senior hurling this year. Sean O’Heslins will play Manorhamilton in the senior B competition first, as in the past couple of seasons. The situation with the Senior Championship proper is that St Mary’s will play an amalgamation of the other two clubs plus whatever players are available from the former Gortletteragh area. This is welcome news as our experience of the past couple of years was that a big gap had emerged between St Mary’s and the others. It should lead to a competitive final.

Intermediates Lose Championship Status

Our intermediates lost heavily to St Mary’s in the second of our relegation games. This means our second team will be in Junior A Championship next year. In fairness it is probably our level as next year’s Intermediate grade will include seven teams relegated from senior this year, plus Aughnasheelin, Dromahair and three very strong second-string teams from St Mary’s, Allen Gaels and Glencar/Manorhamilton. It would be “in aghaidh na gaoithe” all the time in that company.

Although well beaten on Sunday by St Mary’s we started very well and missed three goal chances before St Mary’s settled down. It was a false dawn as the stronger team pulled away by half time.

Foireann: Conor Harte, Francis Dolan, Gavin Brennan, Joseph Murphy, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Naoise Hayden, Joe McTague, Adrian Smith, Jason Kellett, Alan Prior, Paul Prior, James McWeeney, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Adrian Gallogly, Peter Dolan.

Under 16 Girls

The Sean O’Heslins under 16 girls finished their championship last Tuesday week in Ballinaglera. The under 16 girls played 6 games, losing two. Unfortunately this was not enough to get them into the final but nevertheless it was a good performance by the girls. We would like to thank the girls for all their efforts over the year.

Foireann: The team in Ballinaglera was: Carol O’Connor, Claire Fanning, Kirby Gilgunn (capt), Erin Gilheany, Catherine Smith, Rowena O’Rourke, Kate McTague, Deborah Gilheany, Lauren McGrory, Emma Reynolds, Katie Duignan, Aisling Maxwell, Aisling Duignan, Maeve Murphy, Caroline McGrory.

Junior Ladies

Sean O’Heslins junior girls were invited to the Connacht 7s in Barna last weekend. The girls played two games against Miltown from Galway and Geevagh from Sligo. Both teams proved two strong for the girls but nevertheless they tried their best. Miltown went on to win the cup and Geevagh the Shield. All teams went to a banquet in the Clybaun Hotel on Saturday night and a disco was arranged for them after that. The girls had an enjoyable weekend and would like to thank all who came down to support them and especially the Seán O’Heslins club who gave them the opportunity to go.

Efficient Ladies PRO

Now that ladies football is winding down I would like to thank Emma Reynolds who has been the unofficial PRO for the ladies games and has provided details of teams etc. Míle buíochas also to team manager Seán Reynolds for his input also.

Under 16 Boys Football

The under 16 boys played their second game of the championship against Melvin Gaels in Kinlough on Friday last. On what was a fine evening for playing football, our lads proved too strong and led by 1-10 to 0-4 at half time. The continued from where they left off in the second half and won by 1-18 to 0-10.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, David Leyden, Paul Darcy, Matthew Murphy, Niall Hughes (0-1), Michael Costello, Enda Quinn, Jim McTague (0-2), Wayne McKeon (1-7), John Christy (1-3), Shane Murphy (0-3), Darren Reynolds (0-1), Stephen Beirne, Shane Moran, Shane McWeeney (0-1). Subs: Ian Flynn, Barry Flynn, Éamon Walsh, Conor McTague.

Next game is against St Mary’s on Friday in the Park at 6.30.

Good Wishes

Best wishes to Tommy Dolan who has undergone surgery lately.

Comhghairdeas Cill Tiobraid

Congratulation to Kiltubrid on their first ever senior title and they have now become the eighteenth club in Leitrim to have won a senior title. Yes, 18 out of Leitrim’s 24 clubs have won a senior championship and bear in mind that two of those twenty-four are very new clubs. Gorvagh of course also won the senior championship but they are no longer in existence. Of course Gorvagh hold a record of their own having won four-in-a-row. Kiltubrid were the only club in south Leitrim, apart from Leitrim Gaels, who had not won a senior title up to now. One other remarkable thing is that no less than thirteen different clubs have contested the Leitrim senior Football Final over the last thirteen years. That is a welcome change from the 1980s when three clubs nearly dominated the scene completely. Commiserations to Bornacoola who did not do themselves justice in the end. Beidh siad ar ais arís.

Comhbhrón

The club would like to express its sympathy to one of our great Lotto supporters, Kitty Cafferty, on the death of her sister Mrs. Mary Walsh.

We played Aughnasheelin on Saturday in the first of two play-off games to decide on who is relegated to Junior next year. We lost by 3-11 to 2-7 but it wasn’t a bad performance seeing as the same Aughnasheelin team drew with our seniors a few weeks ago. Aughnasheelin got goals at crucial stages and were considerably the better team throughout. In the first half pointed frees from Paul Prior, points from Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and James McWeeney and a goal before half-time from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin left it Aughnasheelin 2-8 to our 1-4 at the break. The second half was even score-wise with our scores coming from Alan prior with two points, a goal from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and a pointed free from Paul Prior. However we were not able to make inroads into the first half deficit.

Foireann: Conor Harte, Francis Dolan, Gavin Brennan, Freddie Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Naoise Hayden, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-1), Adrian Smith Ray Logan, Alan Prior (0-2), Paul Prior (0-3), Philip Murphy, Seán McCartin, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (2-0), James McWeeney (0-1). Subs: Peter Reynolds, Anthony Curran, Peter Dolan.

Ladies Beaten In Junior B Final Championship Final

On Saturday last Sean O’Heslins junior ladies played Glencar/Manor in the junior B Final in Drumkeerin on a lovely evening for playing football. Unfortunately the Glencar/Manor girls proved too strong for Ballinamore. The Manor girls got off to a flying start and were well ahead by half-time. The Sean O’Heslins girls, to their credit, never gave up and kept battling right to the end. This is a very young team and their day will surely come. It was a big achievement to reach the final for a club that only started out in 2003. The girls would like to thank all who came out to support them on the day; it was great to see such a good crowd. The best of luck also to Manorhamilton in junior A next year.

Foireann: Carol O’Connor, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Áine Martin, Rowena O’Rourke, Kirby Gilgunn, Michelle Fanning, Orla McWeeney (Capt.), Deborah Gilheaney, Carmel McCartin, Erin Gilheany, Kate McTague, Catherine Smith. Subs: Emma Reynolds, Aisling Maxwell, Caroline McGrory, Katie Duignan, Aisling Duignan, Áine McWeeney, Maeve Murphy

Under 16 Footballers Win First Round

The under 16 boys played the first round of the championship on Monday last in Ballinamore against Manorhamilton. On a beautiful evening the Ballinamore boys got off to a winning start mainly due to a great first half performance. They led by 2-7 to 0-4 at half time. In the second half it was much the same with Ballinamore pushing home their advantage. Team and scorers. Philip Farrelly, David Leyden, Matthew Murphy, Paul Darcy, Neil Hughes, Michael Costello, Enda Quinn, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Jim McTague, Darren Reynolds (0-4), Shane Murphy (1-5), John Christie (0-1), Shane McWeeney, Stephen Beirne (0-1), Shane Moran (0-1), Subs: Stephen Rymer Thomson (1-0), Éamon Walsh, Séamus Donnelly, Keith McKiernan, James Boyle, Barry Flynn, Conor McTague, Mark Sweeney. Good wishes to Ann Shanley’s father, Tom, who has been hospitalised of late.

Scór

We wont find until Scór is upon us and the club is hoping to enter Scór with renewed vigour this year. Seán O’Heslins is known throughout the country for their Scór efforts and it is vital that the club is organized to maintain the club’s position at county and national level in terms of participation especially and success if that comes. The club is hoping to get a group of people together with an interest in Scór as for some years the burden of effort has fallen on one person, the Scór coordinator. Anyone willing to help is asked to contact Seán O Suilleabháin.

Comhbhrón

The club wishes to express its sympathy to the Prior Family High St on the death of Mrs. Rita Prior. Also to the McKeon family on the death of Mrs. Maureen McKeon and the McGirl Family on the death of Hugh Walsh. The legendary Seán Purcell who died recently was a frequent visitor to Ballinamore as his son is married to Síle Feeney, Aghadark. Sympathy to his family also. Go ndéana Dia trócaire orthu uile.

Kiltubrid v Bornacoola Final

The pairing for the Co Final certainly adds to our sense of achievement this year as we drew with both of them in the course of the championship. It certainly is a unique final with Kiltubrid going for their first ever senior title. The one and only time Kiltubrid contested a senior final was in 1935 and they lost to Ballinamore. That was one of the finals with no details whatever recorded in the local papers. We do not know the teams, the venue nor even the score. Bornacoola have won four titles and their last was in 1957. Good luck to them both.

Scealta na Seachtaine – 29 Lunasa 2005

Defeat in Senior Quarter Final

Our senior championship run came to an end in Cloone on Sunday when Kiltubrid ran out winners by 2-11 to 1-3. This was a performance out of line with all of the thirteen games we played in League and Championship so far this year. For whatever reason the team did not do themselves justice and certainly the drawn game a week earlier would go to prove that. It is probably worth reminding this young team of ours that a highly rated Ballinamore senior team played Gortletteragh in the Senior Championship Final in 1985 and it ended in a draw. A week later the replay took place in Cloone and Gortletteragh beat us off the field by 1-13 to 0-4. We were mortified. A year later the same Ballinamore team won the Senior Championship. There are maverick displays from even the best of teams that cannot be accounted for, and Saturday’s was one of them.

Overall, one big achievement has been to retain senior status for 2006 and there will be a good few clubs envying us next summer. There is still a league to be finished and that must be worked on now. The best of luck to Kiltubrid for the rest of the Championship, they deserved their win and it would be great to see a new name inscribed on the Fenagh Cup. Given their performance last Saturday that is well within their grasp. Team and scorers on Sunday were: Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Johnny McWeeney (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic, Paul McLoughlin (1-0), Ciaran Murray, Anthony McTague, Ronan Sharpley, Paul Prior, Finnian Sharpley (0-2).

Juniors Lose to Drumreilly

The juniors played Drumreilly on Sunday morning and were beaten by 0-11 to 0-8. It was looking good at half time when we led by 0-6 to 0-5 and were playing the better football. Points came from Adrian Murphy, Paul Prior, Aidan Galligan, Sean McCartin, and two from Peter Dolan. However we never got going in the second half and apart from two good points from Shane Harte, the cupboard was bare. On the otherhand Drumreilly got six points and although we kept up the pressure we just could not get the scores. Still it was great to see a good panel of players out, and we were unavoidably short a couple from the last day but these were replaced by a few willing and able replacements. Good wishes to Mickey Quinn who got injured during the game. Final score 0-11 to 0-8 for Drumreilly.

Foireann:  Padraig McKeon, John Galligan, Michael Quinn, Joseph Murphy, Philip Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, Anthony Curran, Aidan Galligan (0-1), Peter Dolan (0-2), Alan Prior, Paul Prior (0-1), David Earley, Shane Harte (0-2), Adrian Murphy (0-1), Sean McCartin (0-1). Subs: Tommy McCormack, Trevor Martin, Daryl McFarland.

Those who are interested in getting the premium tickets for the hurling final please contact Seán O Suilleabháin by Thursday of next week. The procedure is the same as for the football tickets. Young Footballer in Croke Park

We understand Mark McGrory was playing with the mini-sevens in Croke Park on Sunday. It is a wonderful occasion for a young lad to play in the great stadium. Imagine being able to say you played in Croke Park on the same day as the legendary Colin Cooper. In fifty years time that will be a story worth telling in Ballinamore. I’m sure young Mark enjoyed the occasion and it is something he thoroughly deserved, as he is one of the finest young footballers around.

Seniors Draw with Kiltubrid

Our seniors gave one of their best performances in a long time in drawing with Kiltubrid on Saturday. It was a game we could have won and could have lost but a draw was probably the fairest outcome. Ballinamore struggled in the first half but were still only 0-7 to 0-4 down at half-time. When Kiltubrid got their goal to put them five points up, there was a risk they might pull away, but that was when our lads started to play. We dominated from that to the end and while our goal, the way it came, must have been enough to sent some Kiltubrid folk to an early grave, it was no more than we deserved on the run of play. Overall it was one of the most exciting games of the championship, well-contested by both teams and well refereed by Éamon O’Grady.

Foireann: Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, David Duignan, Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Joe Honeyman, Ciaran Murray, Brian Cafferty, Finnian Sharpley (0-5), Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Ronan Sharpley (1-0).

Junior Ladies in Final

Sean O’Heslins junior ladies qualified for the Junior B Championship final when they defeated Gortletteragh last Sunday morning in Aughavas. Conditions were bad with heavy rain and a strong breeze. The Ballinamore girls had to dig deep to overcome their opponents by a single point with Catherine Smith the hero scoring the winning goal deep into injury time. This was a great win for the club, which is only two years running. Final score was 5-5 to 5-4.

Foireann: Carol O’Connor, Áine Martin, Claire Fanning, Deborah Gilheaney, Kirby Gilgunn, Caroline McGrory (1-0), Michelle Fanning (0-2), Rowena O’Rourke, Erin Gilheany, Carmel McCartin (1-1), Orla McWeeney, Catherine Smith (1-1), Kate McTague (2-1), Sub Aisling Duignan.

The under 16 girls play Allen Gaels next Tuesday at 7.00 in Drumshanbo.

Scealta na Seachtaine – 15 Lunasa 2005

Fixtures

The quarter-final of the senior championship between Kiltubrid and ourselves is on Saturday in Cloone at 7.00. We hope all our supporters will be there to shout them on.

Intermediates Lose in Quarter – Final

Our Intermediates put up a good battle for the first half at least but just weren’t good enough for a fitter faster Glencar/Manorhamilton team on Sunday. We were the outsiders going into this game but, surprisingly, we led at half-time by 2-3 to 0-8. Two good goals by Adrian Gallogly were the means of us going in ahead at half-time. Our three points all came from frees by Paul Prior. It would have needed a super effort in the second half to stay with Manorhamilton. They scored 1-8 to our four points, two from Peter Dolan and one each from Peter Reynolds and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin. Overall it wasn’t a bad effort and it finished Glencar/Manor 1-16 Seán O’Heslins 2-7.

Foireann: Conor Harte, Freddie Walsh, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Naoise Hayden, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Joe McTague, Jason Kellett, Adrian Smith, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, (0-1), Paul Prior (0-3), Peter Reynolds (0-1), James McWeeney, Adrian Gallogly (2-0), Peter Dolan (0-2). Subs: Alan Prior, Philip Murphy, Seán McCartin.

Juniors Draw with Bornacoola.

It was our first time to field a junior team in the championship in a few years and an entertaining game it turned out to be. At half-time we led by 1-7 to 1-5 with Alan Prior getting a goal and two points, Paul Prior got three points and Shane Harte and Brian Breen one each. We had the better of the second half but just could not get clear of Bornacoola. Scores were not plentiful, between bad misses and good saves from the Bornacoola goalkeeper. Paul Prior got two points and Sean McCartin one point and that was all we could muster. With time almost up we were hanging on to a three point lead but Bornacoola goaled from a penalty to level the game. It ended Bornacoola 2-7 to O’Heslins 1-10. Good to see some players taking the field for the first time this year or indeed longer. Anthony Curran played a fine game despite it being his first outing in some years. Barney Breen filled a gap too. Well done to all and it isn’t over yet as the competition is on a league basis.

Foireann: Colm Brennan, Kevin McIntyre, Michael Quinn, Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, Anthony Curran, Peter Dolan, Aidan Galligan, Alan Prior (1-2), Paul Prior (0-5), Gordon Hughes, Shane Harte (0-1), Brian Breen (0-1), Sean McCartin (0-1). Subs: David Earley, Diarmuid Keegan, Adrian Murphy.

Golf Classic

Ár mbuíochas to everyone who helped with the Golf Classic last Friday. It was a most successful day in every way. Sincere thanks to Frank D’Arcy of Personal Advisory Services, our main sponsor and to all the other sponsors. Thanks too to the Ballinamore Golf Club for use of their fine facilities. The club is indeed indebted to Conor Harte and the organizing committee for the amount of work they did in advance.

Peil na mBan

Sean O’Heslins played Aughnasheelin in the league on Sunday morning and once again we were too strong for our neighbours, winning by 7-5 to 2-2. However it was a good run for the girls before they play Gortletteragh in the semi-final next weekend. Check fixtures for time and venue of Gortletteragh game.

Foireann: Carl O’Connor, Lauren McGrory, Clare Fanning, Áine Martin, Kirby Gilgunn (1-0), Caroline McGrory, Rowena O’Rourke (0-1), Michelle Fanning, Orla McWeeney, Carmel McCartin (3-4), Erin Gilheany, Kate McTague (2-0), Catherine Smith (1-0). Subs: Katie Duignan, Emma Reynolds, Aisling Duignan.

The Ladies Minors were beaten by St Josephs but are still in the reckoning, depending on other results.

Under 12s Lose in Final

Our under 12s put in a great performance in the Co Final but were beaten by a better and stronger Manorhamilton team. It finished 4-8 to 1-8, but really our lads never gave up. The team in the final was: Kevin Banks, Calum Taylor, John Fanning, Anthony Maguire, Cyril Smith, Eoin McHugh, Jack Cullen, Stephen McTague, Dean O’Donnell, Darren McGrory, Andrew Burns, David McLoughlin, Colm O’Reilly, Brian Beirne, Cian Reynolds, Subs: Cian McCaffrey, Daniel Sweeney, Brian Banks, Jack Bagge, Niall Creamer, Conor O’Brien, Gerard Curran, Michael O’Dell, Nathan Gallagher.

Under 14 Football

The under 14s lost to Dromahair by 1-13 to 3-3 and to Drumshanbo by 7-5 to 1-5. They play Aughavas on Friday in Aughavas.

Gary Flynn Tournament

The annual Garry Flynn Memorial Tournament was run off during the festival. Our under 14s got a bye into the final. Drumreilly beat us in the final, but all teams got medals presented by the legendary Leitrim footballer Cathal Flynn who played on many a famous day for Leitrim in the 1950s and 1960s. There was also a plaque presented to the referee in the final, Philip Farrelly.

Scealta na Seachtaine – 8 Lunasa 2005

Fixtures

The intermediates play Glencar/Manorhamilton in the quarter Final of the championship on Sunday in Ballinaglera at 12.30.

The first round of the Junior C Championship is on Sunday in Kiltubrid at 3.00

Seniors Top of their Group

Our seniors had a comprehensive win over Cloone on Sunday to put them in top place in Group 2 of the Senior Championship. To finish top of the group was a wonderful outcome for Manager, Séamus McKeon, in his first year in charge. True, we were a bit fortunate to get the smaller and easier group but we still had to win the games and win them well to be ahead of Bornacoola. We await the outcome of the St Mary’s v Kiltubrid game and we could be meeting either of those two or Glencar-Manorhamilton in the quarter finals.

We needed to win on Sunday last, and not only win but win by a margin of at least 12 points to secure top place. While Cloone had their own troubles of late they did give us a right good game in the league and could not be taken lightly. At half time we led by 1-7 to 0-1. We also dominated the second half and it finished 1-15 to 0-4, just two points ahead of the target score.

Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, David Duignan, Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic, Joe Honeyman, Ciaran Murray (0-2), Brian Cafferty (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (1-9), Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Ronan Sharpley (0-2). Subs Anthony McTague, Naoise Hayden, Paul Prior.

Intermediates Beat Aughavas.

It was a good morning in Cloone in more ways than one. The sun was splitting the stones and our intermediates followed the seniors with a big win. In this case a win was all we needed but it turned out a fairly easy one. It wasn’t so in the early stages as we struggled to get scores but a goal from James McWeeney after good work by Joseph McTague just before half-time really finished it. At half-time it was 1-8 to 0-5 and certainly not over by any means. However it was largely with the fall in the second half and we won by 2-15 to 0-6.

Team and scorers: Conor Harte, Freddie Walsh, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Naoise Hayden, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-1), Joseph McTague (0-1), Adrian Smith, Jason Kellett, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Paul Prior (0-3), Peter Reynolds (0-1), Adrian Gallogly, Paul Kieran (0-3), James McWeeney (1-3). Subs: Peter Dolan (1-1), Ronan O’Rourke (0-1), Philip Murphy (0-1), Seán McCartin.

Minors Lose narrowly.

Oughteragh Gaels lost by two points to St Mary’s in the Minor Championship on Monday. They were nine points down at half-time but brought it back to level. It was a wonderful second half performance but just not enough to keep us there.

Fixtures

Final preliminary senior game is in Cloone against Cloone on Sunday at 12.00. Intermediates play Aughavas immediately afterwards in Cloone at 1.30. Oughteragh Gaels play Manorhamilton in Minor Championship on this Friday in Aughnasheelin at 8.00. They play St Mary’s on Monday in Carrick.

Seniors Progress to Quarter Finals

A draw against Bornacoola on Sunday last was enough to send us through to the quarter-finals of the Senior Championship and, even more significantly, to guarantee our participation in the senior championship next year. It was a game that could have gone either way but over they hour we did more than enough to win but just didn’t get the scores. In the first half we had eight wides to Bornacoola’s two. We also dominated a good part of the second half. However, the fact that this was our first game this year against a Division 1 team and we more than held our own is very encouraging. The backs were outstanding and the “man of the match” was certainly Patrick McLoughlin at full-back. Midfield and forwards also did their best and in the end it was all enough to achieve two good outcomes, even if we did not win the match. It finished 0-6 each.

Foireann: Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, David Duignan (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic, Joe Honeyman, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Naoise Hayden, Ronan Sharpley, Paul McLoughlin, Finnian Sharpley (0-4). Subs: Paul Prior, Anthony McTague.

Intermediates Lose to Allen Gaels

If ever a scoreline didn’t do justice to the losing team this was it. Allen Gaels 0-16, Sean O’Heslins 0-6. We had at least four goal chances in the second half, but none reached the net. It was only in the last five minutes that Allen Gaels pulled out of our reach. This team certainly isn’t out of it yet. Foireann: Conor Harte, Freddie Walsh, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Naoise Hayden (0-1), Ruairí O Suilleabháin, Joe McTague, Paul Kieran, Jason Kellett, Peter Reynolds, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (0-1), James McWeeney (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke, Adrian Smith (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-2).

Under 12s in Championship Final

It was a roundabout route but our under 12 are now in the championship final. Carrigallen caught them on the hop when they seemed bound for the final a couple of weeks ago. As a result they had to play Drumkeerin in a play-off. That ended in a draw the first day. However on Monday last the beat a very good Drumkeerin team by 1-8 to 0-8 in Kiltubrid. They now meet Manorhamilton in the Final. Team. Scealta na Seachtaine – 18 Iuil 2005

Defeat in Final League Game

It was a bit reminiscent of big games between Aughawillan and Ballinamore in the 80s and 90s. The two teams were out in the blazing sun a full half hour before the game was due to start and a good crowd was present. Ironically, there was nothing at stage in this game only pride, as both teams were already through to the last five for the second tier of the league after the championship. It was just as well because O’Heslins were very depleted for a number of reasons. We had a very bad start, down by six points before we got a score at all. At half-time it was Aughawillan 1-5 O’Heslins 0-2.

The second half was a different story. We dominated for most of the half and held Aughawillan to two points while we scored five. However we also had a lot of wides and could have been even closer that the 1-7 to 0-7 margin in the end. All things considered it wasn’t a bad performance at all.

Team: Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Shane Ferguson, David Duignan, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Joe Honeyman, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, Naoise Hayden, Ronan Sharpley, Anthony McTague, James McWeeney, Adrian Smith (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-4). Sub Ray Logan.

Cloone Game on saturday

Our second senior championship game is against Cloone on Saturday. Venue and time to be decided.

Intermediates Lose to Allen Gaels

The scale of the absentees for the senior game led to a lot of intermediates getting a game with the seniors and as a consequence, it was largely the junior team that fielded against Allen Gaels. In fact all but two of Sunday’s team had fielded in the junior final a couple of weeks ago. It ended in a fairly hefty defeat. However, as with the seniors, it probably will not make much difference to the final league outcome.

Team: Conor Harte, Michael Quinn, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Joe McTague, Freddie Walsh, Philip Murphy, Ray Logan, Jason Kellett, Alan Prior, Peter Reynolds, Gordon Hughes, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Adrian Gallogly, Sean McCartin. Subs: Shane Harte, Kevin O’Connor, Adrian Murphy, and Ronan O’Rourke.

Girls Under 14

The girls under 14s lost to Dromahair last week. Unfortunately they were very depleted for this game, with a lot of players absent. Their panel of players was: Page Taylor, Katie Duignan, Lauren McGrory, Ciara O’Dowd, Louise Farry, Dawn Flynn, Phillipa O’Reilly, Niamh Donnelly, Laura O’Dowd, Tara Creamer, Emer McCartin, Aisling Duignan, Brona Grey.

The Under12 girls play Leitrim Gaels in the Park this Thursday at 7.00 and they play Annaduff in Annaduff on Tuesday next.

Premium Tickets

Draws for two premium tickets for the Ulster Final on Saturday and the two Hurling quarter finals on Sunday. Tickets ar on sale for €2 in pubs, shops, credit union and library. New Pitch Begins

On a beautiful day last Thursday the diggers moved in to start work on our second pitch. This was a piece of history for the club in many ways. The old pitch, which opened for the first time in 1952, was the first GAA owned pitch in the County. It has now been beautifully recreated with a surface to match anything in the country. The club is now moving to be the first in the county to have a second pitch of this standard. This reserve pitch will also be all-weather and almost full size. It is a great tribute to the present club officers and supporters and they deserve every support in their forthcoming fund raising efforts.

Seniors Cross First Hurdle in Championship

Our seniors had a very good win over Drumkeerin on Sunday evening in Páirc Seán. Their performance was excellent from the word go. Very few chances were missed either from play or from frees and with a lead of 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time, it was looking good. The second half continued in the same vein and the final outcome was 0-15 to 1-6 in our favour. The game ran to over seven minutes of overtime, during which time Drumkeerin got their goal.

Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, David Duignan (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Anthony McTague, Ciaran Murray, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-9), Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Sean Murray. Subs: Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Joey Honeyman.

Fixtures

Due to the Tommy Murphy Cup, the championship fixtures have been changed. We now play Aughawillan on Sunday in the league.

Under 12 Football

Our under 12s won their second game of the championship beating Drumreilly on Friday last. At half time the game was level at three points each. There was a dramatic finish to the game as Ballinamore led by 0-7 to 0-5. Then Drumreilly got a goal with just minutes left. However in a goalmouth scramble, Colm O’Reilly finished to the net to put us two points up again. Then with time almost up Mark McGrory got a great goal to win by 2-7 to 1-5. Team and scorers: Kevin Banks, Daniel Sweeney, John Fanning, Anthony Maguire, Cyril Smith, Eoin McHugh, Jack Cullen, Brian Beirne, Stephen McTague (0-3), David McLoughlin, Mark McGrory (1-3), Colm O’Reilly (1-0), Evan Gallagher, Andrew Burns, Cian Reynolds. Sub: Cian McCaffrey In their third game on Monday the under 12s lost to Manorhamiolton.

County Under 16 Players

Figuring on the county under 16 football team recently were Wayne McKeon and Shane Murphy as well as David Leyden on the panel. For the under 16 hurlers, Shane Murphy, Michael Costello, Fergal Earley, Sean McWeeney and Morgan Quinn have been on the team.

Wexford Hurler with Ballinamore Connections

Wexford Minor hurlers lost the Leinster final to Dublin a couple of weeks ago. Left half back on the team was Cian McGovern, a son of Ballinamore man, Liam McGovern. Liam, from Aghoo, played football at all levels for Ballinamore before moving to work in Wexford. Interestingly, the other wing half back was Rory Griffin, son of former Wexford manager, Liam Griffin.

Comhbhrón

The club wishes to express its sympathy to Josie Creamer and family, Tully on the death of Cathleen. Go ndéana Dia trócaire uirthí.

Disappointment in Junior Final

In what has been a wonderful year so far for our three adult teams, Saturday’s defeat in the Junior League Div 6 Final was a great disappointment. It was a big occasion, with the biggest crowd we have witnessed at a club match in Ballinamore in a decade or more. Not since the halcyon days of O’Heslins and Aughawillan in senior football has such a crowd gathered in the Park. Overall we played badly, apart from James McWeeney, who kept us in the game with six pointed frees and one from play, you could not brag about anyone else’s performance.

In hindsight, we lost it a week earlier in Aughnasheelin when we led into the depths of overtime, and should have had it wrapped up. However, nobody plays badly on purpose and we must compliment our panel of players who won eight of their nine games and were just unfortunate to end up losers on Saturday. Our congratulations to our near neighbours, Aughnasheelin, who surely deserve a title having fielded a junior team for the first time in a few years. For them it was a well-deserved success.  Final score; Aughnasheelin 2-6 Sean O’Heslins 0-10

Team and scorers: Conor Harte, Joseph McTague, Francis Dolan, Michael Quinn, Philip Murphy, Freddie Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Adrian Smith, Jason Kellett, Alan Prior, Peter Reynolds (0-1), James McWeeney (0-7), Sean McCartin, Adrian Gallogly, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (0-1). Subs: Gordon Hughes (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke, Diarmuid Keegan

Intermediates Beat Aughavas

It was back to winning ways on Sunday when our Intermediates played Aughavas in Aughavas. Peter Dolan was very accurate from frees and Finnian Sharpley got some good points from play, At half-time Aughavas led by 1-5 to 1-4 but we had the wind in the second half. It finished Sean O’Heslins 2-12 Aughavas 1-10.

Team and scorers: Conor Harte, Joseph Murphy, Francis Dolan, Michael Quinn, Ruairí O Suilleabháin, Rory O’Rourke, Naoise Hayden (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Ray Logan, Peter Dolan (0-6), Paul McLoughlin, Anthony McTague (1-1), Alan Prior, Adrian Smith (1-0), Finnian Sharpley (0-3), Sub: Ronan O’Rourke.

Scealta na Seachtaine – 27 Meitheamh 2005

Fixtures

The Junior League Final replay is in Ballinamore on Saturday at 7.00. After the dramatic draw a week ago, we expect a large turnout of supporters. Intermediate game on Sunday at 11.30 in Aughavas.

Junior League Final drawn

It is getting like the famous Meath v Dublin saga of draws in 1991. For the second successive Sunday, Sean O’Heslins and Aughnasheelin drew in an exciting game. A week earlier it was in Senior League, on Saturday it was in the Division 6 league Final. Saturday’s final was an exciting game, a beautiful evening, an excellent pitch, a good crowd and a game that went to and fro.

Adrian Gallogly got our first two points, and James McWeeney got two more. However, Aughnasheelin got 1-5 in the first half to lead by four points at the break.

We played much better in the second half. Points from Adrian Smith and James McWeeney, and then a goal from a penalty from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin followed by two points from the same player put us in the driving seat. Our final three points came from James McWeeney, Adrian Gallogly and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin. At this stage with the game well into injury time and holding a three-point lead we looked to have done enough for victory. However, Aughnasheelin got a goal with the last attack of the game and leveled it. Final Score, Ballinamore 1-11 Aughnasheelin 2-8. Now it is on to an eagerly awaited replay in Ballinamore on Saturday at 7.00.

Team and Scorers: Conor Harte, Kevin McIntyre, Francis Dolan, Mickey Quinn, Joe McTague, Freddie Walsh, Philip Murphy, Adrian Smith (0-1), Jason Kellett, James McWeeney (0-4), Peter Reynolds, Sean McCartin, Alan Prior, Adrian Gallogly (0-3), Cormac O Suilleabháin (1-3). Subs used: Diarmuid Keegan, Shane Harte, Gordon Hughes, Kevin O’Connor.

Seniors Beat Drumkeerin

Our seniors brought their unbeaten run to eight games with a comprehensive win over Drumkeerin on Sunday. This was our biggest win to date in the league, with a considerably changed lineout from the previous week’s game against Aughnasheelin.

Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke (1-0), Joe Honeyman, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Anthony McTague (0-1), Ciaran Murray, Brian Cafferty (1-1), Peter Dolan (1-1), Paul McLoughlin (0-3), Ronan Sharpley (0-3). Subs: Freddie Walsh and James McWeeney

Intermediates Win Over Bornacoola

It was a good weekend for all adult teams and the Intermediates finished it off on Sunday by beating Bornacoola by 1-13 to 1-10. We were behind early on and struggled until Anthony McTague’s goal but from then on we kept ahead, winning by three points. Team: Conor Harte, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Gavin Brennan, Freddie Walsh, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Joseph McTague, Anton Arandelovic, Ray Logan, Anthony McTague, Paul McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty, Peter Dolan, Adrian Smith, Finnian Sharpley. Subs: Francis Dolan and James McWeeney.

Schools team Lose Division 1 Final in Replay

Ballinamore Boys National School were in hard luck to lose the Schools Final to Kinlough in a replay in Drumkeerin. There was just a single point in it at the finish, 1-7 to 1-6. It was certainly very hard luck for many of the boys who also lost the under 12 final by a narrow margin. However, the championship is just round the corner. Ballinamore were a point behind at halftime and were down by three at one stage in the second half. A goal from Mark McGrory put Ballinamore right back into it but they just could not get the equalizer this time. Congratulations to a wonderful team who put in two great performances in the drawn game and replay. The team and scorers in the replay were: Kevin Banks, Dean Craven, Eoin McHugh, Enda McNiffe, John Fanning, Shane Moran (0-1), Jack Cullen, Conor McTague, Brian Beirne (0-2), David McLoughlin, Stephen McTague (0-1), Mark McGrory (1-0), Evan Gallagher (0-1), Peter Boyle, Cyril Smith. Subs: Nathan Gallagher, Andrew Toolan, Cian Reynolds, Cian McCaffrey, Calumn Taylor, Jack Bagge, Gerard Curran, Colm O’Reilly.

Under 14 Football

The under 14s have finished their league games. There was generally a poor turn out of players for this age group. Hopefully when the championship comes around there will be an improvement.

Leitrim Gets Derogation from Rules 124 and 131

The issue of GAA rules 124 and 131 and the possibility of getting changes to them was central to the proposals put forward for new League and Championship structures by the Committee set up by Leitrim Co Board last autumn. Subsequently two Sean O’Heslins’ motions were passed by Co Convention and went forward to GAA Congress. Congress decide to recommend that Leitrim be granted a derogation from these rules due to the County’s small playing numbers. The good news is that both of these proposals were approved by Ard Chomhairle recently. In short what this means is that a player who is eligible to play for his club in the first round of a league or championship shall remain eligible for the duration of that competition. This is a major breakthrough which restores the league position of a couple of years ago and also will help in relation to championships.

Lotto

Pota Óir is now at €6,700. Monday’s draw is in the Waterways Bar. Our Juniors, after a wonderful run, are in the Junior League Div 6 final against Aughnasheelin in Aughnasheelin on this Saturday at 7.00. Supporters are urged to be there in numbers to support them. Seniors play Drumkeerin on Sunday in the Park at 1.30.

Seniors Draw with Aughnasheelin

Seven games without defeat, that is the position after we played a hard-earned draw in Aughnasheelin on Sunday. It was a game we dominated in the second half but shot eight wides to Aughnasheelin’s one. In the end we were satisfied with the draw as it keeps our unbeaten run in the league. It wasn’t one of the better games at any stage. At half time we led by 0-4 to 0-3. Anton Arandelovic had scored two good points from frees and one brilliant one from near the end line from play. Paul Prior got another from a free. Our second half points came from Finnian Sharpley and Sean Murray from play and the crucial score was a 45 pointed by Rory O’Rourke. We were a point down at that time and it was the all-important score for us. We had a few wides after that and just could not get the winner. However, last time we met Aughnasheelin in the league we were down fifteen points at half time, so we will not complain about a draw this time.

Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, Liam Ferguson, Rory O’Rourke (0-1), John McWeeney, Anton Arandelovic (0-3), Thomas McLoughlin, Paul Prior (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Paul McLoughlin, Finnian Sharpley (0-1), Ronan Sharpley, Sean Murray (0-1). Subs: Anthony McTague, Joe Honeyman.

We made great friends in Cork and were treated well by the host club & their families. The lads had a ball, the parents and helpers had an enjoyable weekend also.

It has been a wonderful run and the best performance by our juniors since the won the Junior B Championship in 2000.

Friday’s game was not easily won and while St Osnatts are in the lower half of the division they gave us quite a fright. At half-time we led by 1-3 to 0-2, Sean McCartin had got an early goal and a point and Peter Reynolds and Ciaran Maxwell had a point each. We were against the wind in the second half and St Osnatts really put the wind up in us when they leveled the game at 1-4 each.  Tommy Dolan and Paddy Prior introduced a few switches, which seemed to work wonders. James McWeeney pointed a free to get us the lead again, Adrian Gallogly, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and James McWeeney got points. McWeeney’s was an exceptional point as he took the ball from his own half and finally pointed it. Then, man of the match, Sean McCartin hit two great goals in the space of a couple of minutes, which finished the game. Hurlers, Kevin O’Connor and Ciaran Maxwell got a point each. This really was Sean McCartin’s game, he had an excellent game throughout, scored 3-1 in total and his scores came at crucial times. Joseph Murphy was another who had an outstanding game in defence.

Team and Scorers: Conor Harte, Joseph Murphy, Michael Quinn, Ciaran Maxwell (0-2), Philip Murphy, Francis Dolan, Joseph McTague, Adrian Smith, Cormac O Suilleabháin (0-1), James McWeeney (0-3), Peter Reynolds (0-1), Sean McCartin (3-1), Daryl McFarlane, Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Trevor Martin. Subs: Daniel Hughes, Dara Keenaghan, Kevin O’Connor (0-1)

Seniors Good Win Over Glencar/Manorhamilton

On Saturday evening our seniors played Glencar/Manorhamilton in the Park. It should have been in the Bee Park, but it was unplayable and once again our new pitch came to the rescue. We won by 0-11 to 0-8 in what was probably the seniors best victory so far in the League. Glencar/Manor would be considered one of the best teams in the division and the fact that they led by 0-7 to 0-3 at half time really put it up to our young team. In our five previous league games this year, the worst we ever were at half–time was a point down in the Carrigallen game, so this might have spelled difficulty, but an outstanding display in the second half changed everything.

In the first half we got two pointed frees from Paul Prior and just one from play, from Paul McLoughlin. To confirm Glencar/Manor’s dominance, we had just one wide in the first half. Sometimes wides tell a better tale than scores. The second half was a revelation. Manorhamilton got just one point in the whole of the second half, an indication of the dominance of our backs and midfield. Our forwards kept attacking and gradually Manorhamilton’s lead was whittled away. Paul Prior pointed three frees, some from difficult angles, but the crowning glory was two very long range pointed frees from Paul McLoughlin. The North Leitrim boys never gave up and they could have stolen it when they hit the crossbar with minutes to go. A deserved three-point victory in the end.

Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, Liam Ferguson, Rory O’Rourke, Gavin Brennan, Anton Arandelovic, Thomas McLoughlin, Anthony McTague (0-1), Ciaran Murray, Finnian Sharpley, Paul Prior (0-5), Paul McLoughlin (0-4), Sean Murray (0-1)

Intermediates Beat Bornacoola

On Sunday our Intermediates beat Bornacoola by 0-13 to 1-5 to keep the chances up of figuring in the play-off stages. The game was won in the first half when we led by 0-9 to 1-1. Our scoring rate dipped in the second half but Finnian Sharpley was in great scoring form, hitting three.  Team and Scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Naoise Hayden, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Philip Murphy, Rory O’Rourke, Joseph McTague, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Ray Logan (0-1), Paul McLoughlin (0-2), Paul Prior (0-2) Anthony McTague (0-1), Peter Reynolds, Adrian Smith (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-4). Subs James McWeeney (0-1), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin.

Seniors Draw with Mohill

A draw can sometimes be a very satisfactory and satisfying result and this was the case on Sunday last when the seniors drew with Mohill in the Park. It was a wonderful and close game which we could have won and could have lost, but it certainly was a great performance considering we were short five players through injury or for other reasons.

Ciaran Murray and Finnian Sharpley got our first half points and Paul Prior scored from a penalty. At half-time it was level, Sean O’Heslins 1-2 Mohill 0-5. In the second half Mohill went ahead by two points on three different occasions. Paul Prior pulled back the first two with a point from play and a particularly good point from a free well out to the left. Mohill went up two again and Paul Prior from another free and Finnian Sharpley got it back level. Mohill got two more points and as time ticked away one wondered if we could do it again. We missed a couple of goal chances at this stage, but then Anthony McTague got a good point and with time almost up we got a fifty. Paul McLoughlin took it and put it over the bar much to the delight of the good home crowd. It finished 1-8 to 0-11 and our unbeaten run remained intact.

Team and scorers: Aidan Harte, Freddie Walsh, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Liam Ferguson, Anton Arandelovic, Thomas McLoughlin, Anthony McTague (0-1), Ciaran Murray (0-1), Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-2), Paul Prior (1-3), Adrian Smith. Sub: James McWeeney.

Juniors Great Run Continues

The juniors continued their great run with a hard-earned victory over Leitrim Gaels on Sunday. A week earlier, Eslin conceded their game to us so it is now six victories, one walk-over and a one point defeat by Glenfarne in our very first game. The score on Sunday was 3-14 to 3-6 in our favour and remarkably, ever one of our scores came from play. Above all it was Adrian Gallogly’s game as he hit the net twice within five minutes of the start and that set up this victory even though Leitrim Gaels gave us some anxious moments in the second half when they came within a couple of points of us. Adrian ended up with 2-5 on the scoreboard. Peter Reynolds got some good points also and Joe McTague, from the half-back line, came up to get two good points.

Team and Scorers: Ciaran Maxwell, Kevin McIntyre, Michael Quinn, Freddie Walsh, Joe McTague (0-2), Diarmuid Keegan, Philip Murphy, Jason Kellett, Adrian Smith (0-1), Alan Prior (0-1), Peter Reynolds (0-3), James McWeeney (0-1), Cormac O Suilleabháin (1-0), Adrian Gallogly (2-5), David Earley. Subs: Gordon Hughes, Seán McCartin (0-1).

Fixtures

The seniors play Glencar/Manorhamilton on Saturday and the juniors play St Osnatts

Seán had a great grá for Irish music and he entertained many an audience in New York and in Leitrim when he used to return for his annual visits. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air.

Ladies Junior Football 9 a side.

Sean O Heslins played their first game in the 9 a side League against Dromahair in Dromahair on Saturday evening last. In very difficult weather conditions with a strong breeze and a lot of surface water on the pitch from earlier heavy rain both teams were finding it tough. It was a game of two halves, Ballinamore in the first and Dromahair in the second half. Ballinamore got off to a bad start with Dromahair getting an early goal but the Ballinamore girls lifted their game and with wind advantage they found themselves with a score of 2-5 to 1-1 at the half way stage. The second half belonged to Dromahaire but in fairness the Ballinamore girls made it difficult for them to get scores with tight marking and a few great saves from the Ballinamore goalie. Ballinamore held on to win by 2 points. Final score was 2-6 to 3-1. Team and scores Debrah Gilheaney (0-4), Emma Reynolds, Erin Gilheaney, Katie McTague (0-1), Catherine Smith, Orla McWeeney, Claire Fanning, Aine Martin, Katie Duignan, Aishling Duignan, Carmel McCartin (2-1) Carol O Connor, Michelle Fanning, Kirby Gilgunn. Next game on Sunday in the Park at 12 oclock against Gortletteragh.

Seniors Beat Cloone

Our Seniors won their fourth game in the League on Saturday, beating Cloone by 1-15 to 2-9. The score was a lot closer than many expected, because Cloone were fielding without some key players. However, credit must be given to Cloone’s efforts; they kept coming back and the result was in doubt until the end. They got a tonic of a first minute goal but we got five points from Anton Arandelovic (2), Adrian Smith, Brian Cafferty and Finnian Sharpley, before they got another score. Cloone came back again, but when Adrian Smith got a good goal we expected that might be the signal to pull clear. At half time we led 1-7 to 1-4. Cloone came back with a few good points and then we got two exceptional points, one from Ciaran Murray who burst his way through and one from Brian Cafferty who soloed a good sixty yards before pointing. When we thought we had victory sealed, Cloone got a snap goal. Still we didn’t panic and Anthony McTague settled things with a point and Finnian Sharpley pointed a free to keep us three points ahead.

Whatever one thinks about the victory margin, any day you score 1-15 and all but the very last point from play, that’s not bad. The fact also that good points came from Anton Arandelovic, Ciaran Murray, Brian Cafferty, and a good goal from Adrian Smith was heartening. Consider also that we were missing three regulars, and then this win was as good as any of the other three.

Team and Scorers:  Aidan Harte, Naoise Hayden, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, John McWeeney, Shane Ferguson, Liam Ferguson, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Brian Cafferty (0-4), Ciaran Murray (0-3), Paul McLoughlin, Adrian Smith (1-1), Anthony McTague (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-4), Sub: Gavin Brennan.

Junior Beat Aughavas

Our juniors won their fifth game out of six with a fairly comprehensive win over Aughavas on Sunday morning. An outstanding display in the first half was more than half the battle and we led by 3-5 to 0-5 at half-time. Just as well we did because the second half was another story with Aughavas dominating. We looked to be heading for a runaway victory at half-time but we got just three points in the second half. Three great goals from Diarmuid Keegan, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and Adrian Gallogly rocked Aughavas. Two points from Alan Prior who had a very good game throughout, and one each from Seán McCartin, Ciaran Maxwell and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin made it 3-5 to 0-5 at the break. In the second half Adrian Smith got two points and Freddie Walsh got the last. Aughavas had a good second half and it ended 3-8 to 1-9. Team: Conor Harte, Kevin McIntyre, Francis Dolan, Joseph Murphy, Joe McTague, Freddie Walsh (0-1), Ciaran Maxwell (0-1), Jason Kellett, Adrian Smith (0-2), Alan Prior (0-2), Diarmuid Keegan (1-0), Sean McCartin (0-1), David Earley, Adrian Gallogly (1-0), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (1-1). The Ballinamore panel was as follows: Rachel Gilheaney, Gillian Leyden, Ciara O’Dowd, Niamh Donnelly, Paige Taylor, Bronagh Grey, Emer McCartin, Phillipa O’Reilly, Dawn Flynn, Laura O’Dowd, Megan O’Connor, Ciara Martin, Róisín McTague, Ciara McTague, Aoibheann Curran, Breda Beggan, Aoibheann Flynn, Laura Creaven, Ethel McGoldrick and Meabh Gleeson

Scealta na Seachtaine  – 9 Bealtaine 2005

Fixtures

Senior league game against Cloone on Saturday in Cloone at 6.30. Juniors play Aughavas in Aughavas on Sunday at 12.00.

An Pháirc Nua

Everyone who walks in the gate is loud in their praise of the new pitch. It really is a delight to see and the players are delighted with it too. It is now one of the best surfaces in the county and has taken us away from the bad old days of flooded pitches and pools of mud on a wet day. It is a credit to Tom Burns and the park committee. There is more work to be done with the second training pitch due to start soon. We need the continued support of all our supporters and sponsors at home and abroad to complete the job.

Intermediates Lose to Dromahair

Our Intermediates lost to Dromahair by a two-point margin on Saturday. This was a game we should have won considering our second half performance. However, a shocking bad piece of wayward shooting, eleven second half wides to one for Dromahair in the second half, meant we let it slip. Dromahair had the better of the first half and led by 1-5 to 0-4 at half time. This was an accurate reflection of the play. Peter Dolan, Anton Arandelovic from a free, Peter Reynolds and James McWeeney got our points. James McWeeney’s was a particularly good score after he did a forty-yard solo from the wing. In the second half Ballinamore had the wind and dominated the play but found it hard to score, Paul Prior, Peter Dolan, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden and Brian Cafferty got points but we missed twice as much as we scored. However there were some good performances from the forwards especially Peter Reynolds and Brian Cafferty and of course the wind was also a factor. Dromahair got three second half points from frees to keep ahead by just two. Final score Dromahair 1-8, Sean O’Heslins 0-9. Team Conor Harte, Kevin O’Connor, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Naoise Hayden (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, Joe McTague, Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Peter Reynolds (0-1), Paul Prior (0-1), Brian Cafferty (0-1), James McWeeney (0-1), Adrian Smith, Peter Dolan (0-2). Sub Philip Murphy.

Leo Kenny Cup

Our seniors had two outings in the Leo Kenny Cup over the past week. They played Ballinaglera on Tuesday in the Park and won by two points. On Sunday they played Aughavas in Aughavas and had a good win by 0-17 to 1-7. The team and scorers were:  Aidan Harte, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, David Duignan, Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Anton Arandelovic, Thomas McLoughlin (0-1) Brian Cafferty (0-2), Ciaran Murray (0-1), Paul McLoughlin, Finnian Sharpley (0-4), Paul Prior (0-5), Seán Murray (0-4). Scealta na Seachtaine – 2 Bealtaine 2005

Junior Team – Bua eile

Our juniors kept up their winning ways with a good win over Bornacoola on Monday. This was a great team effort with some exceptional performances from some of our younger players especially. Joseph Murphy and Philip Murphy, two players who came up from under 16 ranks this year, both had excellent games in defence. Kevin O’Connor and Freddie Walsh were very good too. Adrian Smith dominated midfield and got a couple of long range points from frees. Adrian Gallogly got a few great points in the second half when everyone else was off target. Sean McCartin was everywhere and contributed a lot to this victory. Trevor Martin, when he came on in the second half, gave the Bornacoola defence a worrying time and he scored one classic point after side-stepping a number of defenders.

The game was won in the first half. Adrian Smith, from a free, Peter Reynolds and Gordon Hughes got points, Adrian Gallogly got a goal and then in the last ten minutes Cormac Ó Suilleabháin hit the net twice, the second an excellent effort and these were the scores that really finished Bornacoola’s effort. At half time we led by 3-3 to 0-4. In the second half a number of goal chances were missed but a point from a 45 from Adrian Smith and three on the trot from Adrian Gallogly settled things. Daryl McFarland got a point and then Trevor Martin’s point left it secure. Final score 3-10 to 1-7. Team and Scorers: Conor Harte, Kevin McIntyre, Francis Dolan, Joseph Murphy, Shane Murphy, Freddie Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Jason Kellett, Adrian Smith (0-3), Sean McCartin, Peter Reynolds (0-1), Gordon Hughes (0-1), Alan Prior, Adrian Gallogly (1-3), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (2-0). Subs Trevor Martin (0-1), Joe McTague, David Earley, Daryl McFarlane (0-1), Ciaran Maxwell.

Historic Weekend for Club

It was a memorable weekend for the club as the first games were played on the newly-laid pitch. It is just over two years since the last game was played on the old pitch. That was a senior league game against Aughawillan on 6 April 2003. The first competitive game on the new pitch was a schools game on Monday week last. Ballinamore won. The first club game was on Friday when the under 12s played Carrigallen. O’Heslins won. The first adult game was on Saturday when the Intermediates played Glencar/Manor and that ended in a draw. Peter Dolan had the honour of getting the first score on the new pitch in an adult game. On Sunday morning the junior ladies played St Mary’s and drew. Finally the Seniors played Ballinaglera and won. Later on Sunday the juniors went to Drumreilly and won. To cap it all off, the Under 16s won the league in Cloone on Friday. Things are looking good, and the sun shone as well.

A bigger crowd than usual was present at the senior game on Sunday and the general verdict was satisfaction with the work done to date. Indeed it is a credit to all the people who have put such an effort into developing what was a seasonal pond into a state-of-the-art pitch.

Under 16 League Champions

Sean O’Heslins took the under 16 Div 1 League title defeating St Mary’s by 1-11 to 1-6 in Cloone on Friday last. It was the finest display by a Sean O’Heslins underage team in a long time. This was a decisive victory even if there was only five points in it at the finish. Indeed it was an evening to gladden the hearts of the big Ballinamore attendance as the dominated right from the start.  The point scoring, especially in the first half, was a joy to watch. Wayne McKeon got the first, Jim McTague got the second, and Darren Reynolds got the third. Then we saw a piece of real brilliance from Shane Murphy. He soloed in from the left, side stepped several defenders and hit the net. It was as good as you would ever see. Wayne McKeon got two good points; one from a free and then Darren Reynolds got two wonderful points. When O’Heslins were 1-6 to three points up, St Mary’s got through for a good goal, which came, however, very much against the run of play. However great work from Wayne McKeon set up Darren Reynolds for the last score of the half which ended 1-7 to 1-3 in our favour. Would it be enough? B’sin é an cheist.

St Mary’s came more into the game in the second half and scores were harder to come by. However, three excellent pointed frees from Wayne McKeon kept us ahead and the final point came from Shane Murphy. The final score was O’Heslin’s 1-11 St Mary’s 1-6. It was a moment to savour and ironically it was a Ballinamore man, Dan Gallogly, Vice Chairman of Bord na nÓg who was on hand to present the cup to winning Captain, Shane Murphy to the great delight of Ballinamore folk.

Apart for O’Heslin’s winning, what this final will be remembered for is the outstanding display by Wayne McKeon. He was the talk of the town after the game. Outstanding at midfield, top scorer with six points, four of them from frees, and yet it was he who was on the goal line to field dangerous balls from place kicks in the final quarter. He played the field and certainly tore the hearts out of the Carrick team. There were other great displays too. Philip Farrelly was sound in goals. David Leyden dominated at full back, Paul Darcy kept St Mary’s danger man, Brian Farrell quiet. The smaller younger backs, Matthew Murphy and Niall Hughes were excellent as was Enda Quinn. Midfielders Michael Costello and Jim McTague had great games, and the loss of McTague through injury would have set back many a team. Shane Murphy and Darren Reynolds were the two outstanding forwards but John Christy, Shane McWeeney, Ian Flynn and Stephen Beirne all played their parts.

Yes it was an occasion to savour and a credit to team mentors, Padraig McKeon and Sean Reynolds. Remarkably, this was the first ever Div 1 league title for O’Heslins. The underage leagues only started in 1985 and O’Heslins never won the Div 1 title. Team and scorers: Philip Farrelly, Paul Darcy, David Leyden, Matthew Murphy, Niall Hughes, Wayne McKeon (0-6), Enda Quinn, Michael Costello, Jim McTague (0-1), John Christie, Shane Murphy (0-2), Shane McWeeney, Ian Flynn, Darren Reynolds (0-3), Stephen Beirne. Subs used, Séamus Donnelly. Other subs, Marc Sweeney, Éamon Walsh, James Boyle, Barry Flynn.

First Adult Game on new pitch – Intermediates draw

It was a historic occasion on Saturday as Seán O’Heslins took on Glencar/Manorhamilton. This was the first adult game on the newly developed pitch and the first game played there since 6 April 2003. The pitch was looking immaculate, with new posts, well lined, a great sod of green grass, well-cut and not a weed in sight. It was a good game too, the proverbial game of two halves. Sean O’Heslins were brilliant in the first half, could have been more ahead and a goal from Manorhamilton near half-time left a scoreline of 0-10 to 1-4 which didn’t reflect our superiority. Manorhamilton dominated most of the second half; of course they did have the wind in their favour. It was looking bad when Manorhamilton went two points up with ten minutes to go but then we came back into the game, missed a few chances but then got two good points from Peter Dolan and Paul Prior to level it and then Peter Dolan put us ahead with time almost up. In one last attack in injury time Manorhamilton leveled it. A good game and a great occasion.

Peter Dolan did his fare share to keep us in this game with five points from frees and one from play. Paul Prior also got a couple, one especially good one in the first half from near the stand. The best scores of the game came from Finnian Sharpley who was always dangerous and scored three from play. It finished Sean O’Heslins 0-14 Glencar/manor 1-11. Team and Scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Freddie Walsh, Francis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Joe McTague, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Ray Logan, Peter Reynolds (0-1), Paul Prior (0-2), Peter Dolan (0-6), James McWeeney (0-1), Adrian Smith, Finnian Sharpley (0-3) Subs used: Philip Murphy, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Anthony McTague, Anton Arandelovic.

Seniors beat Ballinaglera

The seniors made it three wins out of three when they defeated Ballinaglera in the first senior game on the new sod. This was a fine committed performance that matched the occasion. Ciaran Murray opened the scoring with a point. Thomas McLoughlin, Sean Murray and Paul Prior got two more and Paul Prior pointed a free. At half time it was O’Heslins 0-5 Ballinaglera 0-4. The scoreline was a total injustice to Ballinamore as they totally dominated the half and had hit twelve wides to Ballinaglera’s one. Considering that Ballinaglera had the wind for the second half this was a bit worrying, but we need not have feared. The second half was a repeat with O’Heslins dominating but their scoring rate was a bit better. Anton and Paul Prior were in good shooting form and Thomas McLoughlin got a good one too. Indeed the longer the game went on the more dominant we became. There were a couple of particularly good pointed frees from Anton Arandelovic and Paul Prior. It finished 0-11 to 0-5 in our favour. When you win by six points, what more do you want.

Team and Scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Liam Ferguson, Rory O’Rourke, John McWeeney, Thomas McLoughlin (0-2), Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Brian Cafferty, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Anthony McTague, Finnian Sharpley, Paul Prior (0-5), Sean Murray (0-1). Subs used: Ronan Sharpley and Paul McLoughlin

Juniors Third Win

The juniors had their third win in a row when thy defeated Drumreilly by 1-6 to 0-6 in Drumreilly on Sunday. It was a low scoring closely fought game with lots of mistakes by both sides. At half time Drumreilly led by 0-4 to 0-3. Alan Prior, Adrian Gallogly and James McWeeney got our points. It was very close in the second half and the decisive score was a goal from Cormac Ó Suilleabháin after great work by Adrian Gallogly. Drumreilly fought back but two excellent points from long-range frees by Adrian Smith and a final one from James McWeeney left us safely home by three points. Team and Scorers: Conor Harte, Kevin McIntyre, Francis Dolan, Freddie Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Diarmuid Keegan, Philip Murphy, Jason Kellett, Adrian Smith (0-2), James McWeeney (0-2), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (1-0), Sean McCartin, Alan Prior (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-1), David Earley.  Subs used:  Peter Reynolds, Gordon Hughes, Trevor Martin

Peil na mBan

The ladies junior team played St Mary’s on the new pitch on Sunday morning in the league in what turned out to be a great game. Ballinamore got off to the best start but were unfortunate not to get some scores. St Mary’s got three first half goals and three points to Ballinamore’s two points. In the second half Ballinamore turned in one of their best performances since the girls’ team started. Goals from Carmel McCartin and Erin Gilheaney and points from Carmel, Orla McWeeney, Michelle Fanning, Rowena O’Rourke, Kate McTague gave Ballinamore a deserved draw. It was great to see the effort the girls put into this game. Final score 3-7 each. Team and scorers: Carol O’Connor, Orla McWeeney (0-2), Clare Fanning, Emma Reynolds, Carmel McCartin (2-1), Áine Martin, Kirby Gilgunn, Rowena O’Rourke (0-2), Katie Duignan, Aisling Duignan, Lauren McGrory, Caroline McGrory, Catherine Smith, Kate McTague (0-1), Erin Gilheaney (1-0), Michelle Fanning (0-1), Maeve Murphy, Aisling Maxwell, Next game away to Glencar/manor on Sat or Sun morning.

Fixtures

There will be a senior game against Ballinaglera at the weekend and an intermediate game also. Times and days to be confirmed.

Good Victory over Carrigallen

Our seniors had a good victory over Carrigallen to record their second victory in their two league outings to date. This was a significant victory as our seniors lost their last three or four encounters with Carrigallen. At half time we were a point behind but a very good second half performance and a particularly good last couple of minutes put us well ahead at the finish.

The backs were all sound, Anton Arandelovic was again in good form at midfield, Ciaran Murray had a particularly good game at centre half forward and the forwards were in much more accurate shooting form on this occasion. Final score Sean O’Heslins 3-11 Carrigallen 1-10. Team and Scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Liam Ferguson, Rory O’Rourke, Naoise Hayden, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic, Brian Cafferty (1-2), Ciaran Murray (1-0), Anthony McTague, Peter Dolan, Paul Prior (0-2), Sean Murray (0-5). Comhghairdeas Naomh Caillin

Congratulations to Fenagh who took the All Ireland Novelty Act title in Killarney on Sunday. It was a wonderful achievement for a group of actors who are only together for the past three years and it certainly should be an inspiration to other clubs. Their victory was also a victory for the whole of Leitrim as it puts the County on top of the All Ireland title table in Senior Scór. It is a position shared with Galway and Limerick, but what a difference in the populations of the three. Commiserations to the other three Leitrim clubs, and to Aughnasheelin in particular. They have been most unfortunate not to get that All Ireland breakthrough, but their day will surely come and no club deserves it better.

Seniors Beat Glenfarne/Kilty

Our Seniors, in their first competitive outing with new Manager, Séamus McKeon, had a convincing win over Glenfarne/Kilty on Saturday evening in Aughawillan. While the winning margin was only two points, the reality was that O’Heslins were way ahead on the run of play and only for kicking so many wides in the second half they should have been out of sight long before the finish. However the Glenfarne lads made our supporters sweat it out till the end and indeed they had three wides in the last five minutes.

In the first half Anthony McTague and Sean Murray both got a couple of good points from play and Anton Arandelovic got another plus one free pointed by Sean Murray.  At half time it was 0-6 to 0-2 in our favour and that was an accurate reflection of the run of play. The second half was something else. We dominated the play entirely but shot wide after wide. After hitting eleven wides, our first score was a good point from Anthony McTague. Then a rare break upfield by Glenfarne and they scored a good goal which really threw the cat among the pigeons. Could we possibly lose a game where we were so dominant? More wides and no scores until Ciaran Murray got a point, which settled the nerves a bit. At this stage O’Heslins had shot 18 wides in the second half and got just two points. Then Glenfarne made a few bursts upfield and got a point and also hit three wides from scorable positions. However, we held out for a deserved win.

Apart from the wides this was a very strong enthusiastic performance. The backs defended well with David Duignan the outstanding performer on the field. Johnny McWeeney and Rory O’Rourke weren’t far behind either. Anton Arandelovic and Thomas McLoughlin won the midfield battle and Anthony McTague and Sean Murray were the two best forwards but all fought for everything. A very encouraging performance with the final score 0-8 to 1-3 in our favour. Team and Scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson. John McWeeney, Rory O’Rourke, Naoise Hayden, Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Anthony McTague (0-3), Peter Dolan, Paul Prior, Sean Murray (0-3). Subs used: Ronan Sharpley, Liam Ferguson, Adrian Smith and Finnian Sharpley

Intermediates Overcome Aughawillan

Our Intermediates made it two wins out of three when they beat Aughawillan on Sunday after the dinner. The talking point in this game was the outstanding performance of Anton Arandelovic in the middle of the field. He caught everything that dropped in that area in the second half especially and he really crucified the opposition. Seldom do you see any one player so dominate a game.

At half time we led by 0-6 to 0-1 and it could have been more as we hit eight wides to Aughawillan’s one. Finnian Sharpley got a couple of lovely points, Anton Arandelovic got one exceptional one and Peter Dolan pointed a couple of frees one of which was a great one from out near the sideline. Like the seniors the previous day, a goal against the run of play from Aughawillan, and a good one too, gave us a bit of a fright but it wasn’t enough to disturb the way the team was playing. Pointed frees from Peter Dolan and Anton Arandelovic and one from play from Finnian Sharpley secured our lead and it ended 0-11 to 1-2 in our favour. Seven of our points were from frees and our best scoring forward was Finnian Sharpley who got three good points from play. Overall it was another day of great determined effort and this team can go places if they keep playing like this. Team and Scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Freddie Walsh, Rory O’Rourke, Francis Dolan, Naoise Hayden, Paul McLoughlin, Joe McTague, Anton Arandelovic (0-3), Adrian Smith, Peter Reynolds, Peter Dolan (0-5), Brian Cafferty, Anthony McTague, Paul Prior, Finnian Sharpley (0-3). Subs Used: James McWeeney, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin

Playing on County Teams

Sean O’Heslins are well represented on county teams these days at all levels, men’s and ladies. On the County under 14 girls, Deborah Gilheaney, Emma Reynolds, Lauren McGrory and Katie Duignan are involved. Kirby Gilgunn and Claire fanning are on the County under 16s and Orla McWeeney and Carmel McCartin are on the County Seniors.

Kevin O’Connor figured on the County hurlers team that had a big win over Cavan on Sunday. James McWeeney has been playing well with the County Minor footballers and Wayne McKeon, Shane Murphy and David Leyden are on the County Under 16 panel.

Under 16 football

The under 16s played their final game in the group stage of the league on Sunday in Aughawillan against Drumreilly. Although already in the league final this was a good run out for the lads who were too strong for Drumreilly. The Ballinamore lads scored some great points and played some great football but they now have to wait until Friday to see who they will play in the final. Team and scorers on Sunday: Philip Farrelly, Séamus Donnelly David Leyden, Matthew Murphy, Mark Sweeney, Michael Costello, Paul Darcy, Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon (0-5) Darren Reynolds (0-4), Shane Murphy (2-5), John Christie (1-0), Ian Flynn, Stephen Beirne, Shane McWeeney (0-1). Subs used: James Boyle (1-1), Éamon Walsh

Junior Ladies Win

Intermediates play Aughawillan in Aughawillan on Sunday at 2.30.

Juniors Good Win Over Gortletteragh.

Our Juniors gave an outstanding second half display to beat Gortletteragh in Gortletteragh on Sunday morning. At half time, if you were a betting man you wouldn’t put much on Ballinamore’s chances. It was Gortletteragh leading by 0-5 to 0-2. A point from Adrian Gallogly and a pointed free from Adrian Smith was our total. The second half was a revelation. Peter Reynolds played an outstanding role and Adrian Smith and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin began to control midfield. The forwards, particularly Adrian Gallogly, Sean McCartin and David Earley, did great work and the backs ably led by Francis Dolan and Kevin McIntyre cleared everything.

The points started to come from Peter Reynolds and David Earley. Eventually O’Heslins pulled back to within a point and the Adrian Smith scored an outstanding point from a free over 50 yards out on the wing. A minute later he took another free from half-way, which was allowed hop on the square and over the bar. That put us one point up. Alan Prior put us two up with minutes to go and that was the way it finished 0-8 to 0-6 for Seán O’Heslins. Team Conor Harte, Kevin McIntyre, Francis Dolan, Joe McTague, Philip Murphy, Freddie Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Adrian Smith (0-4), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Gordon Hughes, Peter Reynolds (0-1), Sean McCartin, Tommy McCormack, Adrian Gallogly (0-1), David Earley (0-1). Subs used: Joe Murphy, Alan Prior (0-1), Daryl McFarland

Under 16s in League Final

It was an eventful week for the Under 16s as they had to play two games on successive nights, Thursday and Friday, and they won both of them well, to qualify for the final. The first game was against Dromahair in Aughnasheelin on Thursday. It was a very one-sided game with O’Heslins far too strong. The game was over at half time with O’Heslins up by 0-19 to 0-1. In the second half O’Heslins continued to dominate and ran out easy winners. Team and scorers: Philip Farrelly, Paul Darcy, David Leyden, Enda Quinn, Matthew Murphy, Michael Costello, Neil Hughes, Jim McTague (0-2), Wayne McKeon (0-8), Darren Reynolds (0-3), Shane Murphy (0-8), John Christie (0-2), Shane McWeeney, Stephen Beirne, Ian Flynn (0-1). Subs Séamus Donnelly, James Boyle, Barry Flynn, Mark McGrory.

On Friday they played St Mary’s in Carrick. This was a game where victory would mean a place in the final. Even after playing a game the evening before the lads tore into it from the start and went in leading a t half-time by 0-5 to 0-0. In the start of the second half O’Heslins scored some great points to go well ahead of the Carrick lads who got a goal with the last kick of the game. It finished 0-12 to 1-1. This was a great team effort seeing as it was their second game in two days and, more than that, five of the lads, Philip Farrelly, Michael Costello, Darren Reynolds, Wayne McKeon and Shane Murphy had played a minor game on Wednesday. Now they are in the final although there is one ordinary game left against Drumreilly in Aughawillan on Friday at 6.30. Team and Scorers on Friday were: Philip Farrelly, Paul Darcy, David Leyden, Matthew Murphy, Michael Costello, Neil Hughes, Enda Quinn, Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon (0-4). Darren Reynolds (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-5), Shane McWeeney, Ian Flynn (0-1), Stephen Beirne (0-1) Séamus Donnelly. Subs; John Christie, James Boyle, Barry Flynn, Mark McGrory.

Rule 42

There was a lengthy and considered debate on Rule 42 at the club meeting on Friday night with a bigger than usual attendance for a club meeting. This was surely a game of two halves. We were devoured in the first half and down by twelve points at half-time yet, in the second half we could have won it but for some bad wides and the crossbar. We really got a bad start and a couple of defensive slip ups let Carrick in for snap goals. Our only reply was a pointed free from Peter Dolan and a great goal from Brian Cafferty. Anthony McTague was unlucky not to get another goal but at half time we were down by 3-7 to 1-1.

It looked bleak at this stage but the second half saw a remarkable recovery. Points from Paul Prior and three from frees by Peter Dolan, put a better complexion on it. Then Brian Cafferty, who had an outstanding game all through, scored another great goal and Anthony McTague got good one. Time beat us at this stage but in the end a defeat by 3-10 to 3-5 was more than we could have expected at half time. Team and scorers: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Freddie Walsh, Jason Kellett, Francis Dolan, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Kevin O’Connor, Adrian Smith, Anton Arandelovic, Anthony McTague (1-0), Peter Dolan (0-4), Brian Cafferty (2-0), Tommy McCormack, Paul Prior (0-1) Finnian Sharpley. Subs Used: Peter Reynolds, Ciaran Maxwell, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Gordon Hughes.

Hurlers Lose B Final Replay

The replay of the Senior B Championship (2004) was played in Aughawillan on Monday morning. We struggled to get into form in the first half and were 0-4 to 0-1 behind at half-time. It looked for long periods as if we would bridge the gap in the second half but, while we did get three points, time ran out and Manorhamilton ran out deserving winners by 0-5 to 0-4. Congratulations to Manorhamilton who were winning their first adult hurling title since 1959. Thanks also to Aughawillan for the use of their pitch, which was in grand shape for hurling. Team: Tommy McCormack, David McGovern, Ciaran Maxwell, Conor Harte, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Kevin O’Connor, Hugh Gough, Thomas McLoughlin, Peter Dolan, Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-3), Ronan Sharpley, Trevor Martin, Adrian Smith, Sean McCartin.

Juniors beat Aughnasheelin

Last Sunday was the hottest March day since 1965 and the scene on the new Aughnasheelin pitch was a sight for sore eyes with youngsters of all ages training on the practice area, a green lush sod of grass and an under 16 match as curtain raiser that didn’t leave a mark on the ground. Yes it was a March day with a difference and then a very well contested junior game between parish rivals Aughnasheelin and Ballinamore. It was also good to see Aughnasheelin fielding a second team again in adult competition and one well fit to hold their place at this level.

It was a close game all through and we led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half time with James McWeeney and Tommy McCormack in good scoring form. Scores were very scarce in the second half although we had wind advantage and we got only three scores, two pointed frees from James McWeeney and a very good point from Peter Reynolds. The eventual winning of the game was a wonderful save from Conor Harte in goals in the final minutes. Had that gone in Aughnasheelin would have the two points in the bag instead of us. It finished 0-9 to 0-7 in our favour. Team: Conor Harte, Kevin McIntyre, Francis Dolan, David Burns, Philip Murphy, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Joe McTague, Jason Kellett, Adrian Smith, Sean McCartin, Peter Reynolds (0-2), James McWeeney (0-5), Tommy McCormack (0-2), Adrian Gallogly, David Earley. Subs used: Trevor Martin, Daryl McFarland, Adrian Murphy.

Under 16s Beat Glencar/Manor

Sean O’Heslins played their first game in the Under 16 league on Sunday evening in Manorhamilton and came home with a win. This was one of the best performances from our under 16s in recent years with a team that lost a lot of players from last year’s under 16 championship winning team. It was a real effort with backs, midfield and forwards all working their socks off. The first half was a close affair with Ballinamore getting two goals, one each from Stephen Beirne and Ian Flynn, and they led a half-time by 2-6 to 0-5. Ballinamore got the first score of the second half, a point from Wayne McKeon, but Manor got the next four to leave only four points in the game. The lads dug deep, getting some great points and a goal from Shane Murphy to seal the points on a score line of 3-12 to Manor’s 0-11. Team and Scorers: Philip Farrelly, Paul Darcy, David Leyden, Mark Sweeney, Neil Hughes, Jim McTague, Mathew Murphy, Darren Reynolds, Wayne McKeon (0-4), Shane McWeeney (0-1), Shane Murphy (1-3), John Christie (0-3), Ian Flynn (1-1), Stephen Beirne (1-0), Michael Costello. Subs: Séamus Donnelly, James Boyle, Barry Flynn, Mark McGrory. Next game is against Dromahair at home on Friday 25 March at 5.00pm

Intermediates Good Win

The Intermediate team started their League campaign with a good win over Mohill on Saturday. This was a wonderful performance from all of the team and subs. It was great for a start to see such a panel of players out and from early on you could see that players were fighting to retain their place. There were some exceptional performances with the forwards playing particularly well. They scored 3-11 and all but one point of this was from play. Adrian Smith, Anthony McTague Tommy McCormack and Brian Cafferty were in great scoring form and they got excellent back-up from Anton Arandelovic and Ray Logan in midfield. It would be difficult to single out anyone in defence as they all played well.

At half time we led by 2-6 to 0-3 and the score that stood out was the second goal. It started when Anton Arandelovic dispossessed a Mohill player well out near the sideline. Some great passing followed ending in a great catch and a great finish from Adrian Smith. In the second half Brian Cafferty got another great goal, which finally ended the contest.  Final score Sean O’Heslins 3-11 Mohill 0-5. Team: Colm Brennan, Francis Dolan, Gavin Brennan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Naoise Hayden, Rory O’Rourke, Joe McTague, Anton Arandelovic, Ray Logan, Anthony McTague (0-3), Peter Dolan (0-2), Brian Cafferty (2-1), James McWeeney, Adrian Smith 91-3) Tommy McCormack. Subs used: Michael Quinn, Paul McLoughlin, Peter Reynolds, and Shane Harte.

Junior Game

Scór

Our quiz team or Alan Martin, Alan Banks and Andy Duffy took part in the Co Finals on Saturday night, Bornacoola were the winners.

You’re a Star – Ballinamore and Scór connection

Last week’s victory by Donna and Joseph McCall was greeted with great excitement in Ballinamore as the backing group was part of the well-known Shaylyn group from the town. The group also has  strong links with Scór and Martha Gilheaney won a County title with Seán O’Heslins in Figure Dance and Lorraine Sweeney won a County title with the club in Instrumental Music, both in Scór na nÓg. Of course another member of the backing group, John McCartin, won a County and Connacht Scór title with Carrigallen.

Hurling

It is expected that the replay of last year’s B hurling final will be played at Easter weekend. Under 16 hurling starts on Tuesday April 5 with a game against Mohill.

Help With Hurling

Hurling needs a bit of a boost within the club and it is hoped to arrange a meeting shortly to help reorganize the game. Anyone who could help or give a bit of a hand with underage teams would be welcome.

First Junior League Match of the Year

Our first outing of the year was in Glenfarne on Sunday morning. A lovely bright morning it was and a good close game too. Glenfarne started off better and were 0-7 to 0-2 ahead at half-time and could have been more ahead. Tommy McCormack from a free and Diarmuid Keegan got our scores. Although Glenfarne looked the fitter team O’Heslins had the better of the second half and might indeed have won the match had Diarmuid Keegan’s shot not gone inches wide of the post. Jason Kellett got a point and then Trevor Martin got the goal that brought us back into the game. Cormac Ó Suilleabháin got a second goal and Shane Harte got the final point from a free. We could have won but really Glenfarne were that little bit better over the hour. Overall it was great to see 21 players out for the first game of the year and for our third team at that. Final score Glenfarne 0-11, Sean O’Heslins2-4. Team and scorers: Conor Harte, Micheál Quinn, Francis Dolan, Joe McTague, Kevin O’Connor, Diarmuid Keegan (0-1), Ciaran Maxwell, Jason Kellett (0-1), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (1-0), Gordon Hughes, Shane Harte(0-1), Shane Creamer, David Earley, Tommy McCormack (0-1), Sean McCartin. Subs used: Kevin McIntyre, Philip Murphy, Adrian Murphy, Trevor Martin (1-0).

Great to see young people taking on important jobs in the club. Ronan O’Rourke has taken on trainer of the minors this year. Ronan was a minor himself last year although injury kept him out of the action for most of the year. Ronan is assisted by Philip Farrelly and Padraig McKeon.

Scór

We had a small representation in Scór at the weekend, just a quiz team. The trio of Alan Martin, Alan Banks and Andy Duffy qualified for the final with a score of 56 out of a possible 60. Not bad with “limited” preparation.

News from Singapore

Brendan Wisely has recently been appointed as secretary to the Singapore Gaelic Lions Club.  In 2004 the club had over 100 members and fielded 4 teams in the Asian Gaelic Games, which were held in Hong Kong. This year’s Asian Games will be held in Shanghai, China where again Singapore will field 4 teams. We learn from Brendan that he looks forward to the latest news on our club website which he gets on a Tuesday morning around 9am. Singapore is eight hours ahead of Ireland, so he probably sees the latest Sean O’Heslins news before anyone in Ballinamore or indeed in Ireland does because at that time it is 1am on Tuesday morning in Ireland and the latest news has just been added after the Monday night Lotto. Except some poor bugger is suffering from insomnia or got up to take a Panadol it is unlikely anyone in Ballinamore sees the news before Brendan. Isn’t it a changed world since the time it took five weeks to get to the Far East?

Scór na nÓg

Sean O’Heslins dancers put in a great performance in Athlone on Saturday but the adjudication went to Clare. It was a great occasion and the dancers, Clíona McHugh, Edel Farrelly, Erin Gilheany, Sinead Earley, Sara Sweeney, Maria O’Reilly, Shauna Cullen and Michelle Reynolds gave a flawless performance. The general belief was that it was between Ballinamore and Kilmurry/Ibrikane and it went the Clare way. It was disappointing but the strength of Sean O’Heslins in Scór is to keep trying. The club has won a lot of All Irelands; in fact the club is in the proud position of having won more All Irelands than any other club in Ireland. Yes, Ballinamore is the “Kerry” of Scór but like Kerry in football, they have lost more than the won, The secret is to keep getting there and there is no doubt this group of girls will keep on trying and they, and their tutor Orla McCaffrey, will get that All Ireland they deserve.

Kilglass – Tráth na gCeist Champions

A little rub of success did come this way because the trainer of the highly successful Kilglass Gaels team which won the Tráth na gCeist is Nuala Diffley who works in the AIB in Ballinamore. Comhghairdeas to Nuala and Kilglass Gaels who really ran away with the title on Saturday. Comhghairdeas freisin do Eilís Ni Fhaoláin a rinne sár-obair mar Bhean a’ Tí.

Training

Training is now in full swing and there was a great turn-out of players for training sessions under the new manager, Séamus McKeon. Training continues this Saturday night in St Felim’s at 7.00 and on Sunday morning at 9.00am. All players, senior, intermediate and junior please be there.

Minor Football

Our minors lost to Bornacoola by 2-6 to 1-2 on Sunday morning.

County Hurling

Three of our players figured on the county senior hurlers last Sunday, Kevin O’Connor started on the team and Mark Egan and Ciaran Maxwell came on as subs. Leitrim were well beaten, but they were badly depleted by yellow cards and injuries, beside that Mayo are far too strong for division three.

Comhbhrón

Sympathy is extended to the Kelly family, Aughawillan on the death of Patrick Kelly. Pat, or Purty Kelly as he was known, played with Ballinamore in the early 1940s. At a time when the club was suspended in 1942 and a parish league took place, Purty played with Clenaghoo. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air.

Scór na nÓg All Ireland

The big day arrives on Saturday for our Figure dancers. The eight girls carry the hopes of our club on stage in Athlone and will no doubt do themselves proud. It is a great occasion for all and one to be savoured. Not many get the chance to perform in an All Ireland Final but Sean O’Heslins are fortunate to be part of a great tradition in Scór and indeed there has seldom been a year for the past twenty at least when the club did not make an appearance on the All Ireland final programme. Go mbeidh lá maith agaibh a chailíní agus banaigí taitneamh as.

New Team Manager

On a biting cold morning, last Sunday our new senior team manager was introduced to the players. He is Séamus McKeon from the Colmcille club in Co Longford. Séamus was a prominent player with Colmcille and his family has been connected with football in Colmcille for more than a century. Séamus’ grandfather, James McKeon played on the Colmcille team which won the first ever Longford Senior championship in 1890 and, more than that, he was club secretary and Co Board delegate as well. Séamus already has a reputation as a successful team manager having been involved with the Colmcille team which won three-in-a-row of under 21 titles between 2001-2003. He was also a selector with Longford teams. Go n-éirí leat a Shéamuis. On Sunday he had his son with him, also named Séamus, mad for football, and the fourth generation of the family to play football

House Project

One of the most ambitious projects the club’s Finance Committee has undertaken is the building of a house in Corgar. This house is now under construction with a beautiful view of Corgar Lake. The house is now up for sale and anyone interested should contact Gordon Hughes who is in charge of sale. The profits from the sale of the house will go to the Park development Fund.

Help Wanted in Park

Our restored park will be playable this summer, probably in May/June but there is a lot of work to be done on the dressingrooms and surrounds to make that possible. There has been work going on this past couple of Saturdays and will continue this Saturday. Tom Burns and Conor Harte would like to have a Meitheal in the Park this Saturday at 10.00 to get the clean up finished. If you can help be there.

Coaching

There is a very important coaching seminar, which should be of interest to anyone in charge of teams and it takes place this Saturday in Carrick on Shannon from 10-1pm. It is entitled “Movement and sped of thought in mind and body” and will be presented by John Morrison, physical trainer to the Derry team. Contact Paddy O’Connor if you wish to attend

Playing for County before playing for club

Last week we mentioned the unusual event that happened when Damien Crossan played for Leitrim Senior county team before he had ever fielded in senior for his club. Well we discovered that another Ballinamore man did the exact same, and another goalkeeper as well. Francis Milton played in a county game for Leitrim when Damien Crossan was injured at a time when he too had yet to figure in a Seán O’Heslins senior team. Of course Francis had played on Co Minor and Under 21 teams and would have been a well-known goalie but with Damien between the sticks for Ballinamore Francis would not have got on the senior club team.

Great Celebration of 1979

Oíche Mhór chainte agus céiliúrtha. The general verdict was that a great night was had by all on the occasion of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of our championship victory in 1979. The Commercial Hotel was packed for the night, which started at 7.00 with a gathering of the players in Pat Joe’s Bar. The function was attended by new Cathaoirleach of the Co Board, Gerry McGovern who reminisced on the great meetings with Sean O’Heslins in the 1970s. All of the players and mentors were presented with inscribed mirrors, produced for the occasion by Alan Banks and Jim Smith. The presentations were made by Club Cathaoirleach, Conor Harte. Míle buíochas to all who helped with the function, in particular, Peter Reynolds who was the main sponsor and Ciarán Murray who produced the very fine programme booklet. Thanks also to Sharon Sweeney of Cannaboe Confectionery who provided chocolates at each table. Indeed best wishes to Sharon on her new enterprise in chocolate making.

The Team in 1979

The team as it lined out in the final was: Noel Crossan, Sean Kavanagh, Brendan Burns, Michael McTague, Barry O’Reilly, Sean Creamer (Capt), Brian Gallogly, Patrick McKiernan, Joey Smith, Gerry Logan, Ollie Honeyman, Gerry Reynolds, Hugh Murphy, Sean Crossan, Paddy Dolan. The two subs that came on were, Tom Burns and Gay Darcy. The other subs who were also presented with mementoes were; Damien Crossan, Colm O’Reilly, Thomas McTague, Tom McCaffrey, Sean Sharpley, Walter Sharpley, Brian McKiernan, Pat Ferguson. Francis Duignan, club Chairman at the time, and Brendan Gormley, Joseph McTiernan and Séamus Hayden, the three selectors were also given presentations.

Player of the Year

The club Player of the Year award was also announced on Friday night. This award is made to the person who is chosen by the players as the player of the year. The award this year went to Francis Dolan. Comhghairdeas a Phroinnsíos

Videos of the Presentations

The presentations were videod and copies of the video can be ordered from Sean O Suilleabháin. Anyone wanting a video should order it by this Sunday night, as it is essential to know how many copies are required before ordering them.

Championship winners in London, New York and North America

One of the messages that came home to us from talking to the players who played in 1979 was that emigration did have an effect on teams in the early 1980s. While people remember the emigration of the 1950s and 1960s it is often forgotten that there were difficult enough times in the 1980s. Some of that team did emigrate although, happily, all but one of the 25 members of the panel are now in Ireland, the exception being Tom McCaffrey who is in San Francisco, but made the journey home for last Friday’s celebration.

The good news was that all of those who went away brought their football boots with them and played on successful teams in England and America. Patrick “Beezer” McKiernan played with Tara’s in London and won a London Senior Championship with them. Gerry Reynolds played with the Leitrim club in New York and won a New York title with them also. Tom McCaffrey played with Young Irelanders in San Francisco and won two North American Intermediate titles with them.

Played County Football while still a sub for Club

Between Noel and Damien, there was hardly a senior match without a Crossan in goals for Ballinamore seniors for over 30 years between the late 1960s and the year 2000. Noel was the regular Seán O’Heslins goalie for a long period of years and then Damien got his chance. However an interesting fact is that Damien played senior football for Leitrim before he played senior football for Ballinamore. How it happened was that Noel was also the regular County goalie and when he was injured before a National League match, Damien was called up, although he hadn’t yet played senior for the club.

Hastings Cup

While we hadn’t a player on the Leitrim Senior panel last Sunday, we were represented a couple of weeks ago on the County under 21s who were unlucky to lose by a point to Longford in the Hastings Cup final. Liam Ferguson played in the half back line and played well too.

Two Ballinamore men on GAA Management Committee

While the club’s representation on county senior teams may be light we certainly are well represented in other places. Amazingly, there are two Ballinamore men on the top committee of the GAA at national level, the Coiste Bainistí or Management Committee. Tomás Ó Moráin, Uachtarán, Comhairle Chonnacht and Gearóid Ó Mathúna, Leitrim’s Central Council delegate are both members of the 12 person Coiste Bainistí. Considering that there are only twelve members on this committee it is amazing that two of them are from the one club. It underlines the significance of the club’s contribution to the GAA in many ways, as was mentioned at our function on Friday last by Co Board Chairman, Gerry McGovern. There was a time some years ago when there were three Leitrim men on this committee. George O’Toole, Gerry Mahon and Fr Dan Gallogly were all on the Management Committee at the one time and of course two of them were from Ballinamore also.

Tickets are still available for Friday night’s big celebration of the 1979 Championship win. If you havn’t got yours, contact Paddy O’Connor at 9644264.

All is in readiness for the big celebration of Sean O’Heslins great Senior Championship win of 1979. On this Friday night in the Commercial Hotel all of the players and mentors from that victory will assemble and recall one of the great years of the club. At the time, Ballinamore were also in the middle of a four-in-a-row of senior league successes. This was also the team that had three members of the Leitrim Millennium team in action together, indeed the only time when that happened. Those attending are reminded that the function will start at 8.30. Indeed the players are coming together at 7.00pm for video coverage of their memories of that time, so they will be well ready for a feed at 8.30.

Big Win

Treasurer, Anne Shanley, had a big win in her home territory, in the Glencar/Manorhamilton GAA Christmas Draw. She had to share her win with John Harte but she considered it worthwhile because having the Harte name on the ticket greatly increased the chance of it being pulled out. Bhí an ceart aicí.

Ballinamore – Aughawillan

Congratulations to Ballinamore/New York woman, Catherine Ecker on her engagement to Aughawillan’s. Pius Flanagan.

Tomás Ó Moráin on Shannonside

Tommy Moran’s story was the highlight of Shannonside’s Sunday sport programme last Sunday. It certainly told the story of Tommy’s remarkable contribution to the GAA and to everything Leitrim and was most entertaining.

Great Scór na nÓg Victory

It was a great occasion for the club on Saturday night in Claremorris when our Figure dance team took the Connacht title. This group of dancers has taken to club to success in an area where we never had it before. Sean O’Heslins is a great and revered name in Scór circles, particularly in the disciplines of Novelty Act, Tráth na gCeist, Set Dancing, Singing and Recitation. However, Figure Dance was one area where we had never passed Connacht before. Now the club will be present on stage in Athlone in four weeks time as Connacht Champions. It was a wonderful achievement for a group tutored for the last few years by Orla McCaffrey. Some of the girls have been dancing for the club for a number of years while others of the group are younger. However they performed as a great team on Saturday and were worthy winners. Comhghairdeas do Clíona McHugh, Edel Farrelly, Erin Gilheany, Sinead Earley, Sara Sweeney, Maria O’Reilly, Shauna Cullen and Michelle Reynolds. Congratulations too to Fenagh Set Dancers and to David Evans of Kiltubrid who won the Solo Singing.

Tickets for the All Ireland

The All Ireland Finals are in Athlone on Saturday Feb 19th and tickets should be ordered immediately with Cyril Smith. There are always difficulties with people ordering tickets and then deciding later they are not going. It is hard to get the required amount of tickets but it can also be a problem and an embarrassing one for the Scór organiser to be left with spare tickets a day or two before the event. Please understand that if you order a certain amount of tickets it will then be your problem to get rid of them if you cannot subsequently go.

Scór Sinsear

As we await the All Ireland Scór na nÓg finals it is now time to prepare for Senior Scór. Anyone interested in taking part in Scór Sinsear should contact Cyril Smith

1979 Celebration Function

Order your tickets immediately for the Celebration function on the 4 Feb. The event will be a sell out and don’t risk being left without one. Tickets available from Paddy O’Connor at €30 each

Membership

Membership should be paid to Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin immediately. Players are asked to arrange payment well before any games start.

Circuit Training

Circuit training for all players in the Sports Complex at 7pm on Saturday.

Ladies Football

Meeting of Seán O’Heslin’s ladies in the Community Centre on this Sunday at 2pm. All players please attend. Copies of the video or DVD of the presentation function can now be ordered from Sean Reynolds, Padraig McKeon or Geraldine McIntyre. Videos cost €25 and DVDs cost €35.

Celebration of 1979 Senior Victory

25 years ago the club won the senior championship and the club is inviting all of that team and panel to a celebration to take place in the Commercial Hotel on 4 February. This was the team that bridged a couple of generations. The legendary Paddy Dolan was playing at corner forward and won his eight senior championship medal that day. That was a full 23 years after he had won his first in 1956. Other veterans on the field that day were Sean Kavanagh, Brendan Burns, Michael McTague and Sean Creamer.

On the otherhand this team was dominated by very young players such as Ollie Honeyman, Gerry Reynolds, Gerry Logan, Barry O’Reilly and Hugh Murphy. However what makes this team unique is that it was the only occasion when Ballinamore’s three members of the Leitrim Millennium Team played together on a championship winning team. Noel Crossan, Ollie Honeyman and Paddy Dolan all played on that team making it a memorable occasion. As no other club in the county had three members selected onto that team, this makes the 1979 success a truly unique victory.

It will be another memorable occasion on 4 February when that team comes together again and it will no doubt be a sell-out event. A limited number of tickets are available for the event and these will be made available in the first instance to paid-up club members. Please contact Paddy O’Connor immediately. The club is delighted to hear that the event is being sponsored by P J Reynolds Hardware.

Connacht Scór na nÓg

Good luck to our competitors in Rince Foirne and indeed all Leitrim representatives in the Connacht Finals in Claremorris on this Saturday.

Videos or DVDs of Medals Presentation

The presentations of medals to the under 16 footballers and the junior ladies was videod and copies will be available shortly. In order to know how many to produce please order your copies immediately with Sean Reynolds, Padraig McKeon or Geraldine McIntyre. This will be a unique record of a famous occasion for those teams and will be treasured in time to come. Anyone involved should order their copies immediately and they will be available in either video or DVD. Please specify which format you require.

Buíochas

The Irish Epilepsy Association has written to thank the club for organizing the recent church gate collection. A total of €678 was collected.

Ladies Wanted

Great progress has been made with ladies football in Ballinamore over the past couple of years. Sean Reynolds, Padraig McKeon, Geraldine McIntyre, Dawn McKeon, Aisling Flaherty and others have put a lot into fielding teams at all grades. More help is needed and ladies in particular. Parents or indeed other ladies who would give a helping hand either on training evenings or at matches would be greatly appreciated. Please contact any of the above-mentioned if you can help

Hurling help

Similar to ladies football, hurling is in need of more people to help out with teams. A meeting will be held shortly to plan hurling for 2005 and if anyone would like to help please let paddy O’Connor or Seán Ó Suilleabháin know.

Lotto

Pota Óir is now at €5,200. Next Monday’s draw is in Flynn’s Waterways Bar. Winners of €40 last Monday were: Tom Burns, Alan Martin, Rosóg, Dessie Kieran, Ann Marie Costello, Ardrum, Francis Breen, Roscrea, Seán óg McKeon. Winner of bottle of whiskey sponsored by Frank Flynn: Séamus Mac Murchadha. Numbers drawn: 73562401.

Scór na nÓg

The County Finals of Scór na nÓg on Sunday last was a wonderful occasion. Everything was in readiness and the Community Centre was in great order thanks to Cyril Smith and his strong team of helpers who had spent the weekend preparing. No wonder Ballinamore is the favoured venue for Co Scór finals. Muire Sweeney also did a great job as Bean a’ Tí.

Scór Winners

The club had one winner on the night, the figure dance team. For a number of years now Sean O’Heslins have been strong in Rince Foirne, this is primarily due to the work of Orla McCaffrey who trains both figure and set dancing groups. There was a scare at the beginning of the figure dance as the music went wrong. However, the group did not let that unsettle them and they went on to win, repeating the club’s successes in 2001, 2002 and 2003. Some of the girls figured on the 2003 team but others were winning their first county award. The group of dancers was: Sarah Sweeney, Maria O’Reilly, Shauna Cullen, Sinead Earley, Edel Farrelly, Michelle Reynolds, Erin Gilheany, Clíona McHugh.

Other Scór Competitors.

Aisling Maxwell did her best in Solo Singing and the Novelty Act team of Ross Dooner, Rowena O’Rourke and Michelle Fanning gave an entertaining display.

There were two Ballinamore groups in Rince Seit. The more experienced group was composed of Catherine Smith, Erin Gilheany, Lisa Duignan, Kate McTague, Sinéad Earley, Edel Farrelly, Clíona McHugh and Johanna Keenaghan. The second group was made up of Niamh Griffin, Orla McWeeney, Michelle Reynolds, Sarah Sweeney, Shauna Cullen, Phillipa O’Reilly, Aisling Maxwell, and Maria O’Reilly. In many previous years this Seán O’Heslins group would win a county title at least. However, Fenagh are the finest group of set dancers in Leitrim for some time and were deserving winners. Indeed one hopes that they get that one step extra this year, after reaching the All Ireland finals for the past two years. The music group of David McLoughlin, Róisín McTague, Niamh Griffin and Brid McCormack also performed well.

Buíochas

The club is indebted to the people who prepared the various groups of competitors: Orla McCaffrey, already mentioned, for figure and set dancing, Raymond McHugh who tutored the novelty act, Lorraine Sweeney who prepared the Music group and Marian Burns who helped in Solo Singing. Cyril Smith did a great job on getting the hall ready and everyone was pleased with the overall presentation on finals. Many others helped with the hall especially Steve and Stephen Ridge and the McLoughlin’s. Thanks too to the Tea Ladies and all the stewards.  Muire Sweeney, on her first venture as Bean a Tí did an excellent job but she is of course no stranger to stage having performed at All Ireland level in recitation and Novelty Act.

Comhbhrón

Sympathy to the Keegan family, Lahard on the death of Willie Keegan in Dublin. Only a few short years ago Willie was Chairman of the Oliver Plunketts club in Dublin and he invited Sean O’Heslins to take an under 14 hurling team to visit his club. The mentors who went with the team included Willie’s brother Michael. Tá sé deachair a chreidiúint go bhfuil  an bheirt acu, Michael agus Willie, ar shlí na firinne anois. Two more entertaining people you could not meet and the visit of the under 14s to Oliver Plunketts and to a Leinster Final in Croke park was a memorable one.

Sympathy also to the Wrynne family Tarmon on the death of Micheál Wrynn.

Asia Tragedy

Good news to come this way out of the awful Asian earthquake tragedy was that Mark Dolan, High St, who was in the disaster area in Thailand, escaped unharmed. Mark was in Phuket when the disaster struck but was unharmed. Amazingly Mark was back in Ballinamore and at the lotto on Monday night.

Club members have been involved in collecting funds foe the relief effort and the proceeds of last Sundays Scór raffle were donated to the fund. The club is also making a donation from this weeks Lotto raffle.

Christmas Draw

The club’s annual Christmas draw took place in Smyths Siopa Tae on Monday. The winners were as follows: €3,000, Brian Gallogly, Ardrum. €1,000, Seán Kelly, Church St. €300, Maura Sweeney, Aghadark, €100 each, Tomás Conlon, Church St, Vincent Gallagher, Costra, Gillian Gormley, Cavan, Micheál Gallagher, Killaneen, Kay Maguire, Main St, Brendan Brennan, Railway Rd, Gerry Grimes, Castleblaney. €100 prize to seller of winning ticket, P.J. McLoughlin, Tarmon. Winner of prize for seller of most tickets, P.J. McLoughlin.  The club would like to thank everybody who made this draw an outstanding success. Those who sold tickets and those who bought them.  Almost 1000 tickets were sold which is a big increase on previous years. Míle buíochas do gach éinne.

Lotto

Smiths Siopa Tae was packed for Monday’s big draw and weekly Lotto. The Pot Óir wasn’t won but the following were the €40 winners: Patsy Creamer, Seán Ó Suilleabháin, Brendan Gallagher, Sean McNiffe, Adrian Smith, Mary McTiernan, Oughteragh. Winner of bottle of brandy sponsored by Ciaran and Cathy Smyth, Mary McGovern, Drumderg. Numbers drawn; 67241035. Monday’s draw is in Pat Joe’s and the Pota Óir is €5,100
