Scéalta na Seachtaine – 31 Nollaig 2007

Draw is a Wonderful Success After months of hard work our big draw paid off with a most satisfactory level of ticket sales. It was the biggest fundraising venture ever undertaken by the club. When the Finance Committee headed by Tomás Ó Moráin decided last summer to go ahead with a €100 ticket draw, there was much debate about how it would turn out. Some thought the price was too high; others thought the prizes were too high. By the end of October when the town had been covered, despite a wonderful response, there wasn’t enough money in to cover the €35,000 prize money. Then the hard slog began. A relatively small number of people put in a trojan effort in covering the surrounding parishes in South Leitrim and also the neighbouring areas in Cavan and Fermanagh from door to door.  Club members away from home also contributed handsomely and the fact that over five hundred tickets came in over the last two days before the draw was a huge boost and most of those were from players and former players living away from home. There were also people not closely connected to the club who took tickets and sold them to acquaintances and family members.  To everyone who sold tickets we are deeply indebted. Your work has been immensely important in bringing our great dream to fruition. Buíochas freisin do na daoine go léir a cheannaigh na ticéid. €100 is a lot of money to a lot of people. However it was pleasing to see the amount of people who bought tickets or shares in tickets. Many households too bought multiple tickets; there were households who bought as many as ten tickets. The level of goodwill, even far beyond the bounds of the parish was heartening. On Saturday night there was immense relief that the club’s greatest venture of this nature had gone off so successfully. Ba mhaith linn ar mbuíochas a ghabháil do na daoine go léir a chabhraigh linn san fheachtas seo.

Bás Tomás Ó Ríordáin agus Tony McGowan

It was an extraordinary coincidence that two of the central figures in Leitrim GAA over the last fifty years should die within the same twenty-four hours last week. Both men were at the helm during Leitrim’s greatest footballing periods, the 1950s and the 1990s. Tomás O Ríordáin was a very young man when he took over as Rúnaí in 1953. It is hard to envisage a Co Secretary playing football nowadays but Tomás was playing both football and hurling when he took over as Secretary in 1953. What is amazing altogether is that seventeen years later, when he retired as Co Secretary he was still playing. In between he was part of a number of football and hurling success stories at club and County level. In 1958 he played on the first St Mary’s team to win a senior championship. Tommy was also the man who, more than anyone else restarted hurling in Leitrim. In 1953 he got a senior championship going and apart from two or three seasons, there has been a senior hurling championship played in Leitrim ever since. He played on numerous successful St Mary’s senior hurling winning teams. At county level he was also part of successful Connacht Championship winning teams. He played on the Leitrim Junior team that won the Connacht Junior Football Championship in 1962. He won Connacht Junior Hurling Championships with Leitrim in 1969 and 1970 and was Captain in 1970 when they lost the All Ireland Final to Meath. As far as we know, he is the only man to have won Connacht junior football and junior hurling medals with Leitrim. The achievements of Tomás are legendary and one other memorable one was when he organise Leitrim minors to win a Connacht Minor Hurling Championship in 1965. As an administrator Tomás holds the record along with Tomás Ó Moráin as the longest serving Rúnaí Contae in Leitrim with 18 years service. Sar-Éireannach é Tomás a rinne a dhícheall i gcónaí ar son Liatroma. Tony McGowan was another of the larger than life characters to have graced the Leitrim GAA scene. Tony was one of only two people who held the two posts of Cathaoirleach and Rúnaí of Leitrim Co Board. He served nine years as Secretary and ten years as Chairman, a remarkable contribution to the GAA in Leitrim. Tony was of course at the helm during the greatest period of Leitrim’s latter day football success. He was chairman when the Connacht Senior football success came in 1994 but Tony was also there either as Rúnaí or Cathaoirleach when Leitrim’s two Connacht under 21 successes came in 1977 and in 1991. Apart from his work as Cathaoirleach and Rúnaí, Tony was involved in every aspect of club and county affairs. He took part in Scór in Music and Trath na gCeist and won a county title in Question Time in 1986 along with Brendan Canning and the late Leo Kenny. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar an mbeirt acu.

Comhbhrón

The club wishes to express sympathy to the Brady Family, Aghadark on the death of Gerry’s brother in Longford. Playing Statistics Last year we compiled statistics about the number of games played by each adult player during the course of the year. This year we have now done the same. In 2006 a total of 59 players played at least one adult game for the club. In 2007 a total of  62 played at least one game. The number who played the recommended 20 game per year was down from seven in 2006 to three in 2007.  There were seven players who had played in 2006 but did not play any game in 2007. These were: Brian Breen, John Galligan, Conor Harte, Shane Harte, Conor Mahon, Kevin McIntyre and Padraig McKeon. On the otherhand ten new players who did not play in 2006, played at least one game in 2007. Six of these were lads who moved up to adult football for the first time. These were: Philip Farrelly, Jim McTague, Stephen Beirne, Neil Hughes, Enda Quinn and John Christie.  Four others returned to playing in 2007: Trevor Martin, Darren McGrory, Denis Dolan and Diarmuid Keegan.  The breakdown of games is as follows:

Park Development – Please Return Tickets. With the big Park Development Draw just a week away it is urgent now that everyone who has tickets should return them immediately to Anne Shanley. Anybody who has tickets, especially those players and supporters who have been given tickets to sell, please return them before Christmas so as to lessen the work to be done in the short interval after Christmas. Even if you hope to sell more around the Christmas please return what you have so as they can be accounted for. The hard work is nearly at an end so please give it that last push.

Ticket Sellers meeting

All local ticket sellers are asked to come to Smyths Siopa Tae tomorrow night, Thursday at 10.30 ahead of the Christmas Lotto. This is to do a final round up of call-backs etc.

County Selector

Best wishes to Brian Breen who has taken up a position as selector with the County Senior team. Brian was manager of the Annaduff senior team last year and was previously involved with Seán O’Heslins as a selector Lotto. Our big Christmas Lotto is in Smyth’s Siopa Ól on tomorrow Thursday night. There will be ten hampers to be won as well as 10 by €100 prizes. Ní raibh aon buaiteoir den Phota Óir ar an Luan. Winners of the prizes for people present on the night of the draw: €40, Andy Duffy. Two €20 sponsored by Terry Shortt: Mylie McKeon and Noel Sweeney. Bhuaigh na daoine seo €40: Bridie Mulligan, Carrickmakeegan, Patsy Creamer, Lahard, Ciara Creamer, Kildorragh, Bernie Beirne, Ardrum, Bláithín Sharpley, Aughayowla. Uimhreacha: 10327564 Nollaig Shona Go mbeidh Nollaig Shona ag gach duine a bhaineann le club Sheáin Uí Eislin agus tá súil againn go mbeidh muid go léir beo bríomhar ag an tráth seo an bhliain seo chughainn.

Scéalta na Seachtaine – 10 Nollaig 2007

Officers in and Officers out During the past week the Co Board and Coiste na nÓg  held their annual conventions. A number of Sean O’Heslins club members were involved in taking up new positions or retiring from them. At senior Board level, Gerry Mahon left his post as Central Council delegate after 23 years service. Andy Duffy was elected onto the CCC (County Competitions Control Committee) while Seán Ó Suilleabháin continues as Oifigeach Cultúir agus Teanga. Meanwhile at Coiste na nÓg level, Dan Gallogly was elected as Cathaoirleach of Coiste na nÓg while Walter Sharpley did not stand for re-election as Treasurer after spending five years in the position. Overall it shows the substantial involvement of the club at Co Board level

Gerry Mahon – Seirbhís fhada leis an mBord Contae

On Sunday last Gerry Mahon attended his last Convention as Central Council delegate after representing Leitrim at Croke Park level for 23 years. This was almost a record in itself as only one other man, the late Leo McAlinden from Cloone, had served a longer term in that position. However, in Gerry Mahon’s case this was only part of his involvement with the GAA at Co Board level. His first significant involvement was as Chairman of the Hurling Board, a post he held in the late 1960s and early 1970s. During this time Leitrim won the Connacht junior hurling championship twice in 1969 and 1970 and they reached the All Ireland Final in 1970, only to lose to Meath. B’é Gearóid an céad duine a cheapadh sa post mar Oifigeach Gaeilge i 1979 agus bhí sé sa phost ar feadh dhá bhliain ó 1979 go 1981. Ceann des na scéimeanna a thóg sé isteach ag an am ná málaí a chur ar fáil do gach club le hainm an chlub i nGaeilge orthu. Gerry was Leitrim’s Connacht Council delegate from 1969 to 1979 and, most significant of all, he was Chairman of the County Board from 1981 to 1984 and one of only three Ballinamore men to hold that position.. The latter year was very important as it was the Centenary year of the foundation of the GAA and included a number of significant commemorative events including the publication of the history of the GAA in Leitrim. It is interesting to recall that for a period of three years, 1982-1984, the Cathaoirleach and Rúnaí of Coiste Chontae Liatroma lived practically next door to one another, that was when Gerry Mahon was Chairman and Tommy Moran was Secretary. Gerry Mahon has of course always been active in the Seán O’Heslins club as well. His success with underage teams in the 1960s and 1970s was phenomenal. During those years he was in charge of under 12 and under 14 teams in particular and the club won everything going during those years. Ní dócha go mbeidh deireadh leis an mbaint atá ag Gearóid Ó Mathúna leis an gCumann Lúth Chleas Gael, ach caithfidh a admháil gur bheag duine a chaith tréimhse chomh fada sin i mbun oibre ar son na cúise. Gura fada buan thú a Ghearóid.

Dan Gallogly – Cathaoirleach Coiste na nÓg

Dan Gallogly has taken over the position of Chairman of Coiste na nÓg Liatroma after Jimmy McNama stepped down from the position. Dan had been Vice Chairman for the past three years. Interestingly he is the first Ballinamore man to hold this position. Best wishes to Dan in his new post.

Young Hurler of the Year

Comhghairdeas to Morgan Quinn who has been selected as Young Hurler of the Year for 2007. Morgan was an outstanding member of our under 16 team which won the under 16 championship this year. Comhghairdeas do Morgan ceann des na hiomáinithe is fearr atá sa chontae faoi láthair.

Lotto

Next week we will have two Lotto nights. The regular Lotto will be on Monday night in the Heritage Bar and our Christmas Lotto will be in Smyths Siopa Ól on Thursday of next week. Mar sin beidh dhá oíche lotto againn. Pota Oir €4,000. Ní raibh aon buaiteoir den Phota Oir ar an Luan seo caite.. Winner of the prizes for people present on the night of the draw: Padraig Seosamh MacLochlainn €40. Buidéal uisce beatha sponsored by Freddie Walsh: Brid Sullivan. Bhuaigh na daoine seo €40. Laura Creamer, Kiltyhugh, Conor and Eoin McHugh, Gerard Farry, Padraig Seosamh MacLochlainn, Diarmuid Martin.

AGM Report

The AGM was held in the Community Centre on Sunday. Cathaoirleach, Adrian MacGabhann, outlined the high points of the year, the hosting of Féile, the success of the junior ladies, Aisling Maxwell reaching the All Ireland Finals in Scór na nÓg and the biggest venture of all, the continuing Park Development. Many of those present talked about the need for a big push on ticket sales before the Christmas and the need to get all the tickets in. Outgoing Rúnaí, Brid Ní Shuilleabháin presented a detailed report on the year’s activity. Tributes were paid to the all of the club’s players who travel from considerable distances entirely at their own expense. Cisteoir Anne Shanley presented the accounts for the year and with so much work in progress the fundraising issues dominate. There was also concern at the spiraling increase in medical expenses and the need to impress on players that procedures must be followed before incurring medical and physio costs. Concern was expressed at the influence of the GPA at national level and their stance on progressing county player issues only, while totally ignoring the fact that the majority of players are club players. There was smaller attendance than usual at our AGM on Sunday last with 37 present. Overall it was disappointing to see so few players in attendance, no ladies footballers at all, and just one underage player. There are two changes in the officer line-up: Alan Ó Bruacháin takes over as Rúnaí from Bríd Ní Shuilleabháin, who did not go forward this year. Ronan O’Rourke stepped down as Registrar and is replaced by Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin. The Executive Committee has yet to be completed with places for the incoming Insurance Officer and Scór Officer. The following are the Officers for 2008: Uachtaráin: Hugh McTague Snr. Leas-Uachtaráin: John Harte, P J Dolan, Joe Gormley, George Price, An tAthair ó Dubhthaigh, Sean Kavanagh, Paddy Smith, Andy Duffy, Paddy Dolan. Cathaoirleach: Adrian Smith, Leas Cathaoirleach: Peter Reynolds. Rúnaí: Alan Banks, Cisteoir: Anne Shanley, Cláiritheoir: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin.

Park Development

The club is delighted with the reception our ticket sellers are getting in all of the surrounding parishes to our Park Development Draw. At this stage sellers are calling to houses in Carrigallen, Newtowngore, Drumshanbo, Cloone, Mohill, Kiltubrid, Aughavas and areas of Cavan around Bawnboy, Killeshandra, Ballyconnell, Templeport etc. It is great to see the courtesy with which they are received. We must also pay tribute to our ticket sellers who are traveling through the country on dark nights in the cold and wet at times. Míle buíochas daoibh go léir. We would ask sellers who have tickets sold in other places to send them in to Anne Shanley as soon as possible.

Comhbhrón

Scéalta na Seachtaine – 26 Samhain 2007

AGM on Sunday –  Please be there

The most important gathering of the year is on Sunday with the club AGM in the Community Centre starting at 3.00. We ask all club members, players and supporters to be there. The club is currently involved in the biggest development ever undertaken by a Leitrim club and indeed possibly the biggest development in Connacht at the moment. The club has a huge range of activity with adult and underage teams in football, and also hurling, ladies teams at all levels and participation in so many events. The AGM is for everyone, players, team mentors, parents of players, supporters etc. The ladies teams are now entirely part of the club and we ask ladies players, mentors, etc to attend also. It is essential that everyone interested attend. Ná déan dearmad air. Fixture The final game of the year for Sean O’Heslins is a Division 3 game against Allen Gaels in Drumshanbo on Sunday. At the time of writing the likely time is 12.00.

Minors Lose in Final

Disaster! This was disaster on a grand scale. Oughteragh Gaels, overwhelming favourites going into the final, but on a day when nothing went right, they lost by 1-5 to 1-4. Two years ago Sean O’Heslins won the under 16 Championship on their own, while the combined strength of Aughawillan and Drumreilly didn’t even win the 13-a-side. Now in 2007 add in a number of very strong Aughnasheelin players and it looked a virtual certainty that Oughteragh Gaels would win handsomely. Ach níl mar a siltear bítear! The absence of the injured Gavin Sammon was a first blow. Then the injury to Wayne McKeon before half time was another serious blow. However it was a fluky goal with less than five minutes remaining that stole it. The match itself, on a wet drizzly day was never good. At half time Oughteragh Gaels led by 1-4 to 0-2 and amazingly they didn’t score in the second half. Garadice Gaels were coming into the game before half-time and missed a few chances. They also missed a few in the second half but it looked as if Oughteragh Gaels would win until the goal came. It was a day when Garadice Gaels fought for everything and certainly upset the odds. Congratulations to them and well done on taking the title. Final score 1-5 to 1-4. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Paddy McManus, David Leyden, Paul Earley, Enda Quinn, Seán McWeeney, Neil Hughes, Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon (1-2), Brendan Mulvey, Shane Murphy, John Christie, Michael Costello, Damien Gilheaney (0-2), Fergal Earley. Sub Matthew Murphy for N Hughes.

Under 21s Lose in semi final

What a weekend it turned out to be for Garadice Gaels. Having lost the Minor Final on Saturday they faced into the under 21 semi final depleted not only in players but also in morale. However, unlike the minor game this turned out to be a very good game with two very committed teams. The absence of the injured Wayne McKeon and Fergal Earley, who had been sent off on the Saturday were severe blows. Gavin Sammon did come on in the second half despite his recent injury. However, it must be said Drumkeerin played excellently and fully deserved their victory and we wish them best of luck in the final. At half time Oughteragh Gaels led by 1-7 to 1-5 and, like the day before, looked to be in a good position. However Drumkeerin played better in the second half and won by 1-12 to 1-10. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe McGirl, Kevin Prior, Joe Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, Liam Ferguson, Philip Murphy, Fergal McManus, Jim McTague, Shane Murphy (1-0), Cathal Egan (0-2), Vincent Mulvey, Brendan Mulvey (0-1), James McWeeney (0-5), Damien Gilheaney (0-2). Subs: Enda Quinn for Joe Murphy, Gavin Sammon for Brendan Mulvey.

Wayne McKeon – Best wishes

Best wishes to Wayne McKeon for a speedy recovery from injury sustained on Saturday. The loss of Wayne was such a huge blow to our chances and what a sad sight it was to see the ambulance take Wayne to hospital just as the winning goal was struck. The value of Wayne to the team was never more evident than the fact that we didn’t get a score in the second half. Best wishes Wayne and we hope to see you back in the colours in the spring. Our thanks to Marie Quinn from Garadice Gaels for her medical help on the field after Wayne’s injury.

Scór na nÓg

Scór na nÓg is on this weekend and our competitors will be taking part in Ballinamore on Saturday. Tosnóidh sé ag 6.00in.

Sarah McLoughlin – All Star

Congratulations to Sarah McLoughlin on being selected on the 2008 Ladies All Stars. This is a great honour for Sarah and her entire family. All-star awards for Leitrim are a rare thing. In men’s football only two Leitrim players have ever received All Star awards. In ladies football it is almost as rare. Sarah was selected in the half forward line and fully deserved her award for her outstanding display in the All Ireland final not to mention other games along the way. Sarah’s three brothers Thomas, Paul and Patrick play for our senior team at the present time. Peter of course also played for the club and still plays in England. Youngest brother, David, stars for our underage teams. Sarah plays her football for the Aughawillan club and she has of course represented Seán O’Heslins in Scór na nÓg and won an All Ireland in Novelty Act a few years ago. The entire family including parents PJ and Marge have contributed enormously to the club and no one deserves the award better than Sarah. Comhghairdeas ar an gradam mór. The Seán O’Heslins ladies team and management would also like to extend their congratulations.

Park Development

The most important team in the club at present is the team of ticket promoters who are doing the roads of South Leitrim and West Cavan on a nightly basis selling tickets. Wonderful work has already been done but there is still a lot left to do. Paddy O’Connor has now taken on the job of coordinating the organisation of ticket sellers. If anyone is free on a given night to go out selling and they want to find a second person to go, please ring Paddy and he will sort it out. While we have a good team we could do with more subs, so if anyone would like to give a help even for a few nights please let Paddy know.

Club Jackets for Youngsters for Christmas

The is a limited supply of club jackets in small sizes for children available and they would be very suitable for Christmas presents. If you wish to get some please contact Adrian Smith or Anne Shanley immediately.

Oughteragh Gaels win in Under 21 quarter final In their first outing in the under 21 Championship Oughteragh Gaels had a good win over Camber Gaels, the Aughavas/Cloone combination. It wasn’t easy at all, especially in the first half and Camber Gaels led early on. Points came from Wayne McKeon and a free from James McWeeney but it wasn’t until a good goal scored by Shane Murphy that Oughteragh Gaels went ahead. James McWeeney and Shane Murphy got other points to lead by 1-4 to 0-6 at half time. Whatever happened to them, Camber Gaels got only one point in the second half and Oughteragh Gaels got eight and it was clear-cut in the end. James McWeeney was in accurate form from frees and he scored five, and the other three came from Wayne McKeon, Fergal McManus and Liam Ferguson. It finished 1-12 to 0-7. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Murphy, David Leyden, Joe McGirl, Philip Murphy, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Kevin O’Connor, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Fergal McManus (0-1), James McWeeney (0-7), Jim McTague, Vincent Mulvey, Shane Murphy (1-1), Darren McGrory, Fergal Earley. Sub: Kevin Prior for Joe Murphy.

Final League Fixture

Our Junior A team play their final league fixture in Drumshanbo in Division 3 on Sunday at 2.00pm

Stand Development

Sales are progressing both locally and farther afield. Tickets have now been sent to many players and former players and we would ask all of those who have received tickets to do their best to sell them fairly quickly either in shares or whole tickets. There are only about six weeks left before Christmas so time is moving on.

Final Game in Division 4 League

Our Junior A team played their final league game of 2007 in the Park on Sunday. It was good to see two teams taking the field on a fine Sunday afternoon, although neither team had anything to gain or lose. We were behind by 3-4 to 0-2 at half time but the score did not give an accurate reflection of the state of play.  In the second half we came back with goals from Sean McCartin and Diarmuid Keegan but Allen Gaels got a further goal to finish it. It ended 4-7 to 2-6. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Enda Quinn, Francis Dolan, Trevor Martin, Kevin O’Connor, Freddie Walsh, Anthony Curran, Wayne McKeon (0-1), Adrian Murphy, Seán McCartin (1-2), Jim McTague (0-1), Stephen Beirne, Daryl McFarland (0-1), Diarmuid Keegan (1-0), Peter Reynolds (0-1).

Give us a hand with the Stand We are making great progress with ticket selling but we need your help to achieve our target of 2,500 ticket sales. We are asking any club member or supporter who could sell one, two, three or more tickets to family members, work colleagues or acquaintances to contact us immediately. Having covered the Ballinamore area and the surrounding parishes we need to extend sales further afield. There are people who have brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts etc living away from Ballinamore who would possibly buy a ticket or share in a ticket. Maybe you could get a few people at work or elsewhere to share a ticket. If you can help in any such way please contact Tommy Moran, Anne Shanley or Brid Sullivan immediately. We have only about five weeks of selling time left to Christmas and we need to reach our target sales. Please do whatever you can. Fixtures.  Progress on the Stand Tickets for the big Park Development Draw are now being sold in areas outside of the town and we would like to thank all of the people in Aughnasheelin, Fenagh, Aughawillan, Drumreilly etc for supporting our draw. Ticket sellers have been delighted with the response they have received and the support from local clubs will be a big help in completing the major development of the Park.

Division 2 for another year

The results of the final games in Division 2 have determined that we will remain in Division 2 for another year at least. We have been fairly unlucky over the past three seasons. Losing out on scoring difference this year. Last year we lost in a play-off to Manorhamilton which went to extra time and a fluke goal in the last minute beat us by a point. A year earlier we lost to Aughawillan in the final game. However, for the past two years it was an earlier defeat which proved the difference. Last year we lost by a point to Glenfarne/Kilty on a wet November morning in Dowra. We should have won that game but instead we lost and ended up in a play-off. This year our fate in Division 2 was decided on a Saturday evening in Cloone last July. We were two points up and the time up. However, Cloone got two points in the six minutes of added time played and it ended up a draw. B’fhéidir go n-éireoidh níos fearr linn an bhliain seo chugainn.

Burn-out how are you!!

There is a lot of talk about burn-out those times but it wont affect any of our players this year anyway. Our seniors had their first game this year on 23 April and their last game on 14 October, so if the same starting date operates for next year’s leagues, there will be no competitive game for the seniors for over 6 months. Ironically, we weren’t finished in the league last year until the end of January but a number of factors speeded up the competitions this year. The fact that Leitrim were not in the Tommy Murphy Cup was a big addition. Hard to believe that Wicklow are now looking to allow teams to take part in Tommy Murphy and the qualifiers. Another factor was the playing of the shields without county players which gave more games earlier in the summer. The final factor was the use of scoring difference instead of play-offs, which speeded up the completion of the leagues. Overall there has been a great improvement in the running of competitions and great credit is due to the CCC committee and it is great to see all fixtures will be completed before Christmas this year. However, a six-month’s break is a bit worrying in other respects. Fixtures. The under 21 Championship starts on Saturday week, 10 Samhain, when Oughteragh Gaels play Camber Gaels in Fenagh at 3.00. This is a quarter final. We have just two league fixtures left. In Division 4 we play our final game against Allen Gaels in Ballinamore on Sunday 11 Samhain at 2.00.  This team got a walk-over from Ballinaglera last Saturday. On the following Sunday, 18 Samhain, our Division 3 team play Allen Gaels in Drumshanbo at 2.00.

Ballinamore Boys school – INTO Mini Sevens Champions

For the fourth year in a row Ballinamore Boys NS has won the County INTO mini sevens. This is an outstanding achievement and it guarantees that some of the boys will play in Croke Park next year at some of the All Ireland Semi-finals. Last week they beat Kinlough, Mohill and Carrigallen and drew with Drumshanbo to win the title. The winning panel was: Daragh McNiffe, Conor Moran, Brian Banks, Luke Murphy (Capt), Dean McGovern, Evan Moran-King, Patrick Connaughton, Donal Feely, Caillin McHugh, Brian Leyden. Well done also to Noel McKeon and Seamus McTague, team mentors.

Win in Div 4 over Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher

While teams in higher divisions were opting out of league fixtures it was great to see Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher traveling to Ballinamore on Saturday, a distance of over 30 miles to play a bottom of the table Div 4 fixture. It wasn’t a bad game either on a grand evening for football. It was close in the first half and points from Stephen Beirne, Anthony Curran, Adrian Murphy and two from Sean McCartin, one a free, left us 0-5 to 0-3 up. Then Darren McGrory was introduced and got a good goal to put us five points up at half time. Adrian Smith pointed two early frees, Shane Murphy got two points, Wayne McKeon got another and our final score was an Adrian Murphy goal to leave it 2-10 to 1-7 at the finish. Foireann: Darren Reynolds, Kevin O’Connor, Kevin Prior, Trevor Martin, Neil Hughes, Jim McTague, Philip Murphy, Adrian Smith (0-2), Wayne McKeon (0-2), Shane Murphy (0-2), Adrian Murphy (0-1), Alan Prior, Sean McCartin (0-2), Anthony Curran (0-1), Stephen Beirne (0-1). Subs Darren McGrory (1-0), Michael Costello.

Managers of Teams – Reports

All managers of teams, adult, underage, ladies, scór etc are asked to have their report on the year’s activities for the Club Rúnaí within the next couple of weeks. Under 16 girls beaten in Semi-final  The under 16 girls played Kiltubrid in the semi-final on Friday last in Ballinamore. This proved to be a step too far for the girls as Kiltubrid seemed to be the stronger team and were in control throughout. In fairness to the O’Heslins girls they never gave up to the end. We would like to thank all the girls who turned out for the game. Kiltubrid now meet Aughawillan in the final. We wish both teams the best of luck. This brings the curtain down on ladies football for the year. We would like to thank all the girls who came out to train and play for the club throughout the year and hope to see them all out again next year. Foireann: Niamh Smith, Emma Reynolds (Capt), Gillian Leyden, Róisín McTague, Katie Duignan, Ciara O’Dowd, Deborah Gilheany, Sinéad Flynn, Phillipa O`Reilly, Sinéad Gormley, Ciara Martin. Many thanks to Emma Reynolds who put all the match reports together on all of the ladies games throughout the year. Míle Buíochas Emma.

Ballinamore man head of Bord na Móna

Under 16 Hurlers in Connacht By virtue of being co champions our under 16s took on Castlebar Mitchell’s in the Connacht under 16 competition on Saturday, The played a right good game and it was 1-4 to 0-5 at half time. Well into the second half Colm McGirl goaled to put them one point up. However, Castlebar were fortunate to get a couple of rather easy goals and it finished 3-11 to 1-8 in the end.  “Give us a hand with the Stand” The sale of €100 tickets for the development of the stand and dressingrooms at Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin is progressing very well in the town and parish area. In fact most houses have now been visited and the response has been excellent. Ticket sellers will soon be concentrating on getting tickets to natives of the area who are now living elsewhere in Ireland or abroad. The club is also hoping that club members and supporters will sell tickets to family members, friends and business or other contacts from outside the area. This requires a major drive within the next few weeks. Anyone who would like to help with selling tickets please contact Adrian Smith, Brid Sullivan, Anne Shanley or Tommy Moran. Henning is no relation of Adrian, Cyril, Ciaran or any of the Schmidts in Ballinamore but he collects jerseys. Anyway, an old Seán O’Heslin’s jersey was mailed to Henning and he, in turn, has sent us on a German jersey and two others from what we presume are local clubs of some sort or other.

Seniors beat St Mary’s Victory over St Mary’s by seven points in the Division 2 league fixture on Saturday last puts us in a very strong position for promotion to Division 1 for 2008. Our final fixture is against Annaduff’s second team and a victory in this game will almost certainly guarantee us promotion. Saturday’s defeat of St Mary’s was fairly clear-cut. . In the first half Finnian Sharpley and James McWeeney got two points each and Wayne McKeon, Anton Arandelovic and Rory O’Rourke got one each. It was 0-7 to 0-3 at half time. In the second half James McWeeney got two, Patrick McLoughlin, Rory O’Rourke, Wayne McKeon, Anton and Finnian got one each. It finished 0-14 to 0-7. Overall the result was never in doubt and now it is on to the final fixture against Annaduff. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson, Ciaran Murray, David Duignan, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Thomas McLoughlin, John McWeeney, Patrick McLoughlin (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-3), Wayne McKeon (0-2), Rory O’Rourke (0-2), James McWeeney (0-4).

Juniors lose to Annaduff

It was a case of top of the table playing the bottom team and it looked that way all through on Sunday morning. Apart from that it was a poor performance riddled with mistakes, bad passing etc. However, it was a lovely morning and it was a game of football for those who turned out. Annaduff established an early lead and were 1-8 up before we got started. Then two goals from Daryl McFarland and Michael Costello got it back to five but that was as good as it got. Sean McCartin pointed a free and it was 2-10 to 2-1 at half time. Shane Murphy got two points in the second half but it finished 3-20 to 2-3. We have three games left in this division, against Allen Gaels, Glenfarne/Kilty and Ballinaglera and thankfully none of them are near the top of the table. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Trevor Martin, Francis Dolan, Joe Murphy, Enda Quinn, Freddie Walsh, Neil Hughes, Jason Kellett, Kevin O’Connor, John Christie, Stephen Beirne, Michael Costello (1-0), Daryl McFarland (1-0), Seán McCartin (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-2). Text messages

Last weekend thirty text messages were sent out to players for the Division 4 match in Annaduff. Seven players replied that they could not be there. Just 15 players turned up on Sunday morning. Our thanks to those 22 players who either made themselves available on Sunday morning or who indicated they could not be there. However, our problem is with the 8 who did not turn up or did not text back to say they were not coming. The reality is that if a team manager does not get a text back we have to presume you are coming. Lets do better for the next fixture.

Hurlers Lose Senior Semi Final

Despite putting up a brave effort we failed once again to dislodge St Mary’ in the county senior hurling final. The first half was saw us going in level at half time, 0-6 apiece and we deserved to be in that position. It wasn’t for want of effort in the second half either but St Mary’s greater experience and greater level of preparation carried them through. In the first half St Mary’s went three points ahead at one stage but by half time we had pulled it back with all of our six points coming from Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin frees. However we just were not able to keep in the game to the same extent in the second half and while St Mary’s got eleven points our only reply was another pointed free and Trevor Martin got our final point, and our only one from play, in the final minutes. There were also a couple of pointable frees in the final minutes when trying for goals were our only chance so in reality the margin could have been a couple of points less. Final score was 0-17 to 0-8 There were some great displays and Gavin Brennan deservedly got the Man of the Match award after the game. Denis Dolan made some great saves in goal and Kevin McGrath, Seamus Mallon and John McGuinness were also good in defence. Cathal McCrann and Phil McGuinness played well at midfield, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin kept Ballinamore in the game with his accuracy from frees and Adrian Smith and Trevor Martin were best in attack. Overall what militates against us is lack of match practice. The fact that none of those playing on Saturday played county hurling this year left us at a disadvantage. Indeed at least half a dozen of our players would make the county team if they made themselves available. We wish St Mary’s the best of luck in the Connacht Championship, for what is their ninth time in a row. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Seán Costello, Gavin Brennan, Kevin McGrath, Kevin O’Connor, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-7), Seamus Mallon, Cathal McCrann, Phil McGuinness, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Adrian Gallogly, Trevor Martin (0-1), John McGuinness, Adrian Smith, John Gilhooly. Sub Darren McGrory for John Gilhooly. Seniors beat Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher This was a highly significant win for our seniors and the margin of victory, 2-13 to 1-9 could well be the key to promotion before the year is out. Last November, with promotion beckoning, we went to Glenfarne to play the same opposition and were absolutely gutted to lose by a point. In the finish it cost us promotion. This year we took our chances and by half time led by 2-6 to 0-2. James McWeeney and David Duignan got our opening points and then Liam Ferguson got a goal. Points from Wayne McKeon, Johnny McWeeney, James McWeeney and Ronan Sharpley and then Wayne McKeon put us well ahead with a goal. Glenfarne/Kilty actually outscored us in the second half but really the outcome was never in doubt with three points from James McWeeney, two from Rory O’Rourke and one each from Wayne McKeon and Johnny McWeeney. Overall a good result with two games to go against St Mary’s and Annaduff. Good to see Seán Murray togged out again after a lengthy injury. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson (1-0), Ciaran Murray, David Duignan (0-1), Anton Arandelovic, Thomas McLoughlin, John McWeeney (0-2), Patrick McLoughlin, Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Wayne McKeon (0-2), Rory O’Rourke (0-2), James McWeeney (0-5). Sub Shane Murphy for R Sharpley.

Juniors Lose C Championship Semi Final

This defeat came as a surprise given the comprehensive nature of our victories in this championship to date. Indeed it would be fair to say we would have been favourites not only to win on Sunday but also to win out the competition. However, an outstanding final ten minutes from St Osnatts left us stranded in a game we looked like winning for long periods. In the first half we started slowly but once we got going points came from Sean McCartin (free), two from Paul Prior, Colm Brennan, Sean McCartin again and two good points from Colm Brennan. At half time we led by 0-7 to 0-5. Colm Brennan got a point and then with the sides level Freddie Walsh got a goal to put us three points up and we were looking good. Then the torrents of rain game and it seems St Osnatt’s started to play. They got a goal to put them a point up and from that to the finish they got three more points. We tried hard for a goal but all that came was a final point from Paul Prior. It finished 1-12 to 1-9. St Osnatt’s deserved to win for the way they overcame conceding the goal and we wish them the best of luck in the final. Foireann: Darren Reynolds, Enda Quinn, Francis Dolan, Gavin Brennan, Neil Hughes, Freddie Walsh (1-0), Jim McTague, Paul Prior (0-3), Aidan Galligan, Stephen Beirne, Peter Reynolds, Gordon Hughes, Seán McCartin (0-2), Adrian Murphy, Colm Brennan (0-4). Subs; Tommy McCormack for Adrian Murphy, Daryl McFarland for Seán McCartin and Diarmuid Keegan for Stephen Beirne.

Ladies Lose in Junior League Final

The Junior Sean O’Heslins ladies played Aughawillan in the 13 a side final on Sunday last in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada. This turned out to be a good game of football with two very committed teams. O’Heslins held the edge in the first half and led by 3 points. They held the lead for most of the second half until the last ten minutes when Aughawillan proved too strong and went on to win by three points. Both teams deserve a lot of credit for putting on a good display of football. This was the final game of the year for the junior girls. Next year they will be playing in Division 2 which will be a big step up. We would like to thank all the girls for their commitment throughout the year and to the supporters and everyone else involved with the girls. Team and Scorers: Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Katie Duignan, Kirby Gilgunn, Gillian Leyden, Michelle Fanning, Carmel McCartin (Capt) (1-1), Orla McWeeney, Deborah Gilheaney (1-3), Ciara O’Dowd, Caroline McGrory (1-3). Leighann Gallagher. Subs: Erin Gilheaney, Emma O’Dell, Aisling Duignan, Emma Reynolds, Aine Martin, Catherine Smith, Aoife Smith, Carol O’Connor, Kate McTague, Maeve Murphy, Róisín McTague, Sinead Flynn, Ciara Martin, Aisling Flaherty.

Under 16 Girls

The under 16 girls played Aughawillan on Wednesday in Aughawillan. Aughawillan proved too strong for the girls and were in control right through but the O’Heslins girls never gave up trying. Aughawillan won easily. Team: Niamh Smith, Róisín McTague, Lauren McGrory, Aisling Duignan, Gillian Leyden, Katie Duignan, Sinéad Flynn, Ciara O’Dowd, Deborah Gilheaney, Sinéad Gormley, Phillipa O`Reilly, Ciara Martin.

Fixtures This is a big weekend with the following fixtures. On Saturday our senior hurlers play St Mary’s in the senior hurling championship final at 3.00 in the Park. On Sunday our juniors play St Osnatts in the Junior C Championship semi-final in Ballinaglera at 12.00. On Sunday our seniors play Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher in the league in the Park at 3.30 and the junior ladies play Aughawillan in the Junior 3 league final in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada at 12.15  Senior Hurlers in County Final  Our hurlers had a dramatic win over Manorhamilton in the Senior hurling semi final in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin on Saturday. Manorhamilton would have been favourites having beaten us for the last two years. However this was a great performance and despite falling behind in the second half, we finished with the leveling point and then the wining goal both coming from Trevor Martin who had a great game. We got a great start with a goal from John Gilhooly after a minute and then a point from the same player. It was close all the way in that first half and our other two points came from frees from Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin. Ag leath-am bhí sé ar chomhscór, 1-3 an taobh. We struggled through the first twenty minutes of the second half and fell behind by three points at one stage. Three pointed frees from Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin kept us in touch and brought it back to a one point game. At this stage we missed a number of chances, more from good defensive play from Manorhamilton than anything else. A crucial factor at this stage was a number of great saves from Denis Dolan in the goal. Then when it seemed to be slipping away from us Trevor Martin leveled it with a great point and we would have settled for a draw. However Trevor wasn’t finished yet and he hit the winning goal with about three minutes left. There were some great displays all around. The six backs all played well but Gavin Brennan had an outstanding game. Midfield was good and the forwards were equally good but Trevor Martin and Adrian Smith stood out. John Gilhooly’s and Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin’s scores were also vital. Anois ar aghaidh go dtí an cluiche ceannais ar an Satharn seo chughainn. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Seán Costello, Gavin Brennan, Kevin McGrath, Kevin O’Connor, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin (0-5), Liam Ferguson, Cathal McCrann, Seamus Mallon, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Adrian Gallogly, Trevor Martin (1-1), Darren McGrory, Adrian Smith, John Gilhooly (1-1). Subs used: Denis O’Brien for John Gilhooly, Tony Meehan for Darren McGrory. Also there: Hugh Gough, Michael Rehill, Seán Moran, Paul Earley, Éamon Walsh

Juniors Win again in Championship

Our second junior team won their last ordinary game of the Junior C Championship with a 6-13 to 2-6 win over Kiltubrid. This was Kiltubrid’s first year to field a third team and they deserve full credit for fielding in this game even though their interest in the championship had ended.  Two early goals from Stephen Beirne and two more from Brian Cafferty plus a rake of points from others left us leading by 4-7 to 1-1 at half time. The second half was much the same. The backs were strong throughout, Brian Cafferty was outstanding in the middle and Stephen Beirne, Seán McCartin and Colm Brennan were scoring at will. As a result of this win we are in clear top position on one half of the draw and we now meet St Osnatts in the semi-final. Foireann: Darren Reynolds, Trevor Martin, Francis Dolan, Gavin Brennan, Neil Hughes, Freddie Walsh, Jim McTague, Aidan Galligan, Brian Cafferty (2-2), Gordon Hughes (0-1), Stephen Beirne (2-1), Seán McCartin (1-3), Colm Brennan (1-3), Adrian Murphy (0-2), Daryl McFarland (0-1). Subs : Enda Quinn and Diarmuid Keegan.

Ladies in Croke Park

The story of the year in Leitrim GAA is undoubtedly the victory of the ladies in the All Ireland intermediate final in Croke Park on Sunday. It was a wonderful occasion and a credit to the team and their mentors. Their visit to Ballinamore on Monday night was also a wonderful and memorable occasion. A special comhghairdeas to the Player of the Match, Sarah McLoughlin who was outstanding throughout. Sarah who plays her football with Aughawillan ladies was Ballinamore’s only representative on the team. Sarah of course also played camogie for the short few years when the game was played in the school. It wasn’t Sarah’s first All Ireland medal for she also won an All Ireland Scór na nÓg All Ireland in Novelty Act with Seán O’Heslins in 2001. Comhghairdeas do gach duine a bhí páirteach sa bhua iontach seo.  Under 16 Girls Football  The Seán O’Heslins girls under 16s played Aughnasheelin/Fenagh on Tuesday last in Aughnasheelin. The girls got off to a good start with a couple of early points. Goals followed from Deborah Gilheany, Katie Duignan, Ciara O’Dowd to leave the girls ahead at half time. In the second half Aughnasheelin/Fenagh came out more determined and got an early goal to bring them back into the game. The girls regrouped again and a goal from Ciara O’Dowd and a few more points saw the girls home by 4-10 to 1-7. On Thursday we were meant to play Annaduff but they conceded the game. Last night, Tuesday the girls were due to play Aughawillan. Team and Scorers on Tuesday week: Niamh Smith, Emma Reynolds, Lauren McGrory (0-2), Róisín McTague, Katie Duignan (1-2), Gillian Leyden, Aisling Duignan, Deborah Gilheaney (1-4), Ciara O’Dowd (2-2), Sinéad Flynn, Sinéad Gormley, Phillipa O`Reilly, Ciara Martin.

Under 16 Football

The under 16s lost to a strong Carrigallen team in the Park on Friday. Early on we were close enough and in fact were leading until Carrigallen got a lucky goal. It was 2-7 to 0-6 at half time and it finished 5-8 to 0-9. Foireann: Calum Taylor, John Fanning, Matthew Murphy, Eoin McHugh, Shane McWeeney (0-1), Jack Cullen, Conor McTague (0-2), Éamon Walsh (0-3), Mark McGrory (0-1), Shane Moran (0-1), Andrew Burns, Brian Beirne, Séamus Donnelly. Ladies win Reynolds Hardware Junior B Championship

The Seán O’Heslins ladies played Fenagh on Saturday last in Kiltubrid in the junior Championship Final. The girls covered themselves in glory after a pulsating hour’s football when they defeated Fenagh. This game had everything that is good in Gaelic football: great scores, near misses, and total commitment. This was a great achievement for the girls as the club was only formed in 2003. The girls played with the wind and got off to a great start with a well-taken goal from Carmel McCartin. Further goals from Deborah Gilheany and Caroline McGrory and well-taken points left us ahead by 3-7 to 0-1 at half time. The only black spot was the loss of captain, Orla McWeeney through injury and she was replaced by Erin Gilheany. Fenagh had the benefit of the very strong wind in the second half and they came out with all guns blazing. Although the girls picked off some nice points Fenagh had pulled it back to five points before Caroline McGrory scored a late goal to see the girls home on a final scoreline of  4-12 to 2-9. Two great saves from Niamh Smith in the second half were a great help. There were great scenes of excitement at the final whistle as this was the girls’ third year in a row in the final having lost the last two. Our captain Orla McWeeney was presented with the cup by Ladies Co Board Cathaoirleach, Geraldine Creamer, and then back to Ballinamore to start the celebrations with a parade through the town followed by a meal in Gay Prior’s. The girls would like to thank their supporters and would like to thank their sponsors, Leitrim Steel. Congratulations also to the team’s mentors: Seán Reynolds and Aisling Flaherty who have stood behind this team through thick and thin over the last few years. The girls have yet to play the league final against Aughawillan on 30 September so we would like to ask supporters to come out again to support the girls. Foireann: Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Katie Duignan (0-1), Kirby Gilgunn, Gillian Leyden, Michelle Fanning, Carmel McCartin (1-3), Orla McWeeney (Capt.), Deborah Gilheany (1-3), Ciara O’Dowd, Caroline McGrory (2-1), Leighann Gallagher. Subs: Erin Gilheany, Emma O’Dell, Aisling Duignan, Emma Reynolds. Áine Martin, Catherine Smith, Aoife Smith, Carl O’Connor, Kate McTague, Maeve Murphy, Róisín McTague, Sinéad Flynn, Ciara Martin.

Under 16 Hurlers win Championship

Our under 16 hurlers won the under 16 Championship for the second year in succession with a good win over St Mary’s in Páirc Seán MacDiarmada on Saturday. The first half was close as we played against the wind. However as time went on in the second half  the boys built up a commanding lead and won by 3-11 to 1-6 in the end. It was a great overall performance and at the finish the Cathaoirleach of Coiste Iomána Liatroma, Paddy Phelan, presented the cup to the captain Séan McWeeney. Foireann: Joe Earley, Matthew Murphy, Paddy McManus, Shane Moran, Séamus Donnelly, Seán McWeeney, James Gallagher, Morgan Quinn (0-7), Keith Boyle (1-1), Mark McGrory, Shane Flanagan (0-1), Éamon Walsh (0-2), Dean Creaven (1-0), Colm McGirl (1-0), Conal McManus. Subs David Gallagher, Aidan Dolan, Noel Plunkett, Ryan Creamer, Gavin Boyle, Brian Boyle, Seán Fox, Ciaran Gilheaney, Cian Reynolds, Devin Quinn. Well done also to team mentors Paddy O’Connor and Diarmuid McCaffrey

Captains from the same house

It was a good evening on the Saturday for the McWeeney household from Miskaun. At 2.00pm the Ballinamore under 16 hurlers played the final in Páirc Seán and won. Their captain was Seán McWeeney. At 4.00 the Seán O’Heslins girls played and won the Junior championship in Kiltubrid and Seán’s sister Orla McWeeney was captain of the ladies. We wish a quick recovery to Orla who was injured in the girls’ match.

Juniors beat Dromahair in Div 3

This was certainly a surprise result on Saturday last. A win would have put Dromahair on top of the table but not alone did we win but it was a most comprehensive win by 4-12 to 0-7. It didn’t look that way early on as Dromahair led by 0-4 to 0-2 with about twenty minutes gone. All we had to show for twenty minutes was two points from Anthony McTague. There were misses from both sides but the change started when Ronan O’Rourke finished a good move for a goal. Minutes later we got a penalty which Wayne McKeon converted. It was 2-2 to 0-4 at half time but we had to face the wind in the second half. What a transformation the second half was. Adrian Smith got a point, James McWeeney pointed a free and then the move which finished it. A long ball in and Adrian Smith punched it. It deceived the goalie and ended up in the top left corner of the net. Dromahair were now struggling. Points from James McWeeney (3) Rory O’Rourke two from long range, Paul McLoughlin, Wayne McKeon and Philip Murphy were followed by a late goal from Anthony McTague to leave seventeen points in it at the finish. The scale of victory was certainly a surprise. Ray Logan was in brilliant form in the centre field. The backs were solid to a man, and the forwards just ran rings round the opposition. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Kevin O’Connor, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Anthony Curran, Alan Prior, Wayne McKeon (1-1), Philip Murphy, Ray Logan, Paul McLoughlin, Ronan O’Rourke (1-2), Rory O’Rourke (0-2), Anthony McTague (0-2), James McWeeney (0-3), Adrian Smith (1-1), Shane Murphy. Sub Adrian Gallogly for Ronan O’Rourke.

Under 16 Girls football

The under 16 girls played Cloone/Gortletteragh on Tuesday of last week and proved to be too strong for the girls in the first round of the championship. The played Aughnasheelin on last night Tuesday. They play Annaduff on this Thursday in the Park at 6.45 and the play Aughawillan on Tuesday next. Foireann: Niamh Smith, Emma Reynolds (Capt), Lauren McGrory, Róisín McTague, Katie Duignan, Gillian Leyden, Ciara O’Dowd, Deborah Gilheaney, Aisling Duignan, Sinead Flynn, Ciara Martin, Sinead Gormley, Phillipa O`Reilly.

Seniors Beat Ballinaglera

A win over Ballinaglera was important and a good win was equally important because the chances are that promotion could go down to scoring difference before the year is out. We got both on Saturday and won by 2-14 to 1-4. The scoreline dosn’t do justice to Ballinaglera because they were in the game for the first 40 minutes but the turning point was a good move which Wayne McKeon finished to the net. We got a great start with a goal from Anton Arandelovic in a minute and a point from Wayne McKeon shortly after that. Ballinaglera came back with three unanswered points and they missed two goal chances. Matters got worse from a Ballinamore point of view when Ballinaglera got a goal to go ahead by 1-3 to 1-2. However we finished the half better with two good points from Wayne McKeon and another from Anton to lead by 1-5 to 1-3 at half-time. Finnian Sharpley got an early point before we got the goal which settled everything. For the final quarter we controlled the game with four points from Finnian Sharpley (I free), two from Anton Arandelovic (1 free), and one each from Wayne McKeon and Ronan Sharpley left us well ahead. We have three games left, against Glenfarne/Kilty, Annaduff and St Mary’s and we are currently in third place. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Anton Arandelovic (1-3), Thomas McLoughlin, Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Wayne McKeon (1-4), Ronan O’Rourke, Finnian Sharpley (0-6), Rory O’Rourke, James McWeeney. Sub: Shane Murphy for Ronan O’Rourke.

Juniors qualify for “C” Championship semi Final

Our juniors beat Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher to qualify for the C Championship semi final. They started well on Sunday and built up a 0-6 to 0-1 lead. Two points from Peter Reynolds, and one each from Brian Cafferty, Adrian Murphy and Sean McCartin. The sixth was a brilliant point from a 50 by Jim McTague. Then disaster struck when Glenfarne/Kilty got two goals to take the lead. After the goals Adrian Murphy got a point to leave it 2-2 to 0-7 for Glenfarne at half time. This scoreline was no reflection of the game as we had hit eight wides. Despite playing against the wind in the second half we dominated for most of it and points from Sean McCartin, Paul Prior (free), Adrian Murphy, Brian Cafferty, Paul Prior and Colm Brennan in that order put us comfortably in front. Then Jim McTague struck a great goal and Colm Brennan got another point to leave it 1-14 to 2-4 at the finish. The backs played well and Francis Dolan, Jim McTague and Enda Quinn were exceptional. Brian Cafferty covered acres of ground and Adrian Murphy was the outstanding forward with Stephen Beirne, Peter Reynolds and Sean McCartin not far behind. Foireann: Darren Reynolds, Ciaran Maxwell, Francis Dolan, Trevor Martin, Enda Quinn, Freddie Walsh, Jim McTague (1-1), Brian Cafferty (0-2), Paul Prior (0-2), Stephen Beirne, Peter Reynolds (0-2), Sean McCartin (0-2), Tommy McCormack, Adrian Murphy (0-3), Daryl McFarland. Subs: Gavin Brennan for T Martin, Aidan Galligan for T McCormack, Colm Brennan (0-2) for D McFarland, Gordon Hughes for P Prior, David Earley for P Reynolds.

Ladies Football

Our Ladies team played Aughnasheelin in the semi-final of the Junior B Championship on Sunday last in ideal conditions in Fenagh. They got off to a great start with two early points and a few goals from Leighann Gallagher, Ciara O’Dowd, Caroline McGrory and Michelle Fanning. Half Time Score was 5-9 to 0-1. Further goals in the second half from Leighann Gallagher & Caroline McCartin and some superb long range points rounded off a great display, the final score was 7-16 to 1-3 which did not do Aughnasheelin justice as they fought hard and never gave up trying. Probably our best performance of the year so far. We now play Fenagh in the county final. Team & Scorers, Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan 0-1, Gillian Leyden, Michelle Fanning 1-1, Orla McWeeney 0-1, Carmel McCartin 1-1, Deborah Gilheaney, 0-3, Ciara O’Dowd, 2-2, Caroline McGrory 1-3, Leighann Gallagher 2-4, Emma O’Dell, Erin Gilheaney, Aisling Duignan, Emma Reynolds, Aine Martin, Carol O’Connor, Catherine Smith, Aoife Smith, Kate McTague, Roisin McTague, Sinead Flynn & Ciara Martin. The final takes place this Saturday at 4.00pm in Kiltubrid against Fenagh, your support for the girls would be appreciated.

Under 12s lose in Final

Our under 12s were beaten by Glencar/Manorhamilton in the15 a side under 12 championship final on Friday week. The final score was 4-5 to 1-7 which didn’t do justice to the Ballinamore boys efforts. At half time it was level at 1-3 apiece. Manor got the goals and that was the difference in the end. Cian McCaffrey got four points, Luke Murphy got the goal and Patrick Connaughton got two points. Gerard Curran also got a point when he came in as a sub. Foireann: Fergal Curran, Niall McGovern, Conor Moran, Brian Leyden, Conor O’Brien, Brian Banks, Conor Maxwell, Keelan McHugh, Anthony Maguire (Capt), Donal Feely, Dean McGovern, Cian McCaffrey (0-4), Luke Murphy (1-0), Patrick Connaughton (0-2), Evan Moran. Subs used: Gerard Curran (0-1), Mark O`Reilly, Peter Reynolds.

Comhghairdeas do Churaidh Liatroma

Congratulations to St Mary’s on winning the Senior Championship and our neighbours Drumreilly on winning the Intermediate. It is also interesting that Leitrim is, we think, the first to have their 2007 county senior football championship completed with the exception of Kilkenny.

Ladies in Junior Championship Semi final

Seán O’Heslins ladies played Gortletteragh in the Peter Reynolds Hardware Junior B Championship on Sunday last in Fenagh in the first round of the championship. This was never going to be an easy game as Gortletteragh had already beaten the girls by a point in the league. On the day, the O’Heslins girls proved too strong for their opponents. They got off to a good start with two early points but Gortletteragh came back with a goal. Shortly after Caroline McGrory got the first of her three goals. This settled the girls and a further two goals from Caroline left the score 2-8 to 1-3 at half time. Early in the second half Gortletteragh got a penalty which Niamh Smith saved, but Gortletteragh soon got a goal to bring them back into it. However goals from Leighann Gallagher and two from Ciara O’Dowd as well as some fine points left the final score 6-11 to 3-4. This was a good all round display but some work still needs to be done as they play Aughnasheelin next Sunday in the semi final in Fenagh at 12.00. The team and mentors would like to thank Séamus Reynolds of Leitrim Steel who sponsored a new set of tracksuits and a new set of jerseys for the championship for the girls. Teams and scorers: Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Emma O’Dell, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan, Michelle Fanning (0-1), Orla McWeeney (0-1), Gillian Leyden (0-1), Carmel McCartin (0-3), Leighann Gallagher (1-5), Ciara O’Dowd (2-0), Caroline McGrory (3-0), Erin Gilheany, Emma Reynolds, Catherine Smith, Carol O’Connor, Maeve Murphy, Aoife Smith, Aisling Duignan, Róisín McTague, Áine Martin, Sinéad Flynn, Ciara Martin. The Seán O’Heslin’s ladies would like to congratulate the Leitrim Ladies on reaching the All Ireland Intermediate Final.

Uimhreacha: 06325714   Scéalta na Seachtaine – 27 Lunasa 2007 Juniors Win in C Championship Our juniors made it two wins out of two in the second round of the Junior C Championship against Drumreilly on Friday evening but it was a close shave in the end. It was a good game generally and the most we got ahead was four points at one stage in the second half. However with minutes to go and us only two points ahead, we were steeped in luck when a Drumreilly forward got clean through but Darren Reynolds advanced and made a great save. The rebound went straight to another Drumreilly forward who had nobody in front of him and the goalie on the ground. However, his shot hit the upright and rolled the full length of the goals to the other side and out to safety. A goal at that stage would have spelled real trouble. In the first half Drumreilly went into an early lead with a goal from a penalty. However two pointed frees from Paul Prior, two more from play from Adrian Murphy and then we got a goal when Seán McCartin was pulled down in the square. Paul Prior made no mistake and Brian Cafferty who had come on as a sub got our last point to leave us leading by 1-5 to 1-2 at half time. In the second half we got points from Paul Prior, Brian Cafferty, John Christie and Sean McCartin before Paul Prior got the score of the game. He pointed a line ball form about 40 yards out. Stephen Beirne got our final point after Darren Reynolds’ save. It finished 1-11 to 1-9. There were some good displays but undoubtedly the man-of-the-match was Trevor Martin at corner back. He turned up everywhere and made some great sensible clearances. Kevin Prior was particularly good too but all of the backs played well. Jim McTague and Paul Prior were good at midfield. None of the forwards stood out but Brian Cafferty played well when introduced before half time. This team can win this championship but they were missing a good few from the first day and this situation will need to improve. Grated this was a Friday night game but we will need to have everyone for the next games, and then we really can go places. Foireann: Darren Reynolds, Kieran Maxwell, Francis Dolan, Trevor Martin, Enda Quinn, Kevin Prior, Neil Hughes, Paul Prior (1-4), Jim McTague, John Christie (0-1), Stephen Beirne, Seán McCartin (0-1), David Earley, Adrian Murphy (0-2), Daryl McFarland. Subs: Brian Cafferty (0-2) for D McFarland, Freddie Walsh for J Christie, J Christie for D Earley.

Oughteragh Gaels in Minor Final

Oughteragh Gaels continued their winning ways with a victory over St Mary’s in Ballinamore on Monday. This win puts them into the Minor Championship Final. Damien Gilheaney got the first two points, Wayne McKeon got another and then Fergal Earley finished for a good goal. Damien Gilheaney then got three points, the last two from frees and at half time Oughteragh Gaels led by 1-6 to 0-3 and seemed to have the betterhand of St Mary’s. However, St Mary’s got the first four scores of the second half to leave only two pints in it. The Gaels recovered their composure and points came from Wayne McKeon, Darren Reynolds, Brendan Mulvey, Damien Gilheaney and the final two from Wayne McKeon to leave victory by 1-12 to 0-9. Their final round game is against Garadice Gaels in Aughnasheelin on Friday. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Paddy McManus, David Leyden, Paul Earley, Enda Quinn, Seán McWeeney, Neil Hughes, Jim McTague, Wayne McKeon (0-4), Brendan Mulvey (0-1), John Christie, Shane McWeeney, Darren Reynolds (0-1), Damien Gilheaney (0-6), Fergal Earley (1-0). Subs: Shane Moran for S McWeeney, Stephen Beirne for J Christie.

Juniors out of A Championship

Allen Gaels won this game by 4-10 to 1-7 but, strange as it may seem, this scoreline dosn’t at all reflect the trend of this game. For the first twenty minutes O’Heslins dominated and led by 0-3 to 0-2. In the same period they shot eight bad wides and were very much on top. It looked as if time might rectify the situation but then disaster struck. Allen Gaels got a good goal chance which was blocked and after a good bit of defending a harmless chip just went over Denis Dolan’s head for a lucky goal. A Minute later two of our defenders collided as they went for a ball at the edge of the square and an Allen Gaels forward punched it home. The bottom fell out of our efforts and we were down 2-5 to 0-3 at half time. Further disaster happened within minutes of the restart when defensive lapses let Allen Gaels in for two goals and that was it. Unfortunately we started this game at a disadvantage with our two midfielders and centre half back missing from the last game. These were big gaps to fill but until the goals came we were doing well enough. Unfortunately this ends our run in the Junior A Championship. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Joe Murphy, Philip Murphy, Jim McTague, Joe McTague, Anthony Curran, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (0-1), Alan Prior, Ronan O’Rourke, Anthony McTague (0-3), Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Adrian Smith (0-2), Darren McGrory. Subs: Brian Cafferty (1-0), Paul Prior, Diarmuid Keegan.

Juniors win in C Championship

Our second junior team made a good start to the Junior C Championship with a 1-10 to 0-6 win over Eslin on Sunday. This was a fairly clear-cut win with some good scores from Seán McCartin, Tommy McCormack and Paul Prior and a goal and a point from Stephen Beirne. We will have four games in this championship with the next one on Friday evening next in Cloone. Foireann: Colm Brennan, Gavin Brennan, Francis Dolan, Diarmuid Keegan, Neil Hughes, Freddie Walsh, Brian Cafferty, Peter Reynolds, Aidan Galligan, Stephen Beirne (1-1), Paul Prior (0-2), Adrian Murphy (0-1), Sean McCartin (0-3), Tommy McCormack (0-2), Daryl McFarland. Subs: David Earley, Enda Quinn

Junior Ladies

The junior girls played their final two games in the league against Fenagh and Allen Gaels. They needed to win both games to qualify for the final. In the first game we defeated an under strength Fenagh team. The second game against Allen Gaels was much closer with the teams level with ten minutes to go. . The O’Heslins girls got two goals to win the game. This meant that if other results went in our favour we would reach the final for the third year running.  That was the way it turned out and O’Heslins now meet Aughawillan in the final with time, date and venue to be decided.

Minor Girls

The minor girls were in the championship this year along with Manorhamilton, Allen Gaels and St Josephs. They lost to Manorhamilton and St Josephs but beat Allen Gaels. The highlight of this game was the 4-7 out of 5-12 scored by Caroline McGrory. Unfortunately, for this championship we weren’t able to field a full strength teams as the girls had other commitments but this was a good experience for the girls. We would like to thank all the girls for their commitment throughout the championship. The panel was: Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Kirby Gilgunn, Gillian Leyden, Emma O’Dell, Katie Duignan, Ciara O’Dowd, Deborah Gilheaney, Erin Gilheany, Catherine Smith, Caroline McGrory, Aisling Duignan, Róisín McTague, Aoife Smith, Ciara Martin, Sinead Flynn, Louise Farry, Maeve Murphy, Kate McTague. Congratulations to all the Leaving Cert students on doing so well in their exams and best of luck in the various colleges.

Played in Croke Park

Jack Cullen and Colm O’Reilly played in the Meath colours in Croke Park on Sunday and they had a wonderful day representing Ballinamore and Leitrim. Interestingly the first time the INTO mini sevens were introduced was in 1988 and Ballinamore won the competition in Leitrim. As a result Ciaran Murray and Aidan Harte played in Croke Park at an All Ireland semi-final.

Fun Day in the Park

On one of the few good days this summer the second annual Fun Day was run in conjunction with the Festival and was a great success. Our thanks to the Leitrim GAA Golf Classic in New York and to Pat Murray in particular for their sponsorship of this event and thanks Ann Shanley, Ray O’Connor and to all who helped on the day.

Park Finance

With the club’s major fund-raising draw now launched there will be other projects to raise the necessary finance to fund the new stand and dressingrooms. One of the matters being considered at present is the raising of interest-free loans from club members and supporters. Club officials will be making details available about this project in the coming weeks.

Lost and Found

A set of car keys was lost in the Park at the over 40s game last Wednesday. A child’s watch was found in the Park also. If you have any information about either please contact Tom Burns at 087 2684321.  Pósadh Comhghairdeas to Padraig Gallagher and Frances O’Reilly who were married last weekend.

Senior out of Championship

It was a case of so near and yet so far on Saturday as Bornacoola beat us by a single point, 0-10 to 0-9. Overall it was a great performance, probably the best since we drew with Kiltubrid two years ago and especially since we were missing three key players through injury. At half time there was just one point in it and despite falling three behind we never gave up and, in the end, time just beat us. Conditions were terrible in this memorably awful summer and open football was almost impossible. Despite this defeat there certainly was great hope in this performance. We have fallen to the eventually County champions for the past two years, who knows how Bornacoola will do from here on but we wish them the best of luck in the semi-final. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Ronan Sharpley, Anton Arandelovic, John McWeeney, Ciaran Murray, Wayne McKeon, James McWeeney, Finnian Sharpley, Shane Murphy. Subs: Rory O’Rourke for John McWeeney, Ronan O’Rourke for Shane Murphy.

Big Draw

Tickets for the big draw are now out and all households in the area will be visited by club members shortly. The tickets are €100 each and there is €35,000 in prizes. We hope that everyone will help us to complete this wonderful project which will make our Park one of the finest in the Country. Oughteragh Gaels win twice in Minor Championship. Oughteragh Gaels had two comprehensive wins in the first two rounds of the Minor Championship. On Wednesday of last week they got off to a good start against Glencar/Manorhamilton. They led by 2-5 to 0-4 at half time and finished up winners by 4-19 to 1-6. The team and scorers were: Philip Farrelly, Patrick McManus, David Leyden, Paul Earley, Neil Hughes, Seán McWeeney, Enda Quinn, Jim McTague (0-5), Wayne McKeon (1-4), Brendan Mulvey (0-2), Michael Costello (1-2), John Christie, Fergal Earley (0-1), Damien Gilheaney (1-2), Shane Murphy (1-1). Subs Shane McWeeney (0-1) for F Earley, Matthew Murphy for P Earley, Stephen Beirne for D Gilheaney, Darren Reynolds for J Christie, Shane Moran for S Murphy. On Monday Oughteragh Gaels played St Francis and this was a much more severe test. St Francis started stronger and led by three points early on. The turning point came when Damien Gilheaney made a great catch near the square and was grounded for a penalty. Wayne McKeon made no mistake with the penalty and Oughteragh led by 1-5 to 0-5 at half time. A good goal from Fergal Earley early in the second half left it more difficult for St Frances and while St Frances never gave up the result was scarcely in doubt from there on. Oughteragh Gaels won by 2-11 to 0-10. The starting team was the same on Monday and Shane Moran and Matthew Murphy came on as subs. Scorers: Wayne McKeon (1-4), Fergal Earley (1-1),  Jim McTague (0-2), Brendan Mulvey, John Christie, Shane Murphy, Damien Gilheaney (0-1) each. Next game is against Garadice Gaels on Monday in Aughawillan.

Congratulations to Rory O’Rourke and Lorraine Bohan on their recent engagement and also to Paul Prior and Michelle Kelleher who also got engaged.

Ballinamore Boys in Croke Park

Ballinamore will be represented in Croke Park on Sunday when Jack Cullen and Colm O’Reilly play in the INTO mini sevens at the interval of the Meath v Cork game. It is a great honour for the boys to get the opportunity to play in Croke Park. Tá súil againn go mbainfidh Jack agus Colm taitneamh as an ócáid.

Family Fun day on Thursday in St Felim’s

The Joe McInerney Family Fun Day supported by the Leitrim GAA Golf Classic in New York will take place in St Felim’s on Thursday. There will be fun and games for all ages of children and adults, including a barbeque. All is of course free and we hope the weather is suitable. The late Joe McInerney was a great GAA man in New York and used to visit Ireland every summer around Festival time. He used to stay with Tommy and the late Bridie Moran and went to all the big GAA matches while in Ireland. He built up a great collection of GAA programmes which are now housed in the Co Library. Please note that this event will now be in St Felim’s pitch.

Ballinamore’s Limerick population rejoice

The club’s many Limerick hurling supporters ventured to the capital last Sunday to cheer on the green and white. Members of the Harte, McCaffrey, Cronin and Wisley families were in attendance to watch the magnificent display of our national game by both teams. Noise levels in the Harte household will be in the high decibels with evening practices of “Limerick your a Lady” in preparation for the big final in a few weeks time. What a game it was! Nothing in the world of sport could compare.

Premium tickets

Lines at €2 are on sale for the club’s two premium tickets for the Meath v Cork semi final in Croke Park on Sunday next. Next draw will be for the biggest game in Gaelic football in years, the clash of Dublin and Kerry on Sunday week

We hope that all our supporters will be there. Oughteragh Gaels play in the Minor Championship on this Wednesday night in Manorhamilton at 7.00pm. We expect to have a Junior C Championship game on the following weekend and we would ask all eligible players to be available for that game.

Seniors and Juniors Progress

There was progress on two fronts at the weekend with our seniors beating St Caillins and our juniors beating Aughavas in the Junior A Championship. For our seniors it was a close thing with just a point to spare over St Caillins but that point was as good as twenty and hugely significant as it guarantees us a place in senior championship football for 2008 and it also puts us into the quarter finals next Saturday. What is also interesting is that while we are secure for senior championship next year, four division 1 teams will battle it out for relegation. The junior win will very likely put us into the quarter finals of the Junior A championship also. Seniors beat St Caillins A good first half put us well on the road to victory on Saturday but a bad second half nearly let it slip. We were in control for most of the first half and John McWeeney got our first point. Thomas McLoughlin got the next and Finnian Sharpley pointed two frees. Anton Arandelovic got a point and James McWeeney pointed a free. Wayne McKeon got a goal from a penalty and a point from play and we led by 1-7 to 0-6 at half time. You would think we were going to win well at half time but the second half was anything but good. Amazingly we got just one point in the second half, and that came late in the game from James McWeeney. However it was in the end the winning score as it finished 1-8 to 0-10 and you would have to say we were lucky to got out with a win although a draw would have been enough to put us through. It wasn’t a game where anyone stood out but Paul McLoughlin played well at full back, Liam Ferguson was good in the half line, Thomas McLoughlin played well at midfield, and Finnian Sharpley tried hard in attack. While our performance was well short of the Annaduff game it still means we have a coveted quarter final spot against Bornacoola on Saturday and who knows what will happen. One significant thing about Saturday’s game is that it is a long time since a Ballinamore senior team took the field with four current minors on board. Cathain a tharla sé sin roimhe seo? Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Jim McTague, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Thomas McLoughlin (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), John McWeeney (0-1), Ronan Sharpley, Wayne McKeon (1-1), James McWeeney (0-2), Finnian Sharpley (0-2), Shane Murphy. Sub Rory O’Rourke.

Juniors win well over Aughavas

If the seniors played well in the first half and badly in the second, the juniors did the opposite on Sunday. At half time Aughavas led by 1-3 to 0-4 and things were not looking that rosy. However the second half was a different story and we completely dominated the game. Shane Ferguson got the first point of the second half, he got one in the first half also. Ronan O’Rourke pointed and then Darren McGrory got a goal which turned the game. Minutes earlier Darren was clean through but a great save from the Aughavas goalie denied him the goal. However, Darren pounced on a slip by the goalie minutes later and that put us on the high road. Darren McGrory got a further point, Anthony McTague and Jason Kellett pointed and Anthony Curran got the final two to leave us winning by 1-11 to 1-5. The key to our success in the second half was as outstanding display at midfield from Ray Logan. He won everything. Shane Ferguson and Joseph McTague stood out in defence, and Ronan O’Rourke, Anthony McTague and Anthony Curran in attack. There is a good chance this win will see us through to the quarter finals, except Aughavas beat Mohill by more than six points. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Joseph Murphy, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Kevin O’Connor, Philip Murphy, Shane Ferguson (0-2), Joe McTague, Ray Logan, Jason Kellett (0-1), Alan Prior, Ronan O’Rourke (0-2), Anthony McTague (0-2), Anthony Curran (0-3), Adrian Smith, Darren McGrory (1-1). Subs used: Aidan Galligan, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin.

Juniors lose first round of Junior A Championship

Our Juniors were beaten by Mohill in the first round of the Junior A Championship on Sunday last. This certainly was a game of two halves, for us it was a case of a good first half and a bad second half. We were generally the better team in the first half and were two points ahead for most of it and led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time. Whatever happened us in the second half is a mystery and Mohill gradually built up their lead. Two goals really killed us but there could have been more only for a couple of great saves from Denis Dolan. There were some good performances from Shane Ferguson, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin and Joe McTague in defence; Ray Logan had a great first half at midfield and Ronan O’Rourke, Adrian Gallogly and Adrian Smith in particular in attack. Overall this is a strong team and it will be no surprise if they bounce back and make the qualifying stages at least. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Joe McTague, Philip Murphy, Shane Ferguson (0-1), Anthony McTague, Jason Kellett, Ray Logan, Alan Prior (0-1), Anthony Curran, Ronan O’Rourke (0-3), Adrian Gallogly (0-3), Adrian Smith (0-1), Darren McGrory. On Monday last we had a visitor with a very historic connection to Ballinamore. Eaver McMahon and his wife, who live in England, visited the town in search of details about Eaver’s father Phil McMahon. Garda Phil McMahon, a native of Co Monaghan, was a member of the Leitrim panel that won the 1927 Connacht Championship and was living in Ballinamore at the time. He was also Treasurer of the County Board a year earlier in 1926. Amazing too that a serving Co Board Treasurer would also be a current county senior player. Phil was one of five Ballinamore club members who held the post of Co Treasurer, the others being Phil McTague (1908-1910), Hugh Maloney, Nuala’s father (1917), Brendan Burns (1973-1975) and Brendan Gormley (1985-2001). Phil McMahon was also a prominent player with Ballinamore at the time. The McMahons lived in Church St where the Health Board residence is now and Eaver was born there. The family moved to Riverstown, Co Sligo in the early 1930s. Phil McMahon died in England and is buried there. Eaver had a number of photos of his father while he was in Ballinamore and he gave copies of them to the Co Library.

 Junior Championship

Our first junior team are out on Sunday in the first round of the Junior A Championship. We play Mohill in Cloone at 3.00 on Sunday. Last year this team had a good run in the championship and in fact defeated Eslin the eventual winners of the Junior A Championship.

Senior Championship – Narrow defeat by Annaduff

Our first championship outing on Sunday was a close encounter. We could have won, we could more likely have drawn it, but in the end we lost by two points. We probably deserved a draw but nothing more. Overall it was a good performance by O’Heslins in what was a good hard fought game. Unusually for us, we missed less chances than Annaduff but there was great fight throughout the team. Admittedly, some would be happier with their performance than others, but then, if everyone played well all the time, one would never lose.  At half time we led by 0-6 to 0-5 with Finnian Sharpley pointing four frees and the first two points coming from Johnny McWeeney and David Duignan. We didn’t do as well in the second half and Annaduff got eight points to our three, one pointed free each from Anton Arandelovic and David Duignan and one point from Wayne McKeon. However, all is not lost and a good performance against Fenagh could still see us through. Well done to Annaduff on their victory and to fellow Ballinamore man, their Manager, Brian Breen. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, David Duignan (0-2), Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, John McWeeney (0-1), Ciaran Murray, Wayne McKeon (0-1), James McWeeney, Rory O’Rourke, Finnian Sharpley (0-4). Under 14 Football

Sean O’Heslins played Glencar/Manorhamilton on Friday last in the Park. This was a great game of skillful and very competitive football. O’Heslins were ahead by five points at half time, Manorhamilton added a few points before they got a lucky goal. This score put Manorhamilton a point ahead and they kept just ahead until the final whistle with Mark McGrory in very hard luck for a late goal. It finished Glencar/Manorhamilton 1-9. Ballinamore 0-10. Panel: Daniel Sweeney, Cyril Smith, Anthony Maguire, Jack Cullen, Eoin McHugh, Abdul Ahmed, John Fanning (Capt), Brian Beirne (0-3), David McLoughlin, Andrew Burns, Mark McGrory (0-2), Nathan Gallagher (0-1), Stephen McTague (0-4), Colm O’Reilly, Luke Murphy, Brian Banks, Niall Creamer, Gerard Curran, Conor Moran, Brian Leyden, Dean McGovern, Cian McCaffrey

Seniors draw with Cloone

This was not a result we were hoping for nor were we expecting it. Drawing with Cloone, along with losing to Aughnasheelin earlier in the year were two results not in the plans. Like the Aughnasheelin match this was a game where we always looked likely winners but could never get far enough ahead. It was 0-5 to 0-1 at one stage in the first half but Cloone came back to leave it 0-6 to 0-4 at half time. We were four points ahead on two occasions in the second half and looked likely to add to our total. However, Cloone’s Donal Brennan had a wonderful spell in the final ten minutes and put over four great points and the game ran to over five minutes of extra time during which Cloone got their last two points. This draw will make our chances of league promotion more difficult but need not be fatal depending on how the final four rounds go. However, it was one we would have been expected to win. Good performances were few but Joe Honeyman, Naoise Hayden, Thomas McLoughlin, James McWeeney and Finnian Sharpley were the exceptions.  It finished 0-12 each. Míle buíochas to Cloone on facilitating us with an earlier start on Saturday. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Thomas McLoughlin, John McWeeney, Ronan O’Rourke, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Wayne McKeon, James McWeeney (0-4), Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (0-6). Well Done to Leitrim

It was undoubtedly Leitrim’s best performance in a number of years. They may have been good against Galway but the performance against Donegal was superb. The atmosphere too was a joy to behold and the new stand contributed enormously to this. The sound from the stand was a big factor in creating that atmosphere. We hope that this Leitrim team will stay together because they are only marginally away from a Connacht title and Sligo’s win is further evidence of this. Leitrim Abú! Aisling Sings in Páirc Seán Do chan Aisling Maxwell Amhrán na bhFiann ag an gcluiche i bPáirc Seán MacDiarmada ar an Satharn. Mike O’Malley and the 1956 Championship Winning Team

Last November the club celebrated the 50 anniversary of the winning of the Senior Championship in 1956 and all of the players were invited to a celebration in Prior’s Lounge on that occasion. All of the surviving players were traced in advance of that event except one – Mike O’Malley. None of the players we contacted knew of the whereabouts of Mike O’Malley.  To our surprise we recently got an e-mail from Mike O’Malley who had spotted our website on the Internet and saw the picture of the 1956 team with himself included. Mike is now living on the Isle of Wight and of course did not know about the reunion. However he promises to visit Ballinamore before long and to call on some of his former teammates.

Ladies Win 9 a side League

Sean O’Heslins girls played Fenagh in the 9 a side League Final in Aughavas on Sunday. This was a good game of football with both sides very committed. The girls got off to a great start with a goal from Carmel McCartin. Just on the half-time whistle Fenagh got a goal leaving O’Heslins ahead by two points, on the score of 1-6 to 1-4. At the start of the second half O’Heslins took control and Caroline McGrory got a particularly good goal. O’Heslins built up an eleven point lead but in fairness Fenagh never gave up and reduced the lead to two points. In the end there was just three points in it. Final score was 4-9 to 5-3 for O’Heslins. This was a good result for the girls as it was there second year in a row to win the 9 a side final. The shield was presented to the O’Heslins captain, Kirby Gilgunn, and then the celebrations continued in Ballinamore. The team and management would like to thank the Poor Scholar for the refreshments after the match and all the supporters for coming to support the girls. Seniors lose to Ballinaglera in Shield

In the early stages of this game it looked as if we would win easily, it was 0-6 to 0-1 before Ballinaglera got going at all. Then Ballinaglera got a goal and at half time it was level, at 0-7 to 1-4. The second half was a real turnaround as all we got was a single point from a free and Ballinaglera got a goal and three points. It finished 2-7 to 0-8 and effectively finished our chance of reaching the shield final. Foireann:  Denis Dolan, Naoise Hayden, Shane Ferguson, Joe Honeyman, David Duignan (0-1), Peter McLoughlin, Brian Cafferty (0-2), Ronan Sharpley, Thomas McLoughlin, Anthony McTague, John McWeeney, Ronan O’Rourke, Shane Murphy, Rory O’Rourke, Finnian Sharpley (0-5). Juniors Lose in Division 4

Division 4 has turned out to be a difficult assignment for our second junior team and with Carrigallen at the top of the division our game on Sunday was always going to be difficult. It was over at half time as Carrigallen led by 5-6 to 0-2. Darren McGrory made a welcome return to the football fields and got two good second half points and Daryl McFarland got a goal to leave it 5-17 to 1-5 at the finish. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Gordon Hughes, Francis Dolan, Enda Quinn, Anthony Curran, Freddie Walsh, Neil Hughes, Jason Kellett, Kevin O’Connor, Stephan Beirne, Diarmuid Keegan, Darren McGrory (0-2), Adrian Murphy (0-1), Adrian Smith, Seán McCartin (0-2). Seniors beat Gortletteragh in League

Our seniors had a good win in what was one of the most significant fixtures in the whole Division 2 league. Gortletteragh would be considered as possibly the strongest team in the division having been relegated from Division 1 last year. From early on we dominated this game and led by 2-3 to 1-3 at half time. Two goals from an in-form Finnian Sharpley gave us a good lead at half-time. In the second half we added five more points and in the end were fairly clear cut winners by 2-8 to 1-5. Good to see Thomas McLoughlin back in action again after injury. Foireann: Philip Farrelly: Naoise Hayden, Paul McLoughlin, Joe Honeyman, David Duignan (0-1), Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Anton Arandelovic, Ronan Sharpley, Ronan O’Rourke, Johnny McWeeney, Wayne McKeon (0-1), James McWeeney (0-1), Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Finnian Sharpley (2-4). Subs used: Shane Murphy, Jim McTague, Thomas McLoughlin. Junior As lose to Eslin Our first Junior team were fairly depleted for their game against Eslin and as Eslin would be one of the strongest teams in the Division it wasn’t that bad a result. At half-time Eslin led by 0-4 to 0-1 and it finished Eslin 1-9 to O’Heslins 0-8. Foireann:  Gavin Brennan, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Rory O’Rourke, Naoise Hayden, Alan Prior, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Anthony Curran, Paul McLoughlin, Jason Kellett, Ronan O’Rourke (0-2), Anthony McTague, James McWeeney (0-3), Shane Murphy (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-1), Diarmuid Keegan. Ladies play Allen Gaels in the Park on Sunday at 12.00.  Supporters – We need you We have the finest pitch in the County – that is the general view of people, not just from Ballinamore but from all parts of the County and beyond. We would like now to see more of the people of the town and club area coming to our games. This Saturday our seniors play Gortletteragh at 6.30 in the Park. Probably two of the best teams in this division. It would be great to see more people there to support the team. Bring along the youngsters too. It is amazing that there are young boys and girls playing football for Sean O’Heslins who have never seen the club’s seniors play a game. Ná déan dearmad air, 6.30 ar an Satharn. The two Junior teams are also playing, Junior A on Sunday and Junior Bs on Monday

Ladies beat Aughnasheelin in 9 a side

Seán O’Heslins girls played their second match in the 9 a side league against Aughnasheelin on Saturday last. Conditions for playing were bad with heavy rain throughout. The girls played good football and were in control of the game from early on. They led at half tie by 2-3 to 0-1, the goals coming from Orla McWeeney and Caroline McGrory. The second half followed much the same as the first with O’Heslins playing some great football with further goals from Orla McWeeney and Carmel McCartin leaving it 4-5 to 0-1 at the end. Foireann: Aisling Flaherty, Katie Duignan, Kirby Gilgunn, Gillian Leyden, Michelle Fanning (0-1), Orla McWeeney (2-1), Carmel McCartin (1-1), Deborah Gilheaney (0-2), Caroline McGrory (1-0). They were without their county players on Sunday but so were we sort because of injuries etc. It was a close enough game, we were three points behind at half time, and St Mary’s won by 0-12 to 0-10 at the finish. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Joe Honeyman, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, David Duignan (0-1), Patrick McLoughlin, Philip Murphy, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Ronan Sharpley, Ronan O’Rourke, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Anthony McTague, James McWeeney (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, Finnian Sharpley (0-5). Ladies beat St Josephs in 13 a side

The Seán O’Heslins ladies played St Josephs in the 13 a side in Aughavas on Sunday. This was a good game of football with two very committed teams. It was a much improved performance by the girls in a game they had to win. Ballinamore played some lovely football and got some great scores. The two goals each that Carmel and Orla got came at the right times to keep the girls in front. The girls were leading by 6 points at half time and the stretched that lead to finish the game leading by 4-13 to 2-10. A great all round performance with everyone playing their part. Foireann: Niamh Smith, Gillian Leyden (0-1), Emma O’Dell, Katie Duignan, Kirby Gilgunn, Emma Reynolds, Michelle Fanning (0-2), Orla McWeeney (2-3), Deborah Gilheaney (0-3), Carmel McCartin (2-3), Leighann Gallagher, Ciara O’Dowd (0-1), Aisling Duignan, Róisín McTague, Aoife Smith, Caroline McGrory (0-1), Lauren McGrory. Next game is against Aughnasheelin in the 9 a side at the weekend. It is a home game but check fixtures for details.

Schools Football

The Boys school finished their series of games when the lost to Kinlough last week. This effectively meant they did not qualify for the final. They lost by 0-13 to 0-3. The Connacht INTO mini 7s were played in Ballinamore on Saturday and Ballinamore represented Leitrim having won the county competition last year. The Connacht stage is non-competitive in that there are no winners declared but each county gets a game against every other county winners. Eight of the boys went to Carricjk last Monday to meet the GAA Uachtarán, Nicky Brennan as he started his tour of the County promoting Féile. The boys got a kit for school from the President.

Ag imirt leis an gContae

Last Saturday Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin had its biggest attendance in a few years, for the Connacht Minor championship game against Sligo. It had a most unfortunate finish from a Leitrim point of view with victory slipping from Leitrim in extra time. Shane Murphy was on the Leitrim team and Jim McTague was in the subs. Meanwhile Leitrim’s hurlers were playing in Warwickshire and Kieran Maxwell was playing with them .

It will be a major task which will require the support of everyone in the club area and indeed people with Ballinamore connections far and wide. Further details will be provided shortly. Juniors Lose to Kiltubrid. Our Junior B team in Division 4 were badly beaten by Kiltubrid on Saturday last. This wasn’t a game you could say a lot about.  We played alright for fifteen minutes and amazingly, in view of the final result, it was no score to each team after a quarter of an hour. By half-time Kiltubrid had built up a lead of 1-5 to 0-1 but that did not seem insurmountable. However as the second half progressed it slipped away entirely. We got a penalty at one stage which Adrian Smith put narrowly wide but we were nowhere near Kiltubrid for most of the half. It finished 3-12 to 0-3. Seniors Beat Aughavas

Our Seniors had a good win over Aughavas on Saturday despite being short seven of the first thirteen for different reasons. Aughavas were, we understand, short too but overall we were very much in command apart from the first ten minutes when Aughavas got three points before we got started at all. We led by 0-4 to 0-3 at half-time. Finnian (2) Anton and Ronan O’Rourke got our scores. We dominated for most of the second half and led by 1-9 to 0-4 at one stage. A penalty from Wayne McKeon put us in a commanding position. However, Aughavas got a goal and a point to leave it finishing 1-10 to 1-5 (see full report elsewhere in paper) Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Paul McLoughlin, Joe Honeyman, Anthony McTague, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Ronan Sharpley, Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke (0-3), Brian Cafferty, Wayne McKeon (1-1), Shane Murphy (0-1), Rory O’Rourke, Finnian Sharpley (0-4). Subs: Philip Murphy for Anthony McTague, James McWeeney for Shane Murphy.

Junior A team beaten by Bornacoola

After getting two wins and one draw from our first three games we would have expected to add another win to this in Bornacoola on Sunday. We seemed to have a very strong team on duty but this turned out to be a very bad performance. Admittedly we may have been hampered by the fact that a lot of those playing had to play senior the evening before due to shortages at that level. At half time Bornacoola led by 1-4 to our 0-3. Ronan O’Rourke getting two points and Wayne McKeon one. We played fairly well in the first half and we unlucky to be behind. The second half was a disaster with Bornacoola scoring three goals within minutes of each other. That was that. Wayne McKeon scored two points, Alan Prior got one and Ronan O’Rourke from a free. Adrian Smith got a cheeky goal from a free about twenty-one yards out but it came too late. We lost by 4-9 to 1-7 but we are not as bad as that. There are only eight games in this division and we have half of them played. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Michael Costello, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Joe Murphy, Anthony McTague, Naoise Hayden, Philip Murphy, Brian Cafferty, Paul McLoughlin, Shane Murphy, Diarmuid Keegan, Wayne McKeon (0-3), Alan Prior (0-1), Adrian Smith (1-0), Ronan O’Rourke (0-3). Subs: Sean McCartin for A McTague, Neil Hughes for Joe Murphy, Daryl McFarland for D Keegan

Junior Bs draw with Cloone

The Junior B team drew with Cloone in an interesting encounter in Cloone on Monday. It was a game they could have won and could have lost. O’Heslins had the better of the first half and were three points up at one stage. Adrian Smith and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin got two points each, Sean McCartin pointed two frees and Alan Prior got a point. We were just one point ahead at half-time, 0-7 to 0-6. We struggled in the second half as Cloone came into it more. Jason Kellett and Sean McCartin got points and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin put O’Heslins into the lead with about five minutes left. However Cloone got two points to go one up. In the final minute, séan McCartin pointed from a free to level the match and it was a fair result to a close game. Notable features were the performance of Neil Hughes in the half back line and the free taking of Sean McCartin. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Freddie Walsh, Francis Dolan, Enda Quinn, Neil Hughes, Jason Kellett (0-1), Gordon Hughes, Peter Reynolds, Aidan Galligan, Alan Prior (0-1), Cormac Ó Suilleabháin (0-3), Stephen Beirne, Daryl McFarland, Adrian Smith (0-2), Seán McCartin (0-4).

League positions to Date

So far our seniors have played three games in division 2, winning two and losing one to Aughnasheelin. Our Junior a team in Division 3 have played four, winning two, drawing one and losing one. Seniors win in Manorhamilton

Our seniors had their first win of the league campaign when they beat Glencar/Manorhamilton in the Bee Park on Saturday. They were well on top in the first half and led by 0-10 to 0-2 at half time. They slackened a bit in the second half and Manorhamilton came back into it. However the Ballinamore lads finished stronger and won by 0-18 to 1-10. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Shane Ferguson, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, Anthony McTague, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Anton Arandelovic (0-2), Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Brian Cafferty (0-4), Joe Honeyman, Wayne McKeon (0-3), Finnian Sharpley (0-6), Rory O’Rourke, Ronan O’Rourke (0-1). Ladies beat Aughnasheelin

The Seán O’Heslins junior girls played Aughnasheelin in Aughnasheelin on Sunday. This was a good run for the girls and a much better performance than the week before. The first half was a lively affair and the girls went up by 5 points at half time. In the second half the girls completely dominated their opponents and ran out easy winners. This was a good all round performance but there is still room for improvement. Final score was 7-8 to 3-5. Foireann: Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Katie Duignan (0-1), Kirby Gilgunn, Gillian Leyden, Michelle Fanning (2-0), Carmel McCartin (1-1), Deborah Gilheaney (0-2), Orla McWeeney, Ciara O’Dowd (0-4), Caroline McGrory (2-1), Leighann Gallagher (1-0), Catherine Smith, Aisling Duignan, Emma Reynolds. Seniors Lose to Aughnasheelin

Our Seniors first outing in the League (Division 2) ended in a very disappointing defeat by Aughnasheelin on Saturday last. It was a game where really and truly we had the better of the game for the first 58 minutes and then were hit with a goal at the worst possible time. We led from the very beginning, at one stage by four points in the first half but we never got as far ahead as our play would have merited. Wides often tell a tale and Saturday last was such a case. We had 14 wides to Aughnasheelin’s four over the hour. The killer altogether was that we scored only three points in the second half and had six wides while Aughnasheelin scored 1-5 and had just one wide. In the end of the day goals win games and a goal with time almost up is the most valuable of all. There were a couple of minutes left when we conceded the goal but it was Aughnasheelin who got the final point. Our wides proved very costly but, that apart, we played well throughout and looked likely winners at all times up to the final minutes. We had the better of the first half and an early goal punched by Rory O’Rourke after a line ball from Anton Arandelovic really put us in the driving seat. Finnian Sharpley almost had another goal only for a great save from Seán Mahon in the Aughnasheelin goals. We led by 1-5 to 0-5 at half time and looked destined for victory but it wasn’t to be. It finished Aughnasheelin 1-10 O’Heslin’s 1-8. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Shane Ferguson, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Ronan Sharpley, Brian Cafferty (0-1), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Joe Honeyman (0-1), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Anthony McTague (0-2), Rory O’Rourke (1-0), Finnian Sharpley (0-1) Subs: John McWeeney, Ronan O’Rourke.

The biggest event in Leitrim this year will be the national Féile na nÓg when teams from all over Ireland and from abroad will converge on Leitrim at the end of June. There will be a lot of preparations to be made and a lot of help will be required but no doubt all club mentors and supporters will row in when the time comes

We play Aughnasheelin in the first senior league game (Div 2) on Saturday in Ballinamore at 6.30pm Shield B Win over Aughavas  Our seniors had a good win over Aughavas in the first Shield B match on Saturday in Aughavas. Playing without a number of established players including our two midfielders Anton and Thomas we did well to win by 1-12 to 0-9. At half time we led by 0-6 to 0-5 with three of those points coming from Seán Murray before he went off injured. Aughavas dominated for a while after half time but three good points from Brian Cafferty, and one each from Finnian Sharpley and Anthony McTague and a final score, a goal from Rory O’Rourke, left us winners by six points. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Shane Ferguson, Paul McLoughlin, Naoise Hayden, Liam Ferguson, Patrick McLoughlin, David Duignan, Brian Cafferty (0-4), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke, Joe Honeyman, Anthony McTague (0-1), Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Rory O’Rourke (1-1), Sean Murray (0-3). Subs Finnian Sharpley (0-2), Ronan Sharpley

Shield C Draw with Annaduff

This was a game which we could have won but in the end we did well to get a draw. At half time Annaduff led by 2-2 to 0-6 but they went ahead by seven points at one time. Then a Rory O’Rourke goal brought us back into it and points from Anthony McTague and Ronan O’Rourke and a last minute equalizing free from Adrian Gallogly gave us a deserved draw at 1-13 to Annaduff’s  3-7. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Kevin O’Connor, Paul McLoughlin, Kevin Prior, Joe McTague, Naoise Hayden, Philip Murphy, Brian Cafferty, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Ronan O’ Rourke (0-6), Adrian Gallogly (0-4), Anthony McTague (0-2), Joe Murphy, Rory O’Rourke (1-1), Seán McCartin.

Wear the Club Colours

We would like the compliment all of the players who played in Annaduff on Sunday morning who were all wearing the correct socks and togs in the club colours. We hope to see all of our seniors on Sunday and indeed all of our players in the proper rig out for all games.

Ladies Lose Narrowly to Gortletteragh

Sunday last the Seán O’Heslin’s junior ladies played Gortletteragh in Gortletteragh. This turned out to be a game of two halves in which Ballinamore totally dominated the first half and were leading well at half time. In the second half Gortletteragh came back well and got a few goals which totally turned the game and Ballinamore ended up losing by a point, Gortletteragh 4-5 Ballinamore 2-10. O’Heslins had an unmerciful amount of chances but were unable to put them away and they still need a lot of work on how to take scores in front of goals. Foireann Niamh Smith, Claire Fanning, Lauren McGrory, Emma O’Dell, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan, Michelle Fanning (1-0), Gillian Leyden, Leighann Gallagher, Deborah Gilheaney (0-3), Orla McWeeney (0-3), Caroline McGrory (1-4), Carmel McCartin.  Kate McTague, Emma Reynolds, Catherine Smith, Maeve Murphy, Róisín McTague Aisling Duignan. The Seán O’Heslins ladies would like to wish the best of luck to the Ballinamore PPS girls in the All Ireland Final on Tuesday next

Draw with Mohill in Division 3

On a beautiful Saturday evening our Junior A team played a draw with Mohill after making a great comeback in the final ten minutes. This was a good game throughout with some great passing movements from both teams. We had the better of the first half with points from Ronan O’Rourke, Adrian Gallogly, Anthony McTague, James McWeeney and Brian Cafferty but only led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time. One expected Ballinamore to pull away in the second half but instead it was Mohill who hit the high notes and before we knew where we were, Mohill were ahead by six points. Then the revival began with points from Ronan O’Rourke, Brian Cafferty, Adrian Gallogly and Paul McLoughlin and it was a final one from Paul McLoughlin, almost on time, which gave us a deserved draw at 0-12 to Mohill’s 1-9. It certainly was a great comeback. Foireann: Colm Brennan, Kevin O’Connor, Rory O’Rourke, Kevin Prior, Anthony Curran, Naoise Hayden, Philip Murphy, Paul McLoughlin (0-2), Brian Cafferty (0-2), Anthony McTague (0-1), James McWeeney (0-1), Ronan O’Rourke (0-4), Alan Prior, Adrian Smith, Adrian Gallogly (0-2). Subs used: Tommy McCormack

Third team lose heavily to Leitrim Gaels

This was a poor performance by our Junior B team and they were playing badly from early on, even before Leitrim Gaels got rightly on top. Ironically we were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead and doing fairly well until Leitrim Gaels got a couple of goals and this seemed to set us back badly. By half time Leitrim Gaels led by 3-5 to 0-4 and it was “ag múnadh in aghaidh na gaoithe” after that. Our points in the first half came from Jason Kellett, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin and two from Anthony Curran. The second half was a disaster for us and our only score came from a penalty scored by Adrian Smith after Daryl McFarland was pushed in the square. We lost by 4-13 to 1-4 and it could be worse only for some great saves from Michael Dolan in goals. Foireann: Michael Dolan, Joseph Murphy, Francis Dolan, Michael Costello, Philip Murphy, Fred Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Anthony Curran ((0-2), Jason Kellett (0-1), Adrian Murphy, Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Alan prior, Sean McCartin, Adrian Smith (1-0), Daryl McFarland. Subs used: Gordon Hughes, Stephen Beirne, Tommy McCormack, Neil Hughes.

Under 16s win

Our under 16 boys beat Dromahair by 2-13 to 3-7 last Friday evening. They were three points down with ten minutes to go but put in a great finish in which they scored 1-3. Team: Dean Creaven, John Fanning, Shane Moran, Éamon Walsh, Matthew Murphy, Eoin McHugh, Seamus Donnelly, Conor McTague, Stephen McTague, Shane McWeeney, Finbar Smith, Brian Beirne, Keith McKiernan. Subs: Barry Flynn, Cyril Smith, Andrew Burns. Sean O’Heslins Under 14 girls wins first game at home Our under 14 girls played their first game of the season last Saturday morning in the Park verves Mohill.  It turned out to be a great game from both sides.  The Sean O’Heslins girls open the game with the first score, at half time Mohill lead by 3pts. In the second half the girls put in a great performance throughout and finished the game in great style with a great performance all round.  The game finished: Sean O’Heslins 5-10 Mohill 5-4. Team panel: Louise Farry, Niamh Donnelly, Ciara McTague, Sinead Gormley, Aoibheann Curran, Ciara O’Dowd, Laura O’Dowd, Caroline Bourke, Phillipa O’Reilly, Megan O’Connor, Niamh Flynn, Paige Taylor, Siobhan McTague, Arlene McGovern, Dawn Flynn, Sarah Beth Reilly, Yasmin Green, Rachel Gilheaney. Next game Friday 20th April at 7pm verves St Josephs.

There are a number of jobs to be done in the Park and Tom Burns is looking for a Meitheal of helpers for the next couple of Saturdays, starting at 10.00. Please don’t wait to be asked as we need lots of help and bring any tools you have particularly if you have a strimmers.

Winner of €30 presented by Frank Flynn: James Murphy. Uimhreacha: 65417320 How many games does an adult player play each year? A very interesting study was done in conjunction with the Committee which looked at the restructuring of the leagues earlier this year and it involved compiling a list of all Sean O’Heslins players who played adult football in 2006 and the amount of games they played. Seán O’Heslins was probably typical of the ten clubs which currently field three adult teams each. There are some surprises in this study. During 2006 a total of 59 players played for one or other of our three teams and played at least one game during the year in either league or championship. There was a notion out there that a lot of players are getting a lot of football and this study shows that this is not really the case. Croke Park has set a target of 20 games per year for each adult player per year. Only 7 of those 59 players played more than 20 games in the year. Anthony Curran and Peter Dolan topped the list having played 25 games in the course of the year, followed by Gavin Brennan with 23 games and Cormac Ó Suilleabháin with 22. The other three who topped the 20 mark were: Anton Arandelovic, Adrian Gallogly and Fred Walsh all on 20. The average player in the club played between 9-12 games over the year. Another suggestion sometimes made is that a lot of players are playing three grades of football during the year. Again this study shows that this is very rarely the case. Six of the 59 players did play at least one game in three league grades during the year, but five of those just scraped into that category by appearing just once in one of the three. The only player who played a number of games in three grades was Peter Dolan and he played seven games in Div 2, nine in Div 3 and five in Div 5, making him the most versatile player in the club in 2006. However, the study shows that such a player is a rarity. Overall the study shows that the system is generally good and a lot of players get football over the year but you do need a big panel of players to be able to field three teams. Some fellows only appear with a lot of persuasion when the club is really stuck and injuries etc mean that many players play very little football during the year. The full details of games played by each player is given below

Juniors Win in First Division 3 Outing

Our Junior A team, which plays in Division 3 of the League had their first game of the year on Saturday. They beat St Mary’s by 1-12 to 1-6. At half time the sides were level at 0-7 for us to 1-4 to St Mary’s. However the turning point came with Adrian Smith’s goal early on after half-time and we had much the better of the second half. Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Paul McLoughlin, Joe McTague, Anthony McTague, Naoise Hayden, Philip Murphy, Brian Cafferty (0-2), Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Shane Murphy (0-1), James McWeeney (0-2), Wayne McKeon (0-2), Alan Prior (0-2), Adrian Smith (1-0), Ronan O’Rourke (0-2). Sub used: Kevin Prior.

Juniors draw with Aughawillan in Division 4

Our Junior B team, which is playing in Division 4 this year, played a draw in a very well-contested game in brilliant sunshine but freezing cold on Sunday morning. The game was level at half time at 0-5 each. Early in the second half we looked to be heading for victory with goals from Daryl McFarland and Adrian Murphy but Aughawillan came back with two goals themselves and were three points up with time almost gone. Then Seán McCartin pounced on a ball in the goalmouth and finished to the net to level it at Sean O’Heslins 3-6 to Aughawillan’s 2-9. Foireann: Cormac Ó Suilleabháin, Joseph Murphy, Francis Dolan, Enda Quinn, Philip Murphy, Freddie Walsh, Kevin O’Connor, Peter Reynolds (0-1), Peter Dolan, Alan Prior (0-1), Anthony Curran, Adrian Murphy (1-0), Daryl McFarland (1-0), Adrian Smith (0-2), Seán McCartin (1-1). Subs used: Tommy McCormack (0-1), Jason Kellett, Stephen Beirne, Michael Costello.

Ladies Draw with Aughawillan

Seán O’Heslins Junior Ladies played their first game of the 13 a side league on Sunday against Aughawillan in the Park. It was a game that could have gone either way with the girls getting a late goal to level it. Aughawillan started better, O’Heslins came back into it but a late goal left Aughawillan leading by a point at half time. O’Heslins started the second half well and went ahead by a few points but Aughawillan got a goal and a few points to put them three ahead but the late goal leveled it. This game showed that the girls have the skill but have a lot of work to do. It was also good to see so many girls playing junior football for the first time. Team and scorers: Niamh Smith, Lauren McGrory, Claire Fanning, Emma O’Dell, Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan, Michelle Fanning (0-1), Gillian Leyden, Caroline McGrory, Deborah Gilheany (1-0), Orla McWeeney (02), Carmel McCartin (0-2), Leighann Gallagher (1-1), Kate McTague (0-1), Catherine Smith, Laura Brennan, Ciara O’Dowd, Aisling Duignan, Aoife Smith, Róisín McTague, Louise Farry

90th Birthday wishes to our oldest Lotto Supporter

Katie Cafferty never misses a Monday night at our Lotto, indeed it could not go on until Mary Harte, Margaret McKeon and Katie Cafferty arrive from the Bingo and that is the way it has been since our Lotto started several years ago. On last Monday night the Lotto committee had a surprise birthday cake for Katie. In fact she had celebrated her 90th birthday in Pat Joe’s on Saturday night but on an occasion such as this there is always room for another celebration. Best wishes to Katie and long may she continue to patronize our Lotto, and win from time to time as well. Gura fada slán thú. Katie.

Bás Noel Flynn

Noel Flynn, the most successful player ever in Leitrim in terms of senior championships won, passed away last Wednesday after being ill for a number of weeks. Noel played most of his football with Seán O’Heslins, winning two minor championships and seven senior championships with the club. Noel wrote about his early playing days at underage level with Ballinamore in “Come on Cannaboe” the book brought out to celebrate the centenary of the club in 1989. When Aughawillan were reformed in the 1970s he transferred back to his home club and won two further senior championships with them. Between the two clubs he achieved a record of nine senior championships, something that is unlikely to be equaled. Fear go raibh an spéis aige sa pheil go lá a bháis. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air.

Seniors Lose in Division II Shoot-out

Our seniors lost by the narrowest of margins in their fight to gain Division 1 League status for 2007. This was a dramatic game that went to extra time on a cold showery morning in Aughnasheelin. In a year when we lost a lot of games in different grades by slim margins, this was another one that slipped from us. Indeed at full time in the game itself we seemed home and dried when Seán Murray shot a great goal with time almost up. Who would believe that Manorhamilton would be lucky enough to get an equalizer – but that is what happened. The difference in the finish was a combination of couple of fortunate goals conceded, some missed chances and a certain amount of indiscipline at the wrong time. We certainly fought to the finish and everyone tried their best. Despite playing into the wind and rain we went three points up in less than ten minutes with scores from Paul McLoughlin and two frees from Seán Murray. Then disaster hit us when the ball went marginally over the line for a Manorhamilton goal. From then on we made no headway. At half time Glencar/Manorhamilton led by 1-1 to 0-3. This was a good position for us considering that the wind was favouring us in the second half. For the first twenty minutes we made no progress on the scoreboard and Manorhamilton scored three points, to lead by four. Then the revival took place. Seán Murray got a good goal and then Wayne McKeon leveled. With time almost up Sean Murray, our man-of-the-match, hit the net again. For Manorhamilton it was their greatest stroke of luck since the 1999 Senior Championship Final when they got a last minute goal against Fenagh. And so it was extra time. Again we went two points up from Anton Arandelovic and Brian Cafferty, but low and behold Manorhamilton goal again. Wayne McKeon and Seán Murray got points but we could not get the leveler and it finished 3-6 to 2-8 in favour of Glencar/Manorhamilton. We have often played worse and won. Comhghairdeas to Glencar/Manorhamilton on their victory and on promotion to Division 1. Foireann: Colm Brennan, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Joe Honeyman, Ciaran Murray, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Anton Arandelovic (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Anthony McTague, Rory O’Rourke, Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Finnian Sharpley, Ronan Sharpley, Seán Murray (2-3). Subs: Brian Cafferty (0-1), Paul Prior, Johnny McWeeney.

Buíochas to Trainer Séamus McKeon

For the past two years Séamus McKeon has trained our senior team. He has put a huge amount of time and effort and his tenure has not been without success. We have succeeded in remaining in the Senior Championship over those two seasons and were beaten in each year by the eventual championship winners. We went within a score of getting promotion in the league on Saturday last. Seamus finished his tenure on Saturday. We must also compliment the players who have put a mighty effort into training and there is no doubt our day will come. Míle buíochas a Shéamuis agus buíochas do na himreoirí go léir.

Success in Connacht Scór

Congratulations to Aisling Maxwell who came out on top in the Connacht Scór na nÓg Finals in Claremorris on Saturday last. Aisling gave a wonderful rendering of the “Bantry Girls Lament” and won from an excellent line-up of singers. Our Rince Foirne and Nuachleas performed excellently and both would have been in the shake-up for the title. Comhghairdeas freisin don Bhailéad Ghrúpa ó Chumann Naomh Muire a bhuaigh an comórtas sin.

Tickets for the All Ireland Scór na nÓg Finals in Athlone can be ordered from Cyril Smith. The finals are in the John McCormack Centre in Athlone on 17 February starting at 3.00pm. Orders must be in by 1 February.

1956 All Ireland Minor Final

The Leitrim team that reached the All Ireland Minor Final in 1956 was celebrated at the County Board Dinner Dance last Saturday night. Among those honoured was Seán O’Heslins own Paddy Dolan who was then a very young minor. 1956 was a special year for Paddy as he also won his first Senior County Championship with Ballinamore just a week before his appearance with the Minors in Croke Park. Many of the team were present on Friday and it was a memorable occasion, ag féachaint siar ar leath-chéad bliain ó shoin.

Seniors in Play-off for Division 2 League Final

In the first play-off to decide who is promoted to Division 1 of the League, we just survived by a point against Glenfarne in Kiltubrid on Saturday last. It was a dreadful wet morning with a strong breeze as well. We started well with points from Finnian Sharpley and Wayne McKeon but Glenfarne came back to level and then got a goal against the run of play. Seán Murray got two good points but we struggled for much of the half and Glenfarne led by three points a couple of times. In the final minutes Finnian Sharpley, Ciaran Murray and Anton Arandelovic, from a free, got the points to level it at half time, Glenfarne 1-4, Seán O’Heslins 0-7. It didn’t look all that good to be facing into the wind and rain for the second half, and conditions were even worst in the second half. However, there was no doubt about it everyone tried their best and while Glenfarne added just one point to their total in the second half, Anton Arandelovic pointed two close in frees to give us victory by 0-9 to 1-5. It was a victory that was hard-earned but it brings us that step closer to the Division 2 final and promotion. Now it is on to next Saturday against Glencar/Manorhamilton in what is effectively a semi-final. Foireann: Colm Brennan, David Duignan, Patrick McLoughlin, Shane Ferguson, Joe Honeyman, Ciaran Murray (0-1), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Thomas McLoughlin, Anton Arandelovic (0-3), Anthony McTague, Rory O’Rourke, Seán Murray (0-2), Finnian Sharpley (0-2), Paul McLoughlin, Ronan Sharpley. Subs: Ruairí Ó Suilleabháin, Brian Cafferty, James McWeeney

Senior Semi Final on Saturday

Our Seniors play Glencar/Manorhamilton in what is effectively a League semi final on Saturday in Ballinaglera at 11.00. We urge all our supporters to be there as a victory on Saturday would give us promotion to Division 1.

The club extends sympathy to the Gannon Family, Main St on the death of young Dermot Gannon at the early age of 32 years. Dermot would have played underage football with Seán O’Heslins and his family has been greatly involved in the GAA in Ballinamore through his father Dermot Gannon and his grandfather, the legendary Tom Gannon. Ar dheis Dé go raibh sé.

League Play Off

The Division 2 League Play-off against Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher will be in Kiltubrid on Saturday next at 11.00pm. Three Leitrim Scór na nÓg titles. Once again Sean O’Heslins came out tops at the County Finals in Manorhamilton on Sunday last. Three of our items came away with County titles. Our Figure dancers won the title for the third year in a row. This is a wonderful achievement for Orla McCaffrey and her group of dancers: Michelle Reynolds, Joanne Keenaghan, Orla McWeeney, Niamh Griffin, Shauna Cullen, Sarah Sweeney, Maria O’Reilly and Aisling Maxwell. It was a particularly great night for Aisling Maxwell as she collected her second medal when she won the sols singing. Remarkably, Aisling also won the county award three years ago and now repeated her success. Our third victory came in Nuachleas. After winning the All Ireland last year, Raymond McHugh and Michael fanning had to come up with a new act and they certainly came up with something original and topical. Based on the first rugby match in Croke Park, their sketch won against stiff opposition. The cast includes; Seamus Donnelly, John Fanning, Catherine Smith, Lisa Duignan, Clare Fanning, Mark McGrory, Eoin McHugh and Stephen Beirne. The club were also well represented in Ballad Group by Aisling Duignan, Katie Duignan, Lauren McGrory, Ciara Martin and Aoife Smith. Well done to Ann Gallogly for tutoring this group. Finally our younger set was composed of Eadaoin and Niamh McGourty, Eileen Wrynn, Maeve Gleeson, Alison Sweeney, Niamh Flynn, Siobhan McTague, and Laura Creaven.

Abhaile don Nollaig

The Christmas is a great time for getting people together and while most people are working in Ireland nowadays there are still a lot of people who are away for some time and who come back at Christmas time to meet all of their old friends. Sin mar a bhí ar oíche an chrannchuir mhóir i Gay Priors ar an 30 Nollaig. Among those present were: Tom McCaffrey home from California, Brendan Wisely home from Singapore, Mark Kieran back from Madrid, Aidan and Alison Harte from Arizona, Maureen Moran from Paris, Johnny Ryan from London and many more. A sign of the times was that Claire McIntyre who won the €3000 prize had gone on holidays to Austria. Nights like those are great occasions and show that the community influence of the GAA goes way beyond the games alone. Gura fada buan é.
