AGM

There was a good attendance of 55 at our AGM on Saturday last. The year’s activities were outlined in the comprehensive report of Rúnaí, Patsy Connaughton. The big news was the appointment of our new Senior team Manager for 2013. There were some successes with our Under 14s winning the League, our under 14 hurlers winning the Championship and representing Leitrim in Féile na nGael. Our minor girls won the 9 a side Championship. We had some narrow misses in underage and in ladies finals. In all we were in ten finals at underage level but won only three. However, to be the second best team in the County will surely lead to more success later.  The Dialogues through Literature Symposium in August was a big event which was opened by Uachtarán Cumann lúthchleas Gael, Liam Ó Néill. The Annual Report is worth reading and if you haven’t got a copy please email Patsy Connaughton at secretary.ballinamoreseanoheslins.leitrim@gaa.ie

Finance

Like the state of the country, our finances are a constant struggle. Huge efforts are going into fundraising. In 1912, the big new venture was our weekly Bingo. This was set up by Anne Shanley with great assistance from Alice Shields and Ann McCaffrey. Our main fundraisers were the Christmas Draw, Weekly lotto, Monthly members Contributions, Harvest festival, Sponsored Cycle and Sponsorship.

Anne Shanley had been Cisteoir for nine years from 2001 to 2009 and has been leas-chisteoir for the past three years. Anne has in fact been the club’s longest ever serving Treasurer as far as our records go back and that is without the time she spent as Leas-chisteoir. Tommy Dolan also stepped down as Cláiritheoir. Míle buíochas to Peter, Anne and Tommy for their work for the club in key positions.

Bainisteoir Nua

The big news at the AGM is that the club will have a new Senior team manager in 2013. Mickey Graham, former Cavan footballer and Cavan Gaels clubman is our new manager. Mickey will lead us in our endeavours in Division 1 League and in Intermediate Championship. Mickey Graham was a very prominent Cavan Footballer and was on the Cavan team which won the Ulster Senior Championship in 1997. He was also on the Cavan team which reached the All Ireland Under 21 Final in 1996. He managed Cavan Gaels last year and has managed a number of other Cavan clubs. Ladies All Ireland Final in Park

The club is honoured to host the All Ireland Ladies Senior Football Club Final on Sunday. The Final is between Carnacon (Mayo) and Donaghmoyne (Monaghan). The game starts at 1.30. As far as we know this is the first time an All Ireland Final has been staged in the Park. The Cornacon team includes the legendary Cora Staunton, probably one of the greatest lady footballers of all time. It promises to be a game worth seeing. Carnacon are current All Ireland champions and are seeking their fifth title. Donaghmoyne are seeking their third All Ireland. Stewards required.

Under 21s beaten in Semi-Final

Our football season ended on Saturday evening when our Under 21s were well beaten by Glencar/Manorhamilton in the Under 21 semi-final. We had a bad start and conceded two early goals. Mind you there was a while when we had all the play but were bottled up on every occasion by the Manor defence. It fell apart when we conceded another goal and were behind at half-time by 3-5 to 0-3. Shane McWeeney had got all our three points, one from a free. The second half was a formality and it ended 4-13 to 1-5. If we met them again this week the result would likely be the same but, without doubt, the score would be different. It was one of our really bad performances.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Kevin Banks, Anthony Maguire, John Fanning, Jack Cullen, Matthew Murphy, Keelan McHugh, Shane Moran, David McLoughlin, Andrew Burns, Éamon Walsh, Shane McWeeney (0-4), Stephen McTague, Brian Beirne (0-1), Mark McGrory (1-0). Under 16s Great Performance in defeat

Our under 16s put in a great performance in the Under 16 A Championship Final on Sunday morning and were only beaten in extra time. This was another episode of the long-running rivalry with Mohill St Manchan’s. We were unlucky to miss few chances early on and then fall five points behind and when Mohill got a soft second goal all seemed lost. However Dean McGovern got a great goal, which was his second goal of the half and then Barry McGovern got a great point to leave it 2-6 to 2-4 at half-time. Our second half performance was remarkable, and the points scored were exceptional. Dean McGovern got the first, Luke Murphy got the next but the final three from Peter Reynolds, Paddy Connaughton and Kevin Mullen, when they were sorely needed, were inspirational.

With the game going to extra time, hopes were raised after out-scoring Mohill for the second half. The first period was equally close with Kevin Mullen getting our first point and Luke Murphy pointing a free and it was 2-11 apiece at half-time in extra time. The final ten minutes just didn’t go our way with Mohill playing their best football during that period. We didn’t score and they got three points and it ended 2-14 to 2-11. A great performance from both teams and the end of another day and another year. Well done to mentors Ollie Honeyman, Patrick McKiernan, Patsy Connaughton and Joe Feely.

Foireann: Darren Maxwell, Brian Leyden, James Hamill, Paddy Connaughton(0-1), Peter Reynolds(0-1), Donal Feely, Niall McGovern, Dean McGovern (2-2), Oisín McCaffrey, Kevin Mullen (0-2),Darragh Murphy, Barry McGovern (0-1),Luke Murphy (0-4). Sub: Conor Maxwell and Darragh Murphy replaced each other on a number of occasions. We had just one sub on the sideline for the Final.

Bingo

Bingo continues with great gusto. Turkeys and bottles of whiskey to be won each Tuesday to Christmas. Starts at 8.30.

U-14 Hurlers are County Champions :

Congratulations to our U14s who were crowned county champions last Friday evening in Ballinamore. On the day we were much stronger than Carrick who had a very young team. This team has been a credit to the club this year, representing the county at Féile and now winning the championship. Thanks go to our loyal supporters who showed up in good numbers as always. Team: Barry McGovern, Ben McGirl, Kevin Mullen, Stephen Flynn, Aaron Hoare, Niall McGovern, Adam Goldrick, Darragh Murphy, Aaron McLoughlin, Cailin O’Rourke, Damian Creaven, Cormac Salmon, Alan Doonan, Darren Maxwell, Ciaran Cullen. Under 16 Girls Final ends in Draw

It was expected to be a close game as both teams had comprehensively defeated the other two clubs in the Competition, and so it turned out. Yes, the 11 a-side Under 16 Championship Final ended in a draw Sean O’Heslin’s 3-6, St Josephs 2-9. It was very much a game of two halves as we led by 2-6 to 0–2 at half time and were looking good. Amazingly, all we got in the second half was a goal from three-goal hero Emma McGovern and we needed it as St Josephs scored 2-7 in the second half. In the end we were lucky not to lose the game. Now it is on to the replay on 11 November. Time and venue to be fixed.

Foireann: Niamh Toolan, Frances Farry, Emily Sweeney, Lisa Maguire, Ellen Wrynn, Eilish O’Dowd (0-4), Aoibheann Flynn, Bláithín Sharpley (1-1), Leighanne Flynn (2-0), Róisín McHugh (0-1), Emma McGovern (3-0), Subs: Rachel Creamer, Grace Wrynn, Cáit Connaughton, Kate Reynolds, Katie Cullen, Colette McGirl, Aoife Murphy, Shaneen McGovern.

Under 16 Boys

Our under 16 boys had a comprehensive win over Allen Gaels to keep their Championship prospects alive. There are a couple of other games to be played to decide who is in the final.

Under 14 Hurling Final

Morgan Quinn – Shinty International

Comhghairdeas to Morgan Quinn who has been selected for the Ireland panel to play Scotland in the Under 21 Hurling/Shinty International against Scotland this Friday. Morgan also played for Ireland in the corresponding game last year in Scotland . Another of our hurlers,
Paddy McManus, has been nominated for a Lory Meagher All Star award.

Comhghairdeas do Chluainín Iomáint

Comhghairdeas do Cluainín Iomáint ar an mbua a bhí acu i gCluiche Ceannais Iománaí Liatroma ar an Satharn. This was Cluainín’s first win since 1959, when the late Tomas Ó Duibhir was involved with hurling. For Ballinamore hurlers it is interesting that in the last three years three different clubs won the Championship, Carrick in 2010, Gortletteragh in 1011 and now Cluainín. Last year we lost the semi-final by a point to Gortletteragh who went on to win the final and this year we lost by a point to Cluainín in the semi-final. Right lads – Béal an Átha Móir in 2013.

Hurlers Lose Semi-Final by a Point

Ballinamore senior hurlers have been unfortunate for the third year in a row in the semi-final. In 2010 they drew with Gortletteragh but lost in extra time. Then last year they lost again to Gortletteragh by a last minute point. On Saturday, Manorhamilton were the opposition but again they lost by a single point.

We got a bad start when Manorhamilton got a goal in the first few minutes. However the lads battled back and it was 1-3 to 0-4 at half time. Morgan Quinn got three points, one from a free and Shane Moran got the fourth. We were holding our own in the second half but just could not get scores. Manorhamilton got two points and with not much time left they got a goal to leave them 2-5 to 0-4 ahead and it seemed all over with only three minutes left. However, in a dramatic finish, Cormac Ó Súilleabháin finished to the net twice to put just a single point between the teams. It was anticipated there would be at least two additional minutes to play, but the ref blew after 30 seconds and that was it. It was hard luck again for Manager Paddy O’Connor and a team who tried very hard. We were unfortunate to lose Paddy McManus to injury before the game and Denis Dolan was injured early on.

Foireann: Ruairí Ó Súilleabháin, Paul Earley, Denis Dolan, Joe Earley, Kevin Banks, Seán McWeeney, Liam Ferguson, Shane Moran (0-1), Paul McLoughlin, Kevin O’Connor, Morgan Quinn (0-3), Éamon Walsh, Cormac Ó Súilleabháin (2-0), Keith Boyle, Brendan Mulvey. Subs: Tommy McCormack for Denis Dolan. Michael O’Dell for T McCormack, Dan O’Brien for M O’Dell. Also available Derek Moran and Cian McCaffrey.

The girls celebrated with the traditional tour of the town.

Foireann: Bláithín Sharpley, Róisín McHugh,(0-1),Ellen Wrynn, Aoibheann Flynn, Laura O’Dowd (2-6), Eilish O’Dowd (1-2), Aoibheann Curran (Capt) (1-0), Maeve Gleeson (0-1), Leighanne Flynn (1-1). Subs: Frances Farry and Lisa Maguire.

Seniors Lose to Drumreillly

Our seniors lost to Drumreilly on Saturday in the Gallogly Catering Div I League. It certainly was a “game of two halves”. We dominated the first half and led at half-time by 0-6 to 0-2. Stephen McTague got two good points. Shane McWeeney pointed two frees and Ronan O’Rourke and Shane Moran got a point each. While we had to face a bit of a breeze in the second half, we got the first score when James McWeeney pointed a free to put us five up, but it all stopped there. We didn’t get another score for the next twenty-five minutes and Drumreilly scored 2-4. It ended 2-6 to 0-7.

Seniors get back to Winning Ways

Our seniors had a morale-boosting win over Naomh Muire in the League Div 1 on Saturday last. From the start there was great effort in the team, more concentration and fewer mistakes than in any of their championship encounters. The game was won by half time when we led by 2-7 to 0-4. Hero of the hour was Paul McLoughlin who scored two great goals in the first half. The first followed a great pass from Shane Moran who also had a great game at midfield. Seán Murray scored a couple of exceptional points and Denis Dolan made a couple of great saves in the first half. It finished 2-13 to 0-7.

A dark end to a dark summer for our Seniors

On Friday last players, mentors and supporters shuffled quietly out of Cloone on a dark September evening with the dismal news that Ballinamore Seán O’Heslin’s will not be in senior ranks for the 2013 season. Mobile coverage on the way home wasn’t good but it wasn’t long before the same message had reached Ballinamore diaspora. Bad news travels fast. Eleven years ago, in the autumn of 2001, we were relegated to Intermediate Championship for the first time ever. In 2002 we reached the Final of the Intermediate Championship and, ironically, lost the Final to Kiltubrid. By a stroke of fortune we gained reprieve in 2003 when a motion was approved by County Convention which allowed 20 teams in the Senior Championship. It was an extraordinary motion which, thankfully, we did not initiate or vote for, but it suited us. Returning to Senior ranks after just one year in Intermediate, we thought the outcome of 2001 would never be repeated but, alas, it is upon us again. Next year there will be no such reprieve and our return to Senior ranks can only be achieved by winning the Intermediate Championship.

Intermediate Future

The positive side of being in the Intermediate Championship next year is that we will be in a competition where we can hold out reasonable hope of making progress. Seán O’Heslin’s never won an Intermediate Championship. It is the one and only competition we haven’t won. We will still be in Division 1 of the League except some awful disaster befalls us in the last few rounds. Tá ré nua buailte linn agus caithfimid cur suas leis agus leas a bhaint as.

Defeat to Kiltubrid

Kiltubrid got a dream start on Friday with a goal in the first minute. They had another goal a few minutes later and it was 2-3 to 0-1 before we knew we were in Cloone. Then we got three points in a row: one from Shane Moran and two from Shane McWeeney. There was five points in it when the floodlights failed with two minutes left in the first half. In the partial darkness many of the Ballinamore people present were praying silently that the lights would not be got going again. The signs were ominous but our prayers were not answered. When the lights came back Kiltubrid added two more points in the couple of minutes’ play that remained. We got a short reprieve when James McWeeney netted a penalty but the resurrection never occurred. The players tried their best but it just wasn’t there. It ended 2-9 to 1-8 for Kiltubrid.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Philip Murphy, Matthew Murphy, David Duignan, John Fanning, Liam Ferguson, David McLoughlin, Paul McLoughlin, Stephen McTague (0-1), Johnny McWeeney, Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney (0-3), James McWeeney (1-2), Shane Moran (0-1), Sean Murray. Subs Anthony McTague for J Fanning, Ronan O’Rourke (0-1) for D McLoughlin, Andrew Burns for S McWeeney .

Juniors out of B Championship

Our last chance in adult championship for 2012 ended on Sunday morning although our Junior B team put in a great performance against Naomh Muire. Missing a lot of players who were eligible for this grade, the team did very well against table toppers Naomh Muire. At half time we led by 0-9 to 1-3. Despite getting goals from Adrian Murphy and Adrian Gallogly we were unable to contain the points tally from Naomh Muire in the second half and it ended 1-16 to 2-11 in their favour.

Foireann: Colm Brennan, David Earley, Kevin Banks, Brian Banks, Conor Moran, Kevin Prior, Éamon Walsh (0-2), Jason Kellett, Adrian Murphy (0-1), Seán McCartin, Anthony McTague (1-3),  Colm O’Reilly, Adrian Gallogly (1-4), Stephen Beirne, Daryl McFarland (0-1). Sub: Diarmuid Keegan for S McCartin .

Minors Lose in Semi Final

Mohill were hot favourites going into this semi-final and the game went along expected lines. The lads fought hard in the first half and at half time we were behind by 0-10 to 0-4. Luke Murphy, almost singlehandedly, kept us in contention scoring four points, two from play. Mohill got the goals in the second half and it ended 4-15 to 0-5. Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Brian Banks, Kevin Banks, Brian Leyden, Keelan McHugh, Anthony Maguire, Conor Moran, Jack Cullen, Dean McGovern, Dónal Feely, Peter Reynolds, Colm O’Reilly, Luke Murphy (0-4), Mark McGrory (0-1), Paddy Connaughton. Subs: Cian Reynolds for C O’Reilly, Oisín McCaffrey for P Connaughton, Colm O’Reillys for D Feely, Mark O’Reilly.

Minor semi final against Maothail, which was postponed last Wednesday due to heavy rain is now on this Friday in Cloone at 6.30. Junior B Championship against Naomh Muire in Drumshanbo Sunday at 12.00 noon.

Juniors depart from Junior A Championship

Our Junior A team followed the path of our seniors when they made their exit from the Junior Championship on Saturday last. They were well in the game up to half time when they were just three points behind, 0-8 to 0-5. Mark McGrory was our saviour as he scored four points, three of them from play, plus one from Andrew Burns. We did not make any further progress in the second half despite two points from Andrew Burns and two pointed frees from Paul Prior. Overall, Gortletteragh had too much power for us throughout the field.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Kevin Banks, Jim McTague, Kevin O’Connor, Keelan McHugh, Shane Creamer, Jack Cullen, Ryan Gavin, Conor McTague, Anthony McTague, John McWeeney, Andrew Burns (0-3), Mark McGrory(0-4) Rory O’Rourke, Brian Cafferty. Subs Paul Prior (0-2) for C McTague, Brian Beirne for J McTague, Tommy McCormack for B Cafferty.

Junior good win in B Championship

Our B team had a good win over Naomh Caillin on Sunday evening last in the B Championship. They were behind by 1-5 to 0-6 at half time. The introduction of Ciarán Murray at half time steadied the team and they finished winners by 1-15 to 1-10. Our final group game will be against Naomh Muire.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Brian Banks, Kevin Prior, David Earley, Anthony McTague, David Leyden, Éamon Walsh, Jason Kellett (0-1), Ronan Sharpley (0-1), Johnny McWeeney (0-5), Adrian Murphy, Colm O’Reilly (0-1), Seán McCartin (0-5), Adrian Gallogly (1-2), Daryl McFarland (0-1). Subs used: Ciaran Murray and Stephen Beirne.

Under 14s Lose in Championship Final

The under 14 final was certainly a classic case of a game of “Two halves”. At half time we led by 2-5 to 0-5 with Kevin Mullen and Niall McGovern completely dominating proceedings. When Kevin Mullen hit another great point within minutes of the restart it looked as if we were heading for the title. Who would have believed that from then on Fenagh would score 5-8 to our two points? It was a remarkable transformation by the Fenagh lads. When you consider that the Ballinamore lads beat Naomh Caillin in the League final earlier this year and beat them again in the ordinary round of the championship it was a most unexpected final tally. No doubt there will be other chapters to this great saga in the years ahead. Final score, 5-13 to 2-8.

Foireann: Darren Maxwell, Darragh Reynolds, James Hamill, Mark Maguire, Cathal McHugh, Damien Creaven, Christy Maguire, Darragh Murphy, Niall McGovern(0-1), Conor McGrath, Adam Goldrick, Barry McGovern, Tom Prior, Kevin Mullen(1-6), Jamie Sweeney (1-0). Subs: Stephen Flynn for M Maguire, Daire Gleeson for J Sweeney.

Our Ladies lost the Intermediate Semi-final to Bornacoola on Sunday. They had a bad first half and were behind by 4-6 to 3-0 at half time. A much better second half brought them within three points but it ended 5-8 to 5-5 in Bornacoola’s favour. Overall it was a great disappointment to go out of the championship having gone so close to taking the title last year.

Foireann: Niamh Smith, Rachel Gilheaney, Emma O’Dell, Ellen Wrynn, Róisín McHugh, Kirby Gilgunn, Aoibheann Flynn, Michelle Fanning, Ciara O’Dowd (0-1), Eilish O’Dowd (2-1), Orla McWeeney (0-1), Leighanne Flynn, Laura O’Dowd (0-1), Deborah Gilheany (1-1), Maeve Gleeson. Subs: Aoibheann Curran, Celine Charles, Cáit Connaughton, Áine Martin, Claire Fanning.

Minor Girls Reach Final

Having lost the Intermediate semi final on Saturday it was better luck for many of the same players as the took the field for the Minor 9 a side semi final just 24 hours later on Sunday. Seven of the nine had played on Saturday but they made no mistake and beat Drumkeerin by 5-13 to 2-6. They were ahead by 2-10 to 0-3 at half time. They now await the final against Cloone, Fenagh or Dromahair.

Foireann: Bláithín Sharpley, Ellen Wrynn, Róisín McHugh, Aoibheann Flynn, Laura O’Dowd (1-2), Eilish O’Dowd (0-5), Maeve Gleeson (0-5), Aoibheann Curran (1-1), Leighanne Flynn (3-0). Subs: Francis Farry and Lisa Maguire. Speedy recovery to Aoibheann Curran and Eilish O’Dowd who picked up injuries.

Successful Motion to Croke Park

Did anyone notice the familiar “Stewards, end of match positions” is no longer heard in Croke Park on big match days. It was a terribly intrusive announcement, dreaded by managers, players and supporters. Well it is gone, as a result of a motion from Seán O’Heslin’s club which went to Co Convention and subsequently to Croke Park . It has been implemented since the 3 June this year.

Please no training on the main Pitch

Our main pitch has taken a battering this past few weeks, with incessant rain and a lot of games. All mentors are asked to keep all training off the main pitch and all underage games, boys and girls should be played on the second pitch for the next few weeks.

Seniors in Final battle against relegation

Our seniors lost to Carrigallen on Saturday last in the relegation semi-final. It has turned out to be a dismal championship year for our seniors and another bad performance left Carrigallen deserving winners. By half-time we were down 1-5 to 0-4. In fairness there was an amount of good effort in the second half and at one stage it was 1-7 to 0-8 and things looked hopeful. However Carrigallen got four points in a row and we never looked like bridging the gap. It ended 1-12 to 0-10. It is last chance saloon against Kiltubrid, probably the weekend after next.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Matthew Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, John Fanning, David McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, Philip Murphy, Stephen McTague (0-1), Shane Moran, David Duignan, Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney (0-3), Ronan O’Rourke, James McWeeney (0-4), Sean Murray. Scéalta na Seachtaine 20 Lúnasa 2012

Seniors in Relegation play-off.

Our seniors will play Carrigallen in a relegation play-off semi final on Saturday in Cloone at 7.00pm. On Sunday our Junior A team play Drumkeerin in Drumshanbo at 12.00 in a play off for a quarter final place in the Junior A Championship.

Juniors lose in A Championship

Our Junior A team lost heavily for the second week running. They lost to Leitrim Gaels by 2-20 to 0-8. They were probably unfortunate to be paired with the best two teams in Junior A but they have one final chance to make the quarter finals. They will be involved in a play-off with Drumkeerin. It is amazing the difference between league and championship. Our Junior A team beat Leitrim Gaels by 4-13 to 0-10 earlier this year and we stand in fourth place in the Division 3 League while Leitrim Gaels are in 14th and last place, without a single win. However, the make up of our team would be different while their’s would be the same. Team on Saturday was: Denis Dolan, Keelan McHugh, Rory O’Rourke, Kevin O’Connor, Shane Creamer, Johnny McWeeney, Anthony McTague, Conor McTague, Ryan Gavin, Tommy McCormack, Paul Prior, Andrew Burns, Brian Cafferty, Brian Beirne, Éamon Walsh. Subs: Sean McCartin, and Cyril Óg Smith.

Junior B team loses in B Championship

Our third team suffered a heavy defeat to Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday morning in Drumshanbo. The scale of this defeat was not on the cards as we ran the same team to six points in the league and this was Glencar/Manorhamilton’s third team also. We started well with points from Adrian Gallogly and Seán McCartin but Manorhamilton, playing with a fairly strong breeze, led by 1-7 to 0-3 at half time. Goals beat us in the second half and lack of fitness too. It ended 4-11 to 1-6. Our other games are against Naomh Muire and Fíonach Naomh Caillin.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey (0-1f), David Earley, Kevin Banks, Cormac Ó Súilleabháin, Neil Hughes, Kevin Prior, Éamon Walsh (0-1), Ronan Sharpley, Jason Kellett, Jim McTague (1-0), Ciarán Murray, Seán McCartin (0-3,1f), Daryl McFarland, Stephen Beirne, Adrian Gallogly (0-1). Subs: Alan Prior for D McFarland, Adrian Murphy for K Prior, James Boyle for S McCartin, Peter Reynolds for S Beirne .

Minor Girls in 9 a side Championship Semi final

Our girls’ minor team beat Fenagh in a game which finished close at the end. The final score was 6-8 to 5-8. They are now in the semi-final

Foireann: Bláithín Sharpley, Róisín McHugh, Aoibheann Flynn (1-1), Ellen Wrynn, Laura O’Dowd (2-4), Eilish O’Dowd (0-3), Maeve Gleeson (1-0), Leighanne Flynn (1-0), Aoibheann Curran(1-0): Subs used: Lisa Maguire, Frances Farry, Siobhan McTague.

Scéalta na Seachtaine 13 Lúnasa 2012

Seniors out of Championship

For the first time since the current Senior Championship system was introduced in 2003, we will have to face a relegation play-off. It is also the first time since 2004 that we failed to win a match in the Senior Championship. Over the last few years we have been lucky to qualify for the quarter finals by winning one match out of two. This year looked more promising given that there were three games to be played. However it hasn’t been a good championship for us, to say the least. To end up in forth place in a group of four is as bad as it can get. The target now is to survive in Senior championship grade for 2013. Team on Sunday was: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Philip Murphy, David McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, David Duignan, Paul McLoughlin, Conor McTague, Stephen McTague, Shane Moran, Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney, James McWeeney, Anthony McTague. Subs used: Adrian Smith, John McWeeney, Seán Murray, John fanning.

Juniors make great start to Junior Championship

After a great win a week earlier our juniors suffered a heavy defeat against Naomh Muire in the junior championship. It ended 3-10 to 0-7. Our final game is against Gaeil Liatroma.

Minor Girls second win in 9 a side

Our minor girls, having beaten Cloone in the first round, beat Gortletteragh in the 9 a side Championship on Tuesday last. They won by 3-17 to 0-4. They play Fenagh this Tuesday. Training on Thursday evening. We hope all the girls get the results they wish for in the Leaving Cert, which will be out this week. Best of luck to our County girls who are out next Sunday.

Foireann: Aoibheann Curran, Lisa Maguire, Róisín McHugh (0-1), Ellen Wrynn, Laura O’Dowd (0-3), Eilish O’Dowd (1-2), Aoibheann Flynn (1-5), Leighanne Flynn (1-2) Maeve Gleeson (0-4, Sub: Frances Farry.

It is the one time each year when our underage players are asked to help the club with fund raising.

Under 14s

Our under 14s had a big win over Gaeil Liatroma by 9-14 to 3-10 and the way is now clear for the Final which will be against Naomh Caillin. Both teams had clear cut wins in all of their games and the final will be eagerly awaited.

Dramatic draw with Annaduff in Senior Championship

What an hour of drama this was! We were really cursing our luck with ten minutes to go. After hitting eleven wides and letting in two soft goals it looked like certain defeat. Annaduff leading by nine points, 3-5 to 0-5 with about ten minutes to go. It fell, not for the first time to Liam Ferguson, surely our most consistently inspirational player of the last decade, to take the game by the scruff of the neck. Liam went on a run of his own and finished to the net. Within minutes Shane McWeeney did the same with another solo effort and we could scarcely believe that a third player would do the exact same and that is what Shane Moran did. A third goal which stunned Annaduff. Then with time almost up, David McLoughlin almost stole it. He got clean through but his shot came off the butt of the upright. A free in ensued and Shane McWeeney pointed to give us an important lifeline as we head in to the final game next Saturday. It ended 3-6 apiece.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Matthew Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Philip Murphy, David McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson (1-0), David Duignan, Shane Moran (1-2), Paul McLoughlin, Conor McTague, Shane Murphy (0-1), Stephen McTague (0-1f), Seán Murray, Ronan O’Rourke, Shane McWeeney (1-2,2f). Subs: Anthony McTague for S Murray , Adrian Smith for R O’Rourke, John Fanning for C McTague.

Juniors make great start to Junior Championship

Bornacoola were finalists in the Division 3 league and they beat us well early on in the year in the League, so a tight game was expected. However, it was a game where goals decided the game. Andrew Burns hit two good goals and Tommy McCormack, when he came on as a sub, got two more. This along with a great performance from Conor McTague in midfield ensured victory.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Cyril Smith, Joe Murphy, Kevin O’Connor (Capt), Jack Cullen, Rory O’Rourke, Shane Creamer (0-1), Ryan Gavin (1-0), Conor McTague (1-1), Andrew Burns (2-1), Paul Prior (0-6), Brian Cafferty, Brian Beirne, Adrian Smith (0-1), Mark McGrory. Subs: Killian McHugh for J Murphy, Tommy McCormack (2-1) for B Beirne, Kevin banks for C Smith, Éamon Walsh for R Gavin.

Ladies win first Round of Intermediate Championship

Our ladies won the first rounds of the Intermediate Championship beating Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday. They led by 0-7 to 1-3 at half time and the game was level with five minutes to go. It finished 1-12 to 2-6 in our favour. This was a welcome win because Glencar/Manor beat us in the League. The next round is against Cloone in Aughavas on Sunday at 12.00. Training continues on Thursday at 7.00.

Foireann: Niamh Smith, Emma O’Dell, Rachel Gilheany, Ellen Wrynn, Róisín McHugh (0-1), Kirby Gilgunn, Katie Duignan , Michelle Fanning, Ciara O’Dowd, Aoibheann Flynn, Laura O’Dowd (0-3), Eilish O’Dowd (0-2), Deborah Gilheany (1-4), Maeve Gleeson (0-2), Leighanne Flynn. The Friday and Saturday events also drew a big crowd from Fermanagh, Tyrone, Cavan and Leitrim. Senior lose first round of Championship

Our Seniors put up a brave performance against St Mary’s on Saturday despite many absentees due to injury. They had a very good first half and led by 0-5 to 0-4 at half time. Stephen McTague, James McWeeney, Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney, and Shane Moran got points each with the latter two scoring from frees. It was looking good but St Mary’s hit a purple patch after half time which decided the outcome. They got a point first, than a goal from a harsh enough penalty and then three points to lead by 1-9 to 0-6. From then on we had the best of it and at one stage pulled it back to three points 1-10 to 0-10. However that was the nearest we got and it ended 1-12 to 0-11. With Wayne McKeon already injured and Anthony McTague, Adrian Smith and Johnny McWeeney added recently to the list, it wasn’t a bad performance. Next outing is on Saturday in Páirc Seán.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, Patrick McLoughlin, Philip Murphy, David McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson, David Duignan (0-1), Shane Moran (0-2,1f), Paul McLoughlin, Seán Murray, Shane Murphy (0-1), Stephen McTague (0-1), James McWeeney (0-1) Ronan O’Rourke, Shane McWeeney (0-5,4f). Subs: Conor McTague for Paul McLoughlin, John Fanning for James McWeeney, Rory O’Rourke for Ronan O’Rourke, Ryan Gavin for Seán Murray.

Family ties

One of our young supporters brought to my attention the number of brothers playing for Seán O’Heslin’s on Saturday. On the starting fifteen we had three Murphys, three McLoughlins and two McWeeneys. Thus over half of the starting team were from three families. Before the end of the game you can add to that two O’Rourkes and two McTagues.

Bingo

Good to see we have great crowds at our Bingo these weeks. If you haven’t been there yet or haven’t been there for a while we would be delighted to see you. €1,200 in prizes each week and over 40 prizes to be won.

Ladies Fixtures

Our Intermediate team have their first Championship game on Sunday next against Glencar/Manorhamilton in Drumkeerin at 6.15. Their next round will be against Cloone on 12 August. Training in the Park on Thursday at 6.30. Last week’s minor game did not take place. Minors will now play Bornacoola away on 7 August. Well done to Leitrim on beating Limerick and well done to Laura O’Dowd who got her first start in this game and scored 1-1. Leitrim now play the losers of Armagh and Waterford on 19 August.

Under 14s Beat Naomh Muire

Our under 14s continued their Championship campaign with a good win over Naomh Muire. It ended 4-15 to 0-6.

Scéalta na Seachtaine 23 Iúil 2012

Cluichí don deireadh seachtaine

Now that the County team’s race is run for 2012, ours is just beginning at club level. On Saturday next we play St Mary’s in Cloone in the first round of the Senior Championship at 7.30.

Stewards wanted for Saturday

On the next 3 Saturday evenings the Club are playing in the Senior Championship and we are also hosting 2 senior Championship games in the Park on those evenings. Obviously we all want to support the team but we also need people to steward in the park. We are looking for any Club people not attending the game in Cloone to make themselves available to steward on Sat evening. We need stewards from 4.30 on Sat and, as our game isn’t until 7.30, maybe some people could help out before going to Cloone. If you’re available to steward for all or part of the evening please text Alan Banks on 086 8201001.

Bingo

Good to see we have great crowds at our Bingo these weeks. If you haven’t been there yet or haven’t been there for a while we would be delighted to see you. €1,200 in prizes each week and over 40 prizes to be won.

There is a major programme of events on the Thursday and Friday with many notable writers present. Admission to all events is free. Booking is necessary for Friday and Saturday. The project is funded by the International Fund for Ireland . To book ring Leitrim Co Library (Caroline McCartin) at 071 9645546. We ask all of our club members and supporters to be there on the opening night for the sports discussion, remember it is all free of charge and booking is not necessary on the opening night.

Under 14s Beat Fenagh St Caillin’s

The saga between Seam O’Heslin’s and St Caillin’s continues and another chapter was played last Thursday evening in the Park. Again it was a close game with the lead switching on a number of occasions. The decisive score came in the final minutes when Barry McGovern scored a great goal to put O’Heslin’s ahead by 2-13 to 1-12 and that’s how it finished.

Foireann: Darren Maxwell, Darragh Reynolds, James Hamill, Mark Maguire, Cathal McHugh, Damien Creaven, Christy Maguire, Niall McGovern, Darragh Murphy, Conor McGrath, Adam Goldrick, Dara Gleeson, Tom Prior, Kevin Mullen, Barry McGovern. Cluichí don deireadh seachtaine

Under 14s play Fenagh on Thursday in the Park at 7.00pm. They got a walk-over from Annaduff last week.

All Ireland Ladies Semi finals in the Park

There will be two All Ireland Ladies Minor semi finals in the Park on Saturday next. The “A” semi-final between Mayo and Tyrone will be at 2.00pm. The “B” Semi final between Cavan and Roscommon will be at 4.00pm.

Juniors Beat Glencar/Manorhamilton

Our Division 3 team is certainly the team of the moment. They won their fifth game on the trot when they beat Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday morning. This was their seventh win out of ten games and with just one game left to play they are in with a chance of making the final and promotion. After beating a fancied Melvin Gaels team a week earlier they had a more comprehensive win over Manorhamilton with a final score of 2-10 to 0-9. Ronan Sharpley, back from El Salvador , came on as a sub to play his first game in a number of years. It happened he was the only sub who travelled, a big contrast to the Melvin Gaels match when we had ten subs. Our final game is against Aughavas.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Cyril Smith, Paddy McLoughlin, Kevin O’Connor Capt), Philip Murphy, John Fanning, Jack Cullen, Conor McTague, Ryan Gavin, Andrew Burns (0-3), Paul Prior (0-3), David McLoughlin (0-1), Paul McLoughlin, Rory O’Rourke (1-3), Anthony McTague (1-0). Ronan Sharpley for C Smith.

Cycle Sponsorship

The final stage of the sponsored cycle was completed on Saturday. Thanks to all who cycled and who did bucket collection. We ask all of those who cycled to give their sponsorship money to Bríd Sullivan.

Great Ballinamore and Leitrim Supporter

George O’Rourke must be one of Leitrim’s greatest supporters. George flew into Knock on Saturday to see Leitrim beat Wicklow. He was also in Ruislip with his wife Ailse, to see Leitrim beat London . George played underage football and hurling with Seán O’Heslin’s when he came home from Scotland some years ago and he developed a great grá for Gaelic games. He now referees both football and hurling matches and he is also a shinty referee. He keeps in constant touch with all of the game in Ireland through the various websites including Seán O’Heslin’s. Well done George.

Best Wishes

We wish a speedy recovery to Francis Duignan, Main St. Francis is a former club Chairman. Hope to see you back at the Lotto soon, Francis.

Hurling Helmets

A number of players have helmets belonging to the club. Please return to Paddy O’Connor immediately.

Seniors Lose in Shield to Manorhamilton

After four wins, our seniors lost for the first time in the Shield when going down to Glencar/Manorhamilton by 0-11 to 0-6. At half time it was 0-6 to 0-3 to Manor.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, John Fanning, Matthew Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, Philip Murphy, Liam Ferguson, David McLoughlin, David Duignan, Paul McLaughlin, Shane Murphy, Anthony McTague, Andrew Burns, Ryan Gavin, Ronan O’Rourke, Shane McWeeney. Subs used:

Cycle to Páirc Seán

On Saturday a number of our cyclists will be taking to the road again to cycle to the Wicklow game. We didn’t get a permit to hold a bucket collection outside the Mayo game but we will be doing so in Carrick on Saturday. We also need help with the bucket collection.

Hurling Féile

Well done to our under 14 hurlers who gave an excellent performance in Division 6 at Féile na nGael. They played three games in their group, beating the host club St Mark’s, by 1-6 to 0-2, losing to Cootehill, Cavan by 1-3 to 0-2 and drawing with Setanta from Dublin at 1-4 to 2-1. Ironically, Setanta beat Cootehill in the Final so Ballinamore were extremely close to winning the Division. Comhghairdeas to Paddy O’Connor and to all of his helpers.

Park Work – help needed

Due to a break between Schemes in the Park for the next few weeks we will need some help to clean dressing rooms, and general work on the Park. Anyone available please come to the Park on this Friday at 8.00. Help will also be needed on the August weekend of the Readers Group Symposium and the Harvest Festival. Also, with club Championship fixtures coming up in the Park we will need more stewards and help with lining of the pitch etc. Please contact Alan Banks if you can help.

Comhbhrón

Sympathy is expressed to the O’Rourke Family, Church St on the death of Madeline last weekend. Go ndéana Dia trócaire uirthi.

Comhghairdeas

Best wishes to Ciarán Maxwell and Clare Donohoe who are getting married in Cavan on next Saturday

Executive Meeting

There will be an executive meeting this Thursday at 8.30pm in the clubhouse.

Fáilte Abhaile – Ronan Sharpley

Welcome back to Ronan Sharpley who has returned to Ballinamore after nearly four years working in El Salvador . Ronan spent his time working as a civil engineer building houses for local communities using locally sourced materials and developed a great affinity with the people there. On Saturday last Ronan togged out with our Division 3 team, the first time he was available for selection the past four years. Ronan was an outstanding player at underage level and he captained the team that won the Under 12 Championship in 1996. He also won a minor championship with Oughteragh Gaels in 2002. He also excelled at senior level before he went to El Salvador . Ronan has now decided on a new direction in life. He is joining the Franciscan Order in Killarney in September. Ronan was very impressed by the contribution of the Franciscan Order to the spiritual and temporal well-being of the people of El Salvador . We wish Ronan the best of luck in the new road he has chosen. Ta súil againn Ronan go mbeidh tú in ann cluiche a imirt dúinn ó am go chéile, fad is atá tú in Éirinn.

Changes to Lotto

Our Lotto continues to be a major fundraiser for the club and we are indebted to our sellers and buyers for their contribution to its success. The Monday draw is also a big social occasion for the club members and Lotto sellers. We are now offering three entries for €5 and the one envelope will accommodate three entries. We would like to confirm that a person who buys one envelope with three entries will get three chances in the night’s draw, if the jackpot is not won. The €40 prizes have been reduced from five to four but the two prizes for those present on the night remains the same.

Scéalta na Seachtaine 2 Iúil 2012

Cluichí don deireadh seachtaine

Division 3 against Melvin Gaels on Saturday in the Park at 7.30. Senior shield against Glencar Manorhamilton on Sunday in Manorhamilton at 3.00.

Seniors Lose

Our seniors lost to Aughawillan in the League on Saturday last. They started well and were 0-4 to 0-1 up early in the game. However, Aughawillan took control for the remainder of the half and led by 1-6 to 0-5 at half time. We had the better of much of the second half but could only score three points, all from Shane McWeeney and two of them from frees. We were unfortunate in that second half in that Aughawillan capitalised on two errors to take goals, which were the only scores they got in the half. We missed the services of our two county players, and indeed a few other long-term injuries and this did not help. An scór ag an deireadh 3-6 in aghaidh 0-8.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, John Fanning, Matthew Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, Anthony McTague, David Duignan, Liam Ferguson, Paul McLoughlin, Ryan Gavin, Seán Murray (0-1), John McWeeney (0-2), Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney(0-5), Adrian Smith, James McWeeney. Subs: Stephen McTague for R Gavin, David McLoughlin for James McWeeney, Andrew Burns for A McTague, Ronan O’Rourke for J Fanning, Rory O’Rourke for A Smith

Cycle to Páirc Seán

As a follow on to our cycle to Castlebar we will now be cycling to Páirc Séan in Carrick on Saturday week to the Wicklow match. We did not get permission to have our usual bucket collection in Castlebar but the way is clear to do so in Carrick. We will be asking as many as possible of our cyclists to do the Carrick run. It should be no bother after the long journey to Castlebar. Please contact Bríd Sullivan if you are free to cycle on Saturday week.

Girls Lose in Under 14 Final

The Sean O’Heslin’s under 14 girls reached the final, where the met neighbours St Bridget’s. The O’Heslin’s girls seemed to take control of the first half with great defending in the back line and some great saves from the goalie. The girls played some lovely football throughout the first half of the game. Going in at half time with 4 points up was a great start. After a well taking goal was disallowed, because of a square ball this seemed to have its effects on the game for us from there on in.We lost control of the game within the last 10 mins as St Bridget’s seem to push on to find some scores before the final whistle. You couldn’t fault the O’Heslin’s Girls, they never gave up and stayed fighting right to the end. They were very unlucky to lose the game, hopefully next year we can go that step further and lift the cup.

Team: Niamh Toolan, Kate Reynolds, Cait Connaughton, Katie Cullen, Cloe Mullen, Aoife McCartin, Francis Farry, Eilish O’Dowd, Emma McGovern, Ciara McGoldrick, Maeve Hamill, Grace Wrynn, Rachel Creamer, Aideen Maxwell, Leah Sweeney, Aoife Murphy, Shaneen McGovern, Elaoishe Martin Alannah Smyth, Aoibheann McGoldrick, Colette McGirl, Hannah Banks.

A Big Thank you to Martina Maxwell and Samantha Mullen for all their help with training the girls this year. Thank you also to both Sean Reynolds and Ciara O’Dowd for all there help right up to the final. Last but not least to the girls themselves for there hard work and dedication throughout the year.

Under 12 Girls

Girls Under 12 League has begun, with 2 games played so far, losing out to Aughawillan away and then winning against Dromahair at home. The girls put in a great effort in both games and will have a lot of football this year with a double round in the 13 a side league.

Hurling Féile

Best of luck to our under 14 hurlers who are off to Féile na nGael in Dublin this weekend. They will be staying with St Mark’s club in Tallaght. Míle buíochas to all who supported our table quiz last Friday.

Park Work

We are organising a meitheal to do some work in the Park, on Friday evening at 8.00. Please come if you can.

Cycle to Castlebar – Well done to all

Our long-awaited Sponsored cycle to Castlebar took place in Saturday last. A total of 33 cyclists made the long 115km (73 miles) trip starting at 8.00am. It rained from just beyond the half-way mark but it didn’t stop any of the cyclists from reaching the “promised land”. A good night was had by all and a well earned rest. Unfortunately the result on Sunday didn’t go our way. Our thanks to all of the cyclists and their sponsors and our helpers: We would ask all cyclists to get in the sponsorship to Bríd Sullivan as soon as possible.

Our Cycling team

33 cyclists took part in our sponsored cycle; some of them did the trip at a different time due to clashes of other events. Those who took part were:  Patsy Connaughton, John Darcy, Joe Dolan, Joe Feely, Cara & Joe Gilheaney, Lynda Harte, Ollie & Elizabeth Honeyman, Diarmaid Keegan, Gerry Logan, Daryl McFarland, Raymond, Philip and Desmond McHugh, Patrick Beezer McKiernan, P J & Paul McLoughlin, Ruairí, Sean & Bríd Ó Súilleabháin, Michael & John Quinn, Peter & Gerard Reynolds, Ciaran Smyth,  Michael Duignan, John Fanning, Conor Harte, Tony McGrath, Seamus Mullen, Paddy Prior, Adrian Smith.

Our back up team included Paddy O Connor, Andrew O’Rourke, Pádraig McKeon, Doreen Honeyman, Cyril Smith and Steve who took the bikes home safely, all the families who helped with transportation of the cyclists home. Thanks also to Tomas McWeeney for sponsorship. Finally, getting all the pledged sponsorship in is the last part of the jigsaw and the Cycle Organiser, Bríd Sullivan, will be delighted to hear from all who took part in due course. (See picture of some of our cyclists before they started off on Sunday under “New Pictures”)

Girls Lose in Under 14 Final

Our under 14 girls were beaten by St Brigid’s (Aughawillan /Aughnasheelin) in the under 14 Championship final last Wednesday. There was only three points in it in the end. Well dome to the girls and their mentors.

Harvest Festival

Our next major fundraising and social event is the Harvest Festival. This will take place on Sunday 5 August. Already a large number of people have committed to taking tables, but we would be delighted to hear from more hosts who would organise a table of 10 people and provide a basic meal. This is a big fundraiser for the club and we need the funds badly at the moment. It is also a great night out with about 400 people in Attendance. There will be music and entertainment and a bar on site.

Castlebar – only 72 miles away

The big day has come, not alone for Leitrim footballers but for our loyal band of cyclists who will head off for Caisleán a’ Bharraigh at 8.00 am on Saturday morning. P J and Paul McLoughlin have already cleared the route and removed any potential ambushes: they went last Sunday. For every one else it is 8.00am at the chapel on Saturday morning. This is also the last week to collect sponsorship and if you haven’t been asked already and would like to sponsor someone, Bríd Sullivan would be delighted to hear from you. This is the fourth year that Bríd has organised this cycle, with help this year from Patrick McKiernan and Ollie Honeyman. This is the longest journey yet so we hope for a good dry day, with the wind to our backs and a Leitrim win on Sunday. Go n-éirí libh go léir agus bí cúramach ar na bóithre.

Win for Juniors in Division 3

Our second team had a good win over Leitrim Gaels on Sunday. They led all the way and it finished 4-13 to 0-10. Foireann: Denis Dolan, Cyril Smith, Paddy McLoughlin, Kevin O’Connor, Shane Creamer, Paul McLoughlin, Jack Cullen, Stephen McTague (0-1), Ryan Gavin (0-1), Andrew Burns (1-2), John Fanning (0-2), David McLoughlin (1-0), Tommy McCormack (1-4), Rory O’Rourke (1-1), Anthony McTague (0-2). Subs: Joe Murphy for T McCormack, James Boyle for C Smith, Sean McCartin for J Fanning.

Senior win again in Shield

Our seniors kept their unbeaten run in the Shield and remain in top position. They beat Leitrim Gaels by 0-14 to 0-11. After a great first half when they led by ten points they nearly let it slip in the second half as Leitrim Gaels, with the wind made a great recovery.

Parish Cycle

On Monday last we had our Parish Cycle and all age groups from ten years olds to several multiples of ten took part. There was an opportunity to ride a tandem and you could also get your bicycle repaired and tuned up by Gerard Lynch. The deluge of rain didn’t damp the enthusiasm.

Girls in Under 14 Final

Our under 14 girls are in the 13 a side championship final on Wednesday in the Park at 8.00. St Brigid’s are the opposition. The 11 a side B Final between Kiltubrid and St Josephs is on before it at 6.45.

Good Luck to our players in Connacht Championship

We wish the best of luck to Wayne McKeon, Shane Moran and Philip Farrelly our senior panellists on Sunday. Also best wishes to Kirby, Laura and Ciara in the Connacht Ladies Intermediate Championship on Sunday in Castlebar.

Table Quiz

Ballinamore Hurlers are heading for Féile na nGael in Dublin on the first weekend of July. They are organising a fund raising quiz in Gay Prior’s on Thursday 28 June, starting at 9.00. Table of 4 is €40. Please support.

Schools teams in Finals

Both the Boys and Girls schools were in finals last week. They Girls won their final and the boys were beaten by Mohill; Well done to both of them

Readers Group

Seán O’Heslin’s are the main organisers of the Readers Group project which goes by the title “Dialogues Through Literature”. This project is funded by the International Fund for Ireland and involves extensive meetings and events between Readers Groups in Leitrim, Cavan Fermanagh and Tyrone. For example, there was an event in An Creagán, Co Tyrone on Saturday last where groups of people who read books “as Gaeilge” from Leitrim, Cavan and Tyrone met and heard a talk about the last native Irish speakers from Tyrone. Interestingly there were pockets of Gaeltacht areas in Tyrone up the late 1950s. There was also a visit to the homes of some of the last speakers. In August there will be a major symposium in the Park, in a marquee. This will involve three days of interesting lectures, and the event will be open free to the public. More details later.

Comhbhrón

Sympathy is extended to the McGarry Family, St Brigid’s St on the death of Paddy McGarry. Go ndéana Dia trócaire air.

Comhghairdeas

Tá a lán póstaí na laethanta seo. Comhghairdeas to Stacey McCormack and Paul McLoughlin who got married recently. There are two weddings this weekend. Thomas McLoughlin and Aoife Purcell are getting married this Saturday which hastened P J and Paul’s cycle to Castlebar last Sunday. Also Eoin Cribbin and Rosie Moyne are getting married this weekend. Congratulation also to Paul and Michelle Prior on the birth of their daughter Maria.

Cycle to Castlebar

Leitrim’s’ welcome win in London means we can now definitely say our sponsored cycle will be to Castlebar on the weekend of 23/24 June. It is open to everyone to choose whether they wish to cycle on the Saturday or the Sunday.  It is now important that all those intending to cycle confirm that with Bríd Sullivan, Patrick McKiernan or Ollie Honeyman and work on collecting sponsorship. This is a great challenge to all club members to cycle to Castlebar, and to raise much needed funds for the club in the process.

Harvest Festival

Plans are afoot to make this year’s Harvest Festival the biggest and best yet. It will take place on the Sunday of the August Bank Holiday weekend. People will be asked in the next week to hosts tables. Again this is a great social event and also a big fundraiser for the club. We ask all club members and supporters to help us.

Under 16s Lose League Final

Our under 16s lost the League final to St Manchan’s by a comprehensive margin on Friday last. Up to half time they were doing well and actually led by a point at the break. However, St Manchan’s swept ahead in the second half and won by 4-17 to 2-6. The scoreline didn’t do justice to our lads’ efforts. See full match report in Leitrim Observer sports pages.

Foireann:  Darren Maxwell, Adam Goldrick, Niall McGovern, James Hamill, Fergal Curran, Brian Leyden, Paddy Connaughton, Dean McGovern, Peter Reynolds, Dónal Feely, Kevin Mullen, Oisín McCaffrey Dara Murphy, Luke Murphy, Barry McGovern.

Under 14 Boys win Féile na nGael

Féile: On Tuesday evening our U14 team beat Gortlettragh in the Féile final. Our club will now represent the county at Féile level once again. It is being held in Dublin this year on the 5th of July. In the game itself Ballinamore built up a commanding lead in the first half. Try as Gortlettragh might they could not bridge the gap in the second half and Ballinamore ran out worthy winners. It was an excellent performance by the players with great skill being demonstrated throughout with each member of the panel contributing to the win. The future of the club looks very bright with this talented group of players. Team: Alan Doonan, Ben McGirl, James Hamill, Adam Goldrick, Damian Creaven, Niall McGovern, Aaron Hoare, Kevin Mullen, Aaron McLoughlin, Ciallan O’Rourke, Darragh Murphy, Cormac Sammon, Jarlath Scollan, Darren Maxwell, Barry McGovern. Subs: Ciaran Cullen, Cathal McHugh, Tom Prior, Stephen Flynn, James Maguire, Nathan McCartin. Injured: Darragh Maxwell.

Seniors beat Gortletteragh in Shield

Our seniors turned in an excellent second half performance to win well against Gortletteragh on Sunday. In the first half it wasn’t looking that well with Gortletteragh ahead by three points at one stage. By half time that margin was reduced to one, with Gortletteragh ahead by 0-8 to 0-7. Two points from Steven McTague and Philip Murphy stood out. We did have the wind behind us in the second half but that really would not explain the excellent performance right from the start. We got thirteen points in the second half, and all of them from play. That is something to remember. Some of these were exceptional scores. Shane McWeeney, Anthony McTague and Andrew Burns got some great early ones. Then when Gortletteragh got a goal, David Duignan made a great run and scored a wonderful point. Seán McCartin was no sooner on the field than he fired over another great point. In the end we won by 0-20 to 1-9.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Matthew Murphy, John Fanning, Philip Murphy (0-1), John McWeeney, Liam Ferguson, Steven McTague (0-1), David Duignan (0-1), Anthony McTague (0-2), James McWeeney (0-2), Shane Murphy (0-2), Shane McWeeney (0-6), Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Sean Murray. Subs: Andrew Burns (0-3) for S Murray, David McLoughlin for L Ferguson , Seán McCartin (0-1) for S McWeeney .

Ladies Football

Our adult ladies lost to Glencar/Manorhamilton on Sunday last by 6-6 to 2-11. Their six goal tally made it very difficult to match although the game was much closer than the score suggests. An fhoireann a bhí againn: Niamh Smith, Emma O’Dell, Aoibheann Flynn, Katie Duignan, Kirby Gilgunn, Róisín McHugh, Laura O’Dowd (2-3),Ciara O’Dowd, Leighanne Flynn(0-2),Michelle Fanning, Eilís O’Dowd (0-2), Aoibheann Curran, Deborah Gilheany (0-4). Subs: Áine Martin, Rachel Gilheany. Best of luck to all the girls who are sitting their Junior and Leaving cert exams shortly. A speedy recovery to Deborah Gilheany who sustained an injury on Sunday.

Sean O’Heslin’s Under 14 Girls

Seán O’Heslin’s under 14 girls have been in great form in the 13 a side league. They beat Allen Gaels a couple of weeks ago, and then they beat Dromahair. Last week they had another comprehensive win when they beat St Mary’s by 4-16 to 1-1. St Mary’s put in a good performance up to half-time when the score was 1-7 to 0-1. However the Ballinamore girls were in devastating form in the second half and ran away easy winners. Remarkably, all of their scores came from play with some outstanding points from Eilish O’Dowd and Emma McGovern and two exceptional goals from Ciara McGoldrick.

Foireann: Shaneen McGovern, Aoife McCartin, Katie Cullen, Kate Reynolds, Cloe Mullen, Cáit Connaughton, Frances Farry (Capt), (0-1), Eilish O’Dowd (1-5), Emma McGovern (0-6), Rachel Creamer (0-3), Maeve Hamill (1-0), Grace Wrynn (0-1), Ciara McGoldrick (2-0). Seniors Beat Kiltubrid

Our seniors moved to third place in the Division 1 table after beating Kiltubrid on Saturday evening last. This win was anything but easy and a late point from Wayne McKeon that just crossed the crossbar ensured victory. We led by 0-5 to 1-1 at half time after dominating most of the half. Our points came from Tommy McCormack, Shane Moran, Shane McWeeney (free), James McWeeney (free) and Stephen McTague. Despite playing into the wind and the wintry sun in the second half we got four points on the trot with James McWeeney our hero getting three good points and Shane Moran one. However we collapsed from then on and Kiltubrid got five in a row to level it. When a draw looked the likely outcome Wayne McKeon’s long drive dropped just inside the crossbar but while the goalie fisted it out, it had in fact gone beyond the crossbar. It ended 0-10 to 1-6 in our favour. We are currently in third place two points behind Glencar/Manorhamilton and Mohill

Foireann:  Denis Dolan, John Fanning, David Duignan, Philip Murphy, Anthony McTague , Wayne McKeon (0-1), Liam Ferguson, Ryan Gavin, Shane Moran (0-2), Stephen McTague (0-1), James McWeeney (0-4), Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney (0-1), Adrian Smith, Tommy McCormack (0-1): Subs: Rory O’Rourke for S McTague, Andrew Burns for R Gavin, David McLoughlin for A McTague  Kevin O’Connor for T McCormack.

Senior lose to Glencar/Manorhamilton

Our seniors hit a hard one on Saturday. After three good wins we were really outclassed by Glencar/Manorhamilton. Like Cork hurlers in the League Final, our game was over at half-time when the score was 1-8 to 0-1 for Manor. The second half was much the same and it ended 1-16 to 0-4. In fairness we are seriously depleted with injuries at the moment and we were holding our own until a fluke goal put us six point down. However, there is now doubt Glencar/Manorhamilton are top of the pile in Leitrim at the moment.

Foireann:  Denis Dolan, John Fanning, David Duignan, Philip Murphy, Anthony McTague , Wayne McKeon, Liam Ferguson, Ryan Gavin, Shane Moran (0-1), Tommy McCormack, John McWeeney , Sean Murray, Shane McWeeney (0-2,1f), Adrian Smith, James McWeeney (0-1f),. Juniors beat Gortletteragh in Division 3

Our second team got back to winning ways on Sunday with a 2-10 to 0-13 victory over Gortletteragh. This was a good win over a strong Gortletteragh team.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Cyril Óg Smith, Jason Kellett, Kevin O’Connor, David McLoughlin (0-1), Paddy McLoughlin, Shane Creamer, Ryan Gavin, Paul McLoughlin, Andrew Burns (0-1), Paul Prior (1-4), Anthony McTague (0-2), Tommy McCormack, Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Stephen McTague (0-1), Subs: Éamon Walsh (1-0) for P McLoughlin, Sean McCartin for T McCormack.

Junior B team draw with Gortletteragh in final League game

Our second junior team completed their league programme for 2012 with a draw against Gortletteragh on Monday. Division 5 had just eight teams this year due to the restructuring of Divisions 2 and 3 which gave them two more teams each. The good news was that we fielded in all games, no walk-overs this year. Monday’s game was played at 13 a side, to facilitate Gortletteragh, in line with new arrangements, but we had a full team available. Gortletteragh led by 2-8 to 0-4 at half time, but second half goals from Andrew Burns, James Boyle and Daryl McFarland changed all and we levelled it at 3-12 a piece.

Foireann: Diarmuid Keegan, Cyril Óg Smith, David Early, David McLoughlin, Jack Cullen, Alan Prior, Jason Kellett, Stephen McTague, John Christie, Adrian Murphy, Andrew Burns, Sean McCartin, Daryl McFarland. Subs used: James Boyle and Peter Reynolds.

Under 16s Progress in League

Our under 16s have been making great progress in the League. Over the last week they beat Dromahair by 3-17 to 1-4 and on Monday they beat Annaduff by 2-8 to 0-12. The 15 a side league this year has just four teams and the league is being played on a double round basis. O’Heslin’s have already been Mohill so they have beaten all teams in their group and now advance to the second meetings with each team. On Friday next they play Mohill.

Senior beat Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher in the League

Our Seniors got their third win in four games when they beat Glenfarne/Kilty in Blacklion on Saturday. On a very cold evening on the beautiful shores of Lake MacNean and an equally beautiful pitch, this was a hard won game and a good outcome for O’Heslin’s considering the line up of injured players at the moment. It was 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time with our points from Anthony McTague and the rest all from McWeeneys, Johnny two, Shane two and James one. Despite being against the wind in the second half we started in flying fashion. Two great points from Shane McWeeney and then two equally great ones from Wayne McKeon, plus a pointed free from Shane McWeeney left us seven ahead. It looked good until Glenfarne got a goal and a point. Shane McWeeney got a point back but Glenfarne got two to leave just two between the teams. However, not for the first time, Liam Ferguson cropped up to get a point and Shane McWeeney got the insurance one. It ended 0-14 to 1-7. Not bad.

Foireann:  Denis Dolan, John Fanning, David Duignan, Philip Murphy, Anthony McTague (0-1), Paul McLoughlin, Liam Ferguson (0-1), Ryan Gavin, Wayne McKeon (0-2), Sean Murray, John McWeeney (0-2), Shane McWeeney (0-7,3f), Adrian Smith, James McWeeney (0-1f), Tommy McCormack. Subs: Kevin O’Connor for P McLoughlin, Stephen McTague for T McCormack, Rory O’Rourke for John McWeeney.

Juniors lose to Allen Gaels in Division 3

A week ago our Junior A team beat St Mary’s, a team unbeaten until then. On Sunday last we faced Allen Gaels, a team that hadn’t won a match after four outings, and they beat us. We had five different starters from the team that shocked St Mary’s a week earlier, whether that had any bearing on the result we don’t know, but the result was a surprise. We were behind 0-9 to 1-4 at half time and then within minutes of the restart Adrian Smith deflected the ball to the net, and Anthony McTague made a great run before finishing to the net to put us ahead by 3-4 to 0-12. However within a minute all the hard work was undone when Allen Gaels got a goal. Many chances were missed at his stage but we got within two points again. Then a very open defence let Allen Gaels in for a goal. Paul Prior goaled from a late penalty but it was too late. It ended 2-14 to 4-6 for Allen Gaels.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Shane Creamer, Philip Murphy, Kevin O’Connor, David McLoughlin (0-1), John Fanning, Jack Cullen, Ryan Gavin, Brian Beirne, Tommy McCormack (0-1), Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Paul Prior (1-0), Andrew Burns (0-1), Adrian Smith (2-0), Anthony McTague (1-2). Subs: Kevin Banks for B Beirne, Éamon Walsh for T McCormack, Diarmuid Keegan for J Cullen

Cluichí don Deireadh Seachtaine

Seniors play Glenfarne on Saturday in Glenfarne at 7pm. Division 3 game on Sunday at home to Allen Gaels at 4pm. Under 16 League on Tuesday next, 1 May away to Dromahair at 7pm.

Under 14s win League title.

Our under 14s brought the Under 14 (15 a side) trophy back to Ballinamore after a thrilling League Final against Fenagh St Caillin’s on Sunday evening. This was a wonderful game that created great excitement for both sets of supporters and great credit is due to both teams. Both sides had their periods of dominance but our second half performance was outstanding. Fenagh led by 0-8 to 1-3 at half-time. Our backs held Fenagh to just two points in this half while our forwards got 1-7. Final score was 2-10 to 1-10. Every player played his part but the outstanding player afield was Kevin Mullen. His two goals and seven points total was, in the end, the difference between the sides. We must pay tribute to a great Fenagh team. Two years ago they beat Ballinamore in the Under 12 Championship final. All the indications are that over the next few years we will see a saga being played out between Ballinamore and Fenagh at under 16 and Minor level, reminiscent of the great Ballinamore/Aughawillan senior rivalry of times gone by. That can only be good for both sides and both sides will have their days in the sun. Last Sunday was truly Ballinamore’s. The trophy was presented to Captain James Hamill by Cathaoirleach, Coiste na nÓg, Terence Boyle.  Comhghairdeas to mentors; Conor Harte, Colm Reilly, Adrian Gallogly and Francis Maguire. See full match report in Leitrim Observer.

Foireann: Darren Maxwell, Darragh Reynolds, Damien Creaven, Stephen Flynn, Adam Goldrick, James Hamill (Capt), Christy Maguire, Niall McGovern (0-1), Cathal McHugh, Jamie Sweeney, Kevin Mullen (2-7), Conor McGrath, Mark Maguire, Darragh Murphy, Barry McGovern (0-2). Subs: Tom Prior, Dara Gleeson, Jack Gallogly, John Conway, Thomas D’Arcy.

Change of Fortunes for Ballinamore at under 14 level

The under 14 leagues started in 1993, so this is the twentieth year they were run. Seán O’Heslin’s have been in the final on each of the last four years and have won three of them. We lost last year’s final to Mohill but beat Glencar/Manor in 2009, beat Mohill in 2010 and Fenagh in 2012. The remarkable thing is that in the previous 16 years, since the Leagues started in 1993, we never ever got as far as a final (15 a side), not even once. An bhfuil ré nua ag teacht?

Cycle Launch

We will be having a launch of our sponsored cycle very shortly. All those who have committed to cycle will be invited and we will also be asking mentors of all teams, adult, underage and ladies to come to the launch. More details later.

Ladies Football

Ladies game v Dromahair was called off last Sunday. Next game against Manorhamilton on Sunday 6 May in the Park. Training on Friday at 7.30 Ladies Co team play Down in the Division 3 semi-final on Sunday in Clones at 2.00. Best of luck to Kirby, Ciara and Laura and all of the girls.

Juniors beat St Mary’s in Division 3

Our Junior A team had a very significant win over St Mary’s on Saturday. St Mary’s had been leading Division 3 and were unbeaten in their three previous games. This was a great all-round performance which saw Ballinamore winning by four points, 1-11 to 1-7. A goal by Adrian Smith early in the second half gave Ballinamore a four point lead which they never lost.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Kevin O’Connor (Capt), Jason Kellett, Shane Creamer, Jack Cullen, John Fanning, David McLoughlin, Ryan Gavin (0-1), Paul McLoughlin (0-1), Anthony McTague, Paul Prior (0-4), Tommy McCormack (0-1), Brian Cafferty (0-1), Adrian Smith (1-1), Mark McGrory (0-2). Subs: Stephen McTague for B Cafferty. Diarmuid Keegan for T McCormack.

Juniors lose to Cloone in Division 5

Our Junior B team put in a good performance against Cloone and were always in the hunt until a goal from a penalty in the second half left Cloone comfortable. Good to see John Christie fielding again for the juniors. Cloone won 2-10 to 1-9.

Foireann: Ryan Gavin (0-1), Cyril Óg Smith, Shane Creamer, David Early, David McLoughlin, Kevin Prior, Jack Cullen, Jason Kellett, Stephen McTague (0-1), Alan Prior, Diarmuid Keegan, Tommy McCormack, Daryl McFarland (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (1-1), Sean McCartin (0-5): Subs used Adrian Murphy, John Christie, Michael Costello

Minors lose to Mohill

Our Minors league run ended against Mohill on Friday. We needed a win to stay in the shakeup and early in the second half when we led by nine points that looked possible. However, when Mohill got two goals that all changed. It ended in a win for Mohill by 3-8 to 3-6.

Comhbhrón

Sympathy is extended to the Creamer Family, Stradermot on the death of Joan Gallagher, Main St. Joan was a sister-in-law of Jim Creamer who was Co Board Chairman in the 1950s and Sean O’Heslin’s Chairman in the 1940s. Go ndéana Dia trócaire uirthi.

Juniors Lose to Barr na Cúile

Our second team lost to Barr na Cúile in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin on Sunday morning. We had a very strong team on duty, most of whom had played senior on Saturday; however they were well behind Bornacoola. We started well and led by 0-5 to 0-1 and seemed to be going places. However Bornacoola took over and by half time led by 0-8 to 0-5. Two goals from Bornacoola early on finished the game and it ended 2-14 to 0-11.We did have a late burst and got five points without reply from Bornacoola, but it was too little too late.

Football in Wolverhampton

Peter McLoughlin was home from England for the past week and was watching brothers Paul and David playing on Saturday evening in Fenagh. Peter plays football with the St Mary’s club in Wolverhampton . Last year St Mary’s won the Warwickshire Intermediate Championship and Peter was playing at midfield on the winning team. Indeed pictures of the team can be seen on St Mary’s GAA Wolverhampton website. Peter tells us that they have to travel to places like Nottingham and Leicester for some games although most are around Birmingham .

Sponsored Cycle – Update

Further news on our sponsored cycle: Some people have been asking (if the cycle is to Castlebar) if they could cycle on the Saturday. That is certainly possible and Bríd Sullivan would like to hear from cyclists to know which day they would prefer to cycle. The other issue is what happens if Leitrim are not playing in Castlebar on 24 June? Well there is a Plan B and Plan C in place which we will tell about in due course. Patrick McKiernan and Ollie Honeyman are helping to recruit more cyclists and more sponsors. The annual sponsored cycle is a major fund-raiser for the club each year and one with little expenses attached to it, so we would seriously like to see more people cycling and more raising sponsorship

Juniors Beat St Mary’s

Our Junior B team are certainly doing better this year than in recent seasons and they had a good win over St Mary’s on Sunday. There was great effort throughout this game and the panel has been greatly strengthened by half a dozen of last year’s Minor Championship winning team. The first half was very even and it was 0-4 apiece at half-time. Andrew Burns was the star of the first half getting three great points. Adrian Murphy got the fourth. St Mary’s took the lead early on but two good points from Alan Prior put us back in the lead. Further points came from Adrian Murphy and Stephen McTague, and then Adrian Murphy was in the right place when the St Mary’s goalie blocked down a high ball and he finished to the net. Seán McCartin and Stephen McTague got further points and it ended 1-10 to 0-7 in our favour.

Foireann: Cian McCaffrey, Cyril Óg Smith, Kevin Prior, Shane Creamer, David McLoughlin, Rory O’Rourke, Jack Cullen, Conor McTague, Jason Kellett, Andrew Burns(0-3), Seán McCartin(0-1), Alan Prior (0-2), David Earley, Adrian Murphy (1-2), Stephen Beirne. County Under 21 Footballers

The club continues to be well represented on County teams at all levels. Against Sligo last weekend, the Leitrim U21 team had three players from the Ballinamore Sean O’Heslin’s club all announced with pride by our own Tommy Moran from his announcer position. Shane Moran was playing at centre half forward and Matthew Murphy was playing at right half back. Both put in respectable performances. Shane McWeeney was listed as a substitute and was unfortunate not to be brought on.

Laura O’Dowd – All Ireland 800m Winner

Chomhghairdeas to Laura O’Dowd who won the under 18, 800m All Ireland at the Indoor Championships in Nenagh on Saturday last. A Great achievement Laura.

Warwickshire in the Park – Emigrants meet their families

On Sunday last Leitrim hurlers played Warwickshire in the Park in the National Hurling League and while they were beaten in the end they put up a good performance in what was a good game. An interesting aspect to this game was the crowd that came to it and why they came. It wasn’t that the crowd was very big but there were more supporting Warwickshire than one might have expected. The reason most of them were there was to meet their sons or brothers, now working or studying in Birmingham or Manchester. There were people there from Limerick, Cork, Wexford and Tipperary among other places and, after the match, it was like an airport scene at Christmas as the hugged and kissed their parents, sisters and friends as they got ready to board the coach for the airport. Yes, games like this have importance beyond what meets the eye, and the power of Gaelic games to bridge the emigration gap is manifest in many ways. Sunday last was one of these.

The strength of North Leitrim

Times have changed greatly on the Leitrim Gaelic scene, geographically. This year, more than half of the first fifteen fielded by Leitrim senior footballers in most of their League games were from North Leitrim clubs. Even more surprising was that eight of the first fifteen that started for Leitrim Senior hurlers on Sunday last were from the Cluainín club, in North Leitrim. That is amazing progress for the clubs of North Leitrim considering that three quarters of the clubs in both codes are in South Leitrim.

Ladies make great start to Intermediate League

Seán O’Heslin’s ladies had a tremendous start to their intermediate league campaign last Friday night under lights in Cloone. With seven players making their adult debuts, Sean O’Heslin’s ladies overcame a gallant Cloone side who also had a number of young players on a scoreline of 2-21 to 2-2. By half-time O’Heslin’s were ahead by 1-15 to 0-0 and there was really no way back for Cloone. For the first time ever we had three sisters playing together on the same team, with Ciara, Laura and Eilís O’Dowd all playing, and indeed all of them scored. We would like to thank Loraine Brennan for facilitating us by playing the game on Friday and we also wish her a speedy recovery from the injury she sustained during the game.

Senior Shield game ends prematurely

Our senior shield game against Aughavas on Monday was abandoned after about five minutes of the second half when the Aughavas goalie, Paddy McGirl, got an accidental knock to the head and was unable to resume. We had played with the strong wind in the first half but had struggled to get scores. However we led by 1-6 to 0-0 with points from James McWeeney (2),Conor McTague (2) and Sean Murray, but a punched goal just before half-time gave us a 1-6 lead. Our players and mentors wish a speedy recovery to Paddy McGirl, the Aughavas goalie. Bua eile ag an bhfoireann Sinsear

Our seniors had another very competitive game on Sunday last and, for the second week in a row, came away with a narrow victory. Annaduff are always difficult opponents and over recent years they usually have the upper hand on us. However, on Sunday last we led all the way apart from about five minutes towards the end. For the second week in a row, Adrian Smith was the hero for Ballinamore. Against Drumkeerin he scored the last point which gave us a one point win and on Sunday he fisted the winning goal with only a couple of minutes remaining. We had the better of the first half and led by 0-8 to 0-4, although we were playing with the wind. Shane McWeeney was the dominant figure in the first half and scored some great points, five in all, three from frees. One great one was pointed from the side-line and another from long range. Points from Adrian Smith and a free from James McWeeney ensured Annaduff could do no better than level although they did dominate the second half and got some great points with the wind. However, with very little remaining they got one point ahead for the first time and with everyone looking at their watches, a ball arrived at the edge of the square and Adrian did great work to direct it to the net. It ended 1-10 to 0-11. Leanaigí leis an obair.

Foireann: David Dolan, Philip Murphy, Matthew Murphy, John Fanning, David Duignan (0-1), Liam Ferguson, Paul McLoughlin, Shane Moran (0-1), Conor McTague, Ryan Gavin, Shane Murphy, Shane McWeeney (0-6), Adrian Smith (1-1), James McWeeney (0-2), Wayne McKeon. Good win for Seniors

Our seniors got their first points in Gallogly Catering Division I with a hard fought one-point victory over Dromahair in the Park on Sunday. This was a great game throughout with good competitive football from both sides. Dromahair had the better of the first half and should have been ahead by more than the 0-6 to 0-3 half-time score. Our points came from Wayne McKeon, Adrian Smith and a free from Shane McWeeney. We got a great boost when Shane McWeeney stole behind the defence, got the ball and made no mistake in finishing to the net within a minute. That brought it level but Dromahair went a point up before points from a Shane McWeeney free and one from Shane Moran put us ahead. Dromahair levelled again. There were a lot of wides from both sides in the second half before Adrian Smith got a very good point to put us 1-6 to 0-8 ahead and so it finished. It certainly was a relief to get both points and it was hard earned as Dromahair fought to the finish.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, John Fanning, Matthew Murphy, Philip Murphy, Paul McLoughlin Liam Ferguson, David Duignan, Conor McTague, Adrian Smith (0-2), Shane McWeeney (1-2), Wayne McKeon (0-1), Ryan Gavin, Shane Murphy, Shane Moran (0-1), James McWeeney. Subs: Sean Murray for R Gavin, Rory O’Rourke for P Farrelly, John McWeeney for S Murphy.

Juniors beat Carrigallen

Our Division 3 team made a good start to their league with a 1-8 to 0-6 win over Carrigallen. This was a very close game until the final few minutes when Andrew Burns, who made a big impact when he came on, fielded outside the square and finished to the net. He did what failed others on several occasions as we had at least four goal chances that were misses in one way or another. It was 0-3 apiece at half time with points from Ryan Gavin, Rory O’Rourke and Stephen McTague. We went two up early in the second half with points from Paul Prior and Mark McGrory but Carrigallen got three in a row to lead by 0-6 to 0-5. We played our best from them on and got points from Paul Prior, Andrew Burns, Adrian Gallogly and then the goal from Andrew Burns sealed it.

Foireann: Denis Dolan, Kevin O’Connor, Diarmuid Keegan, Kevin Banks, Shane Creamer, Jason Kellett, David McLoughlin, Stephen McTague (0-1), Brian Cafferty, Ryan Gavin (0-1), Paul Prior (0-2), Beirne, Mark McGrory (0-1), Rory O’Rourke (0-1), Adrian Gallogly (0-1). Subs: Andrew Burns (1-1) for Ryan Gavin, Jack Cullen for Shane Creamer.

Cycle to Castlebar

In four months’ time our most ambitious cycling event will take place to Castlebar. This is the fourth year in a row Bríd Sullivan has organised a cycling fundraiser for the club, and this will be the longest journey, about 72 miles from Ballinamore to Castlebar. A good number of people have taken part in all three events so far, and most, we expect, will be delighted to tackle the trip to Castlebar. The cycle has been a major fundraiser for the club and that is the primary purpose of the exercise. Everyone who cycles is asked and expected to raise sponsorship. This year Bríd is hoping that all of those who cycled in previous years will attempt this trip but she would also like to hear from new people who haven’t cycled so far. Obviously you would need some practice but there is lots of time to start. Give Bríd a ring at 087 9173185

Minor play Mohill in Minor League in Páirc Sheáin Uí Eislin on Saturday at 12.00. Junior Division 3 game v Carrigallen in the Park at 4.00 on Saturday. Seniors play Dromahair on Sunday in Dromahair at 2.00pm

Seniors lose to Mohill

Our seniors had their first Division I League outing on Sunday. They were never far behind but apart from the first few minutes when we got the first score, Mohill led us all the way. Shane Murphy was fouled in the square and the penalty from Shane McWeeney was finished to the net. This raised hopes but it ended in victory for Mohill by 0-10 to 1-5.

Foireann: Philip Farrelly, Matthew Murphy, David Duignan, John Fanning, Philip Murphy, Liam Ferguson, Paul McLoughlin, Conor McTague, Adrian Smith, Shane Murphy, Shane Moran, Brian Beirne, Shane McWeeney, James McWeeney, Tommy McCormack. Subs: Wayne McKeon for S Murphy, David McLoughlin for B Beirne, Kevin O’Connor for T McCormack

Successful Dinner Dance

Our dinner dance was a great success on Friday night last and a great crowd attended. Medals were presented to our Minor footballers who, on their own, took the Minor Championship to the town for the first time since 1985. Our seniors got their Division 2 League medals.

1986 team

Twenty five years ago Ballinamore’s seniors won the Senior Championship, beating their great rivals of the time, Aughawillan, by 0-9 to 1-5 in the final in Cloone. On Friday last most of them were back in the Landmark Hotel to celebrate that great win. Frank Heavey was captain that day and he came back from New York especially for the Dinner Dance. Ironically, Brendan Burns, the man who managed the O’Heslin’s team to that victory in 1986 was also the man in charge of our seniors who won the Division 2 League last year. The team on that famous day in 1986 was: Damien Crossan, Tomás Conlon, Sean Creamer, Colm Reilly, Seamus McTague, Ollie Honeyman, Francis Maguire, Paul Kieran, Patrick McKiernan, Ciaran Mahon, Frank Heavey (capt), Hugh Murphy, Liam Conlon, Sean Crossan, Gerry Logan. Subs: B. Breen for G. Logan, Ray Dolan for P. Kieran. Other panel members: Conor Harte, Brian Mahon, Gerry Hennigan, Johnny Martin, Alan Banks, Pascal Flynn, Garry Smyth, Paddy Prior, Tom McCaffrey and Niall Gallagher.

Interprovincial football

It is a while since we had a Ballinamore man on a Connacht team in what used to be known as the Railway Cup, now the Inter-provincial tournament. On Sunday last Wayne McKeon played at left half forward on the Connacht team and, as he has often done for Ballinamore and Leitrim from the same position, he got on the score sheet with a point. Unfortunately Connacht were beaten by Ulster. Who was the last man from Ballinamore on a Connacht team or panel. Was it Paul Kieran or Joe Honeyman?

Players on County team

For the past decade our representation on the County senior team was virtually nil. This was indeed a sign of the times, as for years previous it was unknown for a Leitrim team to take the field without a few Ballinamore players. Good now to see three players on the panel with Wayne McKeon filling the centre half back position and Shane Moran also made his senior debut on Sunday. Shane also played for the NUIG team that beat St Mary’s Belfast last week in the Sigerson Cup. Philip Farrelly is also on the Senior panel. Times are changing?

Executive Meeting

Executive meeting in the Park this Friday at 8.30. Full attendance requested.

Táin Hurling League

Great to see our hurlers fielding in the Táin League. For years we have been crying out for more games for our senior hurlers and, at long last, this has come to fruition. Their first game was against Clonguish and, while they were well beaten, they put in a great effort against a stronger team. Panel was: Capt. Liam Ferguson, Dan O’Brien, Gavin Brennan, Joe Earley, Paul Earley, Paddy McManus, Michael O’Dell, Paul Mcloughlin, Adrian Smyth, David Duignan, Kevin O’Connor, Cormac Sullivan, Conor Harte, Keith Boyle, Kevin Banks and Brendan Mulvey. There will be four more games and hopefully we will be able to field our best available team for this league. We expect to have many more players available to play St Fechin’s in Breffni Park next Saturday 11th of February at 2pm

Our young Novelty Act team of Tom Prior, Euan McManus, Senan Harte, Aaron McBrien, Danny Smith, Eoin Toolan, Lorcan Curran and Owen Curran won the Nuachleas at the Co Scór na nÓg Finals in Manorhamilton on Sunday last. They are certainly the youngest group we ever had in Scór Novelty Act and to win was a great boost to them at such a young age. The youngest, Lorcan Curran at eight years of age must be one of the youngest ever to win a County title in Leitrim. Well done to all of them and best of luck in Connacht in three weeks time. We were also represented in Rince Foirne, Rince Seit and in recitation by Megan McHugh. The Connacht Finals are in the Travellers Friend in Castlebar on Sunday 29 Eanáir.

The number of games our players played in 2011

Below we give an analysis of the number of games played by each adult player in league, shield and championship during 2011.The year’s match reports were analysed by Ruairí Sullivan and put on a chart. It is a very interesting chart that illustrates the sizeable number of adult players we have and the importance of the clubs role in providing the maximum amount of games for the maximum amount of players.

The GAA at national level recommends that each adult player should get at least 20 games per year. Only three players played more than 20 games in the year. Tommy McCormack topped the list with 24 starts, Joe Murphy had 22 and Sean McCartin had 20. It is also very revealing in that these three players would not have got anywhere near the recommended 20 games only for the number of outings they had with the Division 5 team.

In 2011 a total of 68 different players played at least one game during the year. Last time we did this analysis was for the year 2009 (figures can be seen further down on this page under the notes for 8 Feabhra 2010) and in that year just 57 players played at least one game. This shows that there are more players than ever available, although there remains the difficulty of getting them out on certain days.

It is interesting also that we picked up 15 players between 2009 and 2011 and lost just 4 who played in 2009. The four who played in 2009 but not in 2011 were: Stephen Beirne, Michael Dolan, Ciaran Maxwell and Joe McTague.
