Senior Championship Final 21 years in the Making!!

The excitement had been building all week in the run up to our semifinal clash with Mohill with good look wishes and images of BSOH flags flying high coming in from all Corners of the globe, we had messages from supporters in Australia, Canada, California, and the Middle East and all over Europe and Ireland.

It was fantastic to see such great support and well wishes from all our fans and to see the large numbers that were in attendance at the game with many players who took to the field in our last final 21 years ago there on the day to cheer on the new stars,. Support for these great lads is what we wanted and certainly what we got and we are sure it helped the lads in this stern test against Mohill.

Speaking to our own fans before the game there was certainly excitement and a bit of nervousness thrown in for good measure, it’s alright people saying your favorites but as many critics have told us you haven’t been tested, not something we would agree with and Mohill certainly brought a test on Sunday, a team with a wealth of experience at this level who have contested and won many a semifinal knocking out the Willies this season on the way to our game..

If you were to call Sunday a test its one the lads certainly passed with flying colors, they played with determination, believe, skill and heart showing that they were worthy of a place in a county final and certainly proving that they are ready to give it their all.

We are not going to call out any individual performances this was a fantastic team effort from everyone on the pitch and off; football is a squad game now a days and even those not involved on the day play their part on the training pitch helping the team prepare.

Some things have changed since we were last in a senior county final 21 years ago.
21 years ago there was no social media or internet, On Sunday we went live on social media for the last 10 minutes of the game and had over 150 Ballinamore fans from around the globe join us to watch the lads secure their deserved place in the County Final. Social media doesn’t make up for being at the game but it certainly helps when you’re on the other side of the world.

After Sundays result we could already see the messages of support coming in from around the world as Ballinamore fans near and far began to plan their trips home to support the lads in person, they’ll certainly be a few extra in attendance in a couple of weeks’ time !

Well done lads enjoy the buildup and good look in the final you deserve to be there. For all our fans home and away get the flags out and show your support.

Sponsorship

Special thanks to Bryan Cribbin and Emer Mc Devitt of Mc Devitts Pharmacy Ballinamore for their very generous sponsorship of zip tops for the team. All the lads would like to thank Bryan and Emer and wish them well with the launch of their new loyalty scheme which is available in store now.

Special thanks also to Chef ! Niall and Karen Of Gallogly OutdoorCatering for their generous sponsorship of Murphy’s socks for the senior team

MacDiarmada Gaels

Our Black and Amber u15 teams were in action in the second round of their Championship matches at the weekend with the Black team at home to St Marys in a tough match in which we were comfortably beaten, all credit must go to the lads their heads did not drop and they kept fighting to the end and hopefully all the hard work they have put in on the training ground will pay off in their next game

Our Amber team followed on their first round win against Mohill with another impressive win this time against St Marys in Ballinamore on Saturday, the lads put in a good display and were deserving winners by a score of 5:06 to 3:09

Nursery, u9 and U11s

Our season came to an end on Monday evening with a fantastic party in the club rooms for all of our nursery , u9 and u11 kids, it was certainly noisy with a sea of yellow every ware to be seen. The children have been fantastic all season and it was fitting to give them a good send off, special thanks to the senior players that attended, it certainly gave the kids and I am sure the players a great buzz after Sundays result to hear the chants of Ballinamore reverberating around the stand. Special thanks as ever to all the Mentors and Coaches who give up their time to train the kids and to everyone that helped out over the season and on Monday night

Club Gear

We will be taking orders on Wednesday night for the new black zip tops from 20:00 till 22:00 in the club rooms, please note we have been advised they will not be here in time for the final ! so if you want one and your okay for it not be here on time please come down. Gear is available direct from O’Neils – if you Google Ballinamore and O’Neils you will reach the store.

Flags

Only a couple of weeks to get the flags and bunting out to show your support for the team in this year’s county final. If you do not have a flag check out Murphy’s newsagent they have a wide range of flags, scarfs and headband.

Our u13 Black team was in action on Friday evening in this year’s championship semi-final against St Mary’s. It was a great display by the lads who were leading at half time and playing well unfortunately Carrick came back stronger in the second half to win the game and reach the final.

It was a similar story on Monday evening with our Amber team also playing St Mary’s in their Championship semi-final, the lads again put in a great display but were unable to overcome a good Carrick Team.

Overall over the course of the Championship the lads have done very well and worked hard in Games and on the training pitch and many of them will be back playing u13 next year and hopefully the experiences of this year will help them in the years to come. Special thanks also to all of the Mentors who have done fantastic work with the lads over the course of the season.

Well done to the lads on another impressive win at the weekend, versus Allen Gaels, the lads controlled the game from the start and were deserving winners by a score of 5.23 to 1:11.

Club notes Béal an Átha Móir Seán Ó hEislin

A great loss

On Saturday morning we all began to hear the sad news of Tommy “Spike” McCormack Junior’s passing and all our hearts began to break as we tried to process this devastating news.

Spike and his family have always been deeply connected to Ballinamore Seán O’Heslins with Spike playing both Hurling and football for the club.

As a hurler Spike usually lined out in goals and with his bravery and his massive puck out he excelled in the position. Indeed the sliotar was not the only ball he was known to strike as Tommy was also a noted golfer. But when it came to Gaelic games, Spike’s first love was football. Speed of thought and the quickness of his feet were his attributes. Indeed Spike prided himself on the fact that nobody was really sure if he was right footed or left footed; he was that good with either!

Spike represented the Club at all grades including senior, with one of his finest moments being when as joint captain he led us to a Junior B Championship in 2015. Spike was a determined man on the football pitch as well as off and this drive helped him to be a success in all he has done, as a club we were proud of him as a player and equally as proud when he did so well in the European and World powerlifting championships.

He never forgot his roots and was proud to wear his yellow Seán O’Heslins socks whenever he competed at the powerlifting. Spike was a Ballinamore man to the core loving the town and the club and and we were all proud of him when he was asked to open the festival in recognition of all he had achieved.

As Karen his lovely wife has said yellow was Spikes favorite colour and he was surely always proud to wear that Yellow Ballinamore Jersey. As a club it is hard to put into words how saddened we are and the sorrow we feel for his family and friends and we would all like to pass on our deepest sympathies and love to his wife Karen, his parents Tommy and Teresa, his sisters Majella, Elaine, Leona and Emma and all of Spikes family and friends at this difficult time.

Spike was a true Ceannabó man and he will certainly be missed by us all.

Senior Championship

The senior lads started their championship campaign on Saturday evening in Drumshanbo against Dromahaire ,after hearing the sad news on Spikes passing they lined out across the pitch as one and observed a minutes silence for their fallen friend.

The lads started the game with what looked like a point to proof and came out flying with Barry McGovern opening the scoring after less than 1 minute and after that it was one way traffic with the stand out point of the game coming from young Tom Prior a jinking 60 yard run from the 50 evading three Dromahair men and then a long range point .

Ballinamore led by 16 points at the Break only conceding 1 free to Dromahaire, The second half was similar with the Lads playing well and pushing forward at every opportunity and adding scores. The final score was 4:26 to 1:02 to the lads and an impressive win one we are sure Spike would have been proud of, next up is the neighbours Aughawillan on Saturday at 1900 in Pairc Sean MacDiarmada.

Intermediate Championship

As with the senior lads our intermediate lads showed their respect to Spike with a minutes silence before their opening match against Leitrim Gaels. The lads put in a good performance but a number of wides and a missed penalty against a very good wife left us with to much to do. The lads put in a great effort and started the second half well with 3 scores to no reply but it was not enough and we lost by a score of 3:12 to 0:07 next up for the lads is a match against Cloone on Sunday at 12:00 in Carrigallen.

Club Crest and Cairde Ceannabo

For the first time in many years the club is updating its crest. The old crest has been worn with pride for many years but it was felt that the time is right to revamp our logo.

The new layout incorporates the original S.O.H. into a sleek, modern design which works well on all backgrounds.

The new crest incorporates the S.O.H layout of the original crest along with the Club name and the Club motto (CEANN NA BÓ GO DEO). You will also notice in the centre of the crest the 3 arches which represent the main bridge in the town at the canal basin… One of Ballinamore’s most iconic landmarks. Did you know that the name Ballinamore derives from the Irish Béal an Átha Móir which literally means “The Mouth of the Big Ford”. The Ford was a crossing point on the river where the town was first established. Now this landmark crossing point is emblazoned on our new crest!

The crest is being launched in conjunction with our new supporters club, CAIRDE CEANNABO! Membership is now open for 2019 Cairde Ceannabo at a cost of €50. Members will receive a stylish new 2019 car sticker along with entry to a draw for 2 All-Ireland tickets complete with overnight accommodation for 2 in Buswells Hotel, Dublin. Membership is limited, so ask any member of the executive for details. CEANN NA BÓ GO DEO!

Historical display

Seán Ó Súilleabháin and his team have recently completed an historical display of images in our club rooms which chart all of our successes over the years. There are some fantastic images and we would recommend all our followers to take a look over the coming weeks, special thanks to Sean and his team for all the hard work they have put into this fantastic display.

Minor ladies

Well done to our Minor ladies who defeated Allen Gaels on a scoreline of 7-14 to 2-6 in the opening round of the Championship last night. A great performance from all of the team.

Next up, we play St Brigid’s on Wednesday, 31st July at 7pm in Ballinamore. Please come out to support the girls!

Sympathy

Deepest sympathies are extended to the family and friends of the late Mick Prior who passed away after illness on Sunday. Mick’s Nephews, nieces, grand nephews and grand nieces are all involved with the club and we wish them and all his family and friends deepest sympathy at this difficult time

A speedy Recovery

Best of luck to club and county star Aoibhinn Keegan who is recovering from her cruciate knee surgery, everyone at the club wishes her a speedy recovery.

Well done to the MacDiarmada Gaels boys and girls who won the Cross County cup on Saturday in Pairc Sean. The team defeated a very good Rinn Gaels team on the day playing some great football, they never gave up in a match that was played in warm conditions and required extra time to find a winner giving it their all. Well done to the lads on a fantastic victory on Saturday evening against Glencar Manor in the pairc, the lads put in a good display and were deserving winners with the final score 2:13 to 0:12, the result leaves the lads in second place in the league one point behind Mohill on 11 points. John West Feile

The Connacht Feile started on Friday in the Pairc with our MacDiarmada Gaels boys meeting the team we were hosting JK Brackens from Tipperary and our girls team meeting Erin’s Own Castlecomer from Kilkenny.

The lads were first in action at home playing Aughrim and Mohill on Friday, winning against Aughrim but loosing to Mohill, this left us with a chance to progress to the quarterfinals on Saturday morning with a victory against JK Brackens, the lads won and we headed to Sligo for a quarterfinal match in the cup competition which we were unfortunate to loose against Patrick Rankins Armagh with the final score 3:01 to 0:08

Our girls team played their opening matches in Mohill on Friday beating Mohill and loosing to eventual all Ireland winners Two mile house, before they returned to meet up with Erin’s Own who they defeated on Saturday to earn a place in the quarterfinals where they played and unfortunately lost to St Dominic’s.

The Feile experience despite the losses was fantastic for both our teams and their players and it was an experience we are sure they will not forget.

It was a fantastic experience also for everyone in the Ballinamore and Kiltubrid clubs who helped make it such a special occasion for our own and all the visiting teams to Ballinamore, the welcome all the teams were given was second to none and certainly no one went away hungry with over 750 cups of tea and coffees served with a mountain of baked goods, Sandwiches, pizza, chips and with over 400 burgers and 200 sausages prepared and served at Saturday nights BBQ it was a sight to behold

It was great to host our new friends J.K.Brackens GAA and Erins Own Gaa, our girls and our MacDiarmada Gaels lads May have not reached the finals but they certainly made lasting memories and friends. The visiting teams should be proud also, again they didn’t make the final but two finer groups of players you would not meet anywhere they were a credit to their clubs, mentors and Families and conducted themselves so well over the weekend..

Special thanks to all our sponsors who helped us make the weekend such a success Micheal Scollan Meats, Donohoes Supervalu Ballinamore, Tesco Ballinamore, David Mcbrien’s Family butchers, Fresh Today Extra, Priors @ High St and Gallogly catering . Special thanks also to all the people that helped over the weekend cooking, cleaning, serving, the mentors and trainers who have helped the players prepare over the last months and of course all the host families we couldn’t have done it without ye !!!
