Paddy RIP

Tuesday the 6th of August will be remembered by the people of Ballinamore as the day we heard of the passing of an icon, legend and possibly one of Leitrim greatest., ever players, a sporting genius akin to the Best, Ronaldo’s, Messi’s . Rock, Connolly and Coopers of their day.

As the news started to seep through the town and hinterland of Ballinamore, even though tinged with sadness it was an opportunity which was grasped by those that knew or saw Paddy to regale those that didn’t of his exploits, we heard of the scores, the individual and team accolades bestowed on him over the years, the skill he had, the matches he won, the legend grew and was passed on to a new generation.

Children asked parents and grand parents who paddy was and why he was the greatest, in a time when YouTube can be searched for every snippet it was a joy in a way to step back from technology and think for a moment about what those favourite moments were and to be able pass them onto those unfortunate not have seen the great man in action, a legend was reborn for those that had never seen him play.

It was evident on the night of Paddy’s removal that his was the case, young and old gathered from the pitch to the church to guard Paddy as he was making his final journey. There were club colours in attendance all along the route and not just O’Heslins. Our current players all too young to have seen the great man play stood sombre and proud as they walked from the pitch in a touching tribute to the great man, guarding the great forward as he made his last run. The cortege stopped at high street at Paddy’s bar and a touching tribute as his number 11 jersey hung proud in his former residence. The cortege moved on with current players, family and friends carrying Paddy as he made his way to the church where large crowds gathered to pay their respects to one of Ballinamore’s Greatest.

One’s passing is never the end, and nor will it be for Paddy as I am sure he will now be lacing up his boots for a game with some of those great men that have gone before and cracker I am sure it will be.

To Paddy’s family, friend and all that knew him, our deepest sympathies, Paddy may have passed but maybe a legend has been born.

Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Championship

It was a hard-fought draw for the senior lads on Saturday in Cloone when they took on our neighbours Drumreilly in the second round of this year’s championship. As was expected Drumreilly were a stern test and led by 1 point at half time with the score 0:07 to 1:05. The second half started well for Drumreilly with the adding a couple of quick points to give them a three-point lead, the lads rallied and after 10 minutes the sides were level. Both team continued to trade points before Drumreilly scored an important goal to lead by three with 14 mins of the second half gone. It was nip and tuck for the rest of the game with the lads levelling and then taking the lead only for Drumreilly to level near the end, with the final score 1:12 to 2:09. The result leaves the lads on second in the group on 3 points level with Drumreilly and one point behind Mohill, the next match is on Saturday in Pairc Sean against Dromahair at 1730

Smiths Monuments Intermediate Championship

The second round of the intermediate championship took place on Sunday and this time the lads were up against Kiltubrid who proved to be very strong team winning the match with a score of 3-22 to 0-10. Next up for the lads is a match against Carrigallen in Cloone on Sunday at 12:00, your support for these great lads would be appreciated.

Ballinamore Hurling

Well done to our young hurlers who were in action in the Tain u13 final against a very good Warronpoint team. It was a tough match for the lads who eventually lost to this very experienced team, the lads never gave up and fought to the bitter end and showed how far they have progressed over the last year and it was fitting that Kian McGovern received the man of the match award at the end.

The tournament was a massive success which gave the lads some very competitive games and they picked up some excellent skills in these last few months.

A huge thanks to their great management team of Niall Connelly and Paddy O’Connor for their dedication to these young hurlers.

Well to done to all the organisers of the Tain Og league for putting Hurling on the map in the weaker counties and encouraging all players of all abilities to play our national game.

Under 12 Girls Championship Final

Well done to our u12 girls who were in action on Sunday in the Championship final against St Bridget’s in Pairc Sean. The girls put in an excellent performance and were just beaten on the day by a very strong team. The final score was 1:07 to 0:14 with St Bridget’s goalie denying a couple of goal scoring chances at the end. All credit to the girls for their performance and hopefully they will not be to disheartened as I am sure there will be plenty more finals for them in the future. Special thanks also to the management team of Adrian Murphy, Mollie Murphy and Katie Duignan for all their hard work and support for the girls

Team: Lily Reynolds, Aoife Donohoe, Aoibhinn Keegan, Ellen McTeague, Ella Van Der Laan, Emma McKiernan, Lucy Murphy, Aishling Maguire, Romy Mcallister, Dearphla O’Connell, Katie Beirne, Nicole Kellett, Thiana Regan, Sinead Martin and Niamh Christy

Comhbhron

Everyone at the club would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the late Oliver Plunkett who sadly passed away on Saturday, Oliver was a wonderful supporter of the GAA and was the current serving Uachtarán of Aughawillan GAA, a club he has supported and served all his life with great distinction. Oliver was a great football man, friend and family man who will be missed by all that knew him.  Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Deepest condolences are also extended to the family and friends of the late Fr. Michéal Quinn, Parish Priest, Crosserlough, Co. Cavan and late of Drumlonan, Ballinamore who sadly passed away on Saturday.

We would also like to pass on our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the late Elizabeth McGinley who passed away recently in Sligo.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family and friends of the bereaved at this difficult time.

Under 17 Championship

Well done to our u17 lads who had a great championship win on Monday evening against Drumkerran, the win by s score of 0:18 to 1:10 leaves us top on six points. Next up is an away game against St Mary’s at 19:00 on Monday evening

Ballinamore Hurling

Special thanks to Martin Fogarty Hurling legend who gave our young hurlers a master class on hurling last Saturday. He regaled them about the Seven most important aspects of the game and introduced them to all the skills needed to become an all-Ireland winning hurler. Martin showed them the national league, Leinster and all Ireland medals that Kilkenny won.  The Kilkenny jerseys were passed around and Martin explained the pride that lads had in wearing then and how they worked hard to earn that honour. Martin explained that practice, practice and more practice were what was needed to be successful and that you should always appreciate your coaches. We would all like to thank Martin for his wonderful visit and the excellent encouragement and knowledges he passed on to all the players. Hopefully Martins wise words will assist our young hurlers on to victory on August the 4th when they take part in the Tain Og Finals day.

U13 Championship

Our U13 were in action against our local rivals St Bridgets in the park last Thursday. The lads got off to a great start opening the scoring with a goal followed by great points by Cathal, Gavin and Naoise, St Bridgets fought back strong scoring a 2.2 before the break, bringing them right back into the game. They continued the pressure on the lads but numerous brilliant saves from our keeper Kaylon Murray ensured we held the lead of 1-6 to 2-2 at the break. Like the first half we started strong as Paul score numerous long rang efforts which pushed our lead to 5 points. We traded scores for much of the remaining half but a late surge by St Bridgets ensured a tense end, but our lads battled hard and held out worthy 2 point winners ending on a score line of 3.9 – 4.4.
Team: Kaylon Murray, Cian McGovern, Dessie Wisely, Paul Honeyman, Michael McBrien, Mark Ahern, Cathal McCarthy, Gavin Darcy, Naoise McManus (c), James King, Tommy Smith, Darragh Gavin, Louis Quinn, Neil Sweeney, Harry Prior, Rian McManus, Colum Gartland, Michael Keegan,

Cil Mor Gaels

Our u12’s amalgamated with Kiltubrid GAA took part in the u12 cross county league.

We faired very well in this competition, with the lads making it all the way to the semi-final.

The semi final took place against Clonguish Gaels and was an absolute belter of a game.

The lads got off to a great start hitting the opening score with a goal, once Clonguish settled into the game they began to show their dominance scoring 1-5 without reply.

The lads dug deep and snatched another goal and a point to close the gap to just 2 points at the break. In the second half Clonguish came out strong and once again controlled the game for large periods of the half scoring another 1-6. However the lads were not going to be beaten that easily and in a late surge we gabbed another 2-2, unfortunately we ran out of time and Clonguish advanced to the final.

The game ended 2-11 to 4-3, but the lads have to be commended for the way they showed such courage and determination never giving up and fighting to the final whistle. A semi-final was a great achievement but if the lads were to be rewarded for their efforts all year a final would have been far more just. Special thanks to the mentors from both Ballinamore and Kiltubrid for working so hard with the players over the course of the competition.

U13 Championship

The u13 championship starts this Thursday when our young players take on Gail Na Meilge at 19.00 away from home, again these young players would love your support
